The architect is Santiago Calatrava, known for his special, twisting and turning buildings. You can visit the officiall homepage here. (http://www.turningtorso.com/) (For English, press "In English" after the intro)

Dubai-Lover February 6th, 2005, 02:21 PM definitely a great design
but the location seems to be not so good from what i see in photo :dunno:
th0m February 6th, 2005, 02:38 PM Definitely a hot design, but like the others said, there is not a lot of highrise near it, but I do think the location is a nice one, doesn't it sit right by the sea or something?
AtlanticaC5 February 6th, 2005, 03:41 PM ^ Yea, it's located at the sea, and it stands very alone. The area was not too long ago an industrial harbour-area, that now is converted into a residential area. All buildings though, except for Turning Torso, are lowrises at 3-4 floors maximum, many are still under construction. It really needs some company around it, but one good thing is that the area is new so planned highrises there aren't impossible :)
Madhusudhan February 6th, 2005, 04:22 PM This has to be structurally very very strong, because of the excessive wind gusts that are caused by the proximity of the sea. For those who have bought condos in the top floors of this building, it's not exactly going to be sweet dreams during the nights! ;). But then again people buy things in life for vanity too...and there can't be a bigger showoff than owning an apartment in this complex in Sweden!

AtlanticaC5 February 8th, 2005, 10:56 PM ^ It's actually quite hard to find good pics of this tower sadly. Here's a good one though I found, pic by Lars Tufvesson from this page (http://www.bizzbook.com/hamnen/index.html)

Chad February 10th, 2005, 11:41 AM I feel like the building is actually doing the Balley Dancing.
Hoogholland February 10th, 2005, 12:16 PM I think the most beautiful tower in Europe! How much kilomtres is this from downtown Malmo?

D-Rise February 12th, 2005, 11:03 PM I think the most beautiful tower in Europe! How much kilomtres is this from downtown Malmo?
I believe it's less dan a kilometer from the city. The tower is just next to the harbour en that's build against downtown Malmö.
Lucky 24 February 12th, 2005, 11:35 PM Calatrava = pure genius
Phobos February 13th, 2005, 02:16 AM Great modern landmark for Europe!

onetwothree February 20th, 2005, 03:54 PM Very beautiful building, but it really stands out. I saw it the other day and it looks very tall when there's nothing around it.

AltinD February 20th, 2005, 09:00 PM Isn't Discovery Channel had a show on this building on their "Extreme Enginering" series, or it was a different but similar looking tower?
Very nice though, hopefully it will get some company also.
AtlanticaC5 February 20th, 2005, 10:37 PM ^ Yes it was Turning Torso which had it's own Exreme Engineering-show last autumn I think :)
chex February 20th, 2005, 11:48 PM wow!!! what a pic! i love this building!
Sonic from Padova February 20th, 2005, 11:51 PM Wow, It's a fantastic tower, I like it!!!
Jose Luis February 21st, 2005, 04:34 AM LOVE IT, CALATRAVA MY FAV
Ekumenopolis February 21st, 2005, 06:22 AM Beautiful as heaven.. One of my favourite Calatrava´s design. It will put Malmö in the world map (for those who didnt know that pretty city). A 10, of course!
touraccuracy February 26th, 2005, 12:49 AM I just finished watching the "Extreme Engineering" show on it an hour or so ago.
The building looks good but unnecessarily tall. Hopefully some more buildings get built in that area.

