View Full Version : New IKEA store for South East QLD

It looks like IKEA are rolling out a super store in Queensland.
The lease on the existing store at the Logan Homemaker Center is set to expire in 2006, making way for the move south along the M1 Motorway. Still in the Brisbane ~ Gold Coast Corridor on the M1.
There is an online web survey (http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeaNearYouView?storeId=18&langId=-26&catalogId=10101&StoreName=springwood) where you can 'name the store'. Silly and I guess aimed at Marketing purposes.
From the Ikea website "We are currently undergoing expansion in Australia and our aim is to ensure as many people as possible have access to an IKEA store"
http://www.ikea-australia-east.com/springwood_survey/map_final.gif
Update.
If the map does not display go to ikea.com.au and select Springwood, then the new store link.
Danubis February 10th, 2005, 03:59 PM they should be opening up a new store on the northside, like in between bris and sun coast and leave the existing one inbetween bris and gold coast. its silly that they only have one store in qld, not that i would buy any of the cheap crappy furniture, but closing one store just to open up one down the road is silly.
chrisaus February 10th, 2005, 04:03 PM shit queensland really is the boomtown!!! lol
sorrry
nagelixin February 11th, 2005, 12:44 AM I believe a store would be opening on the Northside, as part of a $100m Australian expansion plan.
Prior to Homebush and Richmond opening the Springwood store was the largest in the country.
Oriolus February 11th, 2005, 03:40 AM But will it be as large as the Ikea store in Stockholm?? - featured on Amazing Race last night - it's the biggest in the world. I'm assuming no.
ABS February 11th, 2005, 03:57 AM They should call it 'Ikea Southside'. Ikea Logan, Lkea PAcific Highway and Ikea Paradise road all sound really lame. 'Ikea Southside' is the best of a really lame bunch.
Danubis February 11th, 2005, 06:29 AM 'Ikea - glorified crazy clarks' sounds good to me
ABS February 11th, 2005, 07:34 AM Ikea - Swedish for cheap crap.
nagelixin February 11th, 2005, 01:26 PM Id say it will be around 20 000sqm. I can't see it being as big as Sydney or Melbourne stores.
nagelixin April 30th, 2006, 06:49 AM Bump..... Over a year old and now only making the news....
neilo63 April 30th, 2006, 07:01 AM I drive past that site a few times a week and i got to say it is one massive arse project, absolutley massive. I cant wait to have a look around when its completed this year.
SoulvisionQ1 April 30th, 2006, 10:29 AM Id say it will be around 20 000sqm. I can't see it being as big as Sydney or Melbourne stores.
Huuuuu? I'm confused! But this article says it will be the biggest in Aus?? 29,000sq store!
Ikea store assembly goes to plan
APRIL 28: The Ikea development at Slacks Creek is on target to open in October, says project manager Andreas Petersson.
``We are now less than six months away from seeing the first full-sized Ikea store in Queensland,'' Mr Petersson said. ``The new store in Logan will be the largest Ikea in Australia and is designed to cope with more than two million visitors in one year.''
Construction started last September on the 29,000sqm store, which will monopolise the corner of Paradise Rd and Pacific Hwy.
Ikea construction manager Richard Hynard said the structural frame was progressing well.
``The demolition and civil trade packages are now complete,'' he said. ``Erection of steel framing and steel wall cladding is expected to start in May.''
The $150million development, which will be four times the size of Ikea on Springwood Rd, will create more than 300 jobs.
Mr Petersson said the store would stock more products and feature a 300-seat restaurant with bistro and delicatessen.
A $150million giant homemaker centre is being built next to Ikea.
nagelixin April 30th, 2006, 11:40 AM SoulvisionQ1 - That post is over 14 months old .... :-)
Neo April 30th, 2006, 11:53 AM I wonder if the store comes in a pack from Sweeden that they have to put together with allen keys?

Some parts of it are. The walls in the Adelaide store are from Sweden.

Aussie Bhoy April 30th, 2006, 03:51 PM Soulvision level with us, do you work for Ikea marketing or something? Who gives the slightest damn about some crap store opening.

