SO143 December 19th, 2011, 06:24 PM no offend that tower looks chunky and fat although it has a nice looking spire. what's the tallest tower in milan? i personally think it needs more slimmer and taller skyscrapers in order to create a beautiful cluster.

Milan has many "slim" towers. Most of its towers have one side slimmer than the other, so they look different changing the point of view (just look at "Palazzo Lombardia" or at the famous "Pirelli Tower").
The current tallest skyscraper is 231m. Many other towers are under construction, so maybe in the future you will find some colser to your taste.

Fab87 December 19th, 2011, 09:02 PM no offend that tower looks chunky and fat although it has a nice looking spire. what's the tallest tower in milan? i personally think it needs more slimmer and taller skyscrapers in order to create a beautiful cluster.
I personally include that tower among the best looking ones in europe...it's actually not one tower, but a complex of 3 towers, "culminating" into the spire. With 231m it's the tallest building in Milan. Milan will also have taller and slimmer skyscrapers soon, take a look at the CityLife project. ;)

I love Rotterdam's skyline... It is one of my favourite in Europe, maybe it is a little underrated.
By the way Italy has at least 3 good skylines: Milan, Naples, Genoa.
TimeAndTide December 27th, 2011, 04:28 PM "No other country (in Europe) but The Netherlands, has 3 reasonable Skylines. (Only Spain perhaps? Madrid, Benidorm and Barcelona)"
That was the joke of the day.
Plus even if Rotterdam is a good skyline, I find it ugly, impersonal and sad.
Stop being ridiculous, The Hague and Amsterdam, Madrid or Barcelona have no skyline.
The real european skyline are Frankfurt, London, Paris, Rotterdam ( sorry, I find it ugly, I don't know why, but I dislike it ), Benidorm, Warsaw, Moscow. End of the list.
The rest is pure intellectual masturbation.
What ? Istambul ? Fuck yeah, Istambul, this is Asia. Certainly not Europe.

You should be more respectful of the opinions of the other people. Europe has now many nice skylines, because many cities are building a lot of highrises and skyscrapers. Then everybody has its own taste to like some skylines more than the others. Personally I prefer cities where the skyscrapers are integrated in the city itself, such as Frankfurt, Rotterdam, Milan... I don't like very much financial districts which are out of the city, like in Paris, they look to me so artificial..the soul of Paris is different from skyscrapers..
But it is just my point of view, everybody has its tastes.. I know that there are many lovers of "La Defense" here..

You are a joke. Give me a country with at least 3 skyline (european standard!) cities in the EU or even in Europe.

SASH December 27th, 2011, 05:25 PM I love Rotterdam's skyline... It is one of my favourite in Europe, maybe it is a little underrated.
By the way Italy has at least 3 good skylines: Milan, Naples, Genoa.
Milan is getting better and better :). And Naples indeed has for European standards a more than decent Skyline. At the moment probably the best in Italy.
Genoa is a very nice city but the Skyline is not worth mentioning it.

The hight oft the eaves is limited by law (22 metres) in many districts of Berlin. The city never was a city of skyscrapers and it will never be a city of skyscrapers!

Eduardo L. Ramirez December 27th, 2011, 07:37 PM In my opinion there is at least one city with a better skyline than Berlin in Germany (apart from Frankfurt): Düsseldorf. Cologne, Essen and Hamburg are more or less on par with Berlin IMO.
I agree that NL has the 3 best skyline cities of any country in Europe, followed by Spain, England (London, Liverpool, Birmingham), Germany (Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin), Ukraine (Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk), Italy (Milan, Naples, Genoa), France (Paris, Lyon, Lille) and Russia (Moscow, Ekaterinburg, St-Petersburg).
sebi94 December 27th, 2011, 08:21 PM Ok Berlin isn't a typical "skyscraper city" but Berlin has a lot of Skyscrapers about 100m, but spread about the city.In addition Berlin doesn't want to be a "skyscraper-city" ;).

