Is the bulk of Vancouver's high-rises concentrated in one area of the city? What' that area called?

There are high rises all over the downtown peninsula, which itself is divided into a number of different neighbourhoods and districts: CBD, Financial District, West End, Gastown district, Chinatown, Downtown South, Robson, Davie Village/district, Yaletown, SE False Creek/Roundhouse, Coal Harbour, Central Waterfront, Granville, New Japantown/Alberni, Theatre district, Robson Square, Heritage district, International Village district, Stadium district, Downtown Eastside (which includes Little Italy and Old Japantown), English Bay, Denman, and Stanley Park. Financial District has the densest and tallest set of office skyscrapers in the city/metro, located roughly around Burrard and Dunsmuir at it's centre.

Outside of the downtown peninsula area, there are other concentrations of shorter highrises along the midtown Broadway Business District, uptown South Granville, then the suburbs: Burnaby: Metrotown, Brentwood. Surrey: Central/Whalley. Richmond: Centre. North Vancouver: City Centre. West Vancouver: Waterfront, Centre. Coquitlam: Centre. White Rock. others. ....

I've been to Vancouver a couple of times. It truly is a breathtaking city. I love the mix of culture as well, a very cosmo city. However, I don't think the skyline is great. It's dense, I give it that, but it seems like it's towers are clones and quite unattractive at that.. those residential condos are to blame. I still give it a 8/10

Pros:
Unbelievable density
Excellent natural surroundings
The slender apartment towers give it the illusion of being taller than it really is

Cons:
I have studied the statistics and it is really just too short for me to consider a top tier skyline.
It looks like maybe 3 versions of bland glass apartment towers got cloned about 50 times each and make up the brunt of the city
Only 1 tall tower in the whole city (luckily it is the game changer it needed) and 0 over 200 meters

Usually I am overly cruel to stubby skylines, but I think I can swing an 8 for Vancouver. For those of you saying that it's the best skyline in Canada, keep in mind that if you removed Toronto's CN Tower and main part of the business district (ya know, the whole tall part), the rest of the skyline still rivals Vancouver in height and mass. (and is 2 years away from dominating it)

vancouver is more than happy to be canada's 2nd best skyline... that's a non-issue actually, although, because of its layerings, vancouver, may, at times, look denser than toronto...

I would say Toronto skyline is the best in Canada in terms of height and size. But Vancouver is always be my favorite one as it has amazing natural setting such as snow mountains background, surrounded by water, lots of trees and of course i like it's density too. But like i say, they are both great in their own ways :)

That's the last thing I expected to see. It's certainly a welcome break from the sterile glass behind it. Yacht club, maybe?

It wouldn't surprise me if it's a small naval facility. Some of their buildings look just like that: nice heritage building with a gross bunker next to it.

It is exactly that. It is called HMCS Discovery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMCS_Discovery). It is located on Deadman's Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadman's_Island_(Vancouver)).

That's the HMCS Discovery, the Canadian Naval Reserve division and shore facility in Deadman Island inside Burrard Inlet. It is connected to Stanley Park by a causeway.

9/10 It's spectacular especially for a city of it's size. It's #2 in Canada but if they continue building on it could pass up Toronto.

while vancouver is awsome and there is a multitude of apartment towers. i would give the #2 honors to calgary. it has a much taller and more balanced skyline. and the towers look different for one anouther. but all vancouver needs to take that spot is about 4 tall buildings well over 600 feet. vancouver is a solid 8/10. with the addition of a few talls like i said. then it would be a 10.

I'd give number two in Canada honours easily to Vancouver, due to the sheer volume of towers. Plus, the spectacular setting is unequalled. Very, very close to Vancouver I'd put Montreal's, which has wonderful old cathedrals adding variety to the skyline. I find Calgary's amazing for a city its size, but it doesn't stir my imagination.

Vancouver's skyline looks like god himself made it.......................but then changed his mind and took a razor blade and shaved everything at 30 stories.
The setting and density are wonderful but there so many towers between just 25 to 35 stories that it looks almost as much as a wall as it does a skyline.

