Albay CIRCA calls for participation in Earth Hour (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=266342)
By Mike Dela Rama

LEGAZPI CITY, March 24 (PNA) -– The Albay Center for Initiative Research for Climate Change Adaptation (CIRCA) calls on Albayanos to switch off their lights at exactly 8:30 in the evening simultaneously with people across the globe on Saturday (March 27) for the “Earth Hour 2010” as a way to trumpet pleas for people to start mending their wasteful ways and save Planet Earth.

CIRCA executive director Nhong Rangasa said Albayanos, being good environmental citizens, can make an impact on this side of the biosphere.

He said that the choices Albayanos will make at 8:30 p.m. on March 27 will underscore the stark reminder of climate change now occurring in many parts of the globe, adding that the one hour “lights out” will translate into “an immense amount of fuel burning."

Rangasa also sought the public's solidarity on Earth Hour 2010. “El Nino is a reminder that we should reduce the amount of carbon footprint and rebuild our forests."

CIRCA has requested the Albay Electric Cooperative (Aleco) to switch off the power supply on Saturday for at least one hour. (PNA)

After ALECO’s financial turnaround, NPC pulls out from its management (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/249480/after-aleco-s-financial-turnaround-npc-pulls-out-its-management)
By MYRNA M. VELASCO, March 25, 2010, 3:22pm

After injecting efficiency and financial turnaround in Albay Electric Cooperative (ALECO), state-run National Power Corporation (NPC) is set to cap its 20-month takeover at the distribution utility with the forthcoming entry of a new management team. The operations and management manager of ALECO under German Silva as underpinned by a management contract with NPC, noted that company president Froilan Tampinco already gave instruction “to facilitate the formal, peaceful and systematic turnover of ALECO to the new management team.”

The state-run power firm was reportedly given 30 days to facilitate the turnover of command. Following series of financial losses, NPC reported that ALECO finally logged a net income of P153.47 million in 2009. The electric cooperative’s string of losses started in 2005 with P181 million; more than P312 million in 2006, P401 million in 2007 and P242 million in 2008.

Such dismal financial performance then prompted the government to facilitate management takeover of ALECO; and intervention was made thru the state-owned power firm. With ALECO now on the turnaround page, it appears that it even fares better than NPC which is reportedly bleeding red on the financial front.

“We are glad to report that in the past one year and eight months that we have undertaken the management of ALECO, for the first time in at least five years, it was able to post a net income of P153.47 million,” Silva noted. He added that as far as NPC management is concerned, it had been “a very fruitful 20 months,” stressing that this has been part of its service commitment to the people of Albay.

“We hope that whoever will take over the operations of ALECO, they will be able to sustain if not further improve on the gains that we attained so far,” Silva noted. The state-run power firm stressed that it will be transferring ALECO to the upcoming management’s hands in “far better condition than when we started,” and can only hope that “it will not slide back to its former self.”

NPC reiterated that its takeover at ALECO was built on the mission of effecting recovery in the electric cooperative “from debt and technical and operational retardation.” “With the entry of the National Power Management Team, reforms implemented resulted in better operational efficiency (less brownouts), better voltage condition, better service, increased reliability and a more stable power system,” the power firm executive stressed further.

In the first place, what were the reasons for the near bankruptcy of ALECO in the past. There are so many questions to be asked here. Why did ALECO suddenly became a profitable operations just within a span of 20 months. What caused the sudden turnaround when they have been operating at a loss for so many years prior to NPC's takeover?

Again, the question is, who will take over as new management. Are they turning it back to the old managers? Who will appoint the management team, the local politicos again?

Did anybody's head roll here for mismanagement?

San Miguel mulls bullet train project
By Mary Ann LL. Reyes (The Philippine Star) Updated March 26, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has set its sights on what could probably be its most ambitious and expensive project to date as it spearheads the Philippines’ bid to become the first country in Southeast Asia to build and operate a bullet train.
SMC president and CEO Ramon Ang told The STAR that they have commissioned a group that includes international companies with experience in bullet trains to study the possibility of building a bullet train railway that will run from the north to the south end of Luzon.

As planned, the bullet train railway will run the Laoag-Manila-Bicol route. As for the right-of-way acquisitions, Ang said this will be up to the government.

He revealed that they hope to submit their unsolicited proposal to government by the end of the year.
SMC’s top executive expressed optimism about the possibilities that this venture will present to the country’s tourism industry. “We want to help tourism. If nobody dared, we will,” he said in an interview. A high-speed train service is also expected to help boost not only tourism but also the economy in general.

Travel from Manila to Laoag takes around 12 hours by land. The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has a train service that runs the Manila-Bicol route – the Bicol Express which carries as much as 20,000 passengers daily – although it has not been operational for three years due to heavy damage wrought by typhoons. There are plans to resume operations before President Arroyo’s term ends.
Both the Manila to Laoag and Manila to Bicol lines are also currently accessible by air and there are public buses that ply the two routes.

