I love the density and the sheer size of it.
But it lacks a major tower to anchor the skyline.
If they could add a quality 600-800 footer somewhere down there, Id give it a 9.5 easy.

Me like.
But I also agree with Calgaryguy. Its missing that "super" skyscraper. Other than that I like.

Pro: density and a very good number of high-rises for its size.
Con: the architecture is pretty bad in many areas, and it needs taller buildings.
Overall:6.5/10

That second pic is hideous, but it shows real density. It is still one of the best this country has. So ->8/10 Keep on pushing those height limits Vancouver!
I still can't believe 1 Wall Centre won skyscraper of the year last year... :?

vancouver is the friggin' textbook example of a city that needs more height in its skyline, the density and scope are very impressive and the natural setting is super-dope, but them buildings are all too stubby. upwards vancouver, reach for the skies.

my rating could greatly improve if vancouver built some tallies.

a supertall would diminish the entire skyline. what makes vancouver's skyline so unique is the uniformity of the height (as well as the sheer number) of tall buildings in the downtown core. it may not break any records, but it's my favorite on the west coast. when you're inside it, you really feel like you're in a big city. moreso than even seattle, sf, or la, imo.

6/10 for the amount of structures - +2 for setting = 8/10
Vancouvers size and density outweighs it's lack of height IMO - The towers seem to go on forever - I agree they need a centerpiece tower though!

Good density and a nice setting, but hideously uninspireing buildings. Just too many balconies for me and all the same common mid rise towers. Someone needs to have a word to your architects.

Vancouver is stunning....remove the mountains and most would mistake it for Manhattan!...but I have to agree with others here...the city needs a new super tall to balance out the skyline and give it some definition...overall an 8.5/10....build some tall buildings!

Hmmm never seen pictures of Vancouver before....
In a strange way it reminds me of Panama City. But I think Panama City is better, there are too many buildings of the same size in Vancouver, soo I'll give it 5.5/10....

Vancouver is one of my favorite cities on Earth due to its
gorgeous, unbeatable setting. The condo towers sure rate a

That's gotta be one of the most impressive skylines in the World. Forget height. With that sort of density and size you don't need any extra height. In fact, "putting in a few 800 footers" would actually stuff it.
The architecture is pretty neat too. Yeah, we all know that condo's don't make the best looking towers but there are just WAY too many buildings here to look at individuals.
It's an absolute forest!!!!!!!!!9.5/10

The density is so amazing. But this world class city just needs some nice landmark towers. Some tall reflective glass buildings would look amazing next to the ocean, with the colours of the sunset reflecting on the glass. Imagine a Bank of China in the skyline...yummy.

Vancouver, like Toronto, has been cursed with a lot of ugly buildings from the 60s and 70s. The newer highrises are gradually diluting them out and it IS improving. But I couldn't help but feel that Vancouver's built up environment didn't do its gorgeous natural surroundings justice. Also, it's time to lift that silly height restriction. A couple of 800 footers would make a world of difference.
7.5 (should be lower but it has great density)

That is true with every city...of course its more wowing in person...and in my opinion Vancouver dosent rank up there because the buildings are way to short compared to many other North American cities, everything looks the same, and those that are different are just giant concrete slabs...the city itself is cool, but the skyline like many other people have said just isnt all that great.
But like i said before the city itself is cool and worth the trip.

