edubejar February 19th, 2005, 09:34 PM I have fond memories of Malaga. It is a very interesting city...very Andalusian yet international at the same time, mainly because of it's major airport, bringing many tourists and temporary residents from Northern Europe. Malaga is almost what Nice is to France...the gateway to a southern coastal region (Costa del Sol vs Côte d'Azur). I remember wild nights at Torremolinos, Fuengirola and the much more upscale Marbella area.

...and two webcams (http://www.ayto-malaga.es/webcam.html)
Malaga is in the middle of the Costa del Sol, the area that has the more important economic development in Spain for the lastest ten years.
A good site to live and to work, with high quality of live and good comunications with Europe by the Malaga international airport. In the latest years many people of Europe goes to Malaga not only to holidays but to work and to business. With an important Technologic Park (http://212.166.67.36/asp/EN/publica/conozca.asp?m=e&len=EN) that is IASP (http://www.iasp.ws/) World Headquarters ( International Association of Science Parks )
The city has a young and dynamic university with over 45,000 students, 20 faculties and centres of higher learning, of which those devoted to information and production technologies are particularly noteworthy, thus ensuring the availability of highly specialised labour.
The Malaga airport offers direct connections to all of Europe, and some cities of other continents (12 million passengers in 2004).
The container port of Algeciras, the biggest of Spain and one of the most important on Mediterranean sea area, is only an hour away.
Malaga and its surroundings offer excellent living conditions, including the beaches of the Costa del Sol, near the nature preserves of the Serranía de Ronda, excellent hotel, sport and leisure infrastructures (60 golf courses and 10 pleasure ports), the ski resort of Sierra Nevada (just 90 minutes away by car) and a large selection of quality real estate for sale or rent.
The quality of life and economic development of the area make it an ideal place for setting up research and development centres and high tech industries.
The network of highways, the twelve International Schools in the area, offering instruction in six different languages, and the city's dynamic university, the construction of the subway (in service in feb-2009) and the spanish high velocity train -AVE- (2007) are another reasons to say that, Malaga is probably the City with most potential in Spain actually.

MaTech June 6th, 2005, 01:19 AM Malaga Picasso Museum, Malaga (Spain)
An invest of 66 mill. euros and 8.300 m2 to expositions of the most important artist of XX century. The artist that has works in more museums around the world and that has influenced the history of the art and, even, architecture.
Museo Picasso Malaga was opened on October 27, 2003 after the architect Richard Gluckman creates a new museum for the artist in the city of his birth stocked with donations and long term loans from his family. Refurbishing an elegant Renaissance palace (XVI century) with its rooms arranged on two floors around a courtyard for the permanent collection, and adding new buildings for temporary exhibitions and other facilities effectively creates a cultural quarter for the city, alongside its Roman amphitheatre and in the shadow of its Moorish alcazaba.’
‘It crosses boundaries, from the archaeological to the contemporary and between architecture and art.’ Building works struck Moorish remains beneath the palace and then Roman without anyone getting excited. Even Greek artefacts hardly evinced concern. But when they hit 2500 year old Phoenician relics everyone sat up. The legendary Levantine traders had long been suspected of visiting Malaga but little evidence had turned up. Gluckman had to redesign part of the basement, scheduled for art handling and storage, into a display of the valuable finds, and somehow incorporate it into the intriguing routes he was weaving through the buildings above, with their subtle interplay between new and old, temporary and permanent.
The Malaga Picasso Museum opened its doors with an initial collection that amounts to a spectacular total of 204 pieces. Some of these are a downright donation, including 133 works donated by Christine Ruiz-Picasso (14 oil paintings, 9 sculptures, 44 drawings, a sketchbook of the Royan series comprising a further 36 drawings, 58 engravings and 7 ceramics) and 22 pieces donated by Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (5 oil paintings, 2 drawings, 10 engravings and 5 ceramics). This impressive group of works was complemented by a further 49 pieces (23 oil paintings, 2 sculptures, 7 drawings, 5 engravings and 12 ceramics) which were lent by the heirs to the Museum for a renewable ten year period. Sothebys valued the collection in almost 200 millions of euros. The pieces were part of the artist's private collection. It is a legacy that, in addition to its undeniable artistic value, will also allow tourists to get a glimpse of Pablo Ruiz Picasso's intense emotional life, which is clearly reflected in his works.

I suggest you not only visit the this museum, but the other Picasso museum of Malaga: Picassos' Birthplace House Museum and some places like the school where Picasso was. You can also walk around downtown Málaga, a city loaded with life and history, whose streets, buildings, and monuments preserve all of the enchantment and splendour of its past. The visitor will soon encounter several excuses to stop and to contemplate the vestiges of the city's rich past. On just a short walk, the visitor will see traces of the Phoenician, Roman, and Muslim period - followed by signs of the Christian and bourgeois cultures. All are found in an area of charming streets and plazas that are still the vital centre of the city today.
6 different proposals for interesting routes: the Birth Route, the Market Route , the Green Route , the Civilizations Route , the Temples Route , and the Clerical Route . All include the Picasso Museum as a reference point, and all can be completed on foot on the same day that visitors come to the museum... and, of course, you have to do a gastronomic stop to tasting the Málaga tradition of going out “ de tapeo ” ( tapa means bite size snacks).