Running speeds of as fast as 300 kilometers per hour, a bullet train can cut travel time to the far ends of Luzon from Manila significantly. Fares are also expected to be cheaper than plane fares but higher than bus fares.
With SMC’s plan, the Philippines will be pitted against Vietnam in the bid to build Southeast Asia’s first bullet train.
The Vietnam project is estimated to cost $56 million and may choose either the group of Sumitomo Corp. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, or Itochu Corp. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, all Japanese companies, for the project. The two groups currently run lines in Japan similar to what would be built in Vietnam.

Vietnam is said to be favoring Japanese technology for the 1,555-kilometer Hanoi-to-Ho Chi Minh City line as Vietnam “is geographically similar to Japan with not enough land and too many people, and a long coastal line,” Nguyen Huu Bang, chair and CEO of Vietnam Railways Corp., was quoted as saying.

The Nomura Research Institute has helped with initial studies for the project, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will fund a feasibility study that will start in June, Vietnam Railways said.
Work on the Vietnam bullet train line is due to start in 2012, with services beginning on the first section by 2020. The high-speed train will probably be financed by a mix of overseas development aid, state funding and public-private partnerships.
A ticket for the full Hanoi-to-HCM City high-speed rail journey may cost about 75 percent of the average current plane fare, Bang said.

China is also working on building high-speed trains to support its surging economy. The country in December opened a high-speed rail link of more than 1,000 kilometers between the cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan.

Back in 2004, South Korea became the second Asian nation after Japan to build a high-speed train service between major cities.
The Tokaido Shinkansen, connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka was inaugurated in 1964 as the first shinkansen (high speed train or bullet train line) and the world’s first high speed train service. At that time the trains already ran at about 200 km/h. Nowadays they reach speeds of 300 km/h.

We can only hope.

But since it's San Miguel who is initiating the project, there must be some hope into it. It will fail if it will be given again the run around by our politicians and government bureaucrats.

The optimist that I am, I would like to give it a chance.

Maybe the government should just allow the project to take over the properties of PNR. I don't know.

the PNR corplan according to Mr. Beda Priela (PNR Consultant) is after establishing all the existing rehabilitated railways from north down to south next would be the fast tracking of the proposed MRT/LRt type which will be constructed just above the PNR lane, if San Miguel is mulling for such project it would mean there will be 3 commuter lane.

Agree. There is so much economic gains to be derived from this project. The next president whoever he is, should give this top priority. Even if this takes to 10 years to develop, there is so much in store for us if this will become a reality.

Expropriating a new railway line will take forever, and this will derail its implementation. Allowing it to use the existing PNR properties will fast track its implementation. In order not to disturb the commuter train route, the bullet train tracks should just be elevated.

Interesting:

This is our city's namesake in Spain -- the city of Legazpi in the Guipúzcoa province of the Autonomous Community of Basque Country, northern Spain. Very picturesque too! Just like our Legazpi.

Legazpi is a town of about 9000 inhabitants located on top of Urola valley, in Guipuzcoa. Surrounded by many mountains, and near to the Aizkorri mountain range, its predominant economic activity is industrial (manufacture, metalurgics, plastics).

The rich industrial tradition of Legazpi comes from the Middle Ages, when transformation of iron minerals was given by "haizeolak" (meaning "factories moved by wind"). Later, during XIVth century, the energy of water replaced wind in the process, and several "iron factories moved by water" were founded ("ur", water and "ola", factory are the two components of the river Urola, crossing Legazpi). This industrial tradition had its continuity in modern times, and Legazpi became one of the most important metallurgic centres in the industrialised modern Basque Country.

One of the XIVth century factories (called Mirandaola) has remained until today, being the heart of an interesting complex where traditions and ways of living from the past are shown. - Source: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legazpi,_Spain)

I think the conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was from Guipúzcoa. We should reach out to our namesake city and form a sisterhood/alliance agreement. :okay:

Is luxury still worth it? (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=561303&publicationSubCategoryId=451)

Color splash: Misibis Bay Raintree resort at sunrise

MANILA, Philippines - Many people would argue that the sea, viewed from anywhere, whether from a barebones hut or a five-star villa, is still the sea. That it doesn’t matter how you get to a destination, as long as you get there. That shampoo is essentially soap for the hair and it doesn’t matter if you pay P80 or P800 for a bottle.

Ever since the Chinese perfected the art of imitation, and airlines began with the budget route, and the boutique service trend started, we’ve been debating the merit of paying extra for the “real thing” or for something more luxurious. Do brand names and long legacies really matter in an age of flash-in-the-pan trends and four-minute attention spans?