spicytimothy February 26th, 2005, 01:26 PM omg... - totally skyscraperistic orgasm
Seb February 27th, 2005, 09:52 AM What a beauty. Heja Sverige!!
Nightsky February 27th, 2005, 02:44 PM I am glad to hear so much positive things about this building, since most people have been negative here in Sweden.
@Atlantica C5. So you are going to Malmö this summer?
Yesterday I took some pictures of TT from Öresundsbron, but there is something wrong with my USB connection so it won't upload any photos.
Nightsky February 27th, 2005, 02:50 PM Fot those who wonder: It is approximately 700 meters form downtown. But it is not nice to walk, since there are boring industrial buildings and empty land between.
AtlanticaC5 February 27th, 2005, 03:29 PM @Nightsky: Yea, I'm going to Skåne with my family in August, so Malmö is something you really have to see then (we won't live in Malmö though, but in a cotton/cabin quite near Ystad).
Sad we can't see your pics from the bridge, stupid USB connection :(
iljetatore February 27th, 2005, 06:46 PM excelent design!!!
but not properly for the area, its look very lonely
TORONTO February 27th, 2005, 07:50 PM This is a great design. I saw this on the discovery channel on how this was built. They was a problem with the steel pipe manufactures since they would now weld in properly. I don't know if they solved the problem. Any way good for sweden.
P.S when you scroll the picture with the mouse up and down the tower actually truns.
TORONTO
Nightsky March 4th, 2005, 10:08 PM Have you seen the picture from Skånemässan in Swedish newspaper Metro? An app. 10m tall flower sculpture of Turning Torso!
@Atlantica C5. I hope the problem with the USB will be solved soon. Noone have managed so far.
Vertigo March 4th, 2005, 10:29 PM One of Europe's finest towers!
AtlanticaC5 March 5th, 2005, 04:14 PM Update
One of the two tower-cranes is now being dismantled (as you can see on the webcam). The other one will probably also be dismantled soon. The facade is almost totally completed now, but there are still interior-work to do.

Bahraini Spirit March 15th, 2005, 02:03 AM This building is coming along nicely, although it's all alone. This will definately stand out for the years to come.
brunob March 15th, 2005, 02:22 AM my favorite euro residential but i've never seen the building plan for the area before.
i always thought there was some willingness to build some more tall building, but future constructions look so leveled.
Is this a definitive overall view of the masterplan or is it likely to change as years pass by?
Skyscrapercitizen March 15th, 2005, 10:57 AM Will become a nice area I think. Some midrises should fit in well though...
Gerard March 15th, 2005, 11:40 AM This is one of the better residentials buidlings ever i guess.
The area surrouding it will have a lot of housing but no highrise what so ever by the looks of it. That will make this buidling even better. You get an nice view from every corner.
Why is the building not on the waterside ? (that would make it even better)
Sonic from Padova March 15th, 2005, 12:26 PM a great project for malmo
CULWULLA March 16th, 2005, 12:20 AM love it. the 170m Baroque tower is similar which was planned for Brisbane never got built. was a shame. it would of been amazing!
http://img40.exs.cx/img40/4626/baroque7ux.jpg
jonovision March 16th, 2005, 03:22 AM ^ I love that tower, it looks really cool. Too bad it never got built.
Nightsky March 16th, 2005, 11:24 AM http://www.malmo.se/see/work/31215/storV-Hamnen-bild2.jpg
It will not be completely lonely. Look at this rendering. It shows the proposed 25-story hotel, almost in the same area. And there are some highrises with 12-15 that is pretty close to Turning Torso. Kronprinsen with 29 floors is not very far either.
AtlanticaC5 March 20th, 2005, 04:10 PM Pic by Lars Tufvesson, taken March 19. Note that only one crane is there now.

Bahraini Spirit March 20th, 2005, 05:08 PM The tower is nearly complete and it looks great.

:)
DD2020 March 20th, 2005, 05:32 PM Is it going to be tallest in Sweden?
Capzilla March 20th, 2005, 06:06 PM @DD2020: it already is.
Gendo March 21st, 2005, 03:03 AM Its too bad there aren't going to be any other highrises clustered around it.
chex March 21st, 2005, 05:31 AM ^ yes, it's bad, but there are some really nice designed highrises there!
cwilson758 March 22nd, 2005, 06:57 PM I saw this building when I was flying into Copenhagen...it sticks out!

james2390 April 13th, 2005, 05:31 AM It's a beautiful tower! It has turned out nicely.
Chad April 13th, 2005, 06:34 AM Twisting to the best...
ericnijmegen April 26th, 2005, 02:07 AM Twisting torso is my favourite in Europe. I have been to the construction site several times. Last time I heard architects saying that there seems to be a serious problem. Because of the shape the wind creates a horrible sound: kind of loud whisteling sounds around the angles of the upper floors. You couldn't possibly have a good night sleep. Have you heard about it?

