Bogs Adornado- from Legazpi City, Most Valuable Player

William "Bogs" Adornado was my batch mate - DWCHS Class 68. Even during our high school days, he was already a superstar. In one of the games during the National Intercolligiate tournament in Manila, he scored 70 points prompting the big schools in Manila to offer him a slot in its college varsity. Eventually, UST won him over UE, his first choice because he wanted to play side by side with Jaworski who was UE's team captain then. UST and UE ruled the UAAP that time while Ateneo and La Salle were still with NCAA. When he was still playing in Legazpi, his nickname was plain "Bog" but it became Bogs when he started playing in Manila.

I read in the papers yesterday that PNR's Legazpi train trip, aptly called Mayon Limited will have its maiden trip to the Legazpi Terminal station in the first quarter of 2012. I believe the train is now up to Polangui only.

Metrobank Ligao is set to open soon. Saw the signage being made here in Legazpi. So that makes it the 6th branch in Albay. :banana::banana::banana:

Stategically, bako viable ang Washington for banks. At least not yet. Banks would rather put up branches in Central Business Districts where most commercial establishments are located.

Another reason is accessibility, Washington drive is not is not included in most jeepney routes. Ang yaon lang duman na nagaagi sa Washington ang mga jeep na rawis-daraga. Banks should be acceessible to the riding public and Rizal St. is accessible because all of the jeepney routes go through there.

Washington used to be the diversion road of Legazpi until the Bogtong - Tagas road was opened. Sigun sa mga tiyoon ko na nageskwela sa Divine high school kang kaidt, mga late 60s or early 70s. Divine pa sana daa an yaon dyan. Napapalibutan ki rivcefields. Gari daa harayuun na kaito an Divine ta bihira daa magagi an mga kotse dyan.

Look at Washington now, built up na sya with many hotels and restaurants along it. Plus the subdivisions that have sprouted around it. Time will come that more businesses even banks will open there.

BTW, most of the vacant lots there in Washington is owned by Ago. Ano kaya ang balak nya na gibuhon dyan? Sayang man kung dai mapakinabangan.

Ang alam kong lot ni Ago ay yung katabi ng Aquinas Hospital na empty lot. I hope he turns it into a business hub or a lifestyle center. We need more of those in the city. The location is very feasible pati. Near the airport, and in a not very congested place.

Tama ka Kaniguan. Washington Drive in the 60s and 70s was yet considered outskirts of the city. But development in the area started in the early seventies. What propelled it's development was DWCHS and Aquinas Hospital and when the the airport terminal was transferred from Bogtong to its present site. But if you thinking of fast paced development, I think Washington will be outpaced by Alternate Road the way thing are moving there. Cost of land I think at Washington had gone up tremendously because of its accessibility. I hope Lita Ago's properties there will be developed into some kind of business centers like strip malls with 3 or 4 star hotels. Maybe a cyber building for BPOs.

Legazpi City advances to 10 next wave cities list

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb 14- This city has advanced to the 10 next wave cities in the country’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry list of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP).

Considered by the BPAP as a feeder city for providing highly qualified manpower to other outsourcing centers across the country, Legazpi tied with Dagupan and Dumaguete Cities in the 10th place, a statement released here over the weekend by BPAP chief executive officer Oscar Sañez.

The city, the government’s regional center for Bicol, also scored high in the cost of doing business and availability of needed physical information and technology (IT) infrastructures to support the outsourcing industry according to Sañez.

Its accessibility by land, air, and sea transport from Manila, Cebu, and other areas of the country plus the fact that it has reliable telecommunications providers like Smart, Globe, Bayantel, and PLDT were important factors that attracted BPO investors to locate in the city, he added.

With these, this city became the newest entrant to the class to join the top listed Davao City and other early entrants such as Bacolod, Baguio, Malolos, Iloilo, Cavite, Lipa and Cagayan de Oro.

Being a New Wave City, Sañez said provides a great avenue for local empowerment as it increases talent pool and stems salary and rental inflation.
The BPAP, he said is seeing to it that the Philippines maintains its position as one of the world's top outsourcing destination, generating an annual revenue of $25 billion. "More companies are expected to sub-contract service to companies in the Philippines as a way to cut costs," he added.

BPAP said the Philippines is expected to maintain its market share of around 10 percent, despite emerging competitors like Vietnam and other countries in South America that are also joining the race for more clients. The country's BPO industry currently employs around 600,000 people.
City Mayor Geraldine Rosal welcomed this development saying “our efforts to make Legazpi a leading investment hub is now paying off.”

She said the city currently has two IT park-- the Embarcadero de Legazpi and the Legazpi Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Park that are both highly conducive for outsourcing businesses.The two facilities offer about 8,000 call center seats that could provide jobs to some 24,000 agents in three-shifts.

Pioneering the business here is the Incubation Center of Southern Luzon Technological College Foundation Inc. (SLTCFI) which is an extension of Embarcadero’s P1.8-billion IT Park, the very first IT ecozone in the Bicol region inaugurated in July 2009.

