View Full Version : New Pictures of Zagreb cathedral and Kapitol
bubach_hlubach February 2nd, 2005, 12:31 AM Zagreb, Croatia - Photos of cathedral and Kaptol
Kaptol is one of the oldest historical parts of Zagreb. The Gothic Cathedral, built from the 13th to the end of the 15th century, was renovated after the earthquake of 1880, when the neo-Gothic fasade with two high bell towers (105 m), which have become the symbol of Zagreb, was built.
Well, these photos are not freshly new, they were taken by myself in November 2004 lol, hope you like them :)

SinCity February 2nd, 2005, 01:13 AM Wow, :eek2: Bubach, again you show us the beauty of another part of Zagreb.
Thanks for the photos of Kaptol district.
Do you know as to when they anticipate the completion of the cathedrals renovations?
It would be so nice to finally see the scaffolding come down and finally see the twin 105 metre steeples rising like they always have over central Zagreb.

It would be so nice to finally see the scaffolding come down and finally see the twin 105 metre steeples rising like they always have over central Zagreb.
I think they said it is gonna take them at least a few years to complete renovation of the towers. Many statues and fragments have been taken down from the cathedral for cleaning and polishing.
And last winter i watched an interview with a guy that runs a small family company that does renovation work on the cathedral, so he says that him and his son, both will have their jobs on the cathedral until they retire. So i guess, it may take a little longer until the scaffolding is gonna be finally removed.
However, there's a lot of work that's gotta be done on the backside of the cathedral as well. I am not sure, though, if they are also gonna replace the roof.

They have been working on it for the best part of a decade, probably longer. Still its a very important building that needs to be maintained.
Notice how nice and white it looks in the fixed up parts? Judging by the rear of the building you can easily see how its weathered a bit over the decades.
Once again, great pics!
SinCity February 2nd, 2005, 04:49 AM Bubach, I was wondering if you did any pictures of the Cathedrals impressive main entrance?
bubach_hlubach February 2nd, 2005, 06:41 AM I found one kind of, but the entrance is covered with the scaffolding and really hard to see :( , but seems to be ready to get its deserved shine back :)

MIMICA February 2nd, 2005, 07:39 AM wonderful, i can't wait untill they finish it up and we see what it looks like when it is completed...
SinCity February 2nd, 2005, 07:46 AM Bubach, whats this photo?
Is this part of the old fortress walls that used to be around Kaptol?
http://img113.exs.cx/img113/6152/dscf11468he.jpg
intervention February 2nd, 2005, 07:52 AM Wow, that's beautiful!
AstroBoy February 2nd, 2005, 09:25 AM Wow, that's beautiful!
Intervention, you should also take a look at Bubach's other thread about Zagrebs upper town. Its just as fascinating. :)

Great photos Bubach. :)
bubach_hlubach February 2nd, 2005, 09:46 AM Yes SinCity, that is the Kaptol wall and it's still there - in a pretty good shape. It goes all the way around the cathedral and has 6 towers. This particular tower on the picture is called Bakacheva Kula (Bakach's tower).
Anyway, i just came across some interesting material i have never seen before, pics of old and new cathedral from past centuries...
This is the old cathedral before it was hit by an earthquake - before 1880.

This image shows how this new cathedral is being built (looks like this pic was taken today, doesnt it? lol ;) :) )
http://img8.exs.cx/img8/4803/katedrala37im.jpg
And this last image shows one part of the Kaptol wall and a tower (in front of the cathedral) that had been unfortunately demolished in early 1920's, would be really interesting to know why :(
http://img8.exs.cx/img8/8896/katedrala2020prvostolna20crkva.jpg
bubach_hlubach February 2nd, 2005, 09:51 AM Thanks Astroboy :)
AstroBoy February 2nd, 2005, 11:24 AM Those old photos of Zagreb are great. I can see that the front of the Catherdral is what has changed significantly due to the 1880 earthquake. The rear of it looks the same.
The Catherdrals steeple is completely different to what I had imagined it to be.
You should do a thread on old Zagreb if you have access to anymore such photos. :)
long foot February 2nd, 2005, 11:30 AM Great pics Bubach, again!
Sincity, yes, this is part of the old fortress walls around Kaptol
http://img113.exs.cx/img113/6152/dscf11468he.jpg
long foot February 2nd, 2005, 11:55 AM Upper town and Kaptol are realy best part of Zagreb. BTW, many old buildings on Kaptol were reconstructed recentley, like this one:
http://img113.exs.cx/img113/1213/dscf11309mf.jpg
Pity you didn't take any pic of modern interpolations in this area, like new house for retired priests.
AstroBoy February 2nd, 2005, 12:06 PM I agree with you too on that Long Foot. The really old parts of Zagreb are the most charming.
bubach_hlubach February 2nd, 2005, 09:01 PM This is by east entrance of Kaptol shopping centre :
http://img101.exs.cx/img101/1934/dscf19667bl.jpg
Here i had a perfect exposition of upper town, but had to do it quickly so it came out kinda crappy, cuz was told by security guy not to sneak around with my camera, ahh, that sucked lol.