Wildchild April 28th, 2005, 04:26 AM Wow a beautiful tower, and you know there's comes a price for building a beautiful tower. How much do the condos range?? I would estimate the cheapest being over a million us$.
Kim André April 28th, 2005, 04:45 AM Wow a beautiful tower, and you know there's comes a price for building a beautiful tower. How much do the condos range?? I would estimate the cheapest being over a million us$.
I believe there is a law in Sweden that says you can't combine appartments for sale and appartments for rent in the same building, and there weren't enough interested byers for these appartments, so I think it's decided that there will be for rental only in Turning Torso.
Maybe someone from Sweden can correct me if I'm wrong ;)
Wildchild April 28th, 2005, 04:54 AM ^that would mean the Swedish gvt. funded or pitched in!!
Van der Rohe April 28th, 2005, 11:36 AM great tower!!!
are they planning more towers in the neighbourhood?
AtlanticaC5 April 28th, 2005, 04:03 PM @Wildchild: TT was first about to be condos, but since the interest wasn't big enough it's now rentals. The montly rent for 1½ room on floor 15 (lowest residential floor) is around US$700, and 5 rooms on the highest residential floor (floor 53 iirc) cost around US$3500/month
@Van der Rohe: The only planned highrise right now near TT is a hotel with 19 floors, but it will be located almost a km away. So no, no tall buildings are planned in it's immediate area.
Pas April 29th, 2005, 05:38 AM amazing tower!!

Fashionable Samantha April 30th, 2005, 04:07 AM It looks great, but it looks weird as a stand alone.
Oriolus May 4th, 2005, 02:02 AM Like everyone else I think it looks great but it would definately look better if it was a landmark tower in a decent skyline, rather than a stand alone. It seems wierd that a 190m building would be built among all 3 storey buildings. Can this thing be seen from Denmark? Or it would at least be visible as you drove from Denmark to Sweden right. It almost if if it's put there to say ":bleh: Our buildings taller than yours :bleh:"
istbull May 4th, 2005, 02:18 AM really a magnificent tower but it reminds me a thing i can't tell you in here :-) i think this is because of wrong location, not looks pretty for a small town..

DenverDane May 4th, 2005, 04:33 AM Can this thing be seen from Denmark? Or it would at least be visible as you drove from Denmark to Sweden right.
Yes, it can be seen from Copenhagen.
AcesHigh May 4th, 2005, 04:44 AM i think its awesome engineering-wise, but I dont think its beautiful. Anway, quite a landmark.
deep sea buildings May 7th, 2005, 05:05 PM i love the design. i wished it was taller so the twist carried higher. the twist seems to end too soon! i think this building should have been at least 260m. maybe the twist could have gone a full 360degrees then. it would've looked better for it.
Urban Dave May 7th, 2005, 05:20 PM Amazing!!!! I hope they finisht it soon!
rufi May 7th, 2005, 06:12 PM It's really freaky :D

New York Yankee May 7th, 2005, 07:02 PM it's just 190 metres, it looks much more higher!
Javi May 7th, 2005, 07:04 PM It needs more skyscrapers

Vesle May 13th, 2005, 11:36 PM i love the design. i wished it was taller so the twist carried higher. the twist seems to end too soon! i think this building should have been at least 260m. maybe the twist could have gone a full 360degrees then. it would've looked better for it.
I can't emagine, but yeah it might looki good...? can anybody render that... please!:D
Urban Dave May 14th, 2005, 12:51 AM I think the height is correct. I would prefer higher if it would be built in another place, with another skyscrapers that could make it look not so magic.
Ashok May 14th, 2005, 05:06 AM http://img37.echo.cx/img37/2574/himmelohav6ud.jpg
wow, that building really dominates that sky, and looks so good
solbyair May 14th, 2005, 11:07 PM I can see TT from the roof of my house (I live 25 kilometres from it). Some years ago I could see Kockumskranen (the old Malmoitian "highrise construction", a former shipyard crane that was 150 metres high). New times, new sights.
^that would mean the Swedish gvt. funded or pitched in!!
Nope, our govt. haven´t spent a single penny on it. What happened was that the building proprietor HSB had to devalue the worth of the building so they have to take the loss. Since HSB is a kind of a cooperation (extremly wealthy and mighty though) it´s their members who have paid the price. It now seems though that they´re going to finance it by selling off some of their most valuable estates so they probably won´t be much affected at all.
But anyways, I am glad they built it of course and I am not economicaly affected from it so I just thrive :)