Sprawled on Cagraray Island along the coastline of Albay in Bicol is the Misibis Bay Raintree Resort, a small, 38-room vacation spot being touted as a luxury playground. In Misibis, you have the option to either sink in a plush day bed facing the ocean or swim in one of their three temperature-precise (it seems like it anyway) pools. Idling is welcome, but the real draw is the activities: zip lining, wall climbing, wind surfing, water inflatables, mountain biking, traversing the surrounding hills on an ATV.

When Kerastase wanted to re-acquaint the media with their product range and their upcoming products and services for 2010, they chose Misibis Bay. A classic case of like attracting like. The French brand is one of the most well-known luxury haircare brands in the world, and what Kerastase promises is the same thing Misibis does: care that is attuned to your every need minus the fuss and the flash.

And this is where the edge of luxury manifests.

Why do we pay more for a hair cleanser with a French name or for a night spent in memory foam and snuggled under 600-thread count sheets? Doing so for the posh acquaintance it affords is silly and a waste of money. Luxury becomes truly luxurious when it gives you an extra, something beyond what is usually expected.

So if a shampoo gives you that added bounce — but a much-wanted bounce — then yes. If a resort gives you 24-hour butler service — not just 12 — then yes. If it gives you an experience you will always appreciate, then yes, luxury is worth it. And if it cuts down your traveling time from a one-hour coaster journey to a 15-minute chopper ride, then yes, go for luxury.

It’s easy to find a pretty resort — they’re sprouting up faster than mushrooms during the monsoon season. It’s easy to buy shampoo backed up by a 150-year history. And if you are really just looking for a sizeable bed and a clean crapper, or haircare that will clean your hair and maybe keep it from becoming dry at the root, then it’s also easy to be indiscriminate. It’s like choosing sunscreen. SPF 30 is good enough, but a 45 will go a longer way and will benefit you more in the long run.

Kerastase and its broad range of products will give you more than you want but exactly what you need. They have haircare for straight but limp hair, something for straight but dry hair, curly and frizzy, for dry scalp, aging hair, for colored but dry hair, for colored hair that’s not so dry but needs to retain its color. It’s the butler for your tresses, a very efficient one.

The sea is still the sea, but you do experience it a little bit better when you don’t have to worry about where to lay down your towel. Like they say, it is the journey getting there that alters the outcome of the ultimate destination.

I don't think so. This is the crown jewel of Albay at the moment. We should keep on promoting it. Although it may be the same place, angle and sorts they are from different people who have been to misibis. If we stop doing what we are doing here might as well tell the other resort photos in other threads to stop as well since it's all I see in other threads too.

Bicol politics heats up as local campaign starts (http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/news/regions/14177-bicol-politics-heats-up-as-local-campaign-starts)
Saturday, 27 March 2010 00:00
BY RHAYDZ B. BARCIA CORRESPONDENT

LEGAZPI CITY: As the local campaign kicked off Friday across the country, a war of slogan and political jingles were aired over radio stations while colorful motorcades created long traffic jam in Metro Legazpi.

Two political camps vying for mayoral post showed off forces on the first day of local campaign here. The two strongest political contenders in this city’s mayoral post are Geraldine Rosal, wife of incumbent Mayor Noel Rosal who belongs to Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro of Lakas-Kampi CMD, and Lorna Cristobal of Liberal Party. Rosal first heard mass at Saint Rafael Parish at 7 a.m. together with her running mate Vitterio “Bitoy” Roces and city councilor candidates while Cristobal and her running mate Michael “Mike” Imperial together with the entire ticket attended the service at the Saint Gregory the Great Cathedral here.

After the mass a color-coded motorcade follow through here. The Rosal group wheeled on towards the city proper to southern and northern areas of this city with its long array of motorbikes and vehicles that participated in the motorcade bringing with them green and white balloons as well as flaglets.

While the road where Cristobal group passed through turned out to be as river of yellow color signifying the familiar color of the Liberal Party (LP) also veered on the northern villages which composed of upland areas before going through the city proper and southern areas to prevent a crisscross with the camp of Rosal.

A neck-to-neck mayoral fight is expected in May 11, 2010 polls here as two wealthy opposing political camps from administration party and opposition group with strong machinery is expected. Mayor Rosal of Lakas-Kampi CMD party whose term of office will end on June 30, fielded his wife Geraldine against mayoral candidate Cristobal of LP. This is the first-ever mayoral contest in the history of Legazpi City wherein two women will be vying for mayoral seat.

Cristobal is the wife of Department of Public Works and Highways Assistant Regional Director Oscar Cristobal in Bicol. The merger of Rosal and Roces as well as the Cristobal and Imperial camps are being predicted here as the most powerful political players with a neck-to-neck contest.

