JivecitySTL February 14th, 2005, 02:43 PM Well after a several month hiatus, I am once again starting my bi-monthly visits to your fair city. My next trip is March 10, 11, 12 & 13. I have some family and friend obligations while I'm there, but if there's time I'd love to meet up with some of you bitches and ho's. Steely-- gotta meet you, everyone says you are so Chicago (da Bearssss). edsg-- maybe we can grab some lox & bagels? Goonsta-- an El ride with you would change my life forever. fear not, BV; you're loved. we've penciled you in for the tour of the old Comiskey Park, a round of golf at the Lakeshore East, climbing the yellow flag pole at the Sun-Times building, a great Big Ten matchup between the Chicago Maroons and the Michigan Wolverines at Stagg Field, and catching a lecture at the U of I campus out on Navy Pier. Dinner at the Stock Yard Inn?
Tom in Chicago February 17th, 2005, 03:32 PM Let me know what the plan is. . . Steely?
24gotham February 18th, 2005, 12:36 AM ^ Me too, Me too!

that would be me. and happily the lox and bagels are still pretty good around here.
kind of reminds me: there was a thread here recently on the best of architecture in suburban Chicago. Nobody included North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe. I was there this weekend for a Bar Mitzvah and although I grew up on the North Shore, I had never been in this remarkable building before and I was blown away by it.
I forgot the name of the Japanese architect who designed it, but he did an even more smashing job on the inside than on the out.

minoru yamasaki, most famous for his role as the head architect for the ill-fated WTC towers in NYC.
JivecitySTL February 22nd, 2005, 02:21 PM ^I recently saw North Shore Congregation in a book about American Synogogues. It was pretty cool.
Wickedcity, I'm a yidlock as well.

Minoru Yamasaki also designed the ill-fated Pruitt-Igoe housing projects in St. Louis. . . funny thing is they came down the same time WTC went up. . . anyhow lox and bagels sound good to me. . . Manny's anyone???
JivecitySTL February 22nd, 2005, 10:16 PM Yamasaki also designed the Main Terminal at Lambert-St. Louis Int'l. Airport.
expat_marla February 22nd, 2005, 11:31 PM north shore in glencoe is stunning. another "member of the tribe" here. i forget the name of it but there is a synagogue on the south side that has recently undergone renovation, possibly the oldest synagogue in the chicago area? anyway, my mother and brother were there last year and said it was quite lovely. Me, I currently make do with the Great Synagogue in Sydney

Chicago Jews love lakefront settings. In additon to North Shore in Glencoe, two synagouges are also built directly on the lake in Highland Park. I forgot the name of the congregation, but another one (in the city) is also directly on the lake at Sheridan around Thorndale.

It may be KAM in Hyde Park. It was the oldest in the city.

expat_marla February 23rd, 2005, 02:51 AM temple shalom. i think i best not tell my mom that i forgot the name of temple shalom. at least i remember the name of my rabbi! temple shalom is gorgeous. i remember attending classes there as a child with my girlfriend melissa when her mom taught classes there.
i reckon i am going to have to seek out some impressive architecture here in sydney. have been underwhelmed since my arrival 2+ years ago and yet, i know there must be some wonderful structures here. yes, yes, the opera house and the harbour bridge are both incredible. and i marvel at them most days from my office view. but i know there is more out there. guess i have a mission!
wickedestcity February 23rd, 2005, 04:57 AM wow , all these yidden on this board. how about the Agudas Achim North Shore Congregation, in edgewater / uptown ,its nerly 120 years old

expat_marla February 23rd, 2005, 05:17 AM wow is right! did you see that ark? the tiling appears to be magnificent! now about those lox and bagels.... smoked salmon is aplenty here in sydney and always good but BAGELS! I want bagels! I'd even settle for a crap one from jewel or dominicks as they are far superior to what sydney has to offer.
wickedestcity February 24th, 2005, 09:50 PM new york has the best bagels though hands down , theres no compotition there

You'll get no argument from me. . .
Anyhow speaking of New York and Jews. . . I was passing through the Times Square subway station with my girlfriend a few years ago and was approached by this hassid with the hat and curls. . . he says to me, "excuse me. . . are you Jewish?". . . I said, "Do I look like I'm Jewish?!". . . he says "well yeah I wouldn't have asked". . . I said, "uh. . . no. . . but I'm honored!". . . and so the running gag is (as we often find ourselves driving down Foster or Devon) that whenever I see these orthadox types on the street in front of temple I point out "look honey. . . my people. . . "
I apologize in advance if I offended anyone. . . but I'm still not quite sure what the guy in the subway station wanted from me. . .
edsg25 February 25th, 2005, 11:01 PM new york has the best bagels though hands down , theres no compotition there
WHEN THEY'RE DONE RIGHT, I ABSOLUTELY L-O-V-E CHICAGO BAGELS. KNOCK ME UPSIDE THE HEAD WITH A MATZOH BALL, IF YOU WILL, BUT I SAY CHICAGO BAGELS HOLD UP QUITE NICELY TO N.Y. OR ANYBODY ELSES BAGELS.
STICK THAT IN YOUR LOX AND SMOKE IT!
