View Full Version : #206 l Carnegie Hall Tower l NEW YORK l 231m l 60fl
enzo December 28th, 2002, 09:48 AM Carnegie Hall Tower
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 231m/757 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1988
ARCHITECT: Cesar Pelli with Brennen Beer Gorman Architects
The tower's highly patterned facade echoes the concert hall's orange and brown colors but also introduces a dark green banding near the top of its east setback and the crown of the tower, presumably a reference to a green mansard-style roof that is mentioned in the book, "The Landmarks of New York," published in 1988 by Harry N. Abrams Inc. The author wrote that the mansard roof was removed in 1894 "to build the crowning studio floor."
The tower's remarkably thin slab extends through the block from 57th Street to 56th Street and would be widely considered New York's most dramatic "sliver" building were it not for the fact that its west facade faces smack into the black facade of the Metropolitan Tower, which is almost as tall and the separation between the two is only about 20 feet, the width of the Russian Tea Room building nestled between them.
Harry B. Macklowe, the developer of the Metropolitan Tower, originally planned a much larger development that would have included not only his own site, but also the restaurant's and the lot on which Carnegie Hall Tower was erected. He had reached tentative agreements with Carnegie Hall about its lot, but Faith Stewart-Gordon, the owner of the restaurant, refused repeated offers from Macklowe, and later from the Elghanayan brothers who own Rockrose Development Corporation that built Carnegie Hall Tower.
As a result of her intransigence, two very tall towers, both slightly under 800 feet in height, were built rather than one that would have been more efficient and economic, with greater benefit to Carnegie Hall, as well as having made better planning sense.;)

enzo December 28th, 2002, 09:57 AM How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. (as the old joke goes)
And I think Cesar did and came up with one of the nicest PoMo towers anywhere.
9.5/10
:D
Steely Dan December 28th, 2002, 10:15 AM that black steel cornice at the top is genious, that , along with the coloring, makes me give this one a perfect score of 10/10
RafflesCity December 28th, 2002, 11:51 AM 6.5/10
I see a lot of thought went into its design details. But that said, it doesnt appeal to me in the aesthetic sense.
SteelCity32 December 28th, 2002, 11:46 PM wow, nice looking one. I like it.
8/10
Sunflower December 29th, 2002, 12:39 AM The building's shape and style don't really fit together, if that makes sense...
7/10
Jeff from Winnipeg December 29th, 2002, 08:01 AM That is a nice friggin building! It's crown and window designs around the top floors is really cool. ->9.5/10
I think it should be moved to my city so it gets the attention it deserves.
UrbanLandscape December 30th, 2002, 11:45 AM I'll be there, in the hall, performing, in a matter of months! Excitement grows...
enzo December 31st, 2002, 02:37 AM Cool Urban! What are you performing there for? Let me know when you are coming up, perhaps I could catch your performance and say hello!:D
Wu-Gambino December 31st, 2002, 09:15 PM Doesn't look good w/ NYC 7
AG January 2nd, 2003, 01:47 AM A bit boxy for my liking, and the facade is boring, but I like how it looks so thin and tall.
7/10
Jeff from Winnipeg January 2nd, 2003, 07:11 AM "...and the facade is boring..."
Are we all looking at the same building here? This building has an awesome facade! Oh well, gotta respect everyone's opinion...
KGB January 2nd, 2003, 07:38 AM Oh...solid 9 from me.
Who wouldn't kill for a high-floor suite overlooking the park.
KGB
Bobdreamz January 2nd, 2003, 09:25 AM love it...great design & colors....pretty amazing considering the amount of land they had to deal with...it's slimness makes it soar!
overall 9/10
SeeMacau January 4th, 2003, 01:38 AM The colours and the shapes are great