Looking back, the Imperials in 2000 coalesced briefly with the Rosals to topple the administration of former city mayor Imelda Roces, the political rival of second district solon Carlos “Papay” Imperial.

Representative Imperial, Uncle of Michael Imperial, fielded Noel Rosal for the mayoral post against Martin Roces, son of then congressional candidate and outgoing then Mayor Imelda Roces. Rosal won the 2001 election against Roces through the help of Representative Imperial but the two families broke off in middle of 2003. Since then, a wedge has been drawn between the two political families.

In 2007 election, the Imperials and Roces families combined forces to bring down Rosal but he was once again given the mandate by the Legazpeños to govern while the Imperials have completely tumbled from 42 years of power.

While the gubernatorial race in Albay is being considered by political observers here as the most lousy fight in the history as no bigtime or political kingpin in Albay risked to go against incumbent Gov. Joey Salceda this May 10, election. Salceda is being considered here as unopposed although Linda “Day” Montayre of the third congressional district challenge his (Governor Salceda) candidacy.

Albay Joins Observance of Earth Hour 2010 (http://piabikol.blogspot.com/)

LEGAZPI CITY (March 26) — The Center for Initiative Research for Climate Change Adaptation (CIRCA) in Albay calls on Albayanos to switch off their lights from 8:30 until 9:30 in the evening in response to the global observance of Earth Hour 2010 tomorrow (March 27). Manuel “Nhong” Rangasa, CIRCA executive director, said Albay, known globally and even declared as global model for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and mitigation initiatives, should be among the forerunners in such endeavors and show the world what we can do to protect and save the planet.

“Simultaneous with people across the globe, the switching off of lights in our homes, offices, and establishments, among others, will serve as an avenue to appeal to our people start mending their wasteful ways, protect and conserve, and save Planet Earth,” Rangasa explained. “Albayanos, living up to the reputation as good environment-friendly citizens, can make an impact on this side of the biosphere,” he added.

Rangasa stressed that Albayanos’ choice and taking part in the Earth Hour 2010 will underscore the stark reminder of climate change now really occurring with notable adverse implications in many parts of the globe, adding that the one hour “lights off” will translate into “an immense decrease in amount of fuel burning."

“El Nino is a reminder that we should reduce the amount of carbon footprint and rebuild our forests," he related. This year’s observance of the Earth Hour aims to be the largest environmental mass-participation event in Philippine history, according to organizers in the country. Earth Hour 2010 hopes to inspire 15 Million Filipinos in 1000 cities and towns to join the global switch off.

Earth Hour movement symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in this fight, protecting our future and that of future generations.

Now in its third year in the country and envisioned as a celebration of climate change solutions, Earth Hour Philippines aims to inspire 1000 towns, cities and municipalities to switch off and join in the revelry – in an environmentally-conscious manner, that is.

Many of the nation’s most iconic landmarks are expected to dim their lights in the largest call for action on climate change. Cities from around the world, from Europe to Africa, are expected to join in.

Crafted to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off lights for an hour to deliver a powerful message on the need for climate change solutions.

This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world, becoming a worldwide phenomenon in 2008 and 2009 – where the Philippines placed first globally in terms of town and city participation. (MALoterte, PIA V)

As per Garycooper had been suggesting about the pedestrianization of Peñaranda and Part of Rizal street here in our forum. I am posting this video where Mayor Bloomberg of NYC is doing a speech about his city pedestrian policies and finally making the project permanent. This includes the world famous Time Square and Broadway. This is very doable in our city and would be a boon to retailers along that street to be able to compete with Pacific Mall & Embarcadero. I am praying that one day a radical Mayor of Legazpi picks up this concept and start implementing it to the city scape of Legazpi.

may Wi-Max na palan an Globe sa Albay.

Is it the real wi-max or it's just a product name for them. I find it rather hard to believe that they will have wi-max when our broadband capacity only peaks at about 2mbps as compared to most countries who has at least 6mbps and above. Wi-max is starting to roll out in developed countries the tech has been around for two years but the adoption seems too slow since it will directly compete with 3G and wireless communication cause mobile handsets can be developed for wi-max thereby making calls allover the world free. You just bneed to pay a monthly bill for you Internet.

^That's according to an insider from Globe.. They started rolling-out wi-max in select areas in Albay. Too bad its only 1Mbps... makaskas pa su smartbroken @ 2Mbps. I am expecting that Globe would offer wi-max somewhere @ 10Mbps. Wait and see wara pa pano competition sa provinces. Wi-tribe is starting to roll-out in mega-manila.

