Looks nice. I like it better in the day. At night it looks like a bunch of boxes lit up w/ an observation tower.
At day you can see the detail and really see how nice it looks.
I give it a 6.

Heres what I said in the other thread:
"Calgary's skyline is definantly one of the greats in the Western Hemisphere!! For a city of 1,000,000 its skyline looks like it houses a city of a much larger size!!! 9.5/10!"

impressive size and density for a city of that population, but the buildings are very bland and boring.

One of my faves.
This skyline is always changing and growing and I'm jealous as hell of this place! The buildings are pretty boring individually though. Would spires help this skyline?
I gotta give it atleast a 9/10

Calgary is a city I've loved forever. I've been there
3 times and the skyline impresses me and sweeps
me off my feet each time I see it. For a city of
1 million, it's the best skyline on Earth. For that
reason, I give it a 10/10.

What a perfect skyline and city.
It is by far my favorite skyline out of any on earth.

I gave it a 9.5/10. All it needs is a slightly off-center 900ft tower with a spire.;)

9 - simply because the skyline is fucken massive for the size of the city :)

I'm going to say it for the 9,000th time.
I F*ING LOVE CALGARY! It has THE BEST skyline on earth. WHY? I don't know... it's just so perfect for it. PERFECT.

February 24th, 2003, 06:57 AM
its beautiful... and it would be considered impressive for a city three times its size. the surrounding neighbourhoods and nature only add to its appeal.
i do agree with those who say that they'd like to see more varied architecture, but it sounds like a couple of the new proposed projects could put that gripe to bed.
bottom line, its a gem... (and i'm glad it's canadian).
i give it an 8.5

This is one of THE best skyline in north america!
I think its unfair to call Calgary "boxy", so what if it has a few of them, ever city does!
Also, I love how there's almost no presence of artdeco or any other old architecture; just clean, smooth and glassy modern buildings.
I don't think Calgary's height is a problem, though the observation tower certainly is, and because of that I'll give it a 9.8.
The Chemist
February 27th, 2003, 09:30 AM
Just remember - the Calgary Tower was built before most of the current skyscrapers in downtown Calgary - at 626 feet it was the tallest building in Calgary from it's construction in 1967-8 until the completion of the PetroCanada Centre West Tower (715 feet) in 1984. It's still the 4th tallest structure in Calgary.
I love the Calgary skyline. It's beautiful to my eyes, and very large for a city of our size. I gave it a 9.5, because it's missing a 900 footer that would make it a 10.:D I think it's one of the top 5 skylines in North America, but that's just my opinion.

Yea, I also think that it's time for Calgary to build something taller than petro canada. But the thing I want the most about the city is underground LRT service is downtown, cuz C-train acts like buses in downtown~ Heard they're working on that, anyone heard about that? Care to give some detail? :)

you have every reason to be proud of your city!
I gave it a 10/10!
Visited Calgary recently for the first time and I really didn't know what to expect. And when we drove down from the airport to city during the evening I saw all those lights and highrises I was like "what the f*ck!"..absolutly fell in love with Calgary.
I stayed at the Ramada downtown, next to the Nexen and Husky Oil buildings...made some great pics there!!
Will be back soon!

*Very* good for a city of just over 1 million, however, I am rating a skyline, not a skyscraper to population ratio. ;)

April 26th, 2003, 10:09 PM
9.5/10. It's the best collection of attractive skyscrapers in North America, in my opinion. It may not harness te behemoths of Houston or Chicago, but sometimes less is more. And then there's always the ever-impressive skyscraper amount to population ration to be in awe about. Lovely. :D

The most attractive skyline IMO. With the mountains in the back, the nice density, and the enormous amount of "twins," it has to be seen in person to truly appreciate the beauty of this skyline. It can easily hold it's own compared to much larger cities, like Detroit. Amazing!

What a fantastic little city...
It gives off a great feel. I voted it a nine out of ten. The population is really quite small and yet this skyline looks amazing compared to a number of cities whose population is more than Calgary; Brisbane for example. I have also considered moving to Canada to live, and Calgary was a serious consideration.
A beautiful city.

