BTW Lesvos, like most Northeastern Aegean islands, was under Genoese (not Venetian) rule during the medieval period. Catalan sailors (mercenaries) also occasionally used Lesvos as a base (Lesvos is the only island in the world with 2 lagoons, offering great hideout possibilities for both pirates and navies alike, throughout history)

I have probably mentioned before that my grandfather went to high school in Lesvos while his family remained in Ayvalik.

lesvow had (and probably has) a high school comparable to Athens University in size at the time. It is considered to be one of the places of Greek aristocracy along with Asia Minor (the west coast of Turkey) and Istanbul, Zante (Zakynthos), Corfu, and places in Crete amongst others.

I really never liked Myconos and the rest of the nouveau-riche paradises of the Aegean. Islands like Lesvos, Thasos, Skiathos, Corfu, Zante, besides being still green, they have hidden qualities discovered only by those with the selective receptivity to observe them.

Lesbos the third largest Greek island and the seventh largest in the Mediterranean is located in the North-Eastern Aegean. It has an area of 1630 km² (630 square miles) with 320 kilometres (230 miles) of coastline. Its population is approximately 90,000 about a third of which live in the capital city, Mytilene, located in the southeastern part of the island. The remaining population is distributed in smaller towns and villages.

Lesbos is the birthplace of several famous persons. In archaic times, Arion developed the type of poem called dithyramb, the progenitor of tragedy, Terpander invented the seven note musical scale for the lyre, followed by the lyric poet Alcaeus, and the most famous poetess Sappho. Phanias wrote history. The seminal artistic creativity of those times brings to mind the myth of Orpheus to whom Apollo gave a lyre and the Muses taught to play and sing. When Orpheus incurred the wrath of the god Dionysus, he was dismembered by the Maenads and of his body parts his head and his lyre found their way to Lesbos where they have "remained" ever since. Pittacus was one of the Seven Sages of Greece. In classical times Hellanicus advanced historiography, Theophrastus, the father of botany, succeeded Aristotle as the head of the Lyceum. Aristotle and Epicurus lived there for some time. In later times lived Theophanes, the historian of Pompey's campaigns, Longus wrote the famous novel Daphnis and Chloe, and much later the historian Doukas wrote the history of the early Ottoman Turks. In modern times the poet Odysseus Elytis, descendant of an old family of Lesbos received the Nobel Prize and the renowned artist Theofilos also hails from the island.

I recommend the beach of Tzonia through the village of Kliou, my farthers village, to me the best beach in the world. Me and my cousins just sit and drink ouzo and eat all day long. I breath for this island.

Pigadakia - the fishing port / limanaki of Kato Tritos, a small village on Kolpo (Gulf of) Geras, only 15 minutes drive form Mytilini directly across the Kolpo Geras. To the right you can see the chimney stack in the fishing area called Dipi / Ntipi.

Καλά πανέμορφα?? Δυστυχώς δεν έχω πάει Μυτιλήνη ακόμα αλλά αυτός είναι ένας από τους πολλούς λόγους που θέλω να το κάνω... Θυμάμαι ο Μαμαλάκης στο Μπουκιά και Συχώριο είχε δείξει πολλά από αυτά και είχε εξηγήσει γιατί υπάρχουν τόσα κτλ αλλά δεν θυμάμαι και πολλά... :)

Πάντως το ξενοδοχείο Second Empire είναι ένα θαύμα... Πολύ όμορφο..

Ελληνοτουρκική συνεργασία στη Μυτιλήνη

Folli Follie και Setur Servis Turistik κέρδισαν τον διεθνή διαγωνισμό για τη μαρίνα του νησιού.