RP tops Earth Hour for second straight year (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/187202/rp-tops-earth-hour-for-second-straight-year)
CARMELA LAPEÑA, GMANews.TV
03/28/2010 | 06:51 PM

(Updated 8:23 p.m.)The Philippines has once again topped the global participation in Earth Hour, the biggest climate awareness campaign in the world. According to Gregg Yan, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) communications officer, around 1,076 towns and cities in the country switched off their lights for an hour last Saturday, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

“This placed the Philippines as first in the world for the second time in a row," Yan said, citing information from the Department of Energy (DoE). According to the Earth Hour blog, more than 1000 cities, towns and municipalities in the country took part in the annual event.

“This amazing show of support for Earth Hour was complimented by some of the countries most iconic landmarks switching off as well, including Manila Cathedral, Fort Bonifacio, Global City, Rizal Monument and El Nido Limestone Cliffs," it said.

The three-year-old Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007, with 2.2 million residents and 2,100 businesses participating. It has since spread around the world.

In support of this year's campaign, several establishments held events celebrating Earth Hour. Bonifacio Global City was host to a street party featuring performances from Up Dharma Down, Cynthia Alexander, Noel Cabangon, Pedicab, Lou Bonnevie and Earthday Jam, and Gorgoro. Mall of Asia had a Switch Off Ceremony with performances by Arnel Pineda, Moymoy Palaboy, Ballet Philippines, and Philippine All Stars.

Fans of GMANews.TV on Facebook shared their own plans for Earth Hour, mostly choosing to stay home and spend time with the family.

Julius R. Satparam of Legazpi City, Albay, said he would attend the Bicol University Kick-Off Party. This event will incorporate an hour for Mother Earth - a lights-off party where the moon and fireflies would provide the only illumination. Richard Guguyon Gadit shared that Katribu Partylist would celebrate with 60 gong beats for the 60 minutes of Earth Hour.

Misibis Bay’s resort paradise (http://loqal.ph/travel-and-outdoors/2010/02/09/misibis-bays-resort-paradise/)
By Alexander Villafania

CAGRARAY ISLAND, ALBAY — Hidden in a beach off the southeastern tip of Albay’s Cagraray Island is Misibis Bay Raintree Resort, one of the latest in a line of “small luxury” hotels in the Philippines. This is one of the most upscale luxury resorts in the Philippines and is in the same league as the El Nido island resorts of Palawan, the Shangri-La Boracay Resort and even Amanpulo. Misibis Bay Raintree Resort offers the ultimate rest and recreation for those looking to bask in serene beachfront living while experiencing the amenities of a five-star hotel.

Owned by the same group that manages the Discovery Suites and Discovery Shores Boracay, Misibis Bay proves to be a venerable counterpart to many luxury resorts here and abroad as HSAI Raintree looks at pushing the limits of five-star rating.

Many have yet to partake of Misibis Bay Raintree’s facilities as the resort has yet to be finished — the first phase of construction is only about 80-percent done. However, the resort already held its soft opening in late 2008 and some select visitors have already stayed in the expansive resort, which is situated in a 400-hectare prime estate in Cagraray Island that will also be developed for residential use. Its owners are allocating P1.6 billion over the next few years to develop the area.

The first phase of the construction of the resort has already resulted in the establishment of at least 30 villas that are a fusion of European and American styles. The designs of the structures do not follow the standard apartment-style building common among hotels. Instead, the villas are composed of three to four rooms with doors placed on each side. This gives the image that the villa is just one room.

Some of the villas have second floors, which is reserved for big groups of guests who want their private domain. In fact, these large rooms are split into two smaller rooms — each one with at least two beds, dressing cabinets and bathrooms. In addition, some of these big rooms have their own kitchen, dining tables, and yes, jacuzzis.

Apart from the layout of the villas, among their surprising design features are huge glass windows that occupy nearly 60 percent of the walls, giving guests inside a full view of everything outside. These also come with huge pull-down blinds when guests want their privacy.

Likewise, technology completes the guests’ overall experience. Apart from the 32-inch widescreen TV, there is also a JBL speaker set serves as the alarm clock and radio , and can also be used to dock iPods. WiFi is also available in just about every room in the resort.

The resort also did away with rectangular pools and instead put one asymmetric, contiguous pool that runs between some of the villas. Those in villas closest to the pool can literally jump into the water once they step out of their doors. There is another pool for kids while another pool features a small, hollowed out area that houses the minibar. Of course, the blue waters off the nearby beach also beckons to those who want to take a dip in the ocean.

One of the projects underway in Misibis Bay Raintree is a boat docking area. Already, a structure has been built to accommodate guests coming in via ocean travel. The docking bay itself is developed with the most affluent guests in mind. But travel via boat would seem to be more pleasurable compared to land travel; going to Misibis Bay from the Legazpi Airport using the resort’s transfer coaches takes about one hour. The coach itself will have to cross the Sulu Channel via “mini-RoRo” ferry from the main island of Albay to Cagraray, which is a less than one kilometer across. The process of rolling on and off a ferry takes about 20 minutes. A bridge would have been more efficient.

