Carnegie Hall Tower
New York, USA

HEIGHT: 231m/757 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1988
ARCHITECT: Cesar Pelli with Brennen Beer Gorman Architects

The tower's highly patterned facade echoes the concert hall's orange and brown colors but also introduces a dark green banding near the top of its east setback and the crown of the tower, presumably a reference to a green mansard-style roof that is mentioned in the book, "The Landmarks of New York," published in 1988 by Harry N. Abrams Inc. The author wrote that the mansard roof was removed in 1894 "to build the crowning studio floor."

The tower's remarkably thin slab extends through the block from 57th Street to 56th Street and would be widely considered New York's most dramatic "sliver" building were it not for the fact that its west facade faces smack into the black facade of the Metropolitan Tower, which is almost as tall and the separation between the two is only about 20 feet, the width of the Russian Tea Room building nestled between them.

Harry B. Macklowe, the developer of the Metropolitan Tower, originally planned a much larger development that would have included not only his own site, but also the restaurant's and the lot on which Carnegie Hall Tower was erected. He had reached tentative agreements with Carnegie Hall about its lot, but Faith Stewart-Gordon, the owner of the restaurant, refused repeated offers from Macklowe, and later from the Elghanayan brothers who own Rockrose Development Corporation that built Carnegie Hall Tower.

As a result of her intransigence, two very tall towers, both slightly under 800 feet in height, were built rather than one that would have been more efficient and economic, with greater benefit to Carnegie Hall, as well as having made better planning sense.;)

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. (as the old joke goes)
And I think Cesar did and came up with one of the nicest PoMo towers anywhere.

9.5/10

that black steel cornice at the top is genious, that , along with the coloring, makes me give this one a perfect score of 10/10

I see a lot of thought went into its design details. But that said, it doesnt appeal to me in the aesthetic sense.

That is a nice friggin building! It's crown and window designs around the top floors is really cool. ->9.5/10

I think it should be moved to my city so it gets the attention it deserves.

Are we all looking at the same building here? This building has an awesome facade! Oh well, gotta respect everyone's opinion...

One of my favourites. Not only does it echo Carnegie Hall, but also the multitude of brick multi-level buildings spotted around the city.

Good ole 10

Liz L
January 7th, 2003, 02:32 PM
8/10 - Its slim form gives it good height, and the brick facade fits well with the neighboring buildings, as museumb pointed out. Also the facade has some good detailing that keeps it from being bland.

But, IMHO, the cornice is awkward and doesn't fit the rest of the building, and the same goes for the green bands - they could have been integrated into the rest of the design somehow. As it is, they look like they're just stuck on as an afterthought...Maybe if they'd made those brown horizontal bands green...

WAY TO GO, Urban Landscape!!! :D :D :D Wish I could come and hear you - May your performance be a rousing success!!!

The slim side is quite interesting, and it has plenty of 'soar' factor. I'm not overly impressed with the colour and facade though.

Not bad, but not particularly good, either. I'd give it a fairly mediocre 6.5

Ok now everything about this one is boring except it's height. I hate it's roof the most but it's whole desighn and colour comes very close. So it's simply very ugly to me and just has to fall into my most hated skyscraper catagory and only gets points for height. 3/10
