Sydney is still King of the skyscrapers. It will reach 800 completed this year and thats not counting North Sydney's 100 and surrounding metro area.. Melbourne has just over half that at 432 completed and that includes Metro with only 300 in CBD.
Other Australian city;s are quite small in comparison with the amount of skyscrapers which range from 100- 300 completed.

Both of these beautiful skyscrapers will also probably be there city's tallest skyscraper for a very long time. Both well over 300m. These dont come along all the time in Australia.Very unique time .its funny how some people think when they get a 300m skyscraper and they will now get dozens.
this it guys. lap it up. For next decade atleast most will be lucky to break 200m barrier, which is still something to be proud of.

The thing I notice about Eureka and Q1 is that they've set new benchmarks and opened up new possibilities when it comes to scale in Australia.

Nothing has been seen in Sydney for over 20 years on that front, and even then we got a modest observation / restaurant tower and not a skyscraper.

Personally I notice monster buildings much more than a bunch of little ones, that's just me... :) but these buildings are also their respective cities icons which lends them extra attention.

Eureka and Q1 are huge, especially in their lower density surrounds, which makes the WOW factor even better.

It's amazing to see how Eureka and Q1 completely dominate their skylines already and they're not even finished.

Sydney has never really had a 'big' scraper. Funny how people are suddenly noticing that.

Wow........Eureka looks great.
Sydney has the best situation and most noticeable landmarks ......Opera House and Harbour Bridge but Melbourne has definatly the most striking skyscrapers.

I'd love to go to both but alas I have never been to Australia. I think Sydney would be nice but from almost anyone I have ever talked to they all prefer Melbourne by a long shot. I've always been told that Sydney is nice to look at but, like Vancouver, the city doesn't have much to offer. Everyone seems to rave about Melbourne's shopping, restaurants, architecture, and sophistication. Almost everyone I've met seems to say that Melbourne is the true gem of Australia's cities.

The prob is that Melb was once the top dog in OZ because of the gold rush way back say 100 yrs ago. Ever since Sydney has taken over and has now reached such heights that it is now a global city that doesnt compete with OZ but in the world. *Some* (and i do mean some) still have hostility of that fact... dont really understand why tho, we are all aussie's????

Ok back on topic.. we are lucky to get two such great buildings. Each is different and beautiful in different ways. I think Eureka will be australia's tallest for a long time! (although i think they should design a better spire)

that is very true though about the gold rush and such, its what pushed melbourne to where is is, look at some of the old style buildings we have, very, very rich because of the gold that was coming in, melbourne/victoria even had australias largest population, thehn sydney took over, I think from memory I read because a lot of the europeans in that day liked sydneys appeal and being australias first settlement (yep, by a bunch of crooks/convicts, melbourbe by free settlers;-) ) a lot of migrants chose sydney over other cities because of this, so the population soon tok over melbournes, now this is all changing again I guess.

All the my OS freinds that have visited both cities also prefer Melbourne just as ssigyt2 said.
I know its hard for some of you from Sydney to get a handle on this but its true!
BTW whats a "global city"?? Please explain.

zulu69
March 1st, 2005, 09:12 AM
^ok 'global city' (i thought it was quite self explanatory) is a city that is well integrated into the global economy, is able to have some imaginary prestige, recognised around the world by pictures, etc. That may be a simple explaination, but i can't be bothered 'humoring' you. I think you know exactly what i meant.
Heres a link here (http://www.lboro.ac.uk/gawc/citylist.html) to better inform you.

And to get the record straight i like Melb too. I like Madrid much more than Melb or Sydney. Its all based on ppl's taste's. Many of my friends from oversea's liked Sydney. If you think Sydney is the devil, fine, if its the worst city on earth, ok, it's utter crap, thats your taste.
I was merely answering why there is so much hatred from melb ppl towards Sydney thats all. Obviously you fall into the *some* category that i mentioned. If you even bothered to growup and read my post as Lightning~Bolt did, you would realise that i was providing HISTORIC fact. So live with it ok?