But perhaps that is the appeal of going to Misibis Bay. First-time visitors will have quite a surprise to be welcomed in a luxury resort after taking a trip across the picturesque countryside of Albay.

If this is true the well and good... but I still believe it is not the real wi-max. Here's the definition of a real wimax.

source: (http://www.wimax.com/education)

ujbFwiPUvUc

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, also known as IEEE 802.16, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks". WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100 - 300 feet (30 - 100m).

With WiMAX, WiFi-like data rates are easily supported, but the issue of interference is lessened. WiMAX operates on both licensed and non-licensed frequencies, providing a regulated environment and viable economic model for wireless carriers.

WiMAX can be used for wireless networking in much the same way as the more common WiFi protocol. WiMAX is a second-generation protocol that allows for more efficient bandwidth use, interference avoidance, and is intended to allow higher data rates over longer distances.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:

I just did a research about Globe WiMax. They do have launched it in the Philippines but they seem to be capping it at 512kbps which is barely a world accepted broadband speed. WiMax is supposed to provide Wi-Fi speeds at a large area. It's basically Wi-Fi on steroids. So Globes cap at 512kbps will be an anti consumer move and the government should do something about it.

Heard that Wi-Tribe is fast but the thing is they still have a bandwidth cap at 6GB per month. See here (http://www.yugatech.com/blog/telecoms/wi-tribe-doubles-up-bandwidth-to-6gb/). If you go past 6GB, they will throttle down the connection speed. 6GB is simply not enough, for me at least. If they lift the cap I might consider subscribing hehe. Anyway, it has been reported that Sun Broadband Wireless is planning on expanding their coverage to the provinces. I hope I can use SBW in Legazpi soon. Smart Bro and Globe Tattoo are unreliable if you're far from the city center.

Maria Venus Raj, inalis na bilang Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2010 (http://bomboradyo.com./newsdetails1.asp?ID=139842)

http://www.pilipinasbeauties.com/galphotos/normal/legaspi_city,_maria_venus_raj.jpg

The Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc is NOT doing these young ladies a favor by not doing proper due diligence. It appears that these disqualifications have happened before. It is not right to question these ladies qualifications after the coronation. This should have been done even before they were introduced as “official candidates”!

PCG, MARINA strengthen security measures in all ports for Holy Week (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=267195)
By Mike de la Rama

LEGAZPI CITY, Mar. 30 (PNA) – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA)have strengthened its security measures in major sea ports in Bicol region this Holy Week to ensure safety of all sea vessel passengers. “We are strictly enforcing the ma retime safety regulation to ensure the seaworthiness of sea vessels,” MARINA regional director Lucita Madarang said.

Madarang said that her office would also provide special permit to operate for those passenger sea vessels on a case to case basis due to the increasing number of passengers this Holy Week. She also said that aside from Marina and PCG, other government agencies have been taking necessary measures in connection with the Lakbay Alalay.

"To avoid delay, we encourage all passengers as well as operators of passenger vessels to cooperate with the PCG," she said , adding that “medical and passenger assistance booth have been set up in all Bicol sea ports."

On the other hand, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bicol director Danilo Manalang has ordered the setting up of Motorists' Assistance Centers (MAC) along the national highways of Bicol for the influx of travelers in time for the observance of Holy Week. Manalang said that every District Engineering Office (DEO) across the region has an existing organized team ready to give free roadside emergency repair assistance to traveling public during long holidays.

Dubbed "Lakbay Alalay", the assistance centers are manned by engineers, car mechanics, equipment operators and other service crews. This Holy Week, "Lakbay Alalay" will start on Wednesday (March 31) from 6:00 a.m. to Monday (April 5) at 12:00 noon.

MAC is carried out in coordination with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units (LGU). In Albay, MACs will be set up in Daang Maharlika junctions of Legazpi City-Sto. Domingo-Tabaco City-Camarines Sur boundary road; Basud in Sto. Domingo; Busay in Daraga; and, Paulog Station in Ligao City.

In Camarines Norte, motorists can get in touch with MACs located in Tabugon, Sta. Elena Section and Tigbinan, Labo Section. Motorists plying Catanduanes routes can find MACs in Manambrag, San Andres; Pagsangahan, San Miguel; Bato; and, in Sicmil, Gigmoto.

In Camarines Sur, "Lakbay Albay" is available at DPWH Sub-Office in Agrupacion, Ragay; Tambo, Pamplona,; Cam. Sur Traffic Mgt. Group (TMG) Headquarters, Daang Maharlika in Concepcion Grande, Naga City; Mambulo Nuevo, Libmanan; DPWH Junction, Tigaon; Lagonoy Poblacion; Crossing/Diversion, Baao; and, Bato Resthouse, Agos, Bato.