I agree. I've lived in Vancouver for more than 20 years, and have visited many other cities. This city has a lot to offer, and these pictures absolutely don't justify it.
For starters, Vancouver is the western gateway to Canada. It has the second largest Chinatown in North America, and has been named world's second most livable city for 3 times in a row. There's a lot to do in Vancouver, and is really multicultural. The architecture is also beautiful.
- two 600 foot buildings will be built in Vancouver
- Vancouver's building code is much much more strict than the national code meaning better quality.
- the city is full of parks, and public arts
- it's the Host City of the 2010 Winter Olympics "the Sea To Sky Games"
- the Coast Mountains give the city a beautiful backdrop
- North America's best airport and world's third best - the airport is like a museum
- best convention centre in the world
This city gives you very high quality, doesn't focus much on quantity.
AND the city has a 600 foot height building restriction. Why? To preserve the backdrop of the mountains. It's the right thing to do, and here's the architecture of the city:
Canada Place - World Trade Centre, cruise ship terminal, theatre, convention centre, hotel
http://www.portvancouver.com/cruise/images/popup_terminallocations.jpg
Science World
http://www.mitacs.math.ca/focs02/local_files/science%20world.jpg
BC Place Stadium (60,000 capacity, main stadium for 2010 Olympics)
http://www.findfamilyfun.com/bcplacestadium1a.jpg
- the cauldron for the 2010 Winter Olympics will be on the roof rim, meaning the largest Olympic cauldron ever
-first indoor winter olympic opening ceremonies
approved Crystal Tower (550 feet)
http://www.building.ca/covon02.jpg
- North America's first automated parking lot
-a new 500,000 square foot convention centre, for $505 million
- the Olympic Village will be built on the other side of False Creek, from the old developed Expo '86 lands.
In fact, I'm not going to show you what we have to offer. I invite you to the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010. We'll see you under the dome on February 12, 2010, and you'll see how much and how beautiful this city is, along with North America's biggest and very beautiful ski resort, Whistler.
When the International Olympic Committe was in Vancouver last March, they commented how beautiful this city was, and how the quality of life was so good.
See you in 2010!

Sorry, but IMO, San Diego is better. Try 1.7 million square feet. If you've been there for Comic-Con, it is simply awesome, plus awesome weather, terrific enviornment.
But Vancouver is tyte, no doubt. The best looking skyline on the west coast. Although Vancouver is not a mega city, the skyline gives a Manhattan-like impression, even though obviously the buildings aren't as tall as NYC. Still, Vancouver gets a 10/10 from me.

Was in Vancouver last summer and it's an awesome place. Seems like there's a new residential highrise going up on every second corner. Was amazed that the tallest building was only 40-something floors. Cause it's in an earthquake zone?? Love the Wall Centre though. 7.5

There are many reasons why Vancouver doesn't have taller buildings. It's not like this 2.5 million city, third largest in Canada, and second largest port in north America can't afford to have much taller buildings...height restrictions because of the mountain views, the zone is expected to suffer from one of the most powerful earthquakes in the history of humanity, etc, etc...
Despite the fact that there are no considerably large buildings, I still think it's skyline is very beautiful and impressive. The density and the background make it one of the most beautiful cities in North America. Too bad it is cursed with concrete blobs from the 60's! Hateful slabs that should be destroyed without giving it a second thought...they should also impale the heads of the 'architects' who 'designed' such aberrant strcutures! :D We keep our hopes up though...a 600 footer has been aproved, and some other 'taller' buildings--for Vancouver standards--are being build pretty soon...hopefully before the Olympics, when we receive the whole world and the city gets the attention it deserves!
Anyway...I'm biased beacause I live here, and love it to death, so I'll go ahead an give it a 10/10! :D

It looks kind of Asia-y. Whoever said Hongcouver was right. But the a third of teh people there are asian (i think mostly from hong kong, pre-1997, when HK was still Brit. many of them came to Canada) This city's chinese character makes it unique to most North American cities. Vaguely, Vancouver resembles Seattle.

If I was to choose between Mountains & taller buildings, I would pick Mountains. Maybe tall doesn't cut it for Vancouver, for I don't want landmark buildings overshadowing the view of the mountains.

It gets 7 for density, 2 for the mountains, 1 for the ocean, and -2 for lack of hight. I think the amount of condo's give Vancouver a diffrent feal than other cities, it takes away the businessy feel. i am not saying I like the condos, just that most cities arent like that. I give it an 8, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Vancouver has an amazing skyline one of the best in north america. It doesnt have the worldest tallest buildings but I think vancouver a city with most buildins around a 150m would look bad with one building 300m. Vancouver is the 3rd most dense city in north america after NYC and Sanfran. And I think its the 3rd or 4th best sky line in north america.

