feverwin June 28th, 2006, 01:52 PM Since I have some time, and there's no Dalian thread in this forum, I will be very glad to introduce something about Dalian, the beautiful coast city in the Northeast China, and usually we call it North pearl. (北方明珠)

feverwin June 28th, 2006, 01:58 PM History
In the Qin and Han periods (221 B.C.-220 A.D.), the Dalian region was under the jurisdiction of Liaodong county. In the early Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Dalian region was under the jurisdiction of Andong Prefecture in Jili state, and in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), it was under the jurisdiction of Dong Jing Tong Liaoyang county. Dalian was named Sanshan in the period of Weijin (220-420), San Shanpu in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Sanshan Seaport in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and Qing Niwakou in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In the 1880s, the Qing government constructed loading bridges and fortifications with built-in cannons, and set up mining camps on the northern coast of Dalian Gulf, making it become a small town. After the invasion and occupation of Russia, the city was called Qing Niwa and was renamed Dalian in 1899. During the First and Second Opium Wars, Dalian was invaded and harassed by the British army. As the main battlefield of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and Russo-Japanese War, Dalian suffered great calamity in these two wars in modern history. Consequently, Dalian became a Russian and Japanese colony for nearly half a century, meanwhile under the Japanese colonial rule for 40 years.
The unconditional surrender of Japan on August of 1945 marks the liberation of Dalian in the anti-fascist war, but the Soviets, who had taken possession of the city in advance of the end of hostilities, remained in the city until 1955. During this period the Soviets and Chinese Communists cooperated in the further development of the city, its industrial infrastructure, and especially the port. The city had been relatively undamaged during the war.
After the (friendly) departure of the Soviets, China made Dalien into a major shipbuilding center. In the 1990s the city benefitted from the attentions of Bo Xilai (son of the important first generation Party elder, Bo Yibo) who was both mayor of the city and provincial party official, who, among other things, banned bicycles, created large, lush parks in the city's many traffic circles, and generally built things up very attractively. He also preserved much of Dalian's interesting and attractive Japanese and Russian architectural heritage. His legacy, however, also includes the usual quota of empty buildings built with questionable loans, over-development, and corruption. He is now Minister of Commerce.

feverwin June 28th, 2006, 02:09 PM These pictures are not taken by me, and it's a long time I haven't been back there, so maybe they're a little "old". I will come back in a few month, and perhaps I will put more beautiful pictures here...
-------------
Dalian port is emerging as a very important port for international trade. A new harbor for oil tankers, at the terminus of an oil pipeline from the Daqing oilfields, was completed in 1976. Dalian is the largest petroleum port in China, and also the 3rd largest port overall. Accordingly, Dalian is a major center for oil refineries, diesel engineering, and chemical production.
Dalian has been given many benefits by the Chinese government, including the title of "open-city," (1984) which allows it to receive considerable foreign investment
Cultural life
Every September Dalian hosts the Dalian International Fashion Festival. This festival is a chance for many major foreign companies to showcase their new products and sign up buyers. Before the festival, the city holds an opening ceremony attended by government officials as well as famous stars of the entertainment world.
Dalian is the home of three zoological parks: Dalian Forest Zoo, Shengya Ocean World, and Polar World. The Forest Zoo has a free-range animal section as well as a more traditional zoo. Shengya Ocean World includes an underwater conveyor through a transparent tunnel. Polar World is the only park devoted to polar animals in China.
Sports play a big role in the local culture. The city's mayor, a young princeling (member of the ruling cadres) encouraged a top league soccer team with foreign aid and a lot of city cash to increase the city's image in the country and bring local fame. They have been caught out several times though and the heyday of the Super Team has passed. The city's soccer team has dominated the sport in China and Asia by winning 7 titles out of the past 9 years of Chinese professional soccer league. The city is also a powerhouse producing numerous track and field champions.
The local cuisine heavily depends on variety of fresh seafood and fruits, both of which are abundant in the area.

