Ryan Air announces flights to Pula

http://www.vecernji-list.hr/system/galleries/pics/060222/pos-ryan-txt.jpg

Ryan Air set to start its flights from Pula Airport, in discussions Ryan Air recently had with major Croatian Airports in Zagreb, Ryan Air has shown particular interest for Pula Airport, Robert Berger a Route Director for Ryan Air has expressed very high interest for Pula Airport and promised if Ryan AIr comes it will offer flights for Stockholm, Milan and number of cities in Germany.

AN estimate of 80-100 000 passengers could be be brought to Pula by Ryan Air alone, last year Pula handled less than 250 000 passengers, this year this number is set to hit 320 000, and in 2007 500-520 000 passengers...

Dubrovnik Airlines kupuje nove avione i udvostručuje promet

EasyJet adds new routes to Morocco, Turkey and Croatia

LONDON (AFX) - easyJet PLC, Europe's second largest no frills airline, has added three new routes outside of the EU.

From this summer the Luton-based carrier will fly to Marrakech in Morocco, Istanbul (Sabiha Gokcen International Airport) in Turkey and Rijeka, Croatia's third largest city.

A daily service from London Luton to Istanbul will start on June 29, while a daily service from London Gatwick to Marrakech will commence on July 4. easyJet said it will be the first major European low fares airline to start services from London to these cities.

A four-times-a-week service from London Luton to Rijeka will start on June 30 and a four-times-a-week service from Basel, Switzerland, to Istanbul will kick off May 24.

'This is probably our most significant expansion since the start of our new routes to central and eastern Europe in May 2004,' said chief executive Andrew Harrison.

'Croatia, Turkey and Morocco are forging an ever-closer relationship with the UK and Europe. As a consequence, the demand for low-fares to these countries is growing quickly.'

New Zagreb International Terminal ....

It is now official, the plans have been released today on the all new international terminal terminal to be built in Zagreb ....

http://www.vecernji-list.hr/system/galleries/pics/060301/zag-1-txt.jpg

OK, to summarise in English, here is what will be happening at the new Zagreb International Airport .....

- Complete new terminal at Pleso on former airbase
- New terminal will be 65,000 sqm in size
- 11 airbridges
- Completion by 2011
- Cost: 212 million Euros

The new Zagreb International terminal has been designed by Ted Nasmith from Canadian architectural firm Scott Associates Architects.

Last year Pleso saw 1.6 million passengers, however it is expected that within 3 years Zagreb Airport will be processing 2 million passengers thereby making the old terminal obsolete as it is fast approaching its designed capacity.

The new terminal's design will include a retail component which includes stores, banks, cafes and restaurants.

Directly in front of the new terminal will be a new luxury hotel with direct skybridge links to the terminal (see image)

The old teminal built in 1962 which will be across the runway from the new structure will be closed once construction is finished. :)

OK, this my amateurish rendering of new proposed terminal, location and most likely how it is going to look at the end sometimes in 2011.

Terminal will have as already said 11 Passengers Boarding Bridges (PBB's) and capacity of 7.2 million passengers, number of gates will also be determined by the amount of traffic but at first it is excepted not to exceed 40.

The terminal well have plenty of space for expansion and by 2020 sections will be added to cope with greater capacity.

Projected traffic at Zagreb airport is set to hit, 2 million+ with in next 2 years, (2007) and old terminal will need to cope with even greater traffic which is set to hit 3 million by 2010,.

Zagreb new Airport Terminal has been in planning for very long time, in 1990, when new terminal was originally proposed as Zagreb Airport was hitting its maximum capacity of 2 million... New terminal was delayed many times, first by war in Croatia (1991-1995), than by corruption and Tudjman's mess (1996-1999), and finally by incompetence on all sides...