Large, dense and a stunning natural setting. It gets big points for the streetwalls formed by the density, and for the smart zoning, which ensures sunlight still hits most streets, even with the density. So what is it missing? A building over 600ft, a focal point and abundant architectural variety. One of the better skylines in North America IMO, though it is less notable globally speaking.

You really have to visit Vancouver to appreciate it's stunning beauty. I live here, and I absolutely love it. I would live downtown anyday. The mountains are stunningly beautiful, and the green factor is great. I would like to see Granville Street fixed up a bit, and some more revitalization in the East side, but other than that, Great city! 10 for the skyline, gotta love the mountains! The mountains anchor the skyline I say!

glass-condo capital of NA...if not the world. obviously, a very large skyline for the city's size, with nice colors and density and setting. but with no landmark tower, no bldgs over 500 ft, and almost overkill of condos make this a 6.5

The Shangri-La and that Crystal topped development behind the Crowne Plaza will finally give Vancouver a bit of a lift. Can't wait to return and see the completed Shaw building as well. I used to have by lunchbreak by that tower as it was going up but moved before it got topped off. About time something went over the 50 plus mark and sticks out a bit. Still, a great skyline and with the mountains - all the better.

I give it a 6.5 + 1 b/c I live in Canada so 7.5
It is an average looking skyline, with a nice backdrop/surrounding. New residential buildings make up the bulk of the skyline. It is nothing special though....
Whoever said is it is the best in Canada is very :bash: Toronto and Montreal and even Calgary have better skylines than Vancouver
beyond 1000
December 14th, 2004, 08:13 PM
I have lived in Vancouver all my life but I must concur with urbanspy. I would give Vancouver's SKYLINE a rating of no more than 6. It does have nice buildings but the skyline is table top and short. One Wall Center was the first to slightly break the monotony. It will not be until Shangrila gets built that I would increase my rating to a 7.
My brother lives in T.O. and I just came back from there. Toronto has a much more dynamic skyline. I would rate that a 9.5 to 10. Toronto has huge monolithic buildings and of course the showpiece....the Mighty CN Tower. Lots to look at in the skyline. Of course I'm leaving Vancouver's natural beauty out of my rating since we are only commenting on the skyline here.
What Vancouver needs is a signature building around 750 ft that has lots of public access at the top. For example, observatory, restaurant/bar, glass elevators etc. Although such buildings as Jin Mao, and Baiyoke 2 are much taller, this signature building for Vancouver would have similar public access. They slightly missed the boat with Shangrila in that there is no public access at the top of what would clearly be Vancouver's tallest building and perhaps first "skyscraper."
Maybe that is done on purpose because something taller is being planned. Vancouver City Council needs to "GET ON THE BUS."

Very nice city to visit. Spectacular setting and great density downtown. Huge core area for a city this size. However, no architectural marvels. Don't agree that height restrictions are necessary to protect mountain views. Those are big mountains! As tall as Hong Kong's skyline is, you can still appreciate the mountains surrounding them. Even if they want to maintain the limits in Vancouver, they need more distinguishing architecture against the mountain backdrop.

After all I've heard about Vancouver, for me the skyline is very disappointing. I know it's probably a great city at ground level and obviously a really good place to live, but the architecture in parts looks terrible on some of those photos. From a distance the city looks excellent- the sheer number of tall buildings is impressive in itself and the setting is spectacular. However, the designs of some of the buildings close up are very shabby and remind me of the Spanish coastal resort Benidorm, or even worse, Athens in Greece. There is definitely room for improvement. 5/10

My two complaints are as follows:
1. It's not tall enough (very common complaint, of course) with no real defining buildings.
2. There is not enough variety. There are too many blue and green glass-curtain condos. They're everywhere.
Other than those two opinionated complaints, I have to say; it's beautiful. I give it an 8.5. :)

Yea, and the fringe towers (God help us) if they get built. And If something else comes along in the next year or two, might get up in time. If something gets proposed end of this year, construction starts early 2007, ends 2009, then it'll be up by the Olympics. Some tallies will probably come along in time for the Olympics.