Yeah, I'm on the board of Ikea Australia... no...The fact is that this just contributes more to our already booming economy... And it's not just a store its more than a store! If you have only been to the one in Logan, i can see why you don't giva a dam...i wouldn't! but this will be similar to the one in homebush bay, Sydney which is IMO really good! :) that's my explanation...
ohhh and not to mention the 300 jobs from this... nagelixin seems to be also excited about this! :)
ABS April 30th, 2006, 05:47 PM The new store is under construction on the corner of Paradise Road and Pacific Highway at Slacks Creek near the roundabout.
Shado May 9th, 2006, 05:05 AM Oddly enough the map has it wrong on it's location, it's on the other side of paradise road. There is going to be a new busway station built across the pacific highway service road opposite it. One wonders if Ikea customers and PT users are ever one and the same.
ABS May 9th, 2006, 05:21 AM That's an interesting question. Last time I check 16-25Kg flat packs were not exactly public transport friendly.
BrizzyChris May 9th, 2006, 06:49 AM What is really that bad about Ikea??? Some of their stuff is really funky, and it's good to have some cheaper options on the market. Obviously some of you guys have money sprouting out your asses.
SoulvisionQ1 May 9th, 2006, 08:25 AM ^^ I agree, MORE OPTIONS!!
nagelixin June 13th, 2006, 01:47 PM Employment opportunities for the new store are currently being advertised on Seek. Still no official date on the new store opening, or any sales at the old store.
sunshinedeluxe June 14th, 2006, 12:27 PM Just heard the new IKEA in Logan has a DA for a 500 seat restaurant!!!, must be a pretty massive development, eh!!... I had a coffee once in the Springwood IKEA and don't believe it had much more than 20 seats.....
neilo63 June 14th, 2006, 12:44 PM Well it is a massive site... MASSIVE!!! building too!

SoulvisionQ1 June 14th, 2006, 12:49 PM ^^ I can't wait!!! It will be the biggest in the nation!
sunshinedeluxe June 15th, 2006, 12:03 AM Is the furniture going to be equally massive, how about a 50 seater sofa and bed sizes to fit a harem in...
Brissy4me June 15th, 2006, 09:38 AM Do you think it will stock many water saving devices and energy efficient items??
nagelixin June 15th, 2006, 10:09 AM I believe that the site is not just Ikea, it will also include a 'cut and paste' Homemaker centre....
Tyson June 17th, 2006, 03:10 PM Is the furniture going to be equally massive, how about a 50 seater sofa and bed sizes to fit a harem in...
Haha you got to be kidding! Just about everything in Ikea seems to be made for the people with limited space. Which come to think of it is probably true of most apartment dwellers. I mean when you have a look at those mockup display bedrooms and such. How many of you are in the market for a bed that folds out of the wall and can also convert into a desk? Only available in white, cream, beige etc. Or bright red, bright blue, bright green, etc... hehe
Ikea are great for some things but no so great for others.
sunshinedeluxe June 19th, 2006, 06:56 AM Thanks for the Sat images, I spent half of Saturday getting to the site and having a look around. It's a massive development. Nagelixin - you're right about other shops, in the sense that it's actually two development going up next to each other. On one side is a medium sized shopping centre (smaller than Hyperdome but still of decent size), and next to it is a new IKEA store about double the size of the shopping centre!!! One of the workmen there said the shopping centre would contain over 100 shops, this gives a bit of a scale to the IKEA development.....
Apparently the car park for the development is well over 2000 car spaces, I wonder how the road is going to cope with that sort of traffic...
bracken June 19th, 2006, 08:43 AM Do you think it will stock many water saving devices and energy efficient items??
Hi Brissy for me,
I found this copy in the Queensland Business Review a few weeks back;
The external façade, which will significantly reduce heat absorption, is just one of the many design innovations to be implemented in line with IKEA's strict world-wide ecologically sustainable development approach.
"The building has been designed to be environmentally friendly, the superstore will not have air conditioning but instead have a chill beam cooling system, whereby cold water runs through pipes that in turn keep the temperature cool and contant throughout the year," Barclay Mowlem's Glenn Rashleigh says.
"This will bring economies to energy consumption and ongoing costs, particularly as IKEA are utilising the sprinkler water storage tanks as chilled water storage for the chilled beam system."
This installation of this system is both a first for IKEA and Barclay Mowlem.
Other initiatives include rainwater harvesting, solar power for water heating,
natural light into the warehouse space, and a building management system to control and monitor the lighting and mechanical systems.
Nice to see a developer actually making a clear step forward reducing negative environmental impact when developing a green field site. Go IKEA!!!
Brissy4me June 19th, 2006, 09:58 AM Thanks Bracken.
SoulvisionQ1 June 19th, 2006, 10:43 AM Thats really good!! Ikea is the best!

i'd be interested to see if this actually works
