To all the docs out there:

What is your prime motivation? Have you ever really dreamed of being a doctor since nung bata pa kayo? Well, I can relate to you the story of my sister, it happened in 1994 (10 yrs old pa lang siya nun):

I was running around in out subdivision. I was only seven, fragile, and weak. In a moment, I tripped off and got one of my knees wounded. At first, I really don't care, there was no drop of blood coming out yet. However, my sister (who I fondly call "Ate") came in to the rescue. She actually grabbed her "kiddie medical kit" in which the items inside were stolen from my Mom's closet. My sister took all the necessary items, from the bandage to the cotton to the alcohol. She had all of them. She told me to be careful each time I play around and softly applied the alcohol and then covered my wound with the cotton and the bandage. I asked her, "yanga mo yan tigagibo?" She answered, "baga ka man tanga. siyempre, para mawara ang lugad mo. aram mo naman sana ako, gusto ko maging doktor." I forgot the exact words and yes, I added flavor to my story but the point is, 13 years later, my sister is now entering the medical field as a 1st year medicine student. I looked back and recalled when was the last time she told me that she wants to be a doctor. My memory brought me back to 1994. It was a time when we were just kids. :)

Yup! since I was a little kid... I already dreamed of becoming a surgeon! I guess I am a little bit fortunate coz I'm presently working on it... I'm in leagzpi right now, just arrived from Metro Gaisano Mall... Our family owns an internet cafe (Whizz) just in front of Perez Residence situated on the street going to BUCIT... I'm leaving tomorrow bound to Manila via Cebu Pacific flight 7:30AM, Legazpi City already improved a lot but more infrastructures need to be done

I landed in Legazpi Airport last May 26th but my Mom told me to proceed to our family residence (Perez) in Bulusan, Sorsogon...coz most of my family members were already there, Presently, I'm here in Legazpi City... I just arrived from Gaisano Mall... Nice commercial place! Hope it will be expanded in the future or rather more projects like that. I'm staying right now in our house here in Legazpi City and presently staying here inside our internet cafe... I'm going to post some of my photos when I go back there in Manila tomorrow probably...

^Just call me Dex. These shots aren't mine, though. I just found them on the net and shared them here because they're really worth posting. But I have some Mayon shots of my own over at my flickr page --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/dxpsycho/
Check them out sometime. :)

Took a look and I love all the shots. The Mayon is just amazing when it comes to exciting and evocative photography. It commands respect in virtually all photos, far more so in real life.
I really regret not having more than one afternoon in your city. The next run I plan to have a number of days there. At least I cna learn a lot more about it through this thread.
Some time I shall have to work out how to put photos on here myself :-)

Thanks

About Mayon, I've lived under its shadow all my life but its beauty and symmetry never fails to amaze me all the time. :)

hi there. im new in this forum site although i have been reading stuff mostly about bicol and legazpi for some time now. Im from legazpi. Its nice looking at pics u guys posted. I miss home and visiting in this forum makes me feel im home again. Im in Melbourne by the way. Hope im welcome here.

Hi Jady,
I'm from Sydney (the little city just north of you :) ) and despite not being from the Philippines they have made me feel welcome on all Philippine threads here.
I had never been to the Philippines until after I got married. My wife, who I actually met here, was originally rom Masbate. It was after visiting her province that I ended up in LA.
As mentioned earlier my stay in Legazpi was brief, but long enough to place it up in my top five places I want to be while in the Phils.
Always great to meet more Philos Down Under.

Anyway, I am back to school kaya superwork na though yesterday, we went to a Tabaco resort via Sagnay - Tiwi road (I'll post some pics at the Bicol Region forum). I took some shots and these are the ones I want to post here.

Hiya gurugeri,
Sorry but try as I do I have only learnt a very small amount of Tagalog. Not sure if Ganda is similar to maganda (beautiful) and from what I understand ng is similar to 'of'.
So if I am reading this properly I think I should be thanking you for your kind words. But then my understanding is very limited. We need a 'Learn Tagalog' forum

Yeah a few people have commented about how lucky I was to get it so clear in such a short stay. Perhaps nature just knew who desperately long I have wanted to see it.