long foot February 3rd, 2005, 12:45 PM ^^^I had same problem when I was taking photos of Eurotower construction site. Those guys take their security servise to seriously :D
nukey February 3rd, 2005, 01:43 PM Zagreb looks so picture-postcard perfect. How many people live there?
long foot February 3rd, 2005, 01:45 PM Zagreb looks so picture-postcard perfect. How many people live there?
~1.000.000
AstroBoy February 3rd, 2005, 01:52 PM It was 1.1 Million in the greater Zagreb area. But last year there was an additional 80,000 new residents. It probably is around 1.2 million now. But we'll have to wait for next census.
nukey February 3rd, 2005, 02:03 PM wow, thats some seriously rapid growth! Where are they coming from?
bubach_hlubach February 3rd, 2005, 10:26 PM For me it is hard to believe that 80.000 people moved to Zagreb last year. I think that big part of that number goes to daily migrations (work, school, etc) from near towns and areas around the city. Zagreb has retalitively low rate of unnemployment (9 percent) comparing to some other less developed areas of Croatia, and incomes are higher (around 700 euro), while average Croatian is around 600 euro.
Arpels February 3rd, 2005, 10:37 PM wawwwwwwwwwww :eek2: fantastic churche, nice pics too!!

Thats what some of read in the newspapers. I think Long Foot first mentioned it and I saw something similar. There has been a lot of construction of new apartments.
bubach_hlubach February 4th, 2005, 03:35 AM Now since this page isn't 'loaded' with any pictures, i would like to post an image of Zagreb cathedral the way it was taken in its original resolution ;) :)

SinCity February 4th, 2005, 04:17 AM Such an awesome structure. Its so noticeable from a distance, all 105m high.
I like this rebuilt version of the cathedral, rather than the pre-1880 earthquake one which too seemed unusual.
Well done BH.
long foot February 4th, 2005, 10:58 AM I found few great pics of Zagreb down town, (view from Westin hotel). You can also see where cathedral is located in comparison to the other objects in center of city like Mimara, HNK, University, St. Mark's church…

Well, I personally would love to see that building demolished ASAP cuz it's like a finger in the eye, but some people dont share my idea on that. I really wonder when that thing will be listed on UNESCO's list :D... Sorry, cant help it, i just hate it with passion. :D
bubach_hlubach February 4th, 2005, 11:34 PM And just two more images of the cathedral in high resolution :)

:)
AstroBoy February 6th, 2005, 01:36 AM Yes, that building shown is a 17 level office tower built in 1956 and is listed as an item of heritage. It sits over looking Zagrebs main square but many argue it should be pulled down. Anyway its getting a face lift.
The last picture show the effect of polution and that why the cathedral is being restored. It will look great once it is all finished. :)
Phobos February 6th, 2005, 02:46 AM The cathedral is quite interesting.
@Bubach Hlubach-These 2 pics are amazing.I would like to see a picture of this kind showing the main facade.Couls you please post if you have some?

This is also one of my favourite buildings in Zagreb – for demolishing. There is actualy a long list of ugly buildings in Zagreb, but pity this one is in very center of the city :(
Singidunum February 7th, 2005, 02:25 PM heh neboder will be cool when restauration is done. I would love to go up on its top floor restaurant. you should see what is located on main square of belgrade :puke: Luckily we managed to make it go down (one of them ;) )

SinCity February 17th, 2005, 01:44 AM Long Foot, these are great pictures. Zagreb to me actually comes up nice in the cold and gloomy weather. In fact I really like it because those old Habsburg buildings really look spooky ..... :runaway:

Kubster February 17th, 2005, 03:31 AM Great pictures. Zagreb's center looks very dense and clean. Don't know why, but when I think Zagreb I think about architecture like this:

I'm talking about the building on the left - color and architecturewise.

I do have some photos of Down Town, but not enough to create great thread. I think we should wait for the spring and take some great sunny photos of Down Town.
SinCity February 18th, 2005, 12:53 AM Why spooky? Palace of Croatian post is one of the most beautiful buildings in Down Town?
Dont get me wrong. I thing its a beautiful and grand building (if only they never took off the original mansard roof :( ). Because of the weather, the building looks like its haunted with a hundred ghosts, thats what I ment by spooky. :)
bubach_hlubach February 18th, 2005, 10:16 PM :) I dont know, guys, but i did hear that the attic of that bulding wasnt completely explored yet...and sometimes strange sort of light is coming out the roof on the right side even when the bulding is empty...:runaway:

bubach_hlubach February 19th, 2005, 10:02 PM Bubach, what is reputably Zagreb's most haunted building? :D :runaway:
I can't say for sure which one, but i know there are some old buildings on upper town that are supposebly haunted, maybe it's got something to do with underground tunnels up there built in medieval times and mystical hystory of upper town :) ;)
Besides that, my house in Zagreb looks pretty spooky too, it is right across the railway station, old german style building over hundred years old, although in a pretty good shape and has a bunch of flowers hanging down the windows......it scares passengers ;) :D

Bahraini Spirit February 19th, 2005, 10:11 PM It's actually better than what I expected, seems to me like it's goin through a renovation boom from the last time I actually saw pics of this place.