Skrapebook December 28th, 2011, 02:39 PM I´m sorry but at least 75% of the skyscrapers in Netherlands are rather ugly.
Especially compared to a fantastic skyscraper city like Frankfurt...
Let´s be honest! ;)
Rotterdam Fascinates December 28th, 2011, 02:55 PM On a worldwide scale Europa does only have a couple of real skyscrapercities and does not have the need to fill it´s cities with glassy towers. I would rate Moscow, Frankfurt, London, Warsaw, Paris, Istanbul and Benidorm as cities with competitive skylines.
On the other hand you have skylines that do really add value to the existing city by good architecture, a nice location, a good program and residential appartments. This is the case in cities like Milan, Vienna, Madrid and Rotterdam. I prefer this category more than the above mentioned category 1 due to the fact that a neighborhood of office buildings is no fun to live in neither to work.
Cities like Berlin, Barcelona and Amsterdam have some buildings for decoration, but very few people would mind visiting these cities for skyscrapers and while being in these cities you will hardly notice them.
SASH December 28th, 2011, 02:56 PM @ Skrapebook
Okay I'll be honest. The Skyscrapers in F'furt are better looking. But to say that 75% in The Netherlands is ugly is bull shit! By the way, most Highrise Buildings in Rotterdam are Residential Buildings.
Stratosphere 2020 December 28th, 2011, 02:59 PM Rotterdam has some unique architecture not comparible with that of Frankfurt, London and Paris, and that is what I like.

I don't find them ugly. I think that they are very characteristis and they mix international elements with Dutch elements, and this is a good thing, we do not need "photocopy" skylines in Europe.
Then, as somebody was mentioning, many dutch high-rises are residential, and it has a huge influence.

I think that all these definitions exist just to make somehow order, but I think that the definition of skyscraper is wider... most of the high-rise buildings are considered "skyscrapers" by most of common people, without any references to definitions..
If we consider 200+m buildings as skyscrapers, should we say that only few cities such as Frankfurt, Paris, London, Milan, Warsaw and couple more have skyscrapers in the European Union? If we consider 200+m buildings as skyscrapers, should we say that only few cities such as Frankfurt, Paris, London, Milan, Warsaw and couple more have skyscrapers in the European Union?
Milan and Warsaw?
Milan has a 145 meters tall Building with a big ass Burj Khalifa look a like Spire. In my eyes this is a form of cheating! (although I quit like it)
Warsaw has besides the Palace of Culture and Science no Skyscraper. The Warsaw Trade Tower has a roof height of 187 meters. This Building has a sort of antenna ( no spire!) which makes it 207 meters.
For exemple:
The tallest building in Rotterdam is 165 meters. The name of this Building is 'Maastoren'. It has a spire which is 17,5 meters. Including this spire, the Building would be 183 meters. Believe me, no one in The Netherlands wil say: 'It is 183 meters'. We don't like to make things bigger as they are.
joshsam December 29th, 2011, 02:16 PM Milan is getting better and better :). And Naples indeed has for European standards a more than decent Skyline. At the moment probably the best in Italy.
Genoa is a very nice city but the Skyline is not worth mentioning it.
To leave genoa out I would vote for a much smaller city like Brescia.

wolkenbestormer December 29th, 2011, 02:17 PM I have to agree with Sash that it is remarkable that such a small country like The Netherlands, with only 16 mil. people has three cities within an hours drive of eachother that have some nice skylines.
Of the Dutch I like Rotterdam the best, not just because it is my town, but also because a lot of those highrises are being build for people to live in. Not just for work and to bugger off to some soulless suburban new build. People make the city, so keeping them living in the city is very important in my view.