MAC personnel will keep watch on motorists from Pepita Park in Bucalbucalan and Multi-Purpose Barangay Hall in San Pedro, Irosin, all in the province of Sorsogon. While in Masbate, MACs will be all over the place with 12 centers put up to attend to the needs of motorists in the island province, including Junction. Milagros-Baleno-Lagta Road; Tawad-Balud Road; Masbate-Milagros/Masbate-Cataingan Road; Jct. Buenavista-Cawayan Road, Jct., Buenavista; Jct. Buenavista-Cawayan Road, Bgy. Del Carmen; Jct. ;54057849']Interesting:

This is our city's namesake in Spain -- the city of Legazpi in the Guipúzcoa province of the Autonomous Community of Basque Country, northern Spain. Very picturesque too! Just like our Legazpi.

por chalo84 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chalo84/)

* * *

I think the conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was from Guipúzcoa. We should reach out to our namesake city and form a sisterhood/alliance agreement. :okay:

Yes, he was. This was taken from wikipedia:

Born in 1502, Miguel López de Legazpi was the youngest son of Don Juan Martínez López de Legazpi and Doña Elvira de Gurruchátegui. He was born to a noble family and lived in the town of Zumárraga, in the Basque province of Guipúzcoa in Spain.

Talaga? Wala na ba sya sa PBN-6?

Matagal na po syang wala. After his PBN stint he hosted a talk show on DCTV titled Bicol Connections. Pero wala na rin ata 'to ngayon.

Yeah 98.0 talaga. Mali ang frequency nila. Dapat 98.7. Dapat higher frequency na ipit na ipit na sya. It plays all hit songs. Wow Love FM sya.

There is 90.2 sa Tahao but I don't know the name.

If all the FM stations that ever operated in Legazpi would be still operating today then we would have many stations already.

90.7 DWDA (AMEC's Radio station)
91.5 Magik FM
92.3 Home Radio
93.9 MOR
95.5 RC
96.3 Campus
97.1 OK
97.9 MR (whatever happened to this station)
98.0
99.5 Love Radio
100.3
101.1
103.5 Star FM (this used to be the preferred FM station of jeepneys b4 MOR came along, sayang nawala sya after Reming destroyed its tower.)
105.9 CA Radio

does BU have its own FM station?

100.3 the beat was a station owned by DCTV. Its main DJ was Freddie Chicken. It played jazz rythm and blues parang 103.5 crossover sa Manila. Kaya lang di nagsustain kasi kulang ang market.

^103.5 DWJP went off air because of management issues a year before Albay was struck by reming. I was happy then kasi dai na akong kakompetensya sa radio.. angguton pano si papa pag-naliliwat sa sa 97.1 DWGB [OKFM]. Another station debuted just few months after DWJP went off-air. I remember it was holy-week then when 92.3 DWQA went on air. Magayonon su jingles ninda.

^100.3 The Beat is a RADYO NATIN station affiliate of DZRH. IMO wala silang DJ's kasi piped-in from Manila ang music ninda 24/7. Smooth jazz flavored ang format bako arog kan ibang MBC stations na jologs.. LOVE RADIO! Sa Naga City igwa man kaini su 89.5 DZTR owned by Ateneo. Like most Radyo Natin stations low-power lang ini within the city limits lang ang signal. Sayang.

^97.9 DWMR went off-air around 1994 and resumed around 1997. I had the chance of listening to this station since 1984. "The Most Requested Song Station" jan sa 4th floor kan Patio Napal Building. Back in 1989 nakavisit na ako sa station ninda and they were using cassette tapes  and there's no dj's lahat voicetracked. Pareho sa States ngunyan sa mga fm stations sounded like they have live djs pero voicetracked or prerecorded lang.

^DWMR went off the air forever around the middle of 1999. These station was owned previously by YABUT FAMILY and was sold to MANNY VILLAR and was later bought by PLDT under Manny Pangilinan. :)

^Ang propagation kan AM signal mas harayo an naabot ta nagabounce back as compared sa FM band ta line of sight ang propagation kan signal.. Mind you, if you are going to tune in to AM band mas dakul kang madadangog na stations although weaker ang iba but an ordinary AM radio can pick up station as far as Davao starting 6pm. Ang mga AM stations sa Naga can also be heard in Albay especially in 1st & 3rd district and some portions of 2nd district and even in highlands of Sorsogon nakukuha. So kung may DZRH sa Naga & Sorsogon its not practical na magkaag pa sa Legazpi kasi abot man kan signal ninda.

Very dependent sa Legazpi hehe.

IFM is RMN. Sana gawin ng IFM ang DWRC but with a longer broadcasting hours kasi parang up to 6pm lang sya kaya bitin.