Το σχέδιο

Η σχέση των ομίλων Folli Follie και KOC ξεκίνησε όταν βρέθηκαν αντιμέτωποι το 2006 διεκδικώντας την εκμετάλλευση των Καταστημάτων Αφορολογήτων Ειδών σε έξι σημεία εισόδου-εξόδου στην Τουρκία για 15 έτη σε διαγωνισμό που προκήρυξε το τουρκικό Δημόσιο. Το έργο τελικά κέρδισε η SETUR και έκτοτε ξεκίνησε ο διάλογος για μεταξύ τους συνεργασία.
Με την ανάληψη της διαχείρισης της μαρίνας Μυτιλήνης σκοπός της κοινοπραξίας είναι η ανάπτυξη του νησιού ως προορισμού για σκάφη αναψυχής και κατ' επέκταση της Μυτιλήνης γενικότερα ως τουριστικού προορισμού. Η μαρίνα Μυτιλήνης βρίσκεται στην περιοχή Μακρύς Γιαλός του Δήμου Μυτιλήνης, στις νοτιοανατολικές ακτές της Λέσβου. Η απόσταση της μαρίνας από την κεντρική προκυμαία της πόλης είναι μικρότερη του 1 χλμ., ενώ από το αεροδρόμιο απέχει λιγότερο από 7 χλμ. Η θαλάσσια ζώνη περιλαμβάνει εσωτερικό και εξωτερικό λιμένα, ενώ η χερσαία ζώνη του λιμένα έχει συνολικό εμβαδόν 37.500 τ.μ. περίπου. Η δυναμικότητά της ανέρχεται σε 252 θέσεις ελλιμενισμού, από τις οποίες 222 στον θαλάσσιο χώρο σε ανάλογες θέσεις, στις προβλήτες και στα κρηπιδώματα και 30 στον χερσαίο χώρο.

Επισκέφτηκα την συγκεκριμένη μαρίνα πέρυσι και ομόλογο ότι εντυπωσιάστηκα. Μια μαρίνα σύχρονοι, καθαρή και σε καλή τοποθεσία αλλα χωρίς ιδίατερη κίνηση. Eλπίζω η κοινοπραξία Setur/Folli Follie να πετύχει στον στόχο που έβαλε.

Πολύ ωραίες μαρίνες και οι δύο. Είναι κρίμα που εκείνη της Μυτιλήνης δεν πολυέχει κίνηση.

Σε ελληνοτουρκικά χέρια από σήμερα η Μαρίνα Μυτιλήνης!


Στην επενδυτική πρόταση της κοινοπραξίας περιλαμβάνεται η υλοποίηση και μιας σειράς έργων στον χερσαίο χώρο της μαρίνας ενδεικτικού προϋπολογισμού ύψους περίπου 630.000 ευρώ. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες στην πρόταση μεταξύ άλλων προβλέπεται η λειτουργία σε συγκεκριμένους χώρους εμπορικών καταστημάτων, εστιατορίου, αναψυκτηρίου, γραφείου ΕΟΤ ή ΕΛΤΑ, σημείου πρώτων βοηθειών, υπηρεσιών διοίκησης, λιμεναρχείου και τελωνείου. Επίσης, προβλέπεται η λειτουργία κατασκευής σταθμού ανεφοδιασμού καυσίμων, μονάδας τεχνικής υποστήριξης σκαφών χερσαίου χώρου, απόθεσης σκαφών και η τοποθέτηση συστήματος αγκυροβολίας.

Λέσβος: 233% η αύξηση Τούρκων τουριστών τον Ιούνιο σε σχέση με πέρυσι

Κατά 61% αυξήθηκαν οι αφίξεις τουριστών από την Τουρκία στη Λέσβο το πρώτο εξάμηνο του 2012, σε σύγκριση με την αντίστοιχη περσινή περίοδο, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της Γενικής Αστυνομικής Διεύθυνσης Βορείου Αιγαίου. Το πρώτο εξάμηνο του 2011 είχαν φθάσει στο νησί 2.605 Τούρκοι τουρίστες, όταν μόνο το φετινό Ιούνιο οι αφίξεις ανήλθαν στις 2.601 και συνολικά το εξάμηνο σε 4.194. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι από τις 2.601 αφίξεις του Ιουνίου, οι 2.452 έγιναν με τα επιβατηγά πλοία που δραστηριοποιούνται στις γραμμές Μυτιλήνης - Αϊβαλιού, και 149 έγιναν με θαλαμηγούς. Αν συγκρίνουμε τις αφίξεις του περσινού Ιουνίου με τον αντίστοιχο φετινό μήνα, βλέπουμε ότι έχουμε μια αλματώδη αύξηση από τα 1.166 άτομα, στα 2.601 άτομα, ή σε ποσοστό 223%!

Παντού Τούρκοι!

