China World Trade Center
Beijing - China

Current status: Under Construction
Construction period: 2005-2009

The China World Trade Center which will total 759,000 sm when completed will be the third and most important phase of one of the most prestigious developments in Beijing.

The mixed-use development will contain 1 super-tall tower, two office towers, a new office building adjacent to the Guo Hui entertainment tower, two apartment towers, an exhibition center, and a winter garden.

The project was won in a design competition, and the keystone of the design was the super-tall tower. The design of this tower is 81 stories and 333 meters tall, and is the result of a collaboration between SOMs architecture and structural engineering studios. The towers superstructure, which has to take into account Beijings seismic activity and high winds, is composed of structural steel with composite metal deck slabs. Diagonal mega-braces on the buildings exterior will visually underscore the strength and majesty of the tower.

This tower will contain a 5-star hotel and premium-grade corporate office space. On either side it will be flanked by a 150-meter-high office tower. Below-grade will be 4 levels 2 floors of retail and 2 floors of parking.

The construction was supose to start in 2002, and completion in 2005. But due to many poblems the construction started in late 2005, and its expected it will be completed in early 2009.

i think it was proposed when New York WTC was still there...

anyways what's the building beside it? never saw it before...and how come the phase 1 of the World Trade Centre doesnt appear in the rendering?

It should look better in real life, and this was proposed before the freedom tower so it's not a copy of it.

Its situated in Jian Guo Men Wai Avenue in Chaoyang District. Thats in the heart or the CBD area, not far away from CCTV Headquarters.

http://image2.sina.com.cn/hs/2003-11-21/3_62-3-74-712_20031121163455.jpg
In this model image of the CBD area you can see China World Trade Center (CWTC) in the upper right corner, with CCTV Headquarters just across the road.

Construction update:

The project is nearing the end of the planning phase and excavation work is due to start in mid-2004.

From ARUP (http://www.arup.com/eastasia/project.cfm?pageid=3673). So the construction started probably about a half year ago, if this article is true. If so, the construction would probably be in a early stage yet, but in the image below you can see a really tall building rising in the middel, almost exactly where CWTC is supose to be built.

http://bbs.zjw.cn/attachment/4_3313.jpg
It might be CWTC rising in the middel.

Yes, but im afraid we have to wait a lot longer before the tower is completed. Muchbetter from the China forum visited the site earlier this year or in 2004, but he didn't find any construction just bare ground. But i want to know when he was there though.

but do they need this amount of steel ?

The demand for steel in China is incredible. Here in England, people are going to extraordinary lengths to get the steel and sell it. The price they get is very low most of the time too. For example, there was a time when manhole covers in the street and roads were being stolen making it very dangerous for cars. Also, scrap cars were being taken from scrap heaps to be sold for their steel content. It is ridiculous but China is hungry for steel!

anyone else think this building is alittle bid lame looking? I mean it'll be great addition in Toronto, just to bring one more stucture into the skyline... but too boring for Beijing. Especially when it is going to be used as an iconic structure.

not every tower in a fast growing city like peking should be a "best-design" scraper....a great city also needs boxy supertalls i think

roneys_today
January 17th, 2007, 09:55 PM
yeah, i agree. there's a trend in a lot of cities to go for 'iconic' designs but without elegant buildings like this one it looks too much. i think this is a very competant, subtle design which will suit beijing nicely. i have a feeling a lot of these 'iconic' buildings will date pretty quickly.

I think they are trying to be conservative and non-flashy with this one.

Partly because this is going to be the tallest structure in Beijing, and they really want it to be ageless and non-debateable. It may not be flashy or spectacular, but nobody can say that its is bad either.

Another important factor is the fact that the government has been recently blamed for its wasteful spanding on outrigously expensive buildings in the recent years (the CCTV building almost got cancelled because of it). This is also a way of being low cost and making the general public happy.

it's all about politics....

Talking about office skyscrapers, Beijing has put much emphasis on utlra high quality, no matter how few projects they can afford because of that. They are constructing hundreds of highrise buildings anyway.

Just check these posts:

^^ World class quality, huh? You wont find many CBDs around the world with such a high level of quality and innovation. China's capital deserve quality, not quantity. Maybe Beijing hasn't a large collection of 200m+ skyscrapers (yet), but its architecture has the highest quality in China, just my opinion. Anyway, as China becomes richer and richer, Beijing's boom of masterpieces will speed up and it will get a huge skyline anyway. Not many 300m+ because of height restrictions though.

the WTC had its strucutral system lying in the facade-layer.
compared to that this building has a curtain wall just like so man others with the columns behind the facade...

so if there are similarities--what I dont see--they are only a visual thing, not structural...

I heard from Skyscraperpage.com that the height of China WTC Tower 3 is only 301 metres and 68 floors. But the actual height is 333 metres and 80 floors.

Which is the real height of the tower?