One thing is a spire, one thing is an antenna. The spire is an an architectural element, so it counts to reach the total heigth. So i am curious to know, how tall are in your opinion the Empire State Building or the Burj Khalifa itself? The Milan's tower you are talking about is considered 231m in all the rankings because it has a spire which is the main architectural element of the building, and if you see it in real is quite impressive, belive me! The Maastoren has an antenna as the 90% of the buildings, it is obvious that it is considered 165m, if not we should add 20 meters to the 90% of the high-rises.
There are other examples of European famous buildings with the spire (Commerzbank Tower, the tallest complete building in European Union also because of the spire!)
Btw there are other towers under construction in Milan around 200m, one of them will be more than 200m for sure (in the City Life cluster). So Milan will have at least 2 "skyscrapers", Rotterdam 0
Btw, give a look at this list, the Garibaldi tower is at 8th place, Maastoren 37th :) The second taller building in Milan has more or less the same height, and 3 taller building are under construction :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_European_Union
note: there is also a list that considers the pinnacle height, the Garibaldi Tower is 8th again
Please accept the defeat
Countach December 29th, 2011, 04:09 PM ^^ btw I didn't want to make a Skyscraper Vs Skyscraper post, Sash, it is you that are always making comparisons with Rotterdam and The Hague.. Please enjoy all the skyscrapers and the skylines, it's not a competition!! (I love Rotterdam, currently my 3th favourite European skyline after Frankfurt and London)
lawine December 29th, 2011, 04:32 PM I don't mind including the spire as long as it is a reasonable integral aspect of the building, which is a pretty big stretch in the case of that garibaldi tower, where it looks like someone took a random generic building and taped a big needle to it in order to give it some "height". It's hard to be impressed by that. Spires are fine, but in this case, it's clearly a monstrosity and not at all impressive.
I'm not generally a fan of height contests anyway. While I'd love for Rotterdam to have some real 200m+ buildings, we Dutch folk are not generally the sort to build stuff for the sake of prestige/status. We build what's economically viable and makes sense. 200+ doesn't always make sense, and I'd say that many (possibly most) of the ones I see in Europe (or outside of it) are not ones that make a whole lot of sense in their given area. Having 200+ buildings makes sense in Hong Kong, not Milan or Amsterdam.

I like the first one. Btw I must say that for me the height is not very important. My favourite Italian "skyscraper" is the Pirelli Tower, completed in the 1960, which is "only" 127m tall.
Skrapebook December 29th, 2011, 04:51 PM Amsterdam has an ok skyline so far but not all that great looking unfortunately.
Rotterdam has a vast and quite an impressive skyline in size but far too many not so great looking scrapers and high rises are part of it.
Hague has suddenly become quite nice though and obviously keeps getting better as we write.
Altogether Netherlands is a truely skyscraper friendly country without a doubt.
It just needs to improve some of those not so pleasant parts of modern dutch architecture.

I agree when you say that it is important to build what is economically viable. In Italy it is the same, even because we know that we gain our status with art and classic architecture, we will never compete on a global scale with skyscrapers and we don't need to..

height matters in order to form a nice looking cluster. even 150m towers are way too short to look at especially from a distance they won't be seen thoroughly. you will see many 100m highrises all over the places when you take a dlr train to the canary wharf in london but those towers are automatically disappeared in the pictures taken from central london or st pauls cathedral. i don't know about milan or rotterdam, but a city like london needs to build towers which stand at least 230m+ or above otherwise they won't really stand out as the city is very dense, crowded and surrounded by many buildings.

I understand what you mean, Milan has a nice buisness center of the sixties, whose buildings are all around 70/80 meters tall I think, but most of them disappear in the skyline..
If a city has the sea or a river, it can help to have good points of view on the skyline to make also shortest buildings visible. In Milan they are making new parks which will have a great view on the skyline, but this view will be inside the city.

Ok, but I think that having tall buildings is not enough to make a skyline. In my opinion Moscow would need shorter buildings and a wider skyline. Look at Rotterdam, its tallest building is only 165m tall, but it really looks like a city of skyscrsapers much more than Moscow. I only like the City of Capitals (my opinion).