:bash: Eureka is the greatest name. Have you ever heard of Archimedes??

Archimedes (ärkĭmē´dēz) , 287—212 , Greek mathematician, physicist, and inventor. He is famous for his work in geometry (on the circle, sphere, cylinder, and parabola), physics, mechanics, and hydrostatics. He lived most of his life in his native Syracuse, where he was on intimate terms with the royal family. Few facts of his life are known, but tradition has made at least two stories famous. In one story, he was asked by Hiero II to determine whether a crown was pure gold or was alloyed with silver. Archimedes was perplexed, until one day, observing the overflow of water in his bath, he suddenly realized that since gold is more dense (i.e., has more weight per volume) than silver, a given weight of gold represents a smaller volume than an equal weight of silver and that a given weight of gold would therefore displace less water than an equal weight of silver. Delighted at his discovery, he ran home without his clothes, shouting "Eureka," which means "I have found it." He found that Hiero's crown displaced more water than an equal weight of gold, thus showing that the crown had been alloyed with silver (or another metal less dense than gold). In the other story he is said to have told Hiero, in illustration of the principle of the lever, "Give me a place to stand, and I will move the world." He invented machines of war (Second Punic War) so ingenious that the besieging armies of Marcus Claudius Marcellus were held off from Syracuse for three years. When the city was taken, the general gave orders to spare the scientist, but Archimedes was killed. Nine of Archimedes' treatises, which demonstrate his discoveries in mathematics and in floating bodies, are extant. They are On the Sphere and Cylinder, On the Measurement of the Circle, On the Equilibrium of Planes, On Conoids and Spheroids, On Spirals, On the Quadrature of the Parabola, Arenarius [or sand-reckoner], On Floating Bodies, and On the Method of Mechanical Theorems. Archimedes' many contributions to mathematics and mechanics include calculating the value of π, devising a mathematical exponential system to express extremely large numbers (he said he could numerically represent the grains of sand that would be needed to fill the universe), developing Archimedes' principle, and inventing Archimedes' screw.

I was responding to another post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't bringing sydney to the debate for any reason other than to respond to Grollos height comparison post. I wasn't the one who came into this thread and started sprouting comparitive building heights primarily to show superiority. I thought it was unnecessary.

I have never been blind to other cities achievements - hell I love Eureka more than any building in Australia - I think Melbourne's buildings are of a quality and general style that shit all over Sydney's - yes it's true I think the cladding on Q1 is horrid but in all honesty why would anyone think I was blind to the achievments of other Australian cities - I would have thought it the opposite - I am more critical and less forgiving of Sydney. I have never argued that Melbourne is Australias style capital and Sydney Australia's trash capital - I just wish our buildings here were as progressive as those in Melbourne.

Some of you have me completely misread me I think, either that or you really don't have a clue what i'm about at all. To infer I am a self centred Sydneysider who thinks the world doesn't exist beyound Sydney is ridiculous - I dont really even like Sydney that much - it's faults are plentiful and getting worse. I have frequently taken an interest in our other cities and even some of the regional centres. The quality of architecture in Melbourne shows just how revolting our (Sydney's) buildings are.

its true that the general public of cities around the world had heard of sydney but did not know it was in australia, thats the honest truth, but it was mainly arrogant americans who dont care about any other place but thier own, heck its the same with melbourne, it was not really a well known city until probably the last decade or even less, thats just me going on conversations in chat rooms etc. before and after the 2000 olympics.

and FYI the rivarly between sydney and melbourne has always existed and always will, and why not? both cities compete for things all the time, and are the two leading cities in australia.

For example heres a quote from a site:

"A fierce rivalry exists between the cities of Melbourne and Sydney, but local residents bask in the satisfying knowledge that Melbourne beats Sydney hands-down on the cultural front, noted for its wide variety of high standard performing arts, as well as its sport."

http://www.wordtravels.com/Cities/Victoria/Melbourne

so its a well known fact around the world that the rivarly exists, its just whether you chose to enter it or not.