SUNNI May 16th, 2005, 08:18 AM Its beautiful...;)
Urban Dave May 16th, 2005, 10:36 AM This last picture is amazing! I hope soon they will remove the crane to admire the tower in its all beauty!
3tmk May 16th, 2005, 08:21 PM I don't really like how it stands really alone as if out of nowhere, but I do have to say, it's Turning Gooood!
I wonder how cool would it look at night, all lit up!

Capzilla June 10th, 2005, 01:11 PM Did the shops nearby open yet? Last time I was there everything was closed, probably still waiting for completion and more residents in the area.
Hviid June 10th, 2005, 02:42 PM TT is the greatest thing to happen to Sweden since...ever..:D
It really looks awesome!
Urban Dave June 10th, 2005, 05:12 PM Looks like htere is no ilumination at night :(
Cloud June 11th, 2005, 01:17 PM The building really looks great.
But I think it doesn't fit in the surrounding area.
lofgren June 11th, 2005, 01:31 PM Edit
Parzival June 11th, 2005, 04:44 PM Meaning you want the beauty of TT to be lost amongst hundreds of grey skyscrapers like in Tokyo or New York?
No, but with like 5-7 more scrapers.
endeve June 11th, 2005, 04:57 PM I was quite sceptical about this tower, but since I saw it in person few months ago, it really impressed me. Just amazing!
New York Yankee June 11th, 2005, 05:12 PM i like to see only houses of 2 or 3 floors tall and than is there in the middle of it a very tall tower of 190 metres.
but when is it supposed to finish?
JADI June 11th, 2005, 05:20 PM Its a spectacular building :) ...From some angels it reminds me of a windsail...
I heard from a friend of mine that another skyscraper was being built in the outskirt of Malmoe ..I think the name of it was "the scandinavian tower" and it was much taller than TT.Anyone know what the present status of that building is ???
DenverDane June 11th, 2005, 05:22 PM ^ Unfortunately, the Scandinavian Tower project has been canceled... I think it was because of lack of funding...
chex June 11th, 2005, 07:57 PM wow Sixtiz!!! those are amazing shots!!!
i love those new apartment buildings too!!!
AtlanticaC5 June 11th, 2005, 10:04 PM @New York Yankee: People will start moving into the Turning Torso in November this year. The crane will be removed sometime in June.
Sixtiz June 13th, 2005, 10:33 PM I put a couple more pictures I took this evening here : http://sixtiz.net/photos/turning-torso-3/
A quick preview :
http://sixtiz.net/photos/turning-torso-3/img006.jpeg.medium.jpeg (http://sixtiz.net/photos/turning-torso-3/img006.jpeg.html)
I have to go by night to get some nice pictures too...
AtlanticaC5 June 19th, 2005, 12:17 PM Update
The facade is completed, and the crane will be dismantled next week. The construction-elevator (on the outside of the building) is already on its way down (maybe it's even all gone now?). The two top floors of the building will be conference-rooms, called Torso Meeting. They will be open for conferences in February 2006.
AltinD June 19th, 2005, 07:12 PM When did the costruction started? I mean when they boarded up the aerea, raised the signboard and started digging the hole for the basements?
AtlanticaC5 June 19th, 2005, 07:31 PM @AltinD: The construction/digging officially started on February 14, 2001. The construction of the concrete-foundation started in March 2002 and was completed in August 2002. After that it started to rise above ground (I think :))
AltinD June 19th, 2005, 07:34 PM Thanks.
Dennis June 20th, 2005, 12:15 AM very nice, wow !