At least the city is building for the people and their needs. People in Van want views of the mountains, they want to be downtown and they dont want some crappy Commie Block apartment. They want Condos! Nice views and maybe they dont look so attractive on the outside, they sure do on the inside. Plus, you cant tell me that those "Modern" style buildings in Hong Kong or Tokyo look any better, they look like something from outer space, they're hideos! This is North American Modernism, like it or leave it.

9/10. I don't mind so much that the skyline isn't that tall. The density and sheer number of buildings are both very impressive. The only reason I don't give it a 9.5 is because outside of the central city, the stock of residential buildings suffers from a sort of architectural monoculture. But still a rad skyline indeed!!

I think it's safe to say that while Vancouver doesn't have an overly powerful skyline, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Like any city, you have to be there to really experience it, but I've been to Melbourne, Sydney, Los Angeles, Miami, Kuala Lumpur, and I really believe that the city's beauty tops all of these. In real life, the condos actually add to the skyline, where in pictures it seem like they detract from them. I think if Vancouver had a few 600-700 footers, it would add greatly to the skyline. I say an 8/10 for the actual skyline. One of the magnificent things about the skyline is that you can look at it from so many different angles and you can get vastly different perspectives.

An 800footer is being propsed for the city, but that seems a little overpowering. The living Shangri-la is 642 ft so that will do lots for the skyline.

:eek2: WOW, looks like sim city or something. Vancouver's downtown is big, but then again so is the city, but that is a good view, where did you find that picture from?
The website is printed on the picture --> www.globalairphotos.com
Go to BC--> go to Vancouver --> pick downtown.
Actually, Vancouver's metro is not that big. It's around 2 million, and that's less than the population of Denver.

Nice skyline. As some others said, the skyline needs a couple of key landmarks. It's all very dense, fine, but all the buildings are fairly identical...they should try a diferent style perhaps.

Well, yes and no. Vancouver only has 2.1 million, but given Vancouver's importance in Canada, it's a league ahead of Denver.
One area Vancouver beats Denver is location. .. Mountains to the North and NE, South(around US border), Ocean to the West, fertile green valleys to the East, hard to beat:D

^yeah for sure, its just a all in one type of city. When i was there, i went skiing and hiking which was really peacful, and then afterwards enjoyed the city life, they are so close together. 2.5 mill was everything included from the surrouding areas, which it is. Hey you got any more links to pics like that?

Some Vancouver Statistics:
The City of Vancouver has around 580 000 people, greater Vancouver has close to 2 200 000
Vancouver has over 500 completed high rise buildings, and approximatley 50 under construction right now
only New York City, Chicago, Toronto, and Mexico City beat Vancouver in number of High rises in Norht America, yet Vancouver is one of the smaller Major Cities in North America
http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/?id=100997
Check out this Link it has awesome statistics on every Major City, like number of high rises, pictures of most of those high rises, and tallest buildings etc. it is an incredible website
currently the tallest building is 152 metres, The Shangra-li That was posted earlier in the forum is going to be 196 metres, that will be sweet, yes indeed

2 million people live in the Greater Vancovuer Regional District. (GVRD)
The Greater Toronto Area has 5.5 million people, and including the Golden Horseshoe (Hamilton to Niagara Falls), there's 8 million. Metro Toronto has 2.2-2.5 million people.

2.000.000 is not that much but Vancouver still has a great skyline!
By the way, you guys have to go and vote for my city : Lille (/Rijsel - its flemish name); it's a 1.500.000 metropolis (4.500.000 including the whole metropolitan area), right next to the belgian border, in the Middle of the London-Brussel-Paris triangle... it's a great historic/cultural/economic city that still doesn't have the "fame" it deserves!

In my opinion, Vancouver's architecture is nicer than any other Canadian city. It's glassy, modern, and ritzy. Some of the crap from the 60s is more present in any other Canadian city. Toronto's architecture is very boxy, ugly, and extremely unappealing. Looks like it's made of Lego. Calgary, though nicer than Toronto, still has much to improve on in terms of style. In a way, Vancouver seems like the only Canadian city that's living in the 21st Century.
