So I'm anxiously awaiting some opinions on this one. 40748246 June 22nd, 2005, 05:44 PM Which Milwaukee mayor do you prefer? Since I haven`t lived im the area for a while, I would say Mayor Mayer. 40748246 June 22nd, 2005, 05:44 PM Which Milwaukee mayor do you prefer? Since I haven`t lived im the area for a while, I would say Mayor Mayer or Mayer Mayor. EastSider June 22nd, 2005, 08:08 PM ^You and badger share some similar characteristics. Buzzcut June 22nd, 2005, 09:51 PM Norquist is the best, by far. His vision helped spark the revitalization of Milwaukee, especially downtown and in the neighborhoods near downtown. Barrett has yet to make his mark. Time will tell. Maier was not a good mayor. Besides Summerfest, what else did he do for this city? Not much. He presided over the urban renewal and freeway construction mistakes that this city is still trying to recover from. 40748246 June 23rd, 2005, 12:07 AM ^You and badger share some similar characteristics. What is it that makes you uneasy? Kyoto June 23rd, 2005, 05:48 AM I liked Zeidler the best, he was very aggressive in his annexation campaign, but if he was a little more aggressive we would have annexed pesky Greenfield! >=( But if we're talking about post-Annexation era mayors, id have to say Barrett CG5 June 23rd, 2005, 02:40 PM What the hell has Barett done that gives him even the tiniest candle to hold against Norquist? Please look at Milwaukee circa 1988, when Norquist entered office. Now please look at Milwaukee circa 2003, when Norquist left office. Why did Norquist leave office? It was due, in part, to sexual harassment charges. But it was due in larger part to the fact that Norquist was taking a job as the President of the Congress for New Urbanism. He's the author of a (very well-written) book on urban planning and revitalization. His influence and New Urbanist leanings can be seen all over the city. Look at the Beerline, for example. Or the Riverwalk. Or the Park East Corridor. A quote from an article on the former mayor: "All modesty aside, Norquist feels his greatest accomplishment as mayor was getting the city to like itself and its urbanism, rather than remaking itself as a suburb." And that's the honest to God truth. The biggest change I've noticed, by far, in the area over the past few years (since I started paying attention, that is) is that people aren't embarassed to say that they're from Milwaukee anymore. There was a crucial attitude shift under Mayor Norquist...Milwaukee isn't apologizing for itself anymore. milwaukeeunseen June 23rd, 2005, 04:07 PM Mayor Norquist and Mayor Barrett are polar opposites in governing style. Norquist was outspoken, in your face, and didn't particularly work well with others. Barrett is more soft-spoken, tepid, and is constantly striving to build relationships with people -- including the suburbs. I personally witnessed several occassions where Norquist went off at the mere mention of regional cooperation. Barrett wanted regional cooperation, right from his first day in office. I personally believe it's better to work with Waukesha than to shun them, because they're not gonna go away. But the problem with Barrett is this: it's been over a year now, and where, oh where are the results? Bonjourtoledo June 25th, 2005, 01:48 AM What is this? A poll in regards to which mayor for 'waukee--lord! How about Kermit the Frog or Frosty the Snowman--they prolly make a better mayor than whoever is running. |
