View Full Version : What Is Your Favorite Building In Milwaukee?
i_am_hydrogen February 8th, 2005, 02:01 PM I apologize in advance if this thread has already been done before.
What is your favorite building in Milwaukee and why? If you want, you can include a photograph in your post.
edsg25 February 8th, 2005, 03:12 PM what's the building east of the river with the Wyndom Hotel in it? I absolutely love the way you can look at it from one angle and it appears to be the front and then shift 45 degrees to another angle and that appears to be the front. Very attractive.
Ben February 8th, 2005, 05:29 PM You know, you said building in general so I'm going to go out in left field here.
My Favorites
Quadracci Pavilion
It's just simply awesome. For folks that have never visited the recognizable addition, or at least researched it or have learned about it from a local, they might not know that as the website clearly states, an average 2 story family home can fit inside the main gathering hall and that this building has an elevator for it. It's size is VERY deceiving in skyline photos. That and my taste for high-end audio gear, and just finessing exotic designs in general, I can completely appreciate the look of this thing and I must say that it's photos are remarkable and that I will make a trip to this thing very soon. Some of my favorite speaker designs kind of resemble this exoticness - here (http://www.bwspeakers.com/images/SpeakerModel/images/Model_Nautilus/large_grille_off.jpg)($40k/pair). here (http://www.bwspeakers.com/images/SpeakerModel/images/Nautilus_800/large_grille_off.jpg)($16k/pair), and here (http://www.bwspeakers.com/images/SpeakerModel/images/DM604_S3/large_black.jpg)($1,400k/pair - I own these).
Miller Stadium
It's just a ball diamond, and while I'm not into sports very much in general and not really into baseball anymore like I was as a kid(God I didn't like the brewers! I liked the Braves). I just like it damn it.
100 East Wisconsin
I'm not much for this kind of design; I like it mixed in with modern and sleek architecture, but I don't simply prefer old designs like this 100%. But, this one is charming somehow. Maybe it's the peak? Or maybe it's the way it looks at night with the lighting? Who knows.
I don't really care for the bank. I looks ok during the daytime, but it's mostly for statistics and night time pleasure as far as pure skyline reasons(the exterior design isn't remarkable). When UV Club and Kilbourn finish I'm sure I'll be loving those and lets hope that I can become infatuated with a pair of signature twin towers in Milwaukee at the compliments/expense of US Bank and Q&B.
Steely Dan February 8th, 2005, 06:04 PM the calatrava art museum addition goes without saying, so i'll just list my 3 other favorites:
Wisconsin Gas Building:

Milwaukee City Hall:

Bank One Plaza:

US Bank would also make my list if it were not for those god-awful signs that mar the exposed structural cross-bracing at the top of the tower.
Markitect February 8th, 2005, 08:26 PM what's the building east of the river with the Wyndom Hotel in it? I absolutely love the way you can look at it from one angle and it appears to be the front and then shift 45 degrees to another angle and that appears to be the front. Very attractive.
That would be the Milwaukee Center.
The anti-cheesehead February 8th, 2005, 08:33 PM That old one.

looksee February 9th, 2005, 12:47 AM The Central Library, which was even better when it was also the Public Museum. It literally echoed with atmosphere--the current museum building can't hold a candle to it. http://www.the2buds.com/pc/wi/WI_0011.jpg ] http://www.december.com/places/mke/images/mplf.jpg
i_am_hydrogen February 9th, 2005, 01:53 AM My personal favorite is the Gas Building. I've always been fond of the art deco style in general. I love the coloring of the granite and brick. At night, it looks so beautiful the way it's lit up. Also, the flame on top is one of the most original appurtenances I've come across. Back when I was really young, my mom used to tell me what the colors of the flame meant, so I have some good memories associated with it, too.

I looove the Cudahy towers because they bring a (very appropriate) air of upper-east side manhattan blue bloodedness to the east side.

CG5 June 21st, 2005, 10:11 AM There are several on my list that have not been mentioned, namely 1260 Prospect, Plankinton Arcade, and the Metro Hotel.
Markitect June 21st, 2005, 08:37 PM haha! whats with those places, anyway? can markitect please post somethig on that, damnit!
"Retirement Silos" isn't exactly accurate. Yeah, they're cylindrical towers, but they're not all retirement homes--they are public housing units for eldrerly, handicapped, and other low income residents. Unlike other cities which grouped their high-rise public housing projects together, Milwaukee spread such projects around the city.
Coldwake June 21st, 2005, 10:43 PM haha Markitect! that response was like "'ugh fine... I'll give them what they want, here's some bits of info"
really though you have an amazing knowledge of the city, glad you're here at our disposal. :)
Bonjourtoledo June 25th, 2005, 03:15 AM By far nothing beats the Milwaukee City Hall. I identify that beautiful image very well when I think about Milwaukee besides the fact the "Laverne & Shirley" theme song plays everytime in my head when I think about 'waukee.
MarquetteHoops June 25th, 2005, 07:32 AM I've always loved Mitchell Building the most. As far as others: St. Josephat and St. Stanislaus, Public Library, Iron Block (Excelsior Block).
