Nathia Gali, is about two hour's drive from Islamabad
It is one and half hours drive to Murree from Islamabad, 32 km away from Murree
Abbottabad is an hour's drive from Nathia Gali
Nathia Gali to Abbottabad is about 34 km dropping steeply through the beautiful valleys with few trees to the river bed.
Thandiani Thandiani is 31 km from main Abbottabad City and 25 km from Thandiani-Nathiagali crossing. The drive takes more or less 80 minutes from Abbottabad with lovely views on both sides of the road.

Muree has become a shopping mall. It isnt a resort any more. And patriata is pretty much going to become a waste heap and lose its natural charm once the detestable New Murree plan is developed. The government needs to develop some conservation strategy to save our natural areas from losing their charm to unchecked commercial development. Otherwise, all the beatiful areas we have left right now, will be gone in a couple of years.
Swat's tree covered mountains have started looking very very barren already.

Murree hahahahahahha
I think same for murree to its shopping mall or market area its not Hill station now
Thanks to Great Pakistani Government this is the way to protect Pakistan and Pakistani areas.Great work done by government.
My suggestion is that kill all leopards in nathia gali which government is doing now they have already kill 2 leopards in Nathia gali and caught 1 leopard.
So that trees can be easily cutted down without any fear of leopards.
Trees cutting has already started in nathia gali too they have cut many i have seen them with my eyes.only 3 or 4 mountains have thick forests there others are barren.
Again thanks to......hahaahhahah...You know better.
I am with you cut trees and build plazas on nathia gali like murree.
Bhurban hotel i hate that big hotel on mountains It ruins that green mountains and valleys.Anybody who visit bhurban know better.
i will cry dont start discussing of trees.Because after10 years there will be no tree to Cry on.

BE ON POSITVE SIDE.
Our Pakistan beauty does not end with trees there are many areas in Pakistan which dont have any trees but still most beautiful.
Like HUNZA,SKARDU,GILGIT,CHITRAL,Almost all lakes of Pakistan are without trees but still beautiful with the exception of Mahodand Lake in Swat And Banjossa lake in Azad Kashmir.
It does not mean that tree cutting should be allowed
I beg to Pakistan givernment that please do something about this.

Jeez make up your mind already!!!
My point is that instead of conservative development which preserves the beauty and serenity of our natural areas, we develop them like termites and within a decade all the idyllic natural charm the place had earlier has disappeared!
Our forests have been cut away from most northern mountains resulting in huge landslides, muddy river waters and clogged up dams. Our hill resorts are becoming commercialized to an extent that they loose their natural beauty, and become ugly eyesores.
Wouldnt it be better if minimal development was allowed in such an area and only a few sporadic sites were developed devoted to some idyllic lodges and campsites by the streams? They would at least preserve the scenic environment and retain the charm of the land.
If you really need a shopping mall that bad, why not go to some airconditioned one in ur city instead of using the northern areas as shopping malls?

With your kind of attitude, yes we may never be able to save our green areas. That is such a negative and unproductive way to approach such a problem.
Why do I write about something that I know?
If you know something is wrong, you need to tell more people about it and raise awareness. When more people know, more people take action. And the government is just catering to some big buisness which is going to make lots of money out of it. They dont give a shit about the green areas. If somebody does give a shit about them ( dunno about u, but I do) then they need to speak up! even on however a small thing as this forum. Thats the only way to make a difference.

So what you are proposing is, that its okay - wait - GOOD to cut down the trees in the punjab?
PakBOY, you dont seem to realise that Murree is a - wait - WAS a tourist spot because of its natural beauty once upon a time. Then it turned ugly and the tourists were taken up by Patriata which is in the process of becoming ugly. The New Murree project is going to destroy whatever is left of any natural beauty by cutting down the trees and replanting some small alien species from somewhere else thereby completely transforming the area into a man made housing society with a couple of trees here and there.
Dude, somebody needs to take you on a camping trip out of Lahore that shows you that its not only glitzy shopping malls and big mansions that life is all about. For all I know, most of us wont even be living in those houses or whatever it is that New Murree is constructing. For us, it would be just a loss of a great outdoors area and a gain of an eyesore.