Τα παραπάνω εντυπωσιακά ποσοστά στην καθημερινότητα της Μυτιλήνης, του Μολύβου, της Αγιάσου, της Πέτρας και των άλλων χωριών του νησιού, γίνονται φανερά με την κυριαρχία των Τούρκων τουριστών έναντι των τουριστών οποιασδήποτε άλλης εθνικότητας. Οι ταμπέλες των καταστημάτων στα τουρκικά τείνουν να αντικαταστήσουν όλες τις ταμπέλες που στα προηγούμενα χρόνια ήταν στα αγγλικά.

Δεν μπορούμε, ωστόσο, να γνωρίζουμε από τώρα εάν θα έχουμε μια τόσο εντυπωσιακή αύξηση των αφίξεων από την Τουρκία στο σύνολο του έτους κι είναι πρόωρο να κάνουμε προγνώσεις, διότι όπως φαίνεται στον πίνακα που δημοσιεύουμε στο σημερινό μας φύλλο, ο κύριος όγκος των αφίξεων πραγματοποιείται τους μήνες Ιούλιο, Αύγουστο και Σεπτέμβριο.

Πέρυσι, την πρώτη ολοκληρωμένη χρονιά αφίξεων Τούρκων τουριστών, είχαμε 2.605 αφίξεις το πρώτο εξάμηνο, ενώ το δεύτερο εξάμηνο είχαμε 12.208 αφίξεις. Πάντως, είναι φανερό πως υπάρχει μια σαφής τάση ανόδου των αφίξεων, η οποία ευνοείται και από τις προσπάθειες να αντιμετωπισθούν τα προβλήματα που δημιουργεί η υποχρέωση έκδοσης βίζας και μάλιστα με σημαντικό κόστος για τους Τούρκους που θέλουν να επισκεφθούν τα νησιά μας.

Αν διατηρηθεί ο ρυθμός αύξησης των αφίξεων του πρώτο εξαμήνου και τον υπόλοιπο χρόνο, τότε οι Τούρκοι επισκέπτες στη Λέσβο θα ξεπεράσουν κατά πολύ τους 20.000 τη φετινή χρονιά.

Η έναρξη της λειτουργίας της μαρίνας Μυτιλήνης - έστω και στα μέσα του καλοκαιριού - στα πλαίσια ενός επιχειρηματικού σχήματος που διαχειρίζεται σημαντικό αριθμό μαρινών στα τουρκικά παράλια, δημιουργεί νέες προοπτικές για τη φετινή χρονιά, κυρίως όμως για το επόμενο έτος. Η πόλη της Μυτιλήνης θα προσελκύσει πολύ μεγαλύτερο αριθμό θαλαμηγών και ένα σημαντικό αριθμό επισκεπτών υψηλού εισοδήματος και μεγάλης κατά κεφαλήν δαπάνης.

Μάχη επιβίωσης για τις τουριστικές επιχειρήσεις
30% κάτω ο τζίρος του Ιουνίου

Σε 30% με 50% ανέρχεται η μείωση του τζίρου στις επιχειρήσεις του τουριστικού τομέα της Λέσβου. Αυτό δείχνουν τα στοιχεία τού ρεπορτάζ που κάναμε τις προηγούμενες ημέρες. Τη Δευτέρα πρόκειται να ανακοινωθούν τα στατιστικά στοιχεία για τις αφίξεις τουριστών στη Λέσβο με πτήσεις τσάρτερ, τα οποία αναμένεται να δείξουν πτώση και γι' αυτόν το μήνα, από τη στιγμή που έχουμε μείωση στον αριθμό των αεροσκαφών που προσεγγίζουν το αεροδρόμιο της Μυτιλήνης. Με ρυθμό 20% και πάνω υποχωρούν οι αφίξεις από τους Έλληνες τουρίστες, παρά την ενίσχυση των ακτοπλοϊκών συνδέσεων με τη βόρεια Ελλάδα.

Σε ποσοστό 30% εκτιμά την πτώση του τζίρου στα καταστήματα της Πέτρας για το φετινό Ιούνιο ο έμπορος Λευτέρης Χαβός. Σε ορισμένες επιχειρήσεις η πτώση του τζίρου είναι ακόμη μεγαλύτερη, ενώ για τον Ιούλιο πιστεύει πως θα πάρει κι άλλες διαστάσεις, εκτιμώντας ότι θα φθάσει στο 50%, καθώς έχει γίνει πολύ άσχημο ξεκίνημα.