Antsky June 13th, 2005, 12:41 AM Favorite Son Helps Revive Málaga
By ANDREW FERREN for the NY Times
Published: June 12, 2005
LIKE many Spanish cities, Málaga, the port on the Costa del Sol that many visitors to Andalusia used to skip, has taken a page from the Guggenheim Bilbao playbook on how to use culture to revitalize a crumbling urban center and seems to be making a success of it. It helps that the city's most famous son is Pablo Picasso, whose name now adorns everything from a new museum to bars and even the airport.
Hector Mediavilla/Polaris, for The New York Times
"Palmist Bird" by José Seguiri on Bolsa Street honors Pablo Picasso, a Málaga native.
Forum: Traveling in Europe
So it's no surprise that the center of gravity of the city's current revival is the two-year-old Museo Picasso Málaga, at San Augustín 8, (34-952) 127-600 and www.museopicassomalaga.org; general admission $7.50, at $1.26 to the euro. The museum's unique setting is a glorious 16th-century palace sensitively renovated and expanded by the New York architect Richard Gluckman. The intimately scaled galleries are serendipitously punctuated by tranquil patios and gardens as visitors trace the arc of Picasso's career over much of the 20th-century.
Spreading west from the museum, the casco antiguo, the old city, now bustles with new life. Shops with modernist furniture, bold Indian textiles, and sexy Italian-designed resort wear have settled into prime spots on the (mostly) pedestrian streets.
The jeweler Jorge Rojas, a Madrid transplant who moved here three years ago and just opened his first shop in Málaga at Sancha de Lara 4, www.jorgerojas.com, (34-952) 214-627, has witnessed the change firsthand "right up to the way the people in the city dress." The boutique offers his own minimalist jewelry designs, some inspired by the work of the late Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Silver and simple ring designs start at $75.
Along the old quarter's maze of narrow, crooked streets, hip restaurants like La Mentira, Duque de la Victoria 11, (34-952) 227-004, and tapas bars like Vinoteca Pikasso, Alcazabilla 12, (34-952) 228-374, now line up near old-school seafood classics like El Chinitas, Moreno Monroy 4-6, (34-952) 210-972. Given the balmy, orange-blossom-perfumed Mediterranean climate, leisurely alfresco dining is the norm and while the city's cuisine could once be summed up as fried fish, it now includes influences from around the Mediterranean and beyond.
So when the line outside the Picasso Museum looks a little too long, you can always slip into La Tetería, San Augustín 9, to sample their enormous offering of teas, Indian yogurt drinks, homemade sorbets, Moroccan desserts and inventive crepes - most under $6.25.
For a truly international meal, you might try to get a table at the popular Neo Barroco, Alamos 38, (34-952) 214-341. The restaurant's many small dining rooms open on a romantically intimate courtyard of the 18th-century house. The menu is unusually varied - Indian curries, Japanese teriyaki, Middle Eastern kafta and Italian pastas - all bearing an indelible French accent. The perfectly fried shrimp with tartar sauce ($12.60) even takes a prosaic staple of seaside dining to a new level.
After dinner, you can slip past the throngs in the Plaza de la Merced and cool off with a vodka-laced caipiroska at Flor de Lis, Plaza de la Merced 18, (34-952) 214-453. Cocktails are $6 to $7.50 and the lively crowd keeps going into the small hours.
Another late-night spot, Pecado, San Juan de Letrán 21, (34-952) 215-968, is a gay bar that in modern, open-minded Málaga brings in a fairly mixed crowd. Drinks are about $6.
For those staying overnight, stylish hotels like the AC Palacio, Cortina de Muelle 1, (34-902) 292-295, www.ac-hotels.com, (rooms from $157); and Larios, Larios 2, (34-952) 222-200, www.hotel-larios.com (from $113) have crisp minimalist furnishings and spectacular views - from the AC's rooftop pool and the Larios's terrace bar.
And if Picasso is not enough of a draw there is also the nearby Centro de Arte Contemporaneo, Alemania S/N, www.cacmalaga.org (free). This renovated old Wholesalers' Market opened a few months before the Picasso Museum and has put itself on the cultural map with important exhibitions of well-known international artists like Louise Bourgeois and Alex Katz
MaTech June 18th, 2005, 11:32 PM La Concepción: Botanic, Historic and Artistic Garden
Tropical paradise in Europe
http://www.diariosur.es/ocio/otro_contenido/media/200409/02/jardinbotanico200.jpg
From this palatial house, set in a natural landscape setting of fountains and streams, one can enjoy views of the city of Málaga. Three thousand plants grow in two hundred and fifty thousand square kilometres sheltered from the city inside this mid-19th century tropical gallery.
Thanks to the effort and vision of its founders "Finca de la Concepción" will see in the new millenium with 150 years of history, and proud to be one of the most illustrious gardens in Europe.
The gardens were created at the beginning of the 1850's by Amalia Heredia Livermore, granddaughter of an English consul and wife of Jorge Loring, one of the outstanding businessmen of the time.
The coupleís tireless travels enable us to appreciate at close hand today a great variety of trees and plants from all corners of the world. In 1943 "La Concepción" was declared a garden of historic and artistic merit and in 1990 it ceased to be private property and passed into the hands of Málaga Town Council. The Council placed Patronato Botánico Municipal "Ciudad de Málaga" in charge of its management.
Although international travel guides have referred to the garden as a definite visit of interest since the turn of the century it only officially opened to the public in 1994.
The gardens "La Concepción" include an authentic tree and plant museum which receives well deserved admiration today while retaining its original hallmark of yesterday. Its flourishing plants attract thousands of birds that flock here to enjoy this natural haven of 400 different tropical and subtropical plants, in emerald countryside where close to 500 palms trees of more than 25 species take the limelight. Here one will discover native plants from Mexico, India, Java, Australia, China, Japan and Formosa.
Species such as Moraces, Australian trees that stand out for their spurry trunks, and roots that hang from their branches and take root in the soil. The Chilean Palm is also notable as one of the four finest examples of its species in Spain. Chinese orange blossom, privet, young almeces, dwarf palms and south african species such as Bird of Paradise are also to be found. In addition, there is the dwarf date, which is one of the most elegant examples from South East Asia.
On your pilgrimage to nature, trees of enormous dimensions will certainly catch your attention such as the Araucarias, a native species of the Island of Norfolk (Oceanía), which is 45 metres high. There are others, like the renowned Blue Mexican Palm, that, though smaller, are certainly no less beautiful or any less unique.
Outside the botanical garden a new route has been developed. Around the World in 80 Trees is an amazing variety of trees from all five countries arranged according to their country of origin. There are 25 from the continent of America, 8 from Africa, 18 from Europe, 17 from Asia, and 12 from Oceania.
The Concepción Gardens are not merely a place to contemplate plants and trees, but are also where experts in environmental education work and organise teacherís training courses, primary and secondary school visits, as well as creating environmental awareness campaigns which include reforestation programmes.

