View Full Version : ~~~~Post Counts~~~~
philip February 17th, 2005, 09:52 AM Hi, I noticed that sometimes my post counts do not incease when I make a post. At first, I thought it was because I had multiple windows open, so I always close all othe windows when I make a post here, and the problem went away.
However, I just noticed the same problem (post count does not increase) today and I only have one window open (this one), so am I missing something here?
I have made about 61 posts on this forum (I knew this by clicking on my profile and track all the posts I made), but my post count only shows 50. I know this shouldn't be too much of a concern, but I want to be recognized when I visit SSC, and people who made more post general receive more respect than people who made only a few.
Is anybody else having the same problem??
Thank you in advance for your advise.
Monkey February 17th, 2005, 10:46 AM If you post in the Skybar then it doesn't add to your post count.

 True, very true.
*smug grin*
renell February 17th, 2005, 12:52 PM Well depends on what they post. I can do all of wjfox2002's traveling around SSC, stir shit and I'll get responses the other way around
I say bother not about your post count. At least not to a Macbeth like addiction.
Monkey February 17th, 2005, 01:54 PM On the whole, I would go along fairly closely with what renell says, Philip. He's an old hand, as am I. :)
The reason wjfox says with a big smirk that Skybar posts don't count is quite simple and at the same time mischievously misleading. :bash: He knows good & well how many of his post points come from utterances in the UK skybar, where those posts for some reason DO count. The same goes for the Latin America Skybar, as I discovered much to my surprise the other day. Maybe I should hang out there more often? :D
The thing is that, for unexplained reasons (except for such vague utterances as [a certain forum] "chose to turn off the point count") ,there is no plausible explanation for posts counting in one forum's Skybar but not in that of another. :bash:
So be aware: IN GENERAL, skybar posts DON't count.
In other words, you can talk yourself blue in the face in *some* skybars without doing a thing for your post count while in others you can blather away in oneliners to your heart's content in the most inane & minimalistic fashion and WATCH that post count rise!
If you want to up your post count fast, just go over to the UK skybar and post "urp" and "barf" as rapidly as the system will allow you! You must target the correct & appropriate thread for this manner of enlightened comment, of course. :D
Another way to get your post count up is to go over to the Urban Photo Contest section and write one-liners. Let me know right here whether you agree that all those photos wjfox deems not sharp enough are indeed so, and whether they indeed merit to be singled out as inferior. Sputter out a comment or at least a rating, and watch your post count [b[rise[/b] meteorically! !!!:okay: Same goes for the Rate Our Talls (ROT) section.
In other words, without much investment, you can have over 1000 posts here in no time flat.
Thus sayeth an old-timer.
Btw, and you should be aware of this: there are occasional severe "maintenance" actions here, and it seems we're just about due for the next one. This maintenance, while no doubt generally beneficial, usually has a side result of reduced post count for forumers. So don't say you weren't warned! :runaway:
philip February 18th, 2005, 02:55 AM WOW, thanks guys!!! I never expected to receive so much response, and you guys really put a lot of personal touch in your reply.
wjfox2002--Thanks for letting me know that posting in skybar doesn't increase counts. I didn't know this because SSP counts all posts in every forum; I didn't know SSC can say which one counts and which one does not.
renell/ Whose Homepage--Thanks. I wasn't trying to increase my post counts to impress anybody. To let you in a little secret, I am actually a long time fan at SSP (sh........) . So I usually go to SSP first to make most of my contribution. Since most construction updates at the two websites (SSP, SSC) are the same, by the time I finish at SSP and come over to SSC, I don't want to post the same thing here all over again. So the only threads I can make reply to are very few and most likely in the skybar. But I wish I can still get recognized for my work here and I thought every post counts, like when you donate money to Red Cross and they say, "Every penny counts."
Anyway, thanks for the tips about UK skybar and photo contest. I learned somehting new today.
And best of all, I can keep my other windows open while I am posting here. Since my suspicion about multi-tasking affecting posts count is not true. YAYYYYYYY !!! :)
Nick in Atlanta February 27th, 2005, 03:28 AM I find that as you begin to use SSC more you will start to notice that high Post counts don't necessarily show how much a forumer contributes to SSC. There are many forumers who have been using SSC for a long time and don't have thousands of posts, but when they do post they are often the posts you really want to see.
There is good posting that includes photos, thoughtful presentation, clear narrative and creativity. It takes time to "build" a good post, especially when you include pics and narrative.
There are some forumers who post emoticons and have high post counts, but you will quickly figure out who these people are and what to expect from them. Start threads that interest you and post thoughtful comments on threads that you have something worthwhile to add and you will find that your post count will grow over time, but the quality of your posts is what will make others "respect" you.
PS: I'm not sure that anyone really gets respect on SSC! Maybe that's a good thing?