Those external truss things look great but how'd you be if your window looks straight into one of them.
I think Turning Torso will be remembered in the future as one of the great skyscraper designs of this time. I reckon we'll see a lot more buildings with twists in the future - I've already seen a few proposals. Sensational!!!
AtlanticaC5 June 24th, 2005, 03:42 PM ^ I've been thinking of that too, I wouldn't want to have one in front of my living-room window :D
staff June 24th, 2005, 04:01 PM Actually there is one highrise hotell planned not far from TT, and another highrise is going to be built in the Dockan area which is near TT aswell. And as Nightsky wrote, Kronprinsen is not far from this area. Malmö's waterfront skyline is going to be different in a couple of years. Very cool.
Phobos June 24th, 2005, 11:38 PM Thank you so much for the photos.
Tall Rog June 25th, 2005, 09:15 AM Stunning photos... stunning buildng...
... as soon as the crane comes down then I'll be looking for a decent photo for my desk top...
This has got to be my European Number 1 at the moment.
rayman June 25th, 2005, 09:22 AM very cool building. It would fit more in Stockholm though. It is very ugly to see one tall stick among the woods.
lofgren June 25th, 2005, 01:57 PM Edit
Urban Dave June 25th, 2005, 04:46 PM Remove the crane now! It's about time!
Phobos June 25th, 2005, 09:24 PM very cool building. It would fit more in Stockholm though. It is very ugly to see one tall stick among the woods.
I actually like the building standing alone. It looks more monumental and unique without a neighbor overshadowing it.
rayman June 25th, 2005, 09:37 PM I actually like the building standing alone. It looks more monumental and unique without a neighbor overshadowing it.
sure but it looks very lame and very very naked
lofgren June 25th, 2005, 09:50 PM ...
Urban Dave June 25th, 2005, 09:56 PM Naked? mmmmm... a sexy torso!
Phobos June 25th, 2005, 10:10 PM sure but it looks very lame and very very naked
Well,Eiffel Tower looks naked too and I guess nobody wants to build a cluster of towers around it.
Klugermann June 25th, 2005, 10:24 PM wow! is a very beautiful building.
¿What is the highest building in Sweden?
AtlanticaC5 June 25th, 2005, 11:12 PM @Klugermann: Turning Torso is ;) our second tallest though is Kista Science Tower (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=100188) in Stockholm, 128 m.
lofgren June 25th, 2005, 11:30 PM ...
Phobos June 25th, 2005, 11:38 PM ^Ok...let's do it.That is a good solution!
JADI June 25th, 2005, 11:44 PM I would like to see the picture of the interior? Any pictures of it yet?
Victhor June 26th, 2005, 12:12 AM I love it!!!, And I like it standing alone. It's the best european tower to me.

Skyscrapercitizen June 26th, 2005, 05:45 AM This building is at least a reason to stop for passing tourists, and for some maybe even a reason to change their route just to see it. :)
staff June 26th, 2005, 10:56 AM rayman,
Malmö is the only city in Sweden which has the "guts" to build a tower like this. It is and will always be one of the most innovative and unique skyscrapers in Europe. I'm so proud of it. Maybe the tower helps the skyscraper-construction to boom in Sweden, and then maybe Stockholm can get a nice building too. ;)
Scotty June 26th, 2005, 02:55 PM I guess rayman is right. Why not build a big cluster of 120m screw-towers around it. Lets say 7 towers in a ring ;)
rayman June 26th, 2005, 04:42 PM rayman,

