i give it a 8, this city has a skyline full of office towers, and most of them dont look that dull when seen in a cluster...
i only give citys a 3 and under when it really deserves a 3 and under.. and so far, i only had to do that once of twice...

its not very tall either, both london and frankfurt have four buildings taller than anything in istanbul. i give it six too... most of the highrise stuff is bad quality and its only the very tall stuff that is decent - something even asimov admits when hes being truthful. however i have high hopes for istanbul as it can only get better as they just need to knock a few hundred concrete blocks down and replace them with nicer buildings.

Okay. 8! Compared to it's population, there are not many high-rises. But I like the design of Istanbul buildings. Much better than Frankfurt, even if the buildings are not that tall. I think it is the No. 1 in Europe! "Frankfurters" and Londoners may feel a bit envy... Good that Istanbul does not build these exaggerated tall ugly skyscrapers. WOW!:D ;)

Eh, the skyline is okay...I would visit more for the history. I haven't really seen the new plans, so I couldn't say if i'd like it in "2010". IMO stuff some people said about Istanbul made me think the skyline was like NYC :D but uh, who knows?

because of the earthquake risk a tall one is more expensive. so they have to build 2x30 storey instead of one big 60

notice all the small family suburban houses right next to the skyscrapers :bash:
that's just bad urbanism in my book.
overall, the city has a large number of highrises and is developing fast, I'm impressed, but doesn't have a good urban structure (or at least I can't see it), it looks like all these sracpers and other neighbourhoods are thrown randomly all over the area... where's the center?
overall I must give it a 7/10 although it's not really the type of city I like

The Maslak Business District has some skyscrapers and it's bright and happy looking, but over all, the city does not really have much for such a huge city. Most Euro cities don't have much of a skyline.

Very interesting. It's on my wish-list to visit it once in my life.
The sky-line is amazing. Especially the coastal foto's and those with the big bridge with the sky-scrapers at the background.
For European standards, I would give it a 9.5/10. A mark 8/10 if you compare it to all other cities all over the world!!! As said before: the sky-line is nice looking, but not very big for such a big city. Anyway... I like it!!!

The policy of Istanbul Municipality is a bit different from the classical American City planning. A standard American city forms a city center / downtown in the core of the city with scrapers, all together, this is also adopted by many European cities also. So in just one shot you can see the whole skyline. In Istanbul in order to reduce traffic etc. problems, municipality prefers creating several centers. So we have more than one modern skylines (Levent-Gayrettepe, Maslak and smaller ones Şişli and Kozyatağı), and even city planners are working on opening new centers in few years. I guess it could better if they were all together.
I agree your point about the houses with gardens next to skyscrapers. :)