I lived in Calgary from 89-94 (right by Lake Sundance). This is a great little city. Downtown is exactly in the middle of the city, so it's pretty convenient to go to downtown no matter where you live in Calgary. The light transit system, or what we call the C-Train, is pretty convenient as well.
The skyline is great, with the Calgary Tower and the Saddledome providing some contrast.
A 9.5 for this lovely city.

What a freakin' awesome skyline for a city its size! One of my favorites in Canada, if not my favorite. Great design contrasts in the buildings and incredible density, plus I love to see all those condo towers downtown. Every downtown should be like that! And there's plenty of new construction so the skyline will only get better with time. 9.5/10

It is an amazing skyline for a city of its size... although most of the buildings aren't really that interesting... rather boxy with bland facades... but it's still a very impressive skyline with great height and density.

Andrew, Your quality is just fine!! :)
You just need to resize your night shot hehehe... :D
Other then that all I can suggest is that you go out one night and experiment.... different f stops... shutter speeds... locations... etc.
Write down your settings so you will beable to tell what settings you were using for each photo.
Develop.
Compare.
Learn.
p.s.
that spot is my favorite view of the downtown and yes I did take those myself!!! :)
What kind of camera are you using?

I agree with other who feel that Calgary has an immense DT skyline (especially so many office towers) considering the region's dimunutive size and isolation.
It can't be a 10, as it doesn't have a focal point, which is a key for me. But it is easily impressive enough to get a 9/10.

I get jealous every time I drive south on highway 2! I often wonder what a Skyline of Calgary would look like with the rivervalley in Edmonton. Perhaps the most beautifull city ever. What you guys need is a 50 000 seat football stadium as close to downtown as possible.
As for those who are surprised that the regions economy can support such a built up financial district. The Calgary-Edmonton corridor is on of the richest in the world. The oil and gas industry built this area, and Alberta's oil reserve compares to those in the middle east.

Calgary looks great - and so many twin towers! It's unusual to see the identical designs of the Bankers Hall (I think that's the name??) towers because they look very much like landmark towers on their own, with quite a high level of detail. I like the smaller residential towers that are popping up around the periphery, as they build up to the taller towers and give a good sense of density! :) 9.5/10

10. That's an outstanding city for 1m - for me, the surprise of the entire skylines list. I simply couldn't understand it until i read the economic explanation somewhere. an example to similar-sized cities in my country, adelaide and perth - both good in their own ways, but a long way to go to catch this. seems to have worked hard and successfully to maximise its advantages at ground level too. Be-jesus, well done

I give it a 9.5... I've watched this thing grow for the last 20 years..... It would be nice if we could elevate our tower but I don't now if its feasible.... the best view in my opinion is from the industrial park area east of Deerfoot Trail, that location is elevated and looking downtown westward the mountains are in the background and make for an absolutely breathtaking view...but the skyline is wonderful to look at from numerous positions and seems to draw your attention by some kind of unseen force....... this native born Calgarian never gets sick of looking at it...

I have never been there, but I would love to go there. I think it LOOKS about as large as Toronto's skyline on some angles you take the Calgary skyline, and depending how many buildings are in the shot, and yet has less than half of TO's population and 1/5 of its metro. Although Calgary is still not nearly as big as Toronto's ENTIRE skyline, but is awesome nevertheless. Just my opinions.
9.5/10. I NEED to take a trip out west sometime. :)

Calgary is nice and dense, however (I know I'm not going to be popular with this), it doesn't impress me. The buildings all look similar, the skyline is very boring, and the colours are extremely dull. It looks pretty ordinary compared to the world and nothing really comes out of these pictures that shouts of uniqueness or originality. Its size is impressive however, as is its density, however that is pretty much all there is. I rate things based on the aesthetic value of a skyline and Calgary simply doesn't do it for me unfortunately.

However right beside the down town is looks very rural and not big city like at all, but that is the north-american style I guess.

