PDI read-along takes center stage in PH-US humanitarian mission in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—More than 3,000 children trooped to a series of reading activities on the first three days of the six-day PH-US Pacific Angel humanitarian mission in Albay province, an official of the Philippine Navy said Thursday.
Lieutenant Darwin Nieva, spokesman of the Joint Task Force Bayanihan, said the prototype for their “Kiddie Corner and Feeding” program was the read-along of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which was a partner during the anniversary celebration of the Philippine Navy last year.
Nieva said the children’s corners in four designated sites were packed with kids who sat through six reading sessions held each day per site.
The sites, he said, included central Bayanihan in Barangay (village) Tagas and the Binitayan Elementary School, both in Daraga town, and the two mobile sites in the towns of Guinobatan and Sto. Domingo.
Initiated by volunteers from the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Daraga chapter and the Dios Mabalos Po Foundation, the program catered to children whose elders had waited in line for the medical and dental services at the sites.
Young professionals, businessmen, US doctors and Air Force personnel served as the storytellers who interacted with the children in the reading event while the Dios Mabalos Po Foundation took charge of the feeding program.
Lt. Colonel Augusto Gaite of the Philippine Air Force, a key player in the mission, said at the start of the mission on Monday that at least 99 US soldiers had put up a tent hospital in this city with over 700 residents of Albay availing themselves of the free medical and dental services.
More than 10,000 residents of Albay were expected to benefit from the mission, said Lt. Col. Michael Black of the US Air Force and head of Pacific Angel.

Good news! I saw the huge lot of the 500-room hotel that was mentioned here before. It is the lot near the bars like Opisina. The name is not yet disclosed. 3rd quarter of the year is the construction.

Expect more national conventions next year and so on. Indeed, Legazpi is a convention city!

I went to gaisano and bought some groceries. It's good that some of the Legazpeños are doing their own part for the 'bawal ang plastic sa Albay'. Bukod sakuya na nagdara ki bag para sa groceries, may nahiling man ako na may bitbit man ki tote bag at pig abot sa bagger para duman ilaraag su pinamakal niya. Para duman sa mga meat products na babakalun nindo, magdara kamo ki laganan (e.g. Ice cream boxes).

I'm just wondering kung maka-comply lahat ng stores, stalls and malls nito? While some are starting to use paper bags, I still doubt it. I hope I'm wrong though.:ohno: Mas mahal siguro ang paper bag but indeed that's environment-friendly.:)

There is also a property near DBP (6,912 sq.meters) known as Dinagaan. This is a huge property which the owner proposed to sell at a discounted price to the City. The City can in turn sell it to a developer at the prevailing market price of a prime commercial lot (possible huge profit or funds for the City) subject to the City clearing the property with illegal settlers. Or the City simply buy it from the owner at a reasonable price and use the commercial lot for City office buildings, housing, etc..

Nice to know sir! I practically grew up (most of the 90s) near the old bus terminal (now Legazpi public market) hehe. We had a small carinderia in one of the buildings there; so, on weekdays we would stay there because it's closer to SAA. I can still remember the old Philtranco terminal and the Pineda ancestral house along F. Imperial St. The place was full of trees back then. When Pacific Mall was being built in the late 90s, construction work went on even during nighttime (the pile driver made a lot of noise, haha). It was nice to see the steel frame of the mall rising from behind the fence.

Sad news, His Eminence Jose T. Cardinal Sanchez passed away early this morning.

Cardinal Sanchez was born in Pandan, the Philippines, on March 17, 1920, and ordained priest for the Diocese of Nueva Caceres on May 12, 1946. Among his assignments was being Parish Priest of St. Gregory the Great Parish, in Old Albay District, Legazpi City.

Named Bishop of Lesvi, he received his episcopal consecration on February 5, 1968. He served as the Coadjutor Bishop of Lucena from December 12, 1972, then as Bishop of Lucena from September 25, 1976. On January 12, 1982 he was promoted as Archbishop of Nueva Segovia. He has served in the Administrative Council of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines since 1970 and as President of the Episcopal Commission for the Apostolate of the Laity since 1976.

He was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on October 30, 1985. He was made a cardinal during the Consistory of June 28, 1991, and also became, one month later, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy. Cardinal Sanchez retired from this position on June 15, 1996.

Requiem Aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetuae luceat eis. Requiescat in pace.

OK man po pading Brandon kung makgaigwang 7/11 digdi sa Albay. I bet in the next few years magkakaigwa na man digdi. It's enough for Legazpi to have 2 or 3 7/11s so as not to saturate the market. Siguro saro sa Old Albay then saro man sa Legazpi Port. Tapos sa Daraga and Tabaco tigsaro man.

May pagka-mapili baga kaya ang Mcdo sa pagpili ki site ninda. Haha. Gusto ninda sa pwesto na heavy talaga ang foot traffic. Sa centro kuta pwede rin. Space lang talaga ang problem.

OK man po pading Brandon kung makgaigwang 7/11 digdi sa Albay. I bet in the next few years magkakaigwa na man digdi. It's enough for Legazpi to have 2 or 3 7/11s so as not to saturate the market. Siguro saro sa Old Albay then saro man sa Legazpi Port. Tapos sa Daraga and Tabaco tigsaro man.

May point ka man but the thing is, 7/11 is different from LCC Expressmart as it is a 24 hour convenience store. Unless LCC makes it's stores 24/7 it would not be a direct competition to 7/11 so sa hiling ko dai man yan malulugi. dai sana ma oversaturate.

They are competitive, believe me.

SM can even compete in China and Guam while 7- Eleven being an international brand can compete anywhere in the world.

From what I heard there will be three conversions of Lucky 9 in Albay. Lucky 9 Legazpi, Tabaco and Ligao. South Star Drug (SSD) owner is the local franchisee of 7-Eleven Bicol. They also own the Lucky 9 convenience stores.

7- Eleven identifies the site, then SSD will franchise the store if they agree, if not, the company builds it. In Naga 2 are franchised by SSD 4 are company owned.

Lucky 9 Pili was converted to 7 Eleven and the one in CWC was franchised by SSD.