New Terminal is has now finally got go-ahead and it is very likely when construction starts next or following year it will be end of the story of this very long saga...

http://www.vecernji-list.hr/system/galleries/pics/060301/zag-1-txt.jpg
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2686/zagrebairportnewdeal9fe.jpg

New Terminal has impressive dimensions, it is 65 000sqm in size about same size as Prague's airport, of which 57 000sqm are in terminal it self and arms which are 580m long will add additional 8000sqm, giving total of 65000sqm...

Zagreb terminal is set to be largest n what was former Yugoslavia and generally among largest in Central Europe, only one in Warsaw and Prague being larger...

Old terminal is set to be demolished in 2012 to allow for future expansion or other needs...

Mic, I have to correct you on this one!

Check out this new master plan:
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/9253/dsc014514hg.jpg

If you take into acount that that widebody on the far right has a wingspan of 60m, you cam mesure everything!

The arms have span of 470m (it will be 650m in the final development stage).
The terminal itselfe is between 150m and 185m wide.
Lenght of the terminal from the apron to the main entrance is 95m.

More clear renderings:

One more thing.

I can t belive you got sooooooo sloppy!

You missed the orientation of the terminal by miles!

Here is the real thing (in stages):

I made some, more accurate messurements!
These have 2m +/- offset.
Here:
--span of the "arms": 525m (725m in the final stage)
--main section: 170m on the narrow, and 208m on the wide part
--longitudinal (from the apron to the front entrance):108m
--the hotel is 91m wide on the front, and 120m on the back, it s 62m "deep".

OK, some great news,

Delta Airlines (USA) and Emirates of UAE, are in discussion as to start of flights to Zagreb Airport, Emirates would offer Direct flights via Dubai to Australia where some 500-550 000 Croats live and twice weekly service would be lunched sometimes in late 2006, Emirates is one of the largest Airlines in ME and also one of the best airlines from ME region, it is trying to build major hub around Dubai.

Malaysian Airlines is another potential returnee in 2007, its service via Kuala Lumpur to Australia where very popular with Croatian Émigré, and when route was scraped in late 2001, many Croats from Australia had to use often difficult alternatives, either via Rome with AllItalia (no longer flies to Australia stopped in late 2004) or Virgin, BA or Qantas via London or Frankfurt...

With Emirates opting for direct flights via Dubai Croats once again would have options of Direct flights, Malaysian Airlines if it returns would offer great choice of direct flights to Zagreb via Kula Lumpur or Dubai...

Delta Airlines has also spring in to motion after seeing 2 other NA airlines have started direct flights to Zagreb, success of the routes, Toronto -Zagreb and New York Zagreb were main reason why Delta has opted to enquire about possibility of such flights, details still need to be resolved but it is very likely Delta will offer direct flights to Zagreb via New York and LA starting either late in 2006 (October or November) or early 2007.

Since the Open Skies agreement no less than 12 airlines have announced plans to start flights to Zagreb, at the beginning of 2005 only 15 Airlines flew to Zagreb, it is looking very likely number of airlines servicing Zagreb airport could double and could reach 30 by the years end...

Air Canada (Best NA Airline) in late 80's and 1990 had extremely successful Zagreb route, hope is if Delta arrives this might prompt them to re-consider of re-opening this once very successful route..

If this where to happened Zagreb would be served by no les than 4 airlines from NA continent in early 2007...
Air Canada has no plans for Zagreb and this was as of October last year...

if current 45m runways is good for them than it is good for most other aircrafts, 4000x55m will most likely be next runway at Zagreb Airport, it would allow for A380 landing, but I strongly doubt Zagreb will witness A380 any time soon, few cities in the World, will; London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Amsterdam, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai, Chicago and Osaka are only cities that might see A380 aircraft before the end of this decade...

This has given me a though....what kind of plane would airlines serving long haul routes then use for Zagreb flights...I am thinking of when Emirates starts their service, or if Malaysian,Delta etc start their own as well....im only thinking this because Emirates has an order of 45 A380s, and if they had a Zagreb-Dubai-Sydney route....an A380 could be a possible option in the future, of course only after Emirates recieves their A380s.....and if Zagreb gets a new 55m wide runway..