Well, I feel like home in this kvart too - I study on Croatian Studies in Vukovarska (Open univeresity), across Eurotower construction site. I use to walk by those old houses when catching bus to Novi Zagreb. You know what i miss in this area - there is not any good cafe bar :D Or maybe just I didn't find any.

I think a few bars and cafes are planned in the new buildings. Office workers like the cappucinos before work. :D

Ohh there is one cute caffe bar next to my building, i just dont think it is on your way to the university. It's called ZUG (CUG), it's got one of most interesting interiors i've ever seen, and makes you feel like you are in an old train, seriously! :D :)

bubach_hlubach February 22nd, 2005, 10:32 AM I can give you the address, but once you walked in, there is no way the hairy waitresses are gonna let ya go just like that, unless they are too busy fighting with guests over 2 kunas, that is how much a big cup of cappuccino costs :D ;)

Avarage price for cappuccino in ZG is 7 or 8 kunas (about 1 €). It is not much cheaper than in Australia, considering your and my salary ;)
Wicky February 23rd, 2005, 12:57 PM Nice pictures. I was in Zagreb for the first time as a kid and it was a cute city. Fine to see the further embellishing of the historical centre.

It's been embellished a whole lot more since we gained our independence in 1991 comparing to the period of ex-Yugoslavia (1945-1991). In that peroid the city was atrociously neglected, the only possitive thing ever happened to it was Universiade in 1987 when a number of sport facilities were built and rebuilt as well as Cibona tower was built, and that was it...
Here are some images of what Zagreb looked like in 1988-1989 :

Wicky February 23rd, 2005, 10:06 PM Well, the second picture is not that bad. And, honestly, the main reconstruction of many cities and towns began here in Slovakia at the beginning of the 90ies, although some work has been performed even at the end of 80ies.
Although I can´t blame many city and towns authorities for the not finishing the reconstruction as well as starting and finishing a new one.
It is fine to see many activities in Zagreb. Cibona looks cool. Also it is fine to read the construction news from Zagreb.

SinCity February 24th, 2005, 02:43 AM True in what Bubach says. Zagreb was neglected somewhat during Yugoslavia. Zagreb's full charm is now beggining to show and thats one of the reasons more tourists are now visiting it now. Last year there was something close to a million visitors.

SinCity March 18th, 2005, 04:18 AM A fine collection of photos you have made Long Foot! :)
There's some things I noticed .....
The National Bank and the Ministry of Sports & Education buildings almost look identical except for colour.
You took some very fine pics of the State Archives building from the side angle, normally this building is photographed face on, but I think it looks heaps better the way you photo graphed it. :)
BTW the Privredna Banka Zagreb is one of my favourite buildings in Zagreb. :)
Also, what is this building? I cant remember seeing it in the city centre. How many levels? .....

Thanks :bowtie:
That building belongs to cultural institution "Napredak". It was confiscated by comunists in 1945, but Croatian government gave it back to "Napredak" few months ago.
It was build in 20-s or 30-s by architect Stjepan Planić on the corner Gajeva/Bogovićeva. Very nice building, but it has only 8 floors.
long foot March 18th, 2005, 09:04 AM Front sides of National bank and Ministry of education are identical. Both buildings are located on Trg hrvatskih velikana (former Trg burze). I will try to take photo of both buildings together, so you can see that great symmetry.
bubach_hlubach March 18th, 2005, 09:28 PM They both are quite symetric speaking of their shape, although it looks to me like each was built out of different material. I guess we will have to wait to see that until the Ministry of education gets renovated as well :)

The TMK 2100 series is finished and they will never make more.
The latest model is the TMK 2200, the much talked about "CroTram" which hits the streets of Zagreb in several weeks. I cant wait to see it in action.

When I worked at bank in the City of London (my first work out of Uni) I worked 12 hours shifts and often would work 6 days, (although our boss would bring donughts and food to work for all of us and call it fun-day - I called it slavery) I only lasted 3 months before I quit the job, hated it and hated my boss to, thought he was w****r and lazy git....
realised banking is not for me I went to pursue other avenues only to realised everywhere I go everybody ask you to work more than you are paid for, hate this , don't you guys hate this.... lol