True, but people would say even better things to other cities if they had supertalls.
If Rotterdam had a few 300m + buildings then it would totally be placed higher than other cities above it. Like London's Shard, if it was only a mere 200m + skyscraper people wouldn't be so impressed but since it is a supertall people are "oohing and ahhing" at the Shard because of it's impressive height and because it's silhouette's generally is more massive than the other towers. (So London's skyline gets more credit ;))
So tall skyscrapers ARE a big deal for a beautiful skyline.

sebi94 January 1st, 2012, 04:06 AM Sorry, but Frankfurt is simply the best skyline of europe also without 300+ skyscrapers!
Frankfurt has a few bad angles but which city doesn't have bad angles!! so Frankfurt has a few more good angles than London, Paris, Moscow or someone else in europe!
And please do not say that The Hague or Amsterdam has a skyline, it's like Berlin, only that they are MUCH smaller. Berlin has the same problem like London. 'It's too big guys. :)

I agree. For some cities it is dufficut to find good angles, for Frankfurt it is difficult to find bad ones!
Countach January 1st, 2012, 11:20 AM True, but people would say even better things to other cities if they had supertalls.
I understand what you mean. What I mean is that having tall towers is not enough. Just look at Madrid!
SO143 January 1st, 2012, 11:22 AM happy new year guys :)

I agree with you Amsterdam doesn’t have a great skyline. You can compare it with Berlin. But the skyline of The Hague isn’t comparable with the skyline of Berlin. Berlin has a few towers. But it doesn’t make a great skyline. The Hague has also a few towers. But the towers stand together and not spread out which make it ‘more skyline’.
But I don’t want to say Berlin does not have a skyline.

leo_mp January 1st, 2012, 09:42 PM What a pity that in Italy there are good skylines Naples may be good there. I think the best skylines in Europe would be Frankfurt am Main and of course Le Defense in Paris.

CitoyenNéerlandais January 2nd, 2012, 12:08 AM Rotterdam has surely more than 16. I don’t know how many exactly because they are still building more towers higher than 100 meters. For example De Rotterdam(150m), Erasmus MC(125m) and 100Hoog(100m) are not in the list. And there are also more skyscrapers in development. But maybe someone else has more information knows the exact number?:|

Are all of these completed Skyscrapers? No Oberservation Towers, Chimneys, Cathedrals, Churches and Stadiums included? Only Skyscrapers! This is a Skyscaper Forum. London has 38 completed Skyscapers, no more no less!
SO143 January 2nd, 2012, 12:01 PM ^ great, i like that definition but i counted buildings (for eg st paul cathedral) and structures (such as london eye for eg) because of some people previously argued with me that they also impact the skyline so anything that stand above 100m should be taken into account. if you want only pure skyscrapers list that i am totally happy with that and we can now confirm that cities like berlin or stockholm etc has nothing, no skyline, no skyscrapers, no, nothing. regarding with your earlier question, the last 4 towers in that list are currently u/c that's why i put a sign like this - the reason why they are included in that list is because although are have not finished yet they already stand more than 100m and impact the skyline for eg the shard which height is already above 300m i reckon.

Well I agree that Berlin doesn't have a great skyline but "nothing, no skyline, no skyscrapers" is also not fully correct. Berlin (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Hochh%C3%A4user_in_Berlin) currently has some 11 buildings 100m+ (not including other structures), same as Cologne (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Hochh%C3%A4user_in_K%C3%B6ln).

Eduardo L. Ramirez January 2nd, 2012, 04:55 PM ^ ah shit i didn't realize that and i don't want to argue with anyone in the beginning of a new year. the truth is that london skyline is one of the best in europe and it already has the tallest skyscraper in the eu and it has about 50x buildings, structures, highrises that stand above 100m. [irrelevant mode on] it will host the world's greatest game soon and will become the only city on the globe that is qualified to host the olympic for 3 times, still the financial capital of the world and economically most powerful city on earth[/irrelevant mode off]
and happy new year guys :) all the best

Los Earth January 2nd, 2012, 09:47 PM I understand what you mean. What I mean is that having tall towers is not enough. Just look at Madrid!
What's wrong with madrid?
I think the problem with madrid is that there are not enough towers and/or
they are too far apart.