When this castle was builded, I left my hometown for Europe. So I have never visited it. However I heard that it is a shell museum, since Dalian is a coast city...
it seems few Dalian friends here. Who is from Dalian, sign you up here...
feverwin July 3rd, 2006, 01:07 PM Bo banned bicycle? Is that ban still in force?
It's not banned, although I never used a bicycle in my childhood. Because dalian's public bus system is so perfect, you can travel anywhere on a bus, so it's no need to use a bicycle.
However when you go to some park or square, you can borrow a bike and have some fun there...
gaoanyu July 3rd, 2006, 07:00 PM Can you really call Dalian the richest city in the northeast while Daqing is actually no.2 in the whole of China in GDP per capita terms (right after Shenzhen)?
feverwin July 3rd, 2006, 09:25 PM Can you really call Dalian the richest city in the northeast while Daqing is actually no.2 in the whole of China in GDP per capita terms (right after Shenzhen)?
Actually, I just mean the who GDP, not per capital...like shanghai is the richest city in mainland, also not mean per capital...
I was mean to write "the beautiful" city, I don't know why I write the richest...
feverwin July 3rd, 2006, 09:50 PM Some other pictures...

gaoanyu July 4th, 2006, 12:27 PM Actually, I just mean the who GDP, not per capital...like shanghai is the richest city in mainland, also not mean per capital...
I was mean to write "the beautiful" city, I don't know why I write the richest...
That's ok then:)
Dalian is my favourite city in the whole of China, I only wish that its economy will boom to the same level as Beijing or at least Guangzhou in the future (not to mention Shanghai, it's too big for Dalian). Then it will truly be the best city to live in.

No way, Dalian has only 6 million people which is just the size of Xicheng beijing...I would rather she becomes a tourism city with freshest air and most attracting views ...

It can be a tourist city as well as economically strong.

BTW, nice picture...
raymond_tung88 July 5th, 2006, 03:54 PM I think Dalian is the perfect city. Its not too big, nor too small. Its buildings are elegant, streets are clean, and scenary is astounding.
I wish the 2008 Olympic sailing events were held there instead of Qingdao.
Hed_Kandi August 10th, 2006, 05:47 AM Dalian continually ranks as China's Most Liveable city and from these pics, it's easy to see why!

Dalian is my favourite Chinese city!
googleabcd May 15th, 2007, 12:24 AM Can you really call Dalian the richest city in the northeast while Daqing is actually no.2 in the whole of China in GDP per capita terms (right after Shenzhen)?
DaLian's GDP per capita ranks 25th in China
2006 GDP per capita of Chinese cities
1 深圳(粤) 136071.3 (Shenzhen's number is not accurate since the 80% immigrants are not included. It is close to Guangzhou/Shanghai)
2 大庆(黑) 89962.56
3 珠海(粤) 66550.61
4 玉溪(滇) 56307.54
5 克拉玛依(新)50857.54
6 盘锦(辽) 46543.21
7 广州(粤) 38568.37 (Another version says that Guangzhou's GDP per capita is around $USD8000 to $USD11,000)
8 厦门(闽) 38566.86
9 杭州(浙) 38246.9
10 无锡(苏) 37959.06
11 惠州(粤) 37163.62
12 上海 ()36206.43
13 宁波(浙) 35446.47
14 太仓(苏) 34813.67
15 江门(粤) 34200.3
16 昆山(苏) 33748.03
17 佛山(粤) 33121.47
18 东莞(粤) 32278.75
19 石狮(闽) 31714.78
20 福州(闽) 31582.03
21 张港(苏) 31579.26
22 南海(粤) 31211.92
23 顺德(粤) 30685.69
24 苏州(苏) 30470.19

zergcerebrates May 15th, 2007, 11:00 AM Dalian is really amazing. Very elegant and nice bldgs, Shanghai,Beijing and most of all Guangzhou should learn from their city planning. Guangzhou is so chaotic and Dalian is so clean. Have you guys noticed that Northern Chinese cities are somewhat similar to Korean and Japanese styles? That is less tacky and more elegant simple and very pleasing to the eye. Why can't other Chinese cities follow Dalians example?

