Kizkumu-(Maiden's Beach)

According to legend, pirates shattered the small world of a young girl who lived all alone. When the pirates came ashore, the young girl was terrifed and decided to run for her life. She decided she could not escape by running along the shore. She saw the opposite shore as her chance of escape and wanted to reach it in a hurry. She made a pouch with her skirt and filled it with sand, then headed into the sea, but the sand in her skirt only got her half way to the opposite shore. Since that day, much has changed but still many people walk the red shingle road left behind by the young lady. The other interesting aspect about Orhaniye is the castle situated on a little island in one corner of the bay. This quiet bay is a lovely spot for boats.

Another version of the story

Once upon a time there lived in a village, a beautiful maiden. This young maiden had fallen in love with a handsome young man on the other side of the bay. Unfortunately, her family wished for her to marry the rich landowners son. The night she was to marry this despised person, she made plans to flee. Upon reaching the shore, she began to build a path by gathering sand in her blouse and sprinkling the contents as she walked accross. To her horror, the maiden realizes the sand she gathered was insufficient for her to make it to the other side. She was left stranded in the center of the bay and later found and beat to death by the villagers. From that day on, the villagers often visit the area to pray for rain and forgiveness."

thanks for posting Kuvvaci,Marmaris it the only city i visit in Turkey..very beuatiful..and interesting place although i stayed there for a couple of hours because i took one of those boats that go from Rhodes.We did some good stuff though i tried traditional turkish lukumi and i had a walk in the beautiful road by the sea,i went to the bazaar etc..i also noticed a construction boom a bit outside of Marmaris..:cheers:

Yes it is the town that feels like the largest along the coast between Izmir and Antalya. Kuşadası, Bodrum and Fethiye each have a bit more population than Marmaris, but they look like agglomerations of several holiday villages, whereas Marmaris has developed like a city. I guess the reason for that is Marmaris being confined to a limited area among steep hills, therefore the need for planning.

Marmaris also has the largest marina.