Agree. They're rapidly running out of space in the downtown core, so it's inevitable that we'll start seeing significantly taller buildings go up in Vancouver. A few 250 m buildings are more likely than not within the next 10 years.

Vancouver is definitely my favorite skyline in the world, it may not have the height or density that some do, but it's buildings are extremely aesthetically pleasing, everything seems to fit in, and the natural setting is wonderful, as a bonus, the climate is fantastic also.

I will definitely need to visit it soon :)

As good as Vancouver is already, I really think this is a city on the cusp of realizing it's urban potential. Vancouver is going to come come into itself over the next 10 years and emerge as one of north America's great cities. Just give it another 10 years and 500,000 people and it will gel into something truly special.

Van's skyline is composed of not only shiny skyscrapers but also beautiful mountains. I gave it a 10/10 for the great view!

Vancouver needs some iconic buildings as a cherry on the pie, other than that it's absolutely beautiful. Location, layout, perfect. 9/10

While I agree with nearly all of what you're saying, Vancouver already has a 201m building and a hyper-dense skyline. Im not sure the city needs 20 in the 200-400m range, I think 5-7 significantly above 200m would be perfect.

Depends on what one's notion of ideal big city looks like. I do like the Shangri-La! :okay:

i think it's absurd to compare the quality of highrises in vancouver and moscow. you may not realise that vancouver has perhaps the best quality highrises/buildings in the world. it was also ranked the most livable city on the planet. :)

I love Vancouver, last time I visited there was perfect weather, so I have an excellent impression of the city. But the buildings are so monotonous, and I kind of dislike that, I'd like to see a little more character in the skyline.

That will never happen at least not with the current view cone restrictions. The tallest building that could be built in Vancouver based on zoning policies is 770ft.

The era of those view cone restrictions is quickly coming to an end. Vancouver will either have to build substantially taller or turn away growth. I doubt they'll opt for the latter, but who knows? Maybe Vancouver will never grow past 3 million, and the growth will all go to other BC cities.

For Vancouver, it's photogenic when you capture the snowcapped mountains with the skyline, but for the skyline alone, it's not as nice. Those condos are horrendous - I agree with the poster that they "look" like commie blocks although they very much well be luxury apartments/condos. Nonetheless, I absolutely love Vancouver. Beautiful city, clean, a little laid-back, easy access to many settings (beach, mountain, etc).

'Commie blocks' to me mean a totally different style of building than a generic Vancouver condo, but anywho... Vancouver doesn't have so much a problem with unpleasant looking buildings (well if they are, then most buildings in the world are ugly) - the condos are just as nice to look at as any average city condo out there. The problem is that they use the same simple designs and rules (i.e., floor to ceiling windows, greenish, or blueish panels) for most of them. And there are a lot of them, which makes for the seemingly indistinguishable buildings. Unfortunately, these are at the forefront of the skyline.

Completely agree! Whenever I'm in New York (half the year) I don't waste my time visiting Times Square, I bike through Brooklyn, even the dangerous parts, I walk to queens, I see places that tourists put off as "not as nice" or "dangerous" when in reality there is a lot to be discovered outside the touristy spots.

Anyway, I love Vancouver, I'd love to live here a couple months if given the opportunity.

I think we can forget about any apology from that guy. I find this to be a refreshing angle in that its devoid of that sea of glass condos one often sees. Vancouver does offer a variety of architectural styles and materials used. The layering in this shot is wonderful.

I was about to make that comment! It's interesting to see that many Canadian cities have very prominent stadiums -Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver- that can easily be seen in their skylines

BC Place looks amazing at night. The colours usually don't stay the same for more than one day. I'd like to see some vegetation, such as ivy, covering the grey outer walls... Before the reno, I think it used to in places.

Awesome skyline and with the snow capped mountains backdrop simply stunning :cheers:

Hmm, skyline is very dense, has an excellent setting, and a nice shape. However the architecture is just "ok" based on my tastes, and the skyline isn't very tall. 7.5/10