snow is red July 19th, 2008, 01:28 AM Dalian: a shining pearl of north China
2008-07-18
At the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in northeast China's Liaoning province, Dalian is increasingly important in global trade due to its strengths in shipping, manufacturing, finance and tourism.
The city of 6 million residents is a hub for the Bohai Bay area and the northeast Asia economic region that faces Japan and both the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea across the Yellow Sea.
Shipping hub
With 1,906 km of coastline, Dalian's shipping network connects Bohai Bay and northeast China to ports across the globe. Its Zhoushuizi International Airport, the largest airfreight center in northeastern China, handles 130 daily domestic and international flights including more than 30 between Dalian and Beijing each day. Weekly more than 70 flights connect with Japan and over 40 serve South Korea.
Ships leave Dalian Port for more than 300 destinations in over 160 countries and regions. Over 70 percent of goods shipped by sea and more than 90 percent of foreign-bound trade containers from northeast China pass through Dalian Port.
Throughput at the port surpassed 165.44 million tons last year, up 13.9 percent over 2006, when it handled 3.81 million containers, an increase of 18.7 percent.
The port's ore and crude oil terminals each have a capacity of 300,000 tons. Another terminal is dedicated to shipping automobiles.
Test operations are now underway on a Yantai-Dalian train ferry across Bohai Bay to Shandong province.
The Dayaowan Bonded Harbor Area, which started operations in 2007 in the north of the city, is also part of Dalian's bid to become the international shipping hub of northeast Asia.
An internationalized city
Dalian became a window to northeast China after the nation began its reform and opening policies. It has a State-level economic development zone, a hi-tech industrial zone, a State tourist resort and the only bonded harbor and export processing zone in the region.
The city is now home to 12,661 foreign-invested companies, including 186 operations by 87 Fortune 500 companies.
It has residential communities and schools serving the overseas community along with international restaurants and entertainment facilities.
As the financial center of northeast China, Dalian is home to 79 branches or subsidiaries of finance institutions, including eight foreign banks.
Sompo Japan Insurance and ING Group have their China headquarters in Dalian. Thirteen other foreign insurance companies have representative offices in the city.
The International Monetary Fund established its first China training center in Dalian. Soybean futures traded on the Dalian Commodity Exchange are ranked No 1 in China and No 2 in the world.
The city is also an exhibition center. It has hosted the Worldwide Chinese Insurance Congress, an APEC senior officials economic conference, the Asia-Europe forum, a WTO ministerial meeting, and the annual "New Champions" forum, also known as Summer Davos, that attracts government and global business leaders.
New science & technology
Dalian also plays a crucial role in the revitalization of northeast China. Its industrial output is top among the region's cities.
Relying on science and independent innovation, the city's hi-tech and new industries now join petrochemicals, shipping, and manufacturing as core industries.
The city already leads the nation in production of petrochemicals, diesel locomotives, machine tools, automobile spare parts, refrigeration equipment, precision bearings and shipbuilding.
Dalian is home to 22 institutions of higher learning and more than 100 scientific research centers whose strength in ocean engineering, computational mechanics, industrial chemistry, and biological engineering lead the nation.
Its telecommunication and information infrastructure is at the forefront in China. It has the largest international data processing center in the northeastern region.
A $2.5 billion Intel chip factory, one of the largest single foreign investments ever made in China, is under construction in the economic development zone of the city.
Dalian is also a national software production and export center and a base for computer animation and games.
The city is now home to nearly 700 software and IT service companies, a sector that continues to grow over 50 percent every year, making Dalian China's third-largest software export city.
Capital of romance
It is also among the "Best Tourist Cities in China" selected by the National Tourism Administration and the World Tourism Organization.
In March 1999, the National Tourism Administration named Dalian "Capital of Romance".
Surrounding the city are prime spots to enjoy water sports, while every year it hosts various events such as the Sand Beach Cultural Festival, the International Fashion Festival and the International Beer Festival.
With the Bohai Sea to the west and the Yellow Sea in the east, Dalian is neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter. The city has more than 60 public squares, including famed Xinghai Square - Asia's largest city square - and Zhongshan Square in the city's central business district.
Dalian promotes tourism through the 3S: - sun, sand and sea in summer and springtime climate, sports and shopping in winter.
A tourist resort in Lushun district showcases "half of the modern history of China" while Jinshitan resort in the development zone offers the highly regarded Geological Museum of China and attractions called the Golden Coast and Discovery Land.
More than 40 percent of the city is covered by greenery, the equivalent of 11.1 sq m for every resident.
Dalian has been awarded many titles for its environment, including the China Residence Award and the National Environment Protection Model City. It was among the world's top 500 cities with excellent environment listed by the United Nations.
Sports city
Dalian is famous as the hometown of national athletes. China's Olympic dream started with a Dalian resident named Liu Changchun who became first Chinese Olympic athlete when he competed in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Wang Junxia, who was born and trains in Dalian, is the world record holder in the women's 3,000 m and 10,000 m races.
The Dalian football team won eight championships in the 13 seasons of China's professional football league.
Every year, the city holds more than 300 sports activities, including the International Walking Festival.
In 2006, the walking festival drew 230,000 people to walk along the seaside Binhai Road. It set a new world record.
It was the host city for one of two marathon races held in China by the International Association of Athletics Federations. Dalian also has wheelchair races for disabled athletes.