New Murree is just an idea for the sake of more money initially they have purpose that
only 4 thousand trees were cutted (do 4 thousand are only).Pakboy if go to murree it become so ugly because of shopping malls and hotel there if government initially purpose a plan for this so that no malls can be built after some specific area but you go now still today construction is on the top in Murree everywhere big big plazas and shopping malls are beeing made for the sake of money (illegally).Remember they are all illegal still government do not do anything.Even in Murree they have made Bus stop,Petrol pump,And garrages .hill station is not for this purposes.and In Nathia gali i think after 10 years Nathai Gali will also the same.Because tourists are now diverting from Murree to Nathia Gali.Even i dont stay at murreee because of ugly look of that Hill Station. And In Bhurban i ask y they build such a big hotel only for income nor they think of thousand of trees which cut because of this expensive hotel.

how big was the Pakistani population back then? how big was the vacationing middle class? They at least had a better quality time there however little went.
Most people probably dont even know what Fort Monroe is. We do not promote our tourist spots well. The website of PTDC has pictures of coral reefs on it instead of having some old mughal forts or the high northern mountains on it. Do we really offer that kind of tourism?
and as for it being made for money, everything is made for money, especially in pakistan. .

Well if accessability is the problem then I would be in favour of demolishing all roads leading to Swat and other "unexploited" northern areas of Pakistan in order to keep the greedy Choudhari's of Punjab away from it.
As far Pakboy's baseless and abolutely void of logic support for the New Murree project is concerned, I will quote a couple of words from Cowasjee's latest column.....
But all is not lost. For almost 60 years I have been a reader of Dawn and without fail read the third editorial first. On September 15, the subject of the third editorial was the ‘Mounting backlog of cases’ in the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, is starting off this new judicial year with a backlog of over 30,000 cases. Whew! This is enormous and must be addressed somehow or the other.
Yet, with all this at his back, Chief Justice Chaudhry, prompted by a column printed in Dawn on September 8 (the latest of one of the many columns written on the subject), has taken suo moto notice of the environmentally disastrous ‘New Murree’ scheme (or scam) which, if it happens, will cause the murder of hundreds of thousands of coniferous trees, thus causing soil erosion, with consequential landslides, and affecting the annual rainfall and thus the storage of the Rawal dams.
Our rulers and their politicians, together with their ‘developer’ sidekicks, will stop at nothing to assuage their greed — they blatantly and shamelessly air their contempt for their country and its people.
Well done, our new Chief Justice, who obviously loves and knows the value of trees and forests and can feel for the environment. We must just hope that this case does not get lost amidst the 30,000.

I agree with oooga Booga
Dont you know about National Parks in Pakistan (a protected area)
You know the only province of Pakistan which has no national Park is Punjab.
And Now Azad Kashmir government also realize the importance of Environment, ent after Nwfp. They have recently build Machiara National Park in Muzaffarabad inspite of wishes of Local People who wants to cut rain forests.
Punjab government think like america no Environment only ecenomy and Money.
They have first destroyed Murree,Then Bhurban and now Patriata
And Now i am hearing almost every week a Housing project in Murree or bhurban.

Actually, punjab govt thinks worse than America, here we have lots of protected areas even within cities.
What is currently happening here is the thoughtless and greedy commercialization of our beautiful spots and natural places. Once they are gone, then will people like Pakboy realize what they have lost. Seems like these people are coming out of a village or something that every building everywhere, no matter how trashy a development, seems like a sign of modernity. After those buildings are built and the place is completely destroyed will be when they realize the price of their shallow minded modernity.

