View Full Version : How About F1 Racing for Miami ? Dale February 16th, 2005, 08:07 PM As an emerging, truly global city - and with all the Latin and European transplants - wouldn't Miami be the logical choice for F1 racing ? Has there been any talk on the subject ? aperez49 February 16th, 2005, 09:58 PM As an avid F1 fan, it'd be hard to get in on the schedule..especially since most of the new tracks are gorgeous state of the art facilities and I doubt Miami would put up that money already having the Homestead track, and while its a nice infield section and all...I don't think it matches up with the new facilities. Unless we could steal the US Grand Prix from Indy (doubtful), I think the closest option would be if they completely remodeled Sebring (since it did at one point host F1) and even then...it'd be a huge stretch. If you had a downtown circuit in mind...I again doubt it as it seems F1 is really trying to move away form the tighter venues which don't allow ofr as much passing. However, and interesting thing would be if the new F1 style racing that is being headed by BMW, Mercedes and a couple of the other F1 teams (can't think of the name now.) if this league starts up in the next couple of years maybe we could get them to come down here... I love racing (real racing, not Nascar) and would love to get some more high-profile races down here. Dale February 16th, 2005, 10:13 PM Well, I might argue your point on Nascar (F1 is currently more like a high speed procession than a race), I think it would be great to have all forms of racing in the area. Did not know that Sebring hosted F1. And I imagine that you're right about the possible F1 spinoff, that Miami would be a strong contender. aperez49 February 16th, 2005, 10:27 PM Sorry, didn't mean to bash Nascar (at least not too muc..lol) ..I used to like it..but I just got more into the road racing and find it kid of boring to watch cars just turn left all the time, and now with all the restrictions and limitations they basically want every car on each others bumper and as many crashes as possible, I do like the playoff sort of thing they've done now. I understand your point on F1 beeing a procession, but as the teams that now have money to burn (Honda and Toyota and Mercedes and BMW) get more and more into it...they will get close and closer. This season brings a lot of changes for some of the teams so there should be some interesting developments. I really like to watch Road Racing though..mostly ALMS and the 12 and 24 hour races at Daytona and Le Mans (i WILL go to this race someday..) As far as Sebring having hosted F1 I think it was in the late 50's or early 60's...but only for like 1 year maybe two. I think what would be cool was if they got the US Grandprix to change tracks every year. There are many very cool tracks in the US, such as Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, Sebring, and many more...it'd be cool if they selected like 5 or 6 tracks and just rotate. For now, we have to hope that the new league will sprout and miami can be selected as a host city. Dale February 16th, 2005, 10:44 PM Speaking of Le Mans, were you as sad as I was when they installed the kinks in the Mulsanne Straight ? Sure, I can appreciate the safety issue, but it was crazy to see those prototypes hitting speeds in excess of 250 mph just before they had to apply the brakes ! aperez49 February 16th, 2005, 10:59 PM yeah it was sad.... it was absolutely INSANE to see those cars and then realize....cr@p..they are going 250+ I can only imagine being there...it must be quite the experience. brickell February 17th, 2005, 05:42 AM excuse my motoring ignorance, but is F1 different than the IRL races they ran downtown and now at Homestead? Also, don't a lot of these guys live in Miami? Dale February 17th, 2005, 05:55 AM Yes, they are open-wheel racers that look a bit like the IRL cars except that they are much more exotic and much, much more expensive. The cars are lighter than IRL *and* more powerful. They pump out about 850 hp, rev up to 19,000 RPM (!), and the brakes are so powerful that the driver can experience up to 6 G's force ! They typically race on curvy courses and they don't allow passing (okay, that last bit was just to annoy aperez49, lol !). And F1 racing is enormously popular everywhere except America. Roark February 23rd, 2005, 01:50 AM excuse my motoring ignorance, but is F1 different than the IRL races they ran downtown and now at Homestead? Also, don't a lot of these guys live in Miami?Juan Pablo Montoya lives in Jade Residences at Brickell Bay. He likes the Luis Revuelta "generic" architecture. (that last bit was just because I'm still annoyed! :) ) nimbyhater February 23rd, 2005, 01:58 AM hey, bring more international promience to miami, all for F1 racing coming, and miami will have a better market for it an almost anywhere else in the US, i have a few friends that are really into it, along with a friend whos cousin is an F1 racer in Spain, supposedly famous, ill try and get his name... |