agree... the style seems to go with shorter buildings?
SUNNI January 4th, 2003, 02:14 PM it looks so thin and tall that it could pierce the skies
a 9.5 for this one..
Dan January 6th, 2003, 10:15 AM 7/10
Not bad at all but I don't like those spikes at the top. Looks like a giant comb.
Muse January 7th, 2003, 10:36 AM One of my favourites. Not only does it echo Carnegie Hall, but also the multitude of brick multi-level buildings spotted around the city.
Good ole 10
Liz L January 7th, 2003, 02:32 PM 8/10 - Its slim form gives it good height, and the brick facade fits well with the neighboring buildings, as museumb pointed out. Also the facade has some good detailing that keeps it from being bland.
But, IMHO, the cornice is awkward and doesn't fit the rest of the building, and the same goes for the green bands - they could have been integrated into the rest of the design somehow. As it is, they look like they're just stuck on as an afterthought...Maybe if they'd made those brown horizontal bands green...
WAY TO GO, Urban Landscape!!! :D :D :D Wish I could come and hear you - May your performance be a rousing success!!!
De Snor January 24th, 2003, 10:57 PM This is a masterpiece of classic architecture in a modern version , 9/10
Luke_C. February 6th, 2003, 01:52 AM Having seen this building in person it is amazingly slender and tall. I give it an 8.
The Messiah February 22nd, 2003, 07:28 PM Oh man i also love this one.Look at how slim that tower is!Wow!
A 9.5/10
Oaronuviss February 22nd, 2003, 09:09 PM I don't really like that building, because it's sort of bland and 'dirty' looking.
However I like how it is very tall and slender.
5.5
BMXican February 28th, 2003, 03:27 PM I really like this one - 9/10
DrumCorpsAlum February 28th, 2003, 05:07 PM Would be ordinary but the top makes it extraordinary. I like! 8/10.
Monkey April 7th, 2003, 08:19 AM First off, thanks to Enzo for a good and thorough introduction and great pix. :okay:
Second, I think I like this place! :) 8.5
Evergrey April 10th, 2003, 04:47 PM 8.5 A great Pelli work... looks very old... great facade... classy
Jase Calvin April 16th, 2003, 05:24 PM Very nice, fits into NYC very well because of its colours. It's also quite thin! I gave it a 7.5/10 but I should have given it a higher score.
BGT April 24th, 2003, 11:39 PM 7/10
huaiwei May 28th, 2003, 12:01 PM 7/10. Thank goodness its narrow...or else its gonna look too overbearing with tt kind of facade.
AtlanticaC5 July 13th, 2003, 06:37 PM I like this building, 9/10

de flatneuroot September 1st, 2003, 08:31 PM 7/10 for its slenderness, but i do not like the top.

renell September 14th, 2003, 06:06 PM 7.5/10 nice contrast with it's neighbor.
but the building itself.... it's ok
New Jack City October 6th, 2003, 05:23 PM 9.5/10...Another Pelli masterpiece. It's amazing how well the building blends in and fits with it's surroundings. The building really soars, is nice and simple with a nice variation of colors and facades, and the top is the icing on the cake.
airsickpenthousedweller October 23rd, 2003, 09:08 PM A rather fatiguing architectural drill.

it looks nice.
7 World Trade April 23rd, 2004, 06:19 AM hmm, this one has a pretty historical appeal to it, but its dark blue-green portions of the facade just doesn't match the rest of the building.

Cityspire next door is pretty awesome too!
Monkey September 15th, 2004, 10:48 PM The slim side is quite interesting, and it has plenty of 'soar' factor. I'm not overly impressed with the colour and facade though.
Not bad, but not particularly good, either. I'd give it a fairly mediocre 6.5
David3820 September 25th, 2004, 11:17 PM Ok now everything about this one is boring except it's height. I hate it's roof the most but it's whole desighn and colour comes very close. So it's simply very ugly to me and just has to fall into my most hated skyscraper catagory and only gets points for height. 3/10
Winus November 1st, 2004, 09:40 PM I don't like the colours which were used to cheer up this boring façade.

MattSal March 20th, 2005, 05:27 AM Nice, but the facade mixing could have been much better. So could the crown. I give it a 7/10.