You perhaps dont know the way to Patriata and Bhurban is far more difficult and sloopy than Murree.Patriata can only be approached by chair lifts.
Just think if Swat were Near to karachi it will have more tourists than Murree.
Ok Name the national parks of Punjab >Margalla hills national park is a thanks to capital Islamabad government which is not punjab.
Nwfp is already running ayubia just see the park and wildlife there you will be amazed to see thousands of protected trees.
Not like murree hundred of buildings.
Nwfp has declared Two new lakes to protect and inlcude in National park which are Lulusar and Saif ul Malook.
May be after few years Nwfp declared ushu valley as national park too.
Nwfp is doing atleast some work to conserve beauty.

That picture up there is a very very sad picture.. Murree is being destroyed thanks to Punjab Haqumat! Once its all gone, then people would realise what they have lost.
Can something be done about this ? Awareness should be created. Write to Imran Khan, he'll protest..

And the sad thing is that construction is still on top in Murree.I have recently visited murree and there 4 or 5 new plazas and hotels under construction.

I might be a bit late answering to your comments but i must refute the fact that the tree's in Swat are being cut down at a huge rate. I have traveled a lot in this year in 2004 and 2005 and i have gone quite deep into the area. I did not see any destruction of trees but i did see some modernization. One thing that bugged me was the fact that the inhabitants were using the river that rages through swat as a toilet. In Kalam i saw that they were building hotels in the middle of the raging river! Its quite amazing how much modernization has occured.

what you asked him to shoot the damn bandars :ohno: :ohno: Zain yaar tu bara zalim insaan nikla. hehehe:lol:
Oyee yaar, don't blame these poor monkeys. Blame our jahil public. These Rhesus Macaques are very intelligent. They used to live in the surrounding forests. When people started feeding them all kind of desi stuff, they came out of their forest hiding and now you see them hanging around motels and roads, looking for easy pickings. Now when these monkey left the forests, soon followed the leopards. And now we constantly hear of leopards attacking people and their livestock as they have nothing to hunt in the forest. The best way to tackle this problem is not to start shooting them, but to educate our public (particularly tourists) not to feed them. When they won't find food, they will move back to the forests and the natural ecological balance will be restored. And yes, this monkey business is very common everywhere, from Kenya to our neighborhood in the east:)
Also, i am posting a link to an article that i wrote and was published by the IUCN Cat's Specialist Group. Its about the Man-Leopard conflicts in Galliat area. One of the reasons, i have mentioned in it is the shifting of these monkey population from the forests into the nearby towns.

Bhai mian, these monkey were always there. Its just that now, they are more humans living in places where these monkeys were. So infact we have enchroached on their habitat. It's not the otherway around. And to tell you the truth the population of Rhesus Macaques has infact decreased over the last couple of decades due to increased human settlement, pet trade and deforestation in Galliat, Swat and Indus Kohistan. Healthy populations are only found in Galliat, elsewhere the are becoming increasingly uncommon. :ohno: :ohno:
You know what, The Common Hanuman Langur was a pretty common sight in Galiat just 40 years back, just like these Rhesus Macaques. Now there are only 200 of them left in Pakistan. All are extinct from Gallliat, only a small population now survives in Shogran. I am sure you would not like that to happen to these bandars as well.

We were trying to get a nightshot of Murree from a isolated part of the forest about a 10 minute walk from the road and vehicle. While I was setting up my equipment my driver was looking behind me looking out for cheetahs. He was soooo scared! He is jaldi jaldi! I am like Baloch sahib I need a bit time. He got so scared at one point he made a run for it after some noises in the forest. I ran with the tripod and the camera still attached as well. Besides they don't show room/suites availability, rates or do online booking.
Its really needed these days to improve bookings for guests who are not members but just occassional tourists and visitors to the town.

Wow man nice pictures. A great place to visit. On top of that dual cornage road being built between Islamabad and Murre would give a great boost to tourism industry.
Please provide me more info about this road