Mostly competing against each other...Dalian is successful at getting the Japanese companies, while Tianjin gets most other companies.

Whiteeclipse July 13th, 2009, 08:59 AM Ten years ago, Dalian lagged behind cities such as Xi'an and Shanghai that had begun developing a software industry infrastructure.
Today, Dalian is being called "the Chinese Bangalore," an up-and-coming rival to the software and information services hub in India.
One competitive edge boasted by the city's Dalian Software Park in Liaoning province is its Japanese language capabilities, which is attracting more Japanese outsourcing business.
Located in the city's southwestern suburb, Dalian Software Park is home to 450 businesses.
Nearly half (47 percent) of those enterprises are foreign companies, including dozens representing corporations as familiar as IBM, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Accenture, Panasonic and Sony.
"We're really working in a multinational environment," Teresa Li, who works in the HP Global Service Center at Dalian Software Park, told China Business Weekly.
"My colleagues are from around the world. They have different colors of skin and speak different languages. But since most of us are bilingual or even trilingual, we always manage to find a common language," Li said.
The industrial park is poised to attract more world-class companies in coming years.
Dalian already tops the rankings in China for global outsourcing capabilities and ranks fifth worldwide as an outsourcing city, according to the Global Delivery Index published in 2007 by the International Data Group.
Dalian's rank
According to the Index, Dalian ranks fifth internationally behind Bangalore in India, Manila in the Philippines, and New Delhi and Mumbai in India.
A Dalian Software Park insider who asked that her name not be published told China Business Weekly that the tendency in comparing outsourcing locations has been to consider one a potential threat to the other.
But that is not the case, she said.
"Using my company as an example, we have service centers in Dalian, as well as in other parts of the world like Bangalore and Manila," the source said.
"These locations do not overlap; they interact. They form our global service system as a whole. This multi-location strategic structure is widely adopted by leading international companies in the world to avoid dependence on one location," she said.
The source cited Dalian's experience and language skills in dealing with Japanese and Korean outsourcing operations.
Dalian now handles 80 percent of Japan's outsourcing business, according to statistical reports, she said.
Dalian also is unique among similar Chinese cities in the software industry business because of its business operations model.
Instead of operating strictly as a state-owned business, Dalian Software Park operates as a government-facilitated, privately run enterprise, the source said.
Dalian Mayor Xia Deren said the park grew rapidly in the last 10 years because of strong, consistent government support.
Capability
Dalian still lags behind Beijing and China in software research and development (R&D) capabilities, one park tenant said.
"Dalian is good at its industrialization of the outsourcing business in an international environment and has excellent delivery capabilities," Ejay Huang, a programming engineer at Panasonic, said.
"But as a research person, I still long for the opportunity to work in Beijing. It has a sound knowledge system and could provide more space for a long-term development," Huang said.
Huang added that Dalian's outsourcing business still is mostly focused on Japan, while its share of the global outsourcing industry is much smaller.
"And its project-by-project business model is loose and unstable compared with India's capacity to absorb and transact business," Huang said.
Still, Dalian is well on its way to a stronger competitive position, others said.
"In the near future, the best opportunity for development n China lies in technology and services outsourcing," Xia, Dalian's mayor, said.
"We will make good use of our solid foundation and geographic advantage in our efforts to make Dalian the leading city of the global outsourcing industry," Xia said.
A sign posted at Dalian Software Park, where construction of new buildings is under way, reflects the mayor's vision.
"One world, one office," the sign reads.

NCT January 13th, 2010, 11:50 PM Dalian looks like a nice city from these Pics and Google Earth. The Central area has a nice mixture of old and new. The old buildings are high-quality and very well preserved, while the new developments compliment the old rather than dominates over it. The whole city is well laid out in terms of the road network, and there are virtually no slums. Those linear settlements at the foot of the hills must be amazing places to live in.
The railway station in the right place, but if I can be picky the huge car park in front of it spoils it.

If you didn't indicate this pic was taken in Dalian, I'd have thought that this is a photo of a typical north american residential subdivison.
Joel que January 5th, 2012, 09:17 AM lest we forgot, there's still a lot of historical building in dalian and shanghai are left to rot, this due to lack of financial resource by the city.one solution was to sold to any private investor willing to put up the money to restore it.