Few other shots:

1) The Mayon seen from the Legaspi railway station (well just beyond it near a sari sari store with the coldest Coke I have ever drunk). Met a lovely old guy here who told me some wonderful stories about the Mayon.
Sadly I was just so busy looking at it and never had enough time to go and see him again.

2) One of my millions of relatives but the only one living in Legazpi. Came to see us at the Magayon Hotel before we went to dinner which, as always thanks to my son, had to be Jollibee :-)

3) The third one is cheating as it isn't actually Legazpi. It was taken on Jintotolo Island while enroute to Legazpi and pretty much sums up my view of Philippine beaches in the late afternoon. I have always wanted this type of shot.

Yes, "ganda" is actually the noun (beauty), and "maganda" is the adjective (beautiful). But we have cut the adjective maganda to ganda which is still an adjective.

Correct, "ng" is "of".

And too bad, there seems to be no other way this problem could be solved. Lakandula Drive (where I am from), seems quite far from the town proper. And traffic there is getting worse as well. Yung riles kaya? I hope the new mayor does something about it--including a complete Ninoy Aquino park makeover.

About the traffic? I sometimes believe that traffic jam in Daraga is a blessing. Heheh, it may be the reason why businesses bloom in this town. Look how busy it is now. However, it needs a lot of improvement still.

Yes it definitely will take time. But if it comes to a point that these two urban areas need to merge. I honestly think that going the Manila Style Direction is not the way to go. Manila is by no means a model urban area to be copied. Manila is an Urban Decay (not urban development). Those who live outside the Philippines knows what I am talking about. Light has been shown to us and we want our kababayans to experience the same. I honestly believe that Legazpi and Albay is being managed much better than manila. So lets continue to do that. Let us find our own potential as Albayanos and hopefully become the model government and citizens for the rest of the country to follow.

Put it plainly... I don't agree in councils(unless both parties agree to Honor the councils power, which doesn't really happen coz our politician tend to be egotists than true servants). Merge the two with one Government heading it.

I still believe that merging needs a lot of things to be done. We might just leave this decision to the incumbent mayors of Legazpi and Daraga. As of now, merging has little possibilities. Very little, I should say. It takes a lot of drive, pursuance, and hard work. Back then, I thought merging will be a good idea. I just changed my perspective. I went into thinking of a council. This time, I have changed my ideas. It is better to just have increased collaborations b/w these two entities especially on infrastructural matters. I believe that improvements really rely on the attitude of the present officials maneuvering the entities.

Hi Jady,
Yeah we went and had a look at where the mud had come down into the townships, all very sad and distressing. One place had been a cemetery and a road with some housing around it. There was a couple of small signs with names on them (white with red writing). I am unsure if these were the names of families who lived there.
Terrible thing to happen to such wonderful people.

hi Brad! We live along the street behind Legazpi cemetery. Anyway, we are pretty lucky that the house was still standing. At least my family still got a place to live in. None of our appliances would work. For now, my family is like starting from scratch. We are used to a lot of coping up with life's bumps. That makes FIlipinos tougher people. Agree kayo mga ka-forum????

I have often commented to my wife on how tough Filipinos are. You see 80 year old people hopping the backs of motorcycles, carrying sacks of stuff and climbing up into areas I wouldn't have considered when 21 :-)
You would be hard pressed finding Aussie of that age who could keep up.
When you look at the sad things the Philippines has had to endure over the years it isn't hard to see why the people are so tough. Yet they remain so happy and friendly, unlike so many in coutnries that have endure much less.

Was it because of the shots or some other reasons? Ahehehe!

:)
Nah it was the worn out battery and filled memory card.
She thinks it is quite amusing that two of my friends and myself have this strange competition going on to photograph the most Pinays at our karaoki nights and other parties.
We win nothing if we win, but it is all just good fun. The Pinays all think its fun and who can think of a more beautiful subject to photograph :-)
However I have to say that after my recent trip to the Philippines I am winning by far  :cheer:
Its a great community to be a part of here. Life was so boring until I got involved in it all.