yeah its nice that malmö got the guts compare to my hometown (Stockholm) which are afriad to build high buildings and makes Stockholm looks like a nice little town with church towers instead of a modern city.
I hope so too that Sthlm will get more tall buildings but now it doesnt look bright. Anyway I still think it looks silly and ugly to have only 1 tall tower among a bunch of 2 storey apartments. If they build at least 4-5 tall towers around then we are talking.
staff June 26th, 2005, 04:52 PM As lofgren wrote, I think this building is more of a sculpture/art than regular scrapers, and comparable to the Eiffel Tower etc. And who thinks that a cluster of scrapers should be built around the Eiffel Tower?
For your information, there is one highrise hotell and another skyscraper planned in Västra Hamnen, and Kronprinsen (80 m) isn't far from TT either.
rayman June 26th, 2005, 04:57 PM turning torso and the eiffel tower is a totally different matter.
Turning Torso is a highrise apartment. Eiffel tower is a tourist attraction.
staff June 26th, 2005, 10:38 PM They have a different areas of usage, but they are both still innovative and fantastic structures of their time, and shouldn't be blocked etc. by other towers.
Javi June 26th, 2005, 10:45 PM I love Turning Torso :)
Phobos June 26th, 2005, 11:37 PM turning torso and the eiffel tower is a totally different matter.
Turning Torso is a highrise apartment. Eiffel tower is a tourist attraction.
I know that, but I meant that both structures are unique and monuments to their cities respectively. That's why I think other towers shouldn't de allowed close to TT because that would ruin its the majesty.Anyway, whether they build or not other towers,TT will always be a landmark for Sweden and Europe, but it won't have the same impact as it would have without neighbors.
Parzival June 26th, 2005, 11:49 PM Scince Malmö is such a small city the population of Malmö should be able to affect the city concil to build more highrises around it?
staff June 27th, 2005, 12:18 AM Parzival,
The population of Malmö couldn't do more than the Stockholm population could do in a matter like this. I wouldn't say no to build some scrapers near TT (which are actually going to be built + we already have Kronprinsen pretty close aswell), but I definately don't want to see other buildings blocking the Turning Torso.

but there is plenty of space there.
staff June 27th, 2005, 01:28 PM Parzival,
You're right, there is actually a lot of empty land in Västra Hamnen. The problem is that nearly 100% of these grounds have been occupied for planned buildings already.
Nightsky June 28th, 2005, 02:20 AM But have you seen the huge area on the backside of Turning Torso behind the industrial area close to the sea behind a fence? It is hard to reach from the city. Nothing is u/c there.
staff June 28th, 2005, 12:53 PM Nightsky,
Nothing planned there either?
Per June 28th, 2005, 09:35 PM Beautiful design but typically for a solitairy tower. It's a landmark which cannot share its space with other towers.
staff July 10th, 2005, 08:35 PM All cranes have now been taken down from Turning Torso, and thereby the tower is completely finished on the outside.
Phobos July 10th, 2005, 10:09 PM Take some pictures for us staff :)
staff July 10th, 2005, 10:43 PM Coming up. :)
Effer July 10th, 2005, 10:59 PM Nice pics!

The Boy David July 17th, 2005, 10:04 PM Awesome tower.
Piss-awful location.
Why the hell is a work of art like this in the middle of nowhere?
malec July 17th, 2005, 10:13 PM Wow what a great pic. Reminds me of Batman or something
staff July 17th, 2005, 10:36 PM The_Boy_David,
Even if it looks like it, it is not in the middle of nowhere. The tower is meant to be as much art as it is a residential building - I guess they don't want other towers blocking it. Same thing for the Eiffel Tower for example.
Victhor July 17th, 2005, 11:58 PM Wow, that b&w seems to be taken from the most amazing point of view of the tower
BTW: see my avatar, I love it!

deep sea buildings August 16th, 2005, 02:45 PM what is the purpose of the big white cylinder on the roof? is it the bit that houses the elevator mechanics? it'd be cool if they lit that part at night.
staff August 16th, 2005, 06:15 PM deep_sea_buildings,
Yes. The cylinder goes from the bottom all the way towards the top of the building. It will (and probalby is right now) be visible in the gaps between the cubes. Before it looked a little strange with cylinder on the top, but now it makes sense since it is visible through all of the building. I hope it is gonna be lit up.

Chad August 27th, 2005, 02:31 AM Malmo is a nice location IMO.
I think it's height and the mass-form is not very dominant (complication is out of the question) yet it's whiteness might blends it so well in the skyline and can be easily dissappeared in some dense city like New York or Hongkong.

The reason for its location is to attract fashionistas to Malmo .. and hopefully, will attract other companies and build skyscrapers to make a skyline :) so for them, TT sorta like a gateway to job oppurtunities :)