SLTCFI's 600 square meter facility seats around 200 employees forming as part of its IT projects. It also serves as the training center in developing a pool of qualified manpower for the industry and various BPO services for web development and design, online copywriting, Search Engine Optimization, Auto CADD with 2D and 3D animation, cataloging and legal transcription among others.

The BPAP recognition, Rosal said inspires the city government to be more aggressive in promoting Legazpi as among the next wave city and “we are aiming to be among the three top cities in this field given the fact that one of the sectors that keep our competitiveness high is no doubt the outsourcing industry”.

“Our hospitality is known worldwide as one of a kind, even going overboard just to please others. Legazpeñas on the other hand have that special charm that by their mere voice could win clients without difficulties,” she said.

This city, being considered Bicol’s center for higher educational produces every year over 4,000 college graduates that are highly competent. Attesting to this is the fact that BPO firms from all over the country have been coming here to recruit call center agents, according to Rosal.

We are seeing the trail towards our destiny and dared to accomplish an ambitious vision of creating a "City Within a City" in our new investment hub. And being service-oriented economy, the city regards the BPO sector a vital ally and partner in accomplishing its dream for its people,” she added.

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Bureau of Customs (BOC)-Zamboanga City District Office received an award along with five other district offices in the country during the agency's 110th anniversary celebration recently.

This, as the BOC-Zamboanga City District Office and the five other district offices have surpassed its revenue collection target in 2011.

Zamboanga City District Customs Collector Abubakar Hamad said his office surpassed by P13.6 million in 2011 in its revenue collection compared to its target collection goal.

Hamad's office has realized a total revenue collection of P55.1 million which is higher by P13.6 million compared to its 2011 target collection goal of P41.5 million.

Hamad said the revenue collection of last year is also higher by P33.5 million compared to the revenue collection of P21.6 million in 2010.

Customs Commissioner Ruffino Rozzano Biazon has awarded Hamad a plaque during the agency's 110th anniversary last February 6 for the latter's achievement.

The other five customs district offices that received the same award were Legaspi City, Cebu City, Davao City, Clark in Pampanga, and Limay, Bataan.

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 14 — In response to the emergency appeal by officials of Negros Oriental, Albay has again dispatched its nationally acclaimed Team Albay on another mercy mission. The team is now in earthquake battered Guihulngan City.
Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said Team Albay’s mission is to help provide potable water, evacuation management, emergency pre-hospital and preemptive public health care, and psychosocial assistance to displaced residents, as well as assist in the search and retrieval of still missing victims in landslide hit areas.

1st Cagsawa Trail Run set Feb 26

LEGAZPI CITY– Daraga town gears up for the 1st Cagsawa Trail Run on the 26th of February as one of the major events in line with the month-long celebration of 1st Cagsawa Festival.

Myn Sta Ana, Cagsawa Trail Run organizer, said in an interview in the PIA V “Ugnayan sa Bikol” radio program, said the eco-trail running event will not only spark up the challenge of competition among local and national runners but also will promote the rich scenic topography surrounding the historic Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga town, including the church’s belfry which has remained standing as testimony of the enormous disaster caused by the eruption of Mt. Mayon in 1814.

Sta Ana said that the exhilarating trail in 8-kilomter and 16-kilometer distance categories will loop in rivers and muddy farmlands hurdled by steep climbs and giant stones. Both categories will have a registration fee of P300.00.

Gun start time at 6:00 am at the Daraga Park in front of Daraga Municipal Hall.

She furthered that three winners each for men and women categories will be chosen in both 8k and 16k trail run.

Prizes at stake for 8k are P3,000.00 for the top finisher, P2,000 for second place and with P1,0000 for the third spot, while the same prizes await top honors in 16k yet with added gift packs containing sports paraphernalias.

Cagsawa Trail Run is organized through the partnership of the municipal government of Daraga, headed by Mayor Gerry Jaucian, and the province of Albay, led by Governor Joey Salceda, together with Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH), Bicol Cancer Center (BCC) and Dios Mabalos po Foundation Inc.

Sta. Ana averred that proceeds of running event will be used to help the cancer patients at Bicol Cancer Center along with the victims of the typhoon Sendong in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro to be fascilitated by Dios Mabalos Po Foundation.

Increasing livelihood opportunities creating more jobs in Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY -– With vibrant livelihood opportunities, a better quality of life for the people of the region may be expected.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Bicol believes that the region’s economic growth would be greatly dependent on the number of successful livelihood projects initiated and funded by the government.

DOLE Bicol regional director Atty. Alvin M. Villamor remains confident that the livelihood enterprises, if well managed and chosen perfectly, would become the ‘elixir’ of Bicol’s economy.

Villamor has predicted that a single DOLE-funded group project with at least 20 members, if successful, could generate an additional 20 more employees and could provide 40 more people with steady income in the form of linkages among businesses including suppliers, retailers and raw materials producers.

“Let’s take the Sea Weeds Pansit in Tiwi as an example. The members of the group are earning, the fishermen are earning the wholesalers are earning and the retailers are earning. In short everybody in the community is earning! This is the basic concept of the Community Enterprise Development” Villamor added.