Brad, u should have taken more shots of ur asawa! hehehe

I got plenty of the asawa. I always get plenty of the asawa, however these don't count in our competition as we could all win then :-)
Below is a picture of my beautiful asawa (to the right) with the very cute Rosemary (left). I apologise for the writing (twas for another use) and for the date (my asawa demands this function be left on and I didnt have my camera).

Ahaha! So I am happy you're enjoying the company of Filipinos. But that wouldn't have been possible if it were not for your Filipino wife. Hehe! By the way, I have three cousins in Sydney. I think Australia is getting more popular for migration of Pinoys--besides US and Canada.

Believe me I have had people make these comments to me out here in the past and they don't make them to me a second time.
In one of my jobs the brother of the owner made a racist comment to me once and the fight became very heated. The owners told ME to apologise TO HIM.
I said I would never back down on my support for my second country and they were free to sack me if they see fit, but I will NEVER APOLOGISE to his brother for the anti-asia rubbish he said to me.
Well he knew I was serious and given the illegalness of these sorts of comments here I would have made enough out of being sacked to pay for my house in Roxas City :-)
I think nobody has the right to hold any views on people until they have gone there and met them themselves. Its a very ignorant person who expresses views on Filipinos (or anyone) by what they see on the television news.
My son often says he is Australian. I keep telling him he is Filipino Australian and never to forget to be proud of his Filipino heritage.

When I was younger I used to go the Philippine nights at the local club and had a couple of Pinay friends, but yeah I wouldn't have been this involved had I not met my wife here.
We have thousands of Filipinos out here. You need only go into Sydney's western suburbs to find lots of them. I was recently out in the suburb of Mount Druitt visiting friends (Filipino of course) and saw a street called 'Mabuhay Street'. The whole street was mostly Filipino so they had them name it this.
We only have two Filipino families in our street (was three until recently) so my plans to rename our street 'Mayon Street' is being ignored :)
I met five Filipinos in hospital during my recent operation.
Sydney seems most popular with Melbourne and Brissie following behind.
The more the better, means more coming to my karaoki nights :-)

I agree with you. I would say people who have experienced being discriminated against are the ones who know better, I mean some are closed to recognizing the idea that the world isn't just for them. Anyway, they really have to come here so they will know their racist remarks will find their way back to themselves.

Well the stretch of road from San Roque to that highway-lakandula drive junction direly needs lights. Lakandula Drive should also be well-lit. Ang dilim dun pag-uuwi ako from Goa at gabi na ang dating. When there are no vehicles passing, that part of Daraga is in complete darkness. Minsan may naapakan na pala akong aso hindi ko pa napansin. Dun talaga sa Lakandula Drive ang nangangailangan ng lights. Sa Rizal street kasi mejo maliwanag pa rin naman kahit gabing2x na. Alas dose kasi ako umuuwi each night last summer. Busyng-busy sa feasibility study. So far, okay naman.

MOND'S WISH LIST FOR DARAGA:

1. Better trash management
2. More roads to ease traffic
3. More streetlights particularly in Lakandula drive

That was sad... Hay naku. DPWH needs to prove to us now that their structures constructed are now sturdier or else... same thing will still happen. In Rawis, Legazpi city, I have observed that dredging is now taking place in Yawa river. I wonder if it's the same as in Daraga. Howevr, I sometimes feel that it's quite pointless to post some developments we wanted in our community. Not a single concerned official even knows about this site. I wonder how these stuffs we've said would even reach their minds.

Not a single concerned official even knows about this site. I wonder how these stuffs we've said would even reach their minds.

Hi Mond,
You are likely quite right and even if some do know they may just read an pretend they don't.

It worked very well for a forum here in Sydney about corruption and illegal going ons at Sydney airport.

Just an idea

Yeah I would like to second that. Imagine most of us would have to have a framed photo on a wall but you have a true life photo out the kitchen window.
Absolutely awesome.

I am also in love with that earlier black and white shot DX put up with the two people looking at the Mayon. A wonderful piece of thinking in that shot and the B&W really tops it off.
I wonder where the location is that they are standing. I would love to give it a try myself. Must have been early morning or late afternoon judging by the shadows.

Keep up the great local piccies, I love em and they bring back great memories.

