POMPANO BEACH · The long-awaited condo towers a block from the ocean will be 17 stories high, a developer announced last week. So will the big-name hotel that will sit next door.

WCI Communities Inc., builder of the Heron Bay community in Coral Springs and the Parkland Golf & Country Club, purchased the aging Oceanside Shopping Center at Atlantic Boulevard and State Road A1A for $42.5 million, and the closing was Jan. 21.

Ken Plonski, a WCI spokesman in Bonita Springs, said details are still being worked out, including the amenities the condos will offer, and even which hotel chain will join the project.

But a few details are clear: The hotel will have 285 units, and the residential condos will have about 263 units. Retail shops and restaurants will grace the lower floors. The condos are expected to sell for $700,000 to $2 million, Plonski said.

A sales center to start pitching the units is expected to open this spring and construction -- which could take as long as two years -- is scheduled to begin by the end of this year. Still not decided is the project's name. For now, Plonski said, WCI will keep the working name of "Atlantic Point."

For years, city officials said the east side of town was deteriorating and needed an economic fix to lure tourists and high spenders to the beach. The city gave initial approval to the Atlantic Point project in 1998, but nothing was built. The initial plans called for a 16-story condo project with ocean and Intracoastal Waterway views, as well as a supermarket and restaurants. Phase 2 was to include a hotel, expected to peak at 18 or 19 stories.

In October, when WCI officials announced their plans, they pledged to keep the concept of luxury condos and retail, and would not build higher than what was already approved.

"WCI is the leading builder of tower residences in the United States, and we've established our reputation serving the very luxury-oriented buyers," Plonski said. "The hotel and condo we're bringing to this site will be the finest facilities that have been brought to the coast in that location yet. It's going to be a very nice, luxurious product."

"It's very exciting," Mayor John Rayson said. "Everyone has waited so long for that to happen. Things are moving and it's very encouraging. We've wanted something to happen on the beach for so long and now it's finally happening."