LEGAZPI CITY --- With the start of the campaign for local officials, two of the strongest political parties whose rival standard-bearers are considered running close to each other stormed Bicol last week to woo more voters on their respective sides.

Pitching in for her brother Noynoy of the Liberal Party, TV superstar Kris Aquino and her husband, PBA top cager James Yap, along with their celebrity son Baby James arrived in Albay on the eve of Palm Sunday and motored around Legazpi City. They also went radio hopping to reach more audience and discuss issues with local radio practitioners.

Along with some of its senatorial candidates, the Liberal Party entourage actually arrived in this city an hour ahead of Nacionalista Party presidential candidate Manny Villar and his senatoriables which also toured Legazpi City and Albay towards Naga City.

Upon arrival in this city, Villar’s motorcade practically cruised the same route toured by Kris and company.

In an interview, Villar said more governors across the country are joining his camp for the eventual victory on May 10, 2010.

Villar, as early as 2007 has been known to be recruiting prospective allies, mainly from the pro-administration Lakas-Kampi, considered to be the biggest and most organize political party under the watch of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The first Bicolano political kingpin to have joined Villar’s call and now Albay 2nd District Representive Al Francis Bichara.

Bichara was provincial chairman of Lakas-Kampi in Albay for nine years. He was appointed by President Arroyo as Ambassador to Lebanon after serving his full three terms as governor of Albay.

During the 2007 local election here, Bichara was the only Bicolano candidate who filed his certificate of candidacy under the Nacionalista Party. Hed won the congressional race over former Rep. Carlos “Carling” Imperial of the Nationalist People’s Coalition-Lakas Kampi alliance.

In Casiguran, Sorsogon, Mayor Edwin “Boboy” Hamor and his wife Ester joined Villar’s camp five months after the former’s election in 2007 under the Lakas-Kampi banner.

Hamor is now running for a seat in Congress on a head on collision with incumbent Rep. Salvador Escudero, father of opposition Senator Chiz Escudero.

Another noted Bicolano politicians to have joined Villar’s camp were Rep. Luis Villafuerte and his son Gov. Luis Raymund Villafuerte of Camarines Sur.

The elder Villafuerte was known to be a rabid ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and remains to be so, despite the fact that he has joined his son in endorsing Villar as their candidate for president.

Camarines Sur is the biggest province with the biggest number of voters throughout Bicol. The biggest political rally so far of the Nacionalista Party was vaunted to have been hosted by Camarines Sur Gov. LRay Villafuertelle in the spacious Freedom Sports Complex, located in Pili, Camarines Sur. News reports estimated the crowd to be over 200,000 where boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and TV host Willie Revillame as among Villar’s supercharged guests during that rally.

Some engineers, however, dismissed the estimated crowd to be an over-exaggeration because they claimed that the sports complex could not contain such number of people in one setting. The number as reported could be equivalent to the whole population of Naga City plus another small town.

Villar’s star-studded political rally in Pili, Camarines Sur with Gov. LRay Villafuerte as host was seen by many observers as a threatening response to the crowd drawn by Kris’ coming to the city where she was welcomed by outgoing Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo, LP national vice-president as host.

Before his big rally in Camarines Sur, Villar motored to Sorsogon after meeting with Albay officials led by Rep. Bichara in a closed door conference.

Bichara in a telephone interview told Bicol Mail that Villar did not conduct a political rally in Legazpi City due to hectic schedule.

May tanong lang po ako mga Bicolanos... from Malolos City, Bulacan kasi ako and I am planning to go to Legazpi City, Albay by plane. Tanong ko lang, mula sa Legazpi Airport, ilang oras at paano makapupunta sa Cagsawa Ruins sa Daraga, Albay? Salamat po.

One day lang po ang biyahe ko and my plane is about to fly by 10:00 AM from Pasay City and arrive there by 11:00 AM. Ang flight po pabalik ng Manila ay 2:00 PM. Abot po kaya? Salamat pong muli at Happy Easter na rin po pala.

ibig sabihin pag lapag mo ng legazpi airport mag checheck in ka na kaagad.what if ma delay ang flight mo? yari na..masyadong hectic ang sked mo nevertheless kaya mo pa rin marating ang cagsawa ruins nyan but i believe you'll most likely end up at the hands of some opportunist taxi or tricycle drivers...kasi you have little options left with little time at your disposal...anyway as soon as you step outisde the arrival's area, you'll be approached by a number of taxi or tricycle drivers then try to negotiate with them where you want to go and the pay you want to give them...enjoy your trip

i suggest lignon hill nature park, embarcadero... also try misibis at cagraray island.

how do we go to Misibis island from Legazpi and how long is it to get there? Is there any public beach resort where we could swim and is Misibis Raintree Resort(?) open for guests who are not going to check-in? :D
