An evocative artistic necropolis populated by statues right in the middle of a modern city, the Cimiterio Monumentale is considered both one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe and a major museum of sculpture in its own right.
The cemetery contains an astonishing array of works from a wide range of both contemporary and classical Italian sculptors. Masterpieces executed in the Realist, Symbolist and Liberty styles populate the deserted groves and eerie crypts of the graveyard - frail nymphs, playing cherubs, sombre Capucin processions and alluring angelic seductresses draped around tombstones with enigmatic frozen smiles...
The Cimitero was built between 1863 and 1866 by the architect Carlo Maciachini. The chapels, statues and crypts that fill it bear witness to more than 100 years of funerary art. Famous Italian architects and artists represented here include Luca Beltrami, Mosč Bianchi, Medardo Rosso, Vincenzo Vela, Ettore Ximenes, Adolfo Wildt, Francesco Messina, Pietro Cascella and Giacomo Manzų.
Famedio (House of Fame), a pantheon-style building where many well-known and highly regarded people are buried and numerous tombs and shrines, many of which are works of art in their own right.