What other airlines fly to Zagreb from NA?...I kno Skyservice has cut its Zagreb-Toronto route

North American Airlines is one of the airlines starting New York Zagreb - New York route twice or trice a week not 100% sure could be in May or June... :)

Delta as I said should start either this year or very early next year, as you know airline is going through restructure. Considering 2.5 million Croats (1st, 2,nd, 3rd and 4th generation) who live in US, many will se this as an opportunity to visit Croatia, also large number of American visitors I except around 300 000 in 2007 should warrant 7 day service from New York and L.A... calculate, 300 000/365 = 824 tourist a day, this would warrant for at least 2-3 wide body aircraft, B777 or A340 or 2 B747 400... :)

But I think we'll need to wait for the route to develop strongly and if HTZ pricks start advertising Croatia in USA, if they don't I'd have them all fired for incompetence and corruption... :D

I think by 2008 few more NA airlines should, also start the repute, perhaps Air Canada, only if my positive projections come to fruition... :)

I think Croatia can attract 550 000 US nationals and about 150 000 Canadians annually by the decade's end, this would warrant at least 3-4 major airlines flying to Zagreb from US on daily basis... 700 000/364 = 1923 tourist/visitors a day = 6 B777 300 landings on daily basis... :) Again I'm being optimistic... :)

I am 100% cretin A380's won't be serving Zagreb Airport, simply capacity is an issue, most likely aircrafts like A330 or B777 of all airlines mentioned would be used on Zagreb route, even B767 300ER... Don't forget many still use Lufthansa, KLM, SAS, Air France, Austrian, All Italia, for their flights to Zagreb, Iberia and BA which also have long term plans for Zagreb might also get piece of cake, BA especially with New Yorkers and Californians, BA's reputations in USA is unmatched by any of the airlines there, TAP has also started flight to Zagreb and they can tap in to untapped :D market of South America, especially Brazil and Argentina where TAP flies and competes with Iberia...

Long term prospects for Zagreb are unmatched in region what was once Yugoslavia, and I am quite confident in my statements, from past 6-7 months one can see how well Zagreb will do in medium to long term, Ljubljana, Split, Dubrovnik will also do very well, without the doubt all major airports in the region will see significant growth in passenger numbers...

2. travnja - Nacionalna zrakoplovna tvrtka Croatia Airlines prolazi kroz teško razdoblje. Direktor Ivan Mišetić glavni uzrok negativnog poslovanja pripisuje rastu cijena goriva i poplavi niskotarifnih prijevoznika.

Seems like a good deal, but is Dubrovnik Airline just going to keep flying charter operations, looks like they dont have many other plans...

For DA it is best deal they can get, for 2 million they get an aircraft which they can use for at least 25000-30000 flying hours, before new aircraft can be obtained, by this time they might accumulate enough money for brand new aircraft with about 15-20 years of service remaining...

As to A380, each aircraft has capacity of 555 passengers, 3 Class configuration, A daily flight to Zagreb or even 3tice a week at this point would be something way to expensive with such aircraft..

OK, bit of updates on Zagreb Airport,

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9330/zlz3io.jpg

I wanted to share few plans I just laid my hands on and to give you more inkling what is happening with the project... As you can see from the plans new terminal is going to on 3 levels, consist of 4* Deluxe Hotel and underground car parking for about 3000 cars, having in mind future expansion this number will go up...

Current Runway will be resurfaced early next year and extended by additional 700m giving the length of runway some 4000m. This is estimate to cost in region of 5 million Euro for which money will come from City, Government and Local Authority.

New terminal construction should start as soon as finances are in place atm, government and city will contribute with half of 212€ million cost, rest of funds Airport needs to raise them selves, additional 7% have already been secured from Velika Gorica and County founds but remaining 43% or 92€ million needs to be raised from some other sources...