The Community Enterprise Development (CED) is the flagship livelihood program of DOLE, that was launched in Bicol by Labor Secretary of Labor Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz last month.

The CED Program is aimed to unite all government livelihood grants into a target community enterprise. It is designed to complement and not to compete with existing government funded projects like the One-Town-One-Product (OTOP) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

CED Program in Bicol is being handled by TSSD Livelihood Focal Person, LEO III Russel Ulysses Nieves.

“CED is more like a Bayanihan approach in order to help a certain project succeed” Villamor explained.

Since January, DOLE Bicol has already released at least P3 million livelihood grants to some 10 group projects ranging from small to medium enterprises and extended individuals grants to over 150 persons under the DK-SK starter kit and Negosyo sa Kariton project region wide.

“We want to educate and fuel Bicolanos that in order for Bicol to grow economically, one must not be content to be an employee but rather strive to become and employer through livelihood undertakings and small businesses.” Villamor concluded.

DILG cites Legazpi as ‘Business-Friendly City’

THE CITY OF LEGAZPI has been labeled in the government’s campaign to achieve robust and long-term growth needed for countryside development and poverty reduction as one of the region’s most business-friendly local government units (LGUs).

The campaign is aimed at addressing the general perception that corruption, attributed to red tape, lack of political will on the part of local chief executives to carry out reforms and lack of vigilance on the part of the private sector to demand bureaucratic reformations is prevalent at the local level.

City Mayor Geraldine Rosal received the plaque of recognition representing the Business Permit and Licensing System (BPLS) Award that recognizes the city’s best practicing BPLS reforms. It was handed down by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Jessie Robredo in simple ceremonies held in the city on December 12.

The formation of business-friendly LGUs is being spearheaded by the DILG under its stepped up implementation of Project CURE (Comprehensive Response to Eliminate Red Tape) in the local level to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of LGUs in the delivery of basic goods and services through policy audit and compliance tracking of local anti-red tape initiatives.

Among the anti-red tape initiatives being looked into in determining business-friendly LGUs are their compliance with the formulation of citizen charters and establishment of their public assistance or complaint desks, one stop shops or walk-in services and courtesy lanes for pregnant women, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

In support o the campaign, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has entered into a memorandum circular with the DILG for the nationwide streamlining of BPLS reform project to speed up the issuance of these requirements by city and municipal governments in order to encourage more investors in their localities.

The City of Legazpi is by far among the only LGU in Bicol that have completed their streamlining operations, paving the way for these areas to become “havens of investment”, Robredo said during the awarding ceremonies.

This city boast of influxes of new businesses established over the past few years and those are proofs that indeed their LGUs have been able to make putting up investments in their respective localities easier and favorable on the part of the investors, the public and the LGUs that are now earning substantial revenues, the DILG chief said.

On the part of this city, Rosal said her place is now fully saturated by dozens of top class hotels, posh malls, giant bargain centers, convenient stores, recreational accommodations, transport terminals and famous restaurants including internationally known food chains.

“We have among others the billion-peso Embarcadero de Legazpi, a world-class tourist-oriented commercial hub sitting on a vast seafront property at the heart of the city; the Pacific Mall which is a multi-million-peso investment of the business giant, Gaisano Corp. and the Central Transport Terminal, a P300-million Public-Private Partnership (PPP) undertaking,” Rosal said.

The Liberty Commercial Center (LCC), the original mall in the city had also aggressively expanded its investments by putting up more stores at several strategic locations around the city while commercial banks have been continuously establishing local branches, she said.

Apart from these, more and more new investments in information technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) firms are coming in and taking in thousands of local workers, Rosal added.

DPWH in Bicol saves P130 million for 2011 projects

LEGAZPI CITY -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office here reported that the agency was able to generate a savings of more than P130 million in the implementation of its 2011 infrastructure projects in Bicol.

DPWH regional director Danilo E. Dequito said the savings were generated from the more than P4.044 billion released to the region as of the end of September for this year’s regular infrastructure program.

He said that the savings was generated as a result of competitive and transparent bidding of all the 160 projects for implementation by the regional and the 15 DPWH districts engineering offices in the six provinces of Bicol.

Dequito said that competitive bidding was one of the major policy reforms of DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson, in line with the “Tuwid na Daan” policy of the Aquino administration.

He added that because of the greater transparency in the bidding process, the cost of the projects went down by 4.23 percent.

Dequito said that P80.925 million pesos of the savings was generated by the regional office while P49.836 million was saved by the district offices.

The DPWH regional director said that out of 160 projects, 33 are being implemented by the regional office with the cost of P1.997 billion pesos while 127 is being implemented by the district offices with a total cost of P2.047 billion pesos.

He said 84 of the projects have been completed while 63 is still on-going while 13 has not yet been started with an over-all 45.05 percent accomplishment or 1.64 positive slippage.

According to my Mom, it got flooded in some parts pf Polangui but that was few days ago and they quickly subsided.

I saw the news clips. The national TV should have updated the news that everything is okay now.
