These are pictures of Opatija, a well known historic resort town on Croatia’s coast, located just outside the port city of Rijeka.

Most of the Villas and Hotels were built towards the end of the 19th century.

The town of Opatija (Abbazia in Italian) means “The Abbey”. For decades Opatija was the playground of Europe’s royalty and wealthy, especially the Habsburgs. Hence showing that centuries ago Croatia was well known for tourism.

Today, virtually all of Opatija’s grand buildings exist and it continues to function as one of Croatia’s premier tourism destinations.

No, i didnt take any of these. A couple of them i downloaded from different sources, while some of the pics were taken by my friend from Rijeka who occasionaly sends me photos from that region :)

I like Opatija very much, but every time I see name of this promenade, I get angry. I don't think Franz Joseph deserves to have any memorial in Croatia.

I dont really have any bad opinions on it. My guess is they are just trying to keep Opatija feel traditional and visitors to feel kinda what it was like in past, big part of town and villas were built by Austrians.

Good question Wicky. Both developed around the same time. I'm not too sure which of the 2 kicked off first, but as far as I know Opatija was always the most popular. Opatija was the biggest and best with the classy hotels and villas therefore my guess is that it was Opatija that started tourism in the Adriatic over a century ago. In regards to Crikvenica, I passed thru it a few times and it was nice as well. We'll probably post images on Crikvenica too.

Opatija is the better known resort. European royalty frequented it. Crikvenica on the other side of Rijeka is not too bad, but I like Opatija better. This is Crikvenica:
