Cesme, under its ancient name of Kysus was founded by the Ionians in the eleventh century. In fourth century B.C CeSme came under the rule of Alexander the Great and then it became a part of the Kingdom of Pergamum. From 190 to 4th century B.C Çeşme region was under control of Romans and in the same century it was taken over by the Byzantines, in the 6th century came the Arabs, then followed the Seljuks, in the 11th century Byzantines came back again. In the fourteenth century, Çeşme was taken from the Byzantines, firstly by the seafarer Emir Çaka Bey and then by one of the local Turkish tribal leaders, Aydınoglu Gazi Umur Bey. Thus, it became a Turkish maritime base. During the fifteenth century the Ottoman Sultan Yıldırım Beyazıd took Çeşme from local Anatolian tribal rule, but it was given to the Aydınogullari by Timur. After a short time Çeşme was again back under control of Ottoman. In Ottoman period, the town was well known as treatment resort and at the same time a trade and maritime base; bearing the tracks of 3000 years old history marked by all the civilizations which have passed through it.