For a city of only 1 million (is that 1 million in the metro, or in the city proper, btw?), it has a truely gargantuan skyline.
For the city's size, its the best in the world. (you show me a city of comparable size that has a better skyline and I will eat my hat, which, incidentaly, is lined with a highly toxic lead compound.
9.5 - Bravo! All it needs is a true pinnacle - an 850footer should do the trick nicely, methinks :)

They are still in planning. One was from Sturgess Architecture and some developer from Vancouver, but it was only mentioned in what I think was Calgary's Architecture and Design week (I think the only person on this forum who actually saw a rendering was Josh White). Another proposal was released from EnCana Corporation last month, but they have only said that they want around 2-million square feet in the tower(s) and that they are still looking for a suitable site downtown.
The former I think Sturgess actually said would be around 1000ft. The latter could easily reach 1000ft though, depending on the site, but is still just speculative. I have already e-mailed Gwyn Morgan, the CEO of EnCana, about the tower and have expressed my thoughts on it, but I haven't recieved a message back yet.

Calgary's skyline is so picture perfect. ie it shows best shows a 'skyline' when you just think of the term in general.

Hmm... Gold Coast has a population of only 500 000 and it has a very good skyline for it's size.
Especially with the new Worlds Tallest Residential building completed, the Q1
Auckland is also another small population city with a great skyline

Calgary gets a 10.0 for the size and scale of its skyline, but a (still-impressive) 8.0 for the quality of the skyline. The skyline has some interesting buildings, but it is dominated by the 1970s-1980s boxes. The Calgary Tower provides a unique feature for the skyline (and I'm glad it was there so I could check out the view from its top), but it is UGLY!! So I'll reconcile to a 9.0.

Finally I have a good pic to contribute to this thread.
I took this from the Southwest corner of the city, looking North-Northeast. The line of houses you can see is the end of development, bordering Highway 22X. Where I live is about 3 or 4 kilometers north of it (22X).

Calgary's skyline is one of those undeniably breathtaking ones upon first view. It lacks the monster sized buildings that you'd see in some of the world's monster-sized cities, but overall it has great density, variety, and a generally great look. From what I've heard it's only going to be getting better with some major projects right around the corner.

Calgary’s skyline is set for some big changes. The formers over at ssp have all the latest on what’s going on, or should I say up in Calgary. Here is the link. There is so much going on in Calgary that the skyline you see today will be far different in just 3 short years. it will look much larger and denser than it already is.
Here is a link to ssp Calgary construction thread. Most of what is going on is posted and updated on a regularl basis and is very current. Thanks to all the valuable Calgary formers such as borris and josh white for keeping it up to date as well.

I recently met some people from Calgary and they were kinda backwards hick type people so I had this impression of Calgary being a small little town. But judging by this pic it looks like a great city and these people must be a minority. I give it an 8 mainly due to a lack of neon signing at night. I mean its there but doesn't make much of an impact. The size of it even rivals Meblourne - a city 3 time the population.

Add your photo's of Calgary.
I'd give Calgary a 7.5/10. There is still many years before the skyline will be filling up, but it looks promising with the new EnCana Tower (The Bow) being built by Foster & Partners.

a prime example of a 7.5 rating, mainly in that it has no real talls but good densetitties

Encana's "The Bow" will do so much for Calgary's skyline. Anyways, I give it 9/10.

Here is a pano I made, featuring most of the current proposals. This is the view from the Calgary Tower, around 2011 or so.

your work is amazing. i wonder if there is some way the new photos could be placed at the start of the calgary skyline thread. most of the ones there are years old and dont properly represen the citys current skyline.

1,000,000 people? Best skyline in the world of any city that size. The Norman Foster designed skyscraper approved will really take Calgary to the next level. It will be the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto and an architectural gem.
Calgary has the growth and the money to build what it wants. I'm very optimistic about the direction Calgary might go in. Calgary used to build large functional buildings. Hopefully, the Bow will up the standard to include beautiful and sophisticated.
Way to go Calgary.

I honestly thought Toronto had the only skyline in Canada! :doh:There's quite a few cities in Canada that have amazing skylines. Toronto, montreal, calgary, and Vancouver are the big ones and there's many many others. Probably 20 or so skylines i would consider nice in Canada. But that number is always growing. Like Kelowna, right now its kinda lame but there's tons of highrises going up right now.

shameless insult that is simply hogwash. i have live here and i have lived many other places. calgary has no real racism problem. that is just crapp. this is a rate the skyline thread. not a give the city an unfounded, bad reputation thread.:ohno:
