View Full Version : Toronto Bloor West village and skyline pics
Filip February 14th, 2005, 12:47 AM Some pics I took, sorry the quality of some of the car pics aren't so great but the view is amazing. I decided to post them anyway...
Enjoy
The skyline as viewed from the Gardiner Expressway, many new condos are under construction here part of the cityplace development.

The Bloor west village, a really nice predominantly Ukrainian neighbourhood. Look at all those Ukie flags.:D

LOL! I actually agree with you. People often see only the good pictures of Toronto, and think it's a huge, modern metropolis like NYC. But it's not.
Anyway, he just showed the Bloor West Village, it's not really a "village", more like a Ukrainian community inside Toronto. That's where we had our protest, during the Ukrainian elections! :colgate:
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:06 AM Bloor West is pretty amazing, I live nearby :hi:
Minus points for not showing the detailing of the chapters buidling (and insides), the library, and the side streets. JC Salons is where I get my haircuts :)
On the minus side, BWV has really suffered from the original built form, which included mostly single (and some double) rise commercial. Thus, the architectural quality of the nieghbourhood is mixed at best.

If you think NYC doesn't have areas that look exactly like this (or very close), I'll personally walk you through them next time I'm in NYC. And still, it's a cool area; very lively, always tons of people, some good restaurants, and very good alfresco dining in Summer. Not to mention an amazing park five minutes from the area.

LOL! I used to live right off Runymede, in this nice old house.:D I went back today to check out what it looks like now and well I haven't seen that hood in over 4 years and I must say it looks terrific! Great stores, restaurants and wow the EE women over there are OMG...:)

I know it do. I go to NYC every summer. NY CITY doesn't have many spots like these. Even areas outside of Manhattan, like Brooklyn are more built up.
Anyway, I didn't say anything bad, just that Toronto is not on the same scale as NYC. I think everyone can agree with that.

Hmm, NYC just like TO has its small low rise sections, even in Manhattan. Have you heard of Tribeca? Toronto is a huge, modern metropolis, the closest Canada will ever have. Though, why am I comparing Toronto with NYC? Toronto is Toronto and I pray to god it will never end up looking like NYC.;)

... and the Ukie Festival! :colgate:
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:19 AM ^ yes, I was there last year, pretty cool gathering. All my neighbours are Eastern Europeans of some sort pretty much. Ukranians are def. the majority...
Another benefit of this area of course is that it is on the subway line, making the downtown only about 10-12 minutes away. The Beach may have nicer built form, but it's certainly not as acessible.

LOL. Have YOU heard of TriBeCa, and have been there? It doesn't have low-rises like that.
And rest assured, Toronto will even come close to looking like NYC, so you have nothing to worry about.

Definately not 10-12 minutes. More like 20-25. What do you consider Downtown? It takes me 10 minutes to get from Union to St. George, or Queens Park. To go all the way to BWV is much longer!
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:24 AM ^ yes I did :)
I thought it was a really cool festival actually.

Well, Union is the heart of downtown. But you can get to Bay St. stop in about 12 or so minutes. I'd say Bay would be a strong contender for being downtonw :)

Yeah, the rain actually sucked. If I remember correctly they cancelled one day because of it.
I'm half Ukranian half Russian iMariah, but I was born in Croatia.

Tribeca or at least the Tribeca I've been to has normal 5 storey buildings, most of them being converted storage/manufacturing plants. That can be compared to many districts in Toronto. So what if Toronto will never end up looking like NYC? There is imo nothing shocking about a bunch of skyscrapers thrown onto an island. If Toronto was an island and all the skyscrapers were bunched up it would give a similar effect (with not that much height though).
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:32 AM ^ :bash:
Don't speak badly of NYC. I like Toronto and I hope it will move away from being compared to NYC (a comparison it will always lose), but let's not kid ourselves. NYC is the king city of the world.

I don't think highly of NYC in the first place, that's my opinion if someone comes on my threads and starts saying how Toronto will never be NYC well they can expect an honest answer from me.
Now, for the king of the world part, I'd say that would be London or Paris culturally/historically and Hong Kong for high-rises.

I comletely agree. Let the argument end.

STOP IT!
I never said Toronto is WORSE, I just said that it will never BE like NYC. I think most people can understand that.
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:37 AM ^^ come now come. HK high-rises look like Scarborough slabs, except three times as tall. There's nothing to most of them. NYC, on the other hand, has architectural merit to its density.
As for Toronto, it needs its own identity instead of constant comparisons to mini-NYC. At the moment, I'm glad the city is booming like mad, the new condos are really making the extended downtown an uber-cool place. High Rises are starting to annex the Annex (:)), so sooner or later Bloor West Village will see a bit of an upheaval, as well. Until then, it still remains a great Eastern European area.

Filip February 14th, 2005, 02:42 AM STOP IT!
I never said Toronto is WORSE, I just said that it will never BE like NYC. I think most people can understand that.
First of all Stevan was simply teasing KM, since KM always says Toronto is a big village and is boring blablablabla. Stevan actually said Toronto's a huge, great metropolis in some other threads, check it out.
You come onto a thread saying how Toronto is a village and will never be NYC. Where the hell did that come from? Who mentioned NYC in the first place, the nearest thing to NYC that's on this thread is a pic of the NY development in North York. You said Toronto isn't this huge, modern metropolis well what is it then? Toronto is slightly comparable to NYC since: it has the most skyscraper in Canada, Canada's largest city, Canada's respective center, Canada's financial bull. That to me sounds like what NYC is to the USA, quite comparable, non?:)
Now let's get back to discussing BWV and not NYC.
Sergei February 14th, 2005, 02:43 AM Yeah, the rain actually sucked. If I remember correctly they cancelled one day because of it.
I'm half Ukranian half Russian iMariah, but I was born in Croatia.
WOW! Really? I always thought you were Polish for some reason.
You're the same mix as me, lol!
Why don't you participate more in Ukrainian, Russian discussions? :(
Filip February 14th, 2005, 02:49 AM fool.
Hmm, something I've just noticed. You always resort to petty personal attacks when somebody disagrees with you.:|

Why don't you participate more in Ukrainian, Russian discussions? :(
I am somewhat disconnected from my heritage seeing as how I never actually lived in either Russia or Ukraine. I don't really speak either, although I can understand a tiny bit of Russian. I feel more Yugoslavian, but at the same time I can't really say that anymore, and I do not feel either Serbian or Croatian. I guess Canada was made for people like me.
Nonetheless, it is true I should know more about what is happening in those parts of the world.
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:54 AM Now let's get back to discussing BWV and not NYC.
Deal. I can't wait for this to get built:
http://img7.exs.cx/img7/3535/homemainr2c25iu.jpg
It will be right on the doorsteps of the park (can you imagine) and it looks fantastic.
BTW, there's also the Toronto forums filipe, you should stop by sometimes. And then there is also urbantoronto.com.

I think it's U/C now, I remember seeing cranes over there. One thing though, I remember the billboard for this project's been there for ages!
Sergei February 14th, 2005, 02:57 AM Hmm, something I've just noticed. You always resort to petty personal attacks when somebody disagrees with you.:|
How is it petty? I just don't want to waste my time and words on such stupid discussions, when it's obvious that you won't understand.
That word described everything.
Anyway, discussion ended.
salvius February 14th, 2005, 02:58 AM I think it's U/C now, I remember seeing cranes over there. One thing though, I remember the billboard for this project's been there for ages!
Yea, it's U/C. It's been there for ages because this was one of the worst cases of NIMBYism ever. It took Context a billion years to force this through.

:) I understand, it must be hard. But, it's never too late to get "connected". I mean, in reality you still have Russian and Ukrainian blood in you, so I don't think it's a bad idea to find out more about your heritage.
salvius February 14th, 2005, 03:00 AM ^ well, I did go to that festival :)
And it is my family's conscious choice to live in BWV--so I'm not completely alianted.

That's good to hear! Anyway, our culture is very interesting, and you should definately explore your roots, I'm sure you'll love them!
VelesHomais February 14th, 2005, 05:49 AM That's true. I learned few years ago that my great-great-grandparents spent a lot of time and possibly had business in St.Perersbourg :) so I got interested in that city. And a brother of my great-great-fathers brother lived in Paris.
Kommandant Mark February 14th, 2005, 06:04 AM That(Bloor St. West) is probably the best part of city, along with the Greek Town(Danforth Rd. running between Broadview and Pape Streets) and I got nothing against these areas of Toronto...:)
Everything else...~meh.
And I was there last year too, listening to Ruslana under the sea of umbreallas:yes:
salvius February 14th, 2005, 06:49 AM ^ you're a slavophile through and through. You should also like Roncesvalles then since it is also mostly a slavic neighbourhood.

salvius February 15th, 2005, 12:08 AM Btw, this just got built on my street (High Park). Very mediocre:

I decided to disregard that truce, if you'd read back you'd notice how rudely he criticized Toronto for no apparent reason instead of at least commenting on my pics (which is the polite thing to do in somebody's picture thread).
Obviously he doesn't realize how impolite it would be to go into a let's say Kiev picture thread and saying how ugly and run-down the city is. Comments like that (which are completely uneducated btw) have no place in a picture thread especially in the fototeka... Truce or no truce I had to explain to Singi why this thread has become so awfully long in one day.

Cool, I used to also live near there, on Glenlake avenue, in that tall block.

Those are nice commie blocks in an amazing area, they don't even look half as bad as some of the other ones in TO. I barely remember living there since it was 8 years ago when I first moved here, one thing I remember is a park I think it was called Lithuania park. I don't even know where it is anymore.:(

Thanks! It was an extremely hard picture to take, since we were speeding down the highway at 100 km/h and the windshield was really dirty (thus explaining the streaks in the pic). Glad you liked it, it's one of my favs too.;)

Auto-what?
Filip February 16th, 2005, 03:30 AM I have adobe photoshop elements, now I don't know how to use it and I've tweaked around looking for that auto (I think fix) thing and I couldn't find it. Ah well, I guess I'll have to borrow photoshop from a friend and install it then.