Maybach i bleeped it out for you . Btw i agree with your comment. i think compertion is good between the two it half the reson there growing such big towers but when people start saying negative things about each others cities it is childish (you can say one city is better but dont say one city is crap) always look on the bright side of things.... as for americans the iggnorant ones say what you will.

Not a very descent comment to make about people who are different than you. Are there no ignorant people in your neck of the woods?

I'm Canadian and I don't think we are any better than Americans or Australians. Just different.

Actually Eureka is perfectly named (try Google for an explanation) and the stripes are fine. This is not a great building folks. It's a tall building. Good for Melbourne.. at least you "can build tall".

As for the Mel/Syd rivalry... (admitted outsider) when i the argument comes done to weather you know it's a tie and somebody wants to win.... Melbourne has a wet reputation but the Sydney Olympics were one week away from being rained out... (imagine the tourism impact if the world knew).

Having never been to either city... but learned a bit about both...I think Melbourne kicks Sydney's butt. I don't give a fuck about aerial postcard pictures "cause I'm usually walking on the ground.

Thanks for that Cul - Eureka looks in good company there with the early C20 NY scrapers (Chrysler, 40 Wall, Woolworth, ?Met. Life Tower). :D

What's the one behind 40 Wall Street next to Taipei 101 - looks a bit like the Bank of America building in Atlanta but it's not that...

March 9th, 2005, 01:34 PM
Yep I HATE/LOATH THE MAST- it ruins the building just as the cladding on southern cross station ruins the station, its all kinda mediocre.

sakor1
March 9th, 2005, 02:17 PM
Hmm, passing judgement before completion on both? Personally I think that the Southern Cross Station roof is going to look spectacular... I am undecided on the Eureka mast as of yet, I will see how that looks when done. The more I am seeing it in renders and on Cul's model though I am coming to like it.

Wow! How many metres is high this tower?

DamienK
March 9th, 2005, 06:09 PM
Currently, it's 290 m high, but the mast will reach 351 m when completed.

beyond 1000
March 10th, 2005, 01:10 AM
We do not know how the mast will look. It will be an extention of the original building's height rather than a spire/antenna. This is just a concept design. Let's wait until the designers reveal to the public their final completed rendering. Heck, its almost to the roof. Soon enough we will know how it will look in its competed form. Still 351m is nothing to laugh at. The observatory at the top would be equivalent to 107 floors on this building's floor ratio. Also, it would be 11m higher than the Jin Mao observatory and about the same height as the upper deck of the Oriental Pearl Tower. The new observatory on Eureka would be higher than the roofs of John Hancock Center, Aon Center, and Trump Tower all in Chicago.

Nothing to sneeze at.

They are not just concept plans they are official renderings and plans taken from the planning application file! Of course there may be some alterations by the time it gets approved but for now these are the official plans for the tower:

March 11th, 2005, 12:56 AM
^^ Beyond1000: the top viewing platform of the communications tower appears to be about 15 metres below the pinnacle, so it will be about 335.5 metres (or 20 metres higher than Big John's obs deck).

Thanks Grollo and Phi1ip for some correction.

I didn't know how the top would be. I hope they utilize the same cladding and dress it up a bit to make it look the same as the rest of the building.

At 335.5m that is 1100 ft off the street.

FYI the Aon center in Chicago is 1136 ft to the roof or 346.3m.

Eureka would then become the second tallest building if it were in Chicago after Sears.

Dean
March 13th, 2005, 06:32 AM
^^yeah the 335m mark is the 2nd top level of the mast where the outdoor observation deck will be. The top of the mast will be 351m (1152 ft) but no one ,as yet, is really sure if you will be able to stand on this level. here's hoping though.

Cheers

yea it looks wierd with the core about 150ft above the actual structure.
