View Full Version : Maribor: Slovenia's Second City

While Ljubljana is becoming increasingly known as a tourist destination, Maribor is still fairly obscure. That could change soon, since Maribor Airport is currently in negotiations with the low-cost airline RyanAir, which could start serving the city this year and bring in thousands of new tourists. Here are some photos of Slovenia's second largest "city" (population 100,000):

Thanks, Wicky! That's one downside of Slovenia Tourism: very few photos of modern architecture.

Speaking of modern architecture, here are some photos of Europark, Maribor's largest shopping center. The phots are either tiny or weird, but I could not find any other decent-sized pics of the mall:

The mall attracts millions of shoppers each year, partly because of its proximity to Austria.

I would say this is my favorite city in Slovenia, although i like Ljubljana, too, Maribor is more charming, not to mention many other towns that look adorable like Skofja Loka and Ptuj :)

AZ2SI, if you want to open a thread on either town mentioned above, i can offer you many cool pics of them :)

Thanks for the offer! I'm currently looking for any good pics to use in my "Slovenia's Coastal Towns" thread, but I'm sure many people would like it if you started a thread on one of those towns, especially if you have great photos!

This also is Maribor. Very nice housing project not far from railway station. Made these photos 3 years ago while staying in Maribor for some hours.
Do not know the architect. Maybe somebody knows more about it?

You had to bring that up! ;)

And thanks to Artis for the pics of that residential project. I don't know anything about it, but it looks like mid-1990s architecture.

You mean Croats dont you? There would be Slovenes there, but the number of Croats in Argentina, especially Buenos Aires is phenomenal. ;)

Guys do you know how is old TAM factory in Maribor going on? Does it stilll work?

AZ2SI
March 13th, 2005, 04:00 AM
Long foot: Nope. TAM, once the pride of Maribor, went bust a few years ago.

AstroBoy: Argentina also has a huge Slovenian population. Some settled there before WWII, while many others moved there because they feared Communist persecution after the war (including a large number of anti-Partisan Domobranci -- "Home Guards" -- and their families).

Falcon83: Thanks! The ski races take place just outside Maribor, in the hills of Pohorje. You can see some VR panoramas here. (http://webo.domovanje.com/Lisica/Dogajanje.htm)

That's funny, the number of Slovenian immigrants to Argentina is estimated at around 35,000.

Sorry to reply to this question so late, but I guess AZ doesn't know everything about former TAM, now TVM...
It's still far from former results, but things are developing very good... From SloveniaNEWS, thread about Slovenia in "Euroscrapers":

New buses from TVM for Neoplan

Tovarna vozil Maribor d.o.o. (TVM) has signed a contract for developing and constructing new midibuses for German company Neoplan. Neoplan has never made midibuses before and this would be it's first breach on this market (midibuses are buses with max. of 36 seats).
This contract will bring TVM 10 million € of annual income in first years. TVM constructed 60 airport buses for Neoplan last year which was 50 % of all world's market in this segment.
First prototypes will be presented in last months of this year and start of production in January 2007. 150 midibuses are expected to be delivered for Neoplan in 2007. TVM will be the only producer of midibuses in Europe.
Maribor's vehicle factory is also known for it's military programme, especially servicing different vehicles and constructions of undercarriage.