Hi Brad, I think that photo was taken atop Ligņon Hill, near the airport. Were you able to go there during your recent visit? If not, you have to try it on your next trip. It's a bit of a hike up the hill though, but the stunning 360° view of the city, Mayon Volcano and the Albay Gulf plus the fresh cool breeze is definitely well worth it. :okay:

According to the local Bicol newscast of PBN TV6, Mayor Noel Rosal has confirmed that the closed-down Mayon International Hotel (MIH) has been bought by a Singapore-based hotel developer for P375M. He added that the group has already presented their plan to Tourism Secretary Ace Durano. Kumusta Mond,
Already trying to. My maganda asawa has been trying to teach her ungoy of a husband Tagalog for years :-)
So far my Tagalog mabahu.
I can speak quite a few words now but can't spell or read it to good.
My learning mostly takes place when I am over there. A lot of the Filipinas I'm friends with discourage their husbands from learning so they don't know what they are talking about. Now I can at least tell when they are talking about me :-)

Salamat

Yesterday, I got so close to Mayor Triunfante. We actually shaked our hands. He visitted my father's office for some kind of conversation. However, I got too shy to disclose gurugeri's wishes to him. I think I might do some other way. I wish I can get close to him and impart some of the needs we have in Daraga. But I do trust him that he'll do good as a mayor. Heheh...

About the local newspapers? That's a good idea. However, I don't think there's a significant amount of local publications that local residents still read. Local newspapers nowadays are either just too mute or a bit dependent on local politicos (I heard some local writers and even local radiomen accepting bribes just to be silent in some issues).

Corruption in DPWH - it seems that news trnsmitted orally is faster than those written or aired. Corruption in DPWH is already known by many and what's worse, there's nothing that seems stopping them. Just look at the andaya highway in camarines sur, the road is just so rotten. There may be some repairs but those folks trying to guard the wet parts are not even paid. Yet the materials being used are only cement. The dredging materials in Yawa river? Only sand... That's my observation though...

Sorry for disclosing the negative issues of our community...

Morning,
Yeah, the Tagalog she is teaching me is also vastly different to that appearing in a Tagalog-English dictionary that I have also. Still all the Philos we hang around with here seem to understand most (not all) of it when I say it.
Perhaps they are just being nice :)

Sorry for disclosing the negative issues of our community...

Hi there,
There is no apology needed. I like to hear both the good and bad issues as this is the only way for anyone to get a full view of what is happening.
I had a wonderful chance to see corruption at work while visiting the islands. While stopping over at Jintatolo Island I found a beautiful place, virtually spotless of any rubbish and with good paths all over the place.
Everyone told me about the honest of the barangay captain there and how that person looks after the place. They seemed very happy with their island.
I then went to another barangay on Masbate where the captain was often reported to be a little bit less community concious (to use a better term) and I found a place that was messy, very few community facilities and a very disenchanted community. My asawa was quite upset at what the place had become.

Is the mayor approachable if you were to wish to talk to him? Perhaps draw up your ideas and thoughts and take these with you.
Your local newspapers appear to be as fair and unbiased as here in Australia. :(
I suppose another possibility is a website where anyone can access and add to. The earlier mentioned corruption at Sydney Airport really got a lot of attention after a website and forum was set up. Things were investigated and the people involved were very worried.
This all happened from just a little free advertising around the airport itself.

I would try the personal approach first though.

Brad

Hi there,
There is no apology needed.

Brad

I'll definitely try to converse w/ the new mayor next time opportunity arises. I think he's approachable... he's nice but he likes to drink alcohol though...

Hmmm... just this morning while I was attending Sunday mass, I saw a lady... dark-skinned yet undescribably beautiful... she looks like our maid but with this beautiful black hair and more pointed nose... I think this is an attraction bro, should I determine her name???

ei guys, i'll be out na pala. i need to go home. wala pa kasi kaming internet sa bahay. anyways, before I log out I just want to ask this question to new forumers who started this past month of may:

How long did you receive your verification letter to join SSC? I have 3 friends who want to join SSC but could not because their verification letters have not arrived. What shall I do with this? Who are the administrators of these forums?

wala mabilis lang agad agaran na verify agad....
anyways..gud luck sa girl that caught your attention hehehe...