Managing Director of Zagreb airport has spent last few months globetrotting tiring to raise additional funds for the Airport, EU might step in with 53€ million, but rest of the funds some 39€ million Airport has to rise itself and this is proving difficult. Airport could raise capital by borrowing funds from local banks whish offer very competitive rates (4-6% PA) but i think this would be last option for Mr. Bosko Matkovic (director of Zagreb Airport).

I can also report land issues has been successfully resolved and formerly Airforce land has now its new owner, City of Zagreb and Zagreb Airport, 240 hectares formerly AF land has been transferred to Airport Zagreb and for the needs of future airport terminal, and we have final numbers as to expenses and what will be built on newly acquired land...

Cost of Cnstructon,.,,

Apron - 21€ million (about 105 000sqm of new Apron)
Additional access roads, runway extension and civil utilities - 32€ million
Passenger Terminal - 158€ million

212€ million total
+
42.7€ million - 4* Deluxe Hotel 250 rooms,
24.2€ million - Underground garage for 3000 cars
5.7€ million - New administrative Building for the Airport
8.5€ million - New ATC
25.2 million for 2nd Runway taxiways and access roads. (after 2010)

Overall total cost of new Airport - 318.3€ million

Croatia Airlines May Cease Operations

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13:34 - 27 April 2006 - The executive director of low-budget airliner Wizz Air Jozsef Varadi said that air traffic market consolidation would happen soon in the region of central Europe, Croatia Today reports.

He said that among low-cost carriers operating in the region, only one would survive, alongside Ryanair claiming that euphoria after EU expansion in 2004 decreased, while adding that many carriers were forced to reduce operations.
He also said that the market is currently overcrowded and only Wizz Air or the company's main regional competitor Sky Europe would survive.

He added that consolidation would mainly concentrate on regular airliners, estimating that even small national flag carriers would have difficulties surviving the deregulation and EU air traffic liberalisation, including the Croatian national air carrier.

"In three to five years I think you will be witnessing disappearance of many carriers, such are Hungary's Malev, Croatia Airlines or Bulgaria Air," claimed Varadi.

Rising crude oil prices of over $70/barrel would speed up this consolidation and that many carriers would not be able to transfer such increased costs to passengers, he added.

You've been talking about croatian air force before on this thread so this shouldn't be too off topic.

I simply must point out a couple of things:

Czech republic signed a leasing contract which runs for ten years to 30 September 2015, provides for 21,000 flying hours and sets guarantees with regard to operational ready rates. The fixed price of 19,650 billion Czech korun (Euro645.13 million), which is to be paid in ten annual instalments, does not of course include either fuel or weapon systems. Pricetag does include training of pilots and ground crews in Sweden, building of necesarry infrastructure, etc. Weapon systems prices are likely to add another 50-100 million euros.

To better illustrate, hungary has ordered 40 amraams for their gripens, a deal which cost them 19 million euros. Similarly to czechs, hungary has paid handsomly for their gripens, too, some 170 million forints which would be around 690 milllion euros. Difference in price is due to offset programs of various companies investing in country which does the purchase, which seems to be the way of doing business nowadays.

Price of recently ordered f16s for poland and greece are also comparable. So, to make long story short - I would seriously doubt croatia can afford even 12 brand new fighters, let alone 24. Most realistic way seems to be used fighters, and if that turns out to be the case, Sweden is again looking good, as it seems they will be retiring some of their 'old' gripen A/B models - lots of life in those airframes left, still vastly superior to mig21s and comparable to to all but most modern f16s tech wise.

As far as helicopters go, mi24 are not airworthy and there are no plans to modernize them. It's very likely they will be scrapped. 8 mi-8 have been modernised in 2003 and 10 more are planned to undergo major overhauls during this year. I guess that means the russian debt mi-17s wont be coming any time soon.

To get more on topic - second runway for zagreb airport is absolutely not needed. No matter what EU recommends, there are numerous examples of airports with far greater number of air operations per year that feature just one runway. While i do agree it'd be wise to purchase lands where some day in the far future that second runway might be built, for the next 15-20 years i think it's very doubtful that zagreb would need another runway. If properly reconstructed, with well poisitioned taxiways and access points, a single runway can provide for 80 operations per hour.