Μεγάλο πλήγμα για τον τουρισμό της βόρειας Λέσβου αποτελεί η απώλεια των τουριστών της Νορβηγίας, όπως σημειώνει ο κ. Χαβός. «Οι Νορβηγοί είναι τουρίστες που καταναλώνουν πολύ. Ένας Νορβηγός τουρίστας δαπανά όσα χρήματα δαπανούν οι 10 Άγγλοι. Πέρα από τους Νορβηγούς, οι παραδοσιακοί επισκέπτες της Λέσβου, οι Ολλανδοί, είχαν μειωμένο αριθμό αφίξεων το φετινό Ιούνη. Οι Τσέχοι τουρίστες που έρχονται στη Λέσβο, είναι φανερό ότι δεν έχουν το εισόδημα που απαιτείται για να ξοδέψουν χρήματα στις διακοπές τους. Όσο για τους Τούρκους, ξοδεύουν μόνο για φαγητό και αγοράζουν πολύ περιορισμένο αριθμό προϊόντων, όπως είναι ούζο και μαστίχα. Γενικά μπορούμε να πούμε ότι οι εθνικότητες των τουριστών που επισκέπτονται το νησί μας, δείχνουν ότι δεν έχουν εισόδημα για να δαπανήσουν στις διακοπές τους ή κι αν έχουν, δεν το ξοδεύουν εδώ».

Η εικόνα στην αγορά της Πέτρας είναι απογοητευτική. Υπάρχουν μαγαζιά που άνοιξαν και έκλεισαν είτε μέσα στον Ιούνιο είτε τις πρώτες ημέρες του Ιουλίου. «Είναι πρώτη φορά που συμβαίνει αυτό», σημειώνει ο κ. Χαβός. Στο παρελθόν αυτό που συνέβαινε, ήταν τα καταστήματα που δεν πήγαιναν καλά, να κλείνουν μετά το πρώτο 15νθήμερο του Σεπτεμβρίου. Δηλαδή περίμεναν να εισπράξουν ό,τι μπορούσαν κατά τη διάρκεια του Ιουλίου και του Αυγούστου, τους μήνες που έτσι κι αλλιώς υπάρχει αυξημένη κίνηση.

Στο Μόλυβο...

Με δραματικούς τόνους περιγράφει την κατάσταση και ο Νίκος Μόλβαλης, πρόεδρος του Φορέα Τουρισμού Μήθυμνας. Εκτιμά πως ο τζίρος των τουριστικών επιχειρήσεων της περιοχής υποχώρησε κατά 35% - 40% τον Ιούνιο. Στα ίδια επίπεδα εκτιμά πως θα κινηθεί και το πρώτο 15νθήμερο του Ιουλίου. Αιτίες γι' αυτή την εξέλιξη είναι η απώλεια σημαντικών τουριστικών αγορών, όπως είναι η Νορβηγία και tour operators όπως η First Choose. Ζημία κάνει και η γενικότερη πολιτική κατάσταση στην Ευρώπη, που δημιουργεί κλίμα ανασφάλειας σε όλους τους Ευρωπαίους. Μικρή αρνητική επίδραση θεωρεί ότι είχαν οι ποδοσφαιρικοί αγώνες.

Από εκεί και πέρα, ως πρόβλημα καταγράφει τις λίγες ημέρες παρουσίας των Τούρκων τουριστών στο νησί, που μειώνει το ειδικό βάρος στο συνολικό τζίρο των τουριστικών επιχειρήσεων. Μεγάλο πλήγμα θεωρεί δε, τις απώλειες από τον εσωτερικό τουρισμό. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η φράση που χρησιμοποίησε ο κ. Μόλβαλης, «οι Έλληνες σχεδόν έχουν εξαφανιστεί».

Αυτή την περίοδο, τα μαγαζιά του Μολύβου δουλεύουν κυρίως με τουρίστες από την Ολλανδία, λιγότερο με Άγγλους και πολύ λιγότερο με Βέλγους και Γερμανούς. Κρίσιμος μήνας από τις επιχειρήσεις της περιοχής θεωρείται ο Αύγουστος, μια και εκτιμούν ότι η τουριστική κίνηση εκείνο το μήνα, θα κρίνει πόσες επιχειρήσεις θα επιβιώσουν φέτος.
