The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was built as a tomb for King Mausolus. It was located in the city of Bodrum (f.k.a. Hlicarnassus). It is located on the Aegean Sea in Turkey. The Persians expanded their land into Mesoptamia, part of India, Syria, Egypt, and Asia Minor. The
empire became so large that King Mausollos of Caria. He moved the capital to Halicarnassus. His wife and sister, Artemisia, thought of the tomb. The Mausoleum was finished around 350BC. King Maussollos had died three years earlier. The Mausolem remained in good condition until an earthquake caused damage. The Knights of St. John of Malta invaded the region and built a massive castle. They used stones from the Mausoleum to fortify the castle. By 1522, almost every block had been taken. The massive castle still stands in Bodrum. The polished stone and marble blocks of the Mausoleum can be seen in the walls of the structure. Only the foundation of the Mausoleum is still at the original site.

The Mausoleum's base was 120 ft. by 100 ft. Overlying the foundation was a stepped podium and the roof. The sides were decorated with statues. The burial chamber and sarcophagus were of white alabaster with gold decoration. A statue of a chariot pulled by four horses sits at the top of the tomb. The height of the tomb was 140 ft.

The Mausoleum's beautiful structure, the decorations, and statues on the outside at different levels on the podium and on the roof make the tomb breathtaking.

There were numerous life-size and larger and smaller free-standing statues of people, lions, horses, and other animals. The statues were carved by Greeks. The carvings represent people and animals not the gods.

The Mausoleum was destroyed by an earthquake eighteen hundred years later. Then the Christian Knights of St. John took the stones

A description of the tomb is necessary to gain a greater understanding of how complicated the construction was. The structure was rectangular in plan with a base that was 120 feet by 100 feet. On top of the foundation was a stepped podium with sides that were decorated with many statues. The burial chamber and sarcophagus was made of white alabaster that was decorated with gold. Some of this design flowed onto the podium that was also surrounded by ionic columns. The colonnade was the next level, and this supported at pyramid roof which was also decorated with lavish statues. At the highest point of the Mausoleum was a statue of a chariot that was being pulled by four horses. This was 140 feet off of the ground. The breakdown different levels are as follows: 60 feet for the stepped podium, 38 feet for the colonnade, 22 feet for the pyramid and 20 feet for the chariot statue.

"The beauty of the Mausoleum is not only in the structure itself, but in the decorations and statues that adorned the outside at different levels on the podium and the roof." There were several different designs that were anywhere from miniature to larger than life. Many of the statues were of people, lions, horses, and other animals. The sculptors that worked on the magnificent decorations were Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas, and Timotheus. The work load was distributed as evenly as possible in that each artist was given the responsibility to work on one side of the rectangular structure and it was up to them to see that it would be complete in time with the other sides. While the appearance and imagery included in the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus resembles something that would have been completed in the ancient Roman Empire, this building was not dedicated to the gods of Ancient Greece. This is one of the most noticeable aspects of this building. For this reason, the Mausoleum holds a special place in history as was very original in design and dedication.

Bodrum is one of the pearls of Agean Region of Turkey.I think it is the most popular holiday resort in Turkey.

One of the best places to go out at night!!Party,nature party,nature party,nature nothing else!!!I miss this place!

Bodrum attracts everybody in summer.I think it is pretty calm in winter.However there is no snow in winter.