Ballota

^^ But this is not about the trafic! 2nd rwy is needed for safety also. In Zagreb you have heavy snow and fog. When a blizzard hits you must close one rwy for cleaning, while the other one is active. This hapens fearly often in Zagreb. They close the apt for some half an hour, and all plaines (on landing) have to wait in the air for the cleaning to be done. Not to menion some minor accidents (like tire blowup) that close the apt for hours, until the plane can be towed to the hangar.

That is all nice and dandy and good to have if you can afford it. Not in the absolute terms of course but in the cost effectiveness terms. And right now, with the amount of money going for the terminal itself, i doubt there'll be any money for the second runway anytime soon.

With proper hauling equipment the blown tire issue can be remedied fairly quickly and free up the runway. As for blizzards, if its a really heavy blizzard then there won't be any flights anyway, no matter how many runways you have. And if its weak enough for landings to take place, cleaning crews would most likely be able to deal with new snow between the air operations. One has to keep in mind it'd be winter, not exactly the busiest season for zg airport. Of course, as traffic does increase, it will be harder and harder to pull that off, and perhaps there will be 5 min waits, then 10 min waits, etc... but money lost from those compared to money needed to build and maintain new runway would still be just a small fraction of the latter, even throughout the years.

Realistically, i don't think zg airport needs nor will it get another runway before 2020 at the earliest.

Totoro, you point about Gripen's is valid, but entirely true, Czech Republic and Hungary did sign offset deal, they had a choice of not to, cost of single Gripen including weapons systems and training is only 27.7 million U$. If Croatia buys the system s outright it can dispense with the corporate bs,

BTW Offset deals are common nowadays, but it is highly unlikely Croatia will agree on this deal, outright deal for 12 New grips at cost of 350 million U$ will be made once Croatia deems new aircrafts are necessary.

Hungary is fine example of how bad offset deals can be when seller does not stick to the agreed, and when promised investment bring no join or value for money spent on procurement of aircrafts...

As to 2nd runway, it is all relative, cost of 2nd runway is 20€ million, right now Airport hasn't got this funds and therefore it is unlikely 2nd runway will be built anytime soon, but after 2010, 2nd runway will be imperative if nothing but due to the cost of not building 2nd runway...

There is a vast difference between the so-called "fly away" price of an aircraft on the one hand, and a package cost. The former is the aircraft "as is", with no spare engines or other spares, no engine test beds or avionics test benches, no specialised ground support equipment, no pilot training simulators, no pilot training and no ground crew and technical personnel training, and no support to the local industry to prepare to support the aircraft through a service life of 20 to 30 years. The latter will include all of those things. The difference can be as much as 100% or even more in some cases. I say 27 million is at best the fly away price, you say it's full price including even weapons. I say true price croatia would pay for getting a gripen to be operational is close to 60 million dollars. South africa bought 28 new gripens, with small offset deal, they payed 65 million dollars per plane and several articles concerning the deal said the price without offset deals amounts to 57 million.

I guess we can only agree to disagree here.

As for 2nd runway at zagreb airport, we're pretty much agreeing it's gonna be needed one day. It is just my opinion that, according to projected traffic increase rate, the losses of not having another runway will not overtake the gains of not spending for its construction before 2020, at the earliest.

OK, just got few pisc and architectural designs for Dubrovnik Airport ands what is going to look like after modernisation in 2009. You can clearly see where new terminal extension is going to be and 4 PBB's, once the capacity is reached terminal will get enlarged again to accommodate 4 more PBB's and capacity increase to 8 million passengers a year...

Has anyone heard about plans to start services between Belgrade and Pula. The director of Pula airport signed some aviation agreement but I don’t know which airline. Probably Jat or Centavia.

eh, the picture next to the door looks out of place. if they could somewhat incorporate it so that it "flows" from the tail instead of having a multi-colored picture right next to a completely white body, it would be a lot better.