MaTech November 20th, 2006, 12:33 AM Picasso nació en Málaga ..y estudió en Barcelona.
Picasso was born in Malaga. studied in Barcelona.
He doesn`t "study" at all. In fact, probably the only person that teach him was his own father, also an artist that worked as a teacher in Fine Arts Academies (in Malaga, La Coruña and Barcelona).
When Picasso left Malaga the first time (his father moved to La coruña for a new work, also as a Fine Art Academy teacher) , when he was a boy he paint so well. In fact won several prizes in those days.
But La Coruña (in the north of Spain) has an awful weather in comparation with Malaga and because that his father look for a new work and get one in Barcelona. Picasso doesn´t moved to Barcelona by himself but his father and the family moved by work reasons.
Picasso "went but didn´t study in" Barcelona´s Fine Art Academy and his father ordered him to go to Madrid without his "bad" young friends. But Picasso didn´t like to study in Madrid and in a few months come back with his family in Barcelona.
Picasso only decided to live in two places. First in Paris, because was the world city of arts in those years and then in south coast of France in summers because he felt nostalgia of the light of the mediteterranean cities like Málaga or Barcelona and he promised that didn´t come back to Spain while Franco was live. Unfortunately, Picasso dead two years before Franco. But he felt himself spanish and reject french nacionality some times.
So Picasso went to Barcelona's Fine Arts Academy and Madrid but he didn´t interesting in study any boring formal classes. So Picasso only had two teacher:
- his own father. A very good teacher, but not a very good artist.
- and himself looking and learning by himself like many others genius (Einsteind in example).
But in fact Picasso, like so many others genius, was a "world citizen"

MaTech March 26th, 2008, 07:39 PM Some photos of how to recover a nice building of the old city center, preserving the facade but, in fact, making a new building inside. Finally, we can see how the building is empty, waiting for new walls and floors. It's very usual to find archaeologic rests of phoenicians, romans etc due to Malaga was founded by phoenicians about 2.900 years ago.

Peshu April 19th, 2008, 03:03 PM An under-rated gem indeed . It's funny as i went to Malaga to visit the famed Costa del sol . Funny thing is that apart from the beautiful mansions especially around Marbella i thought the beaches in the costa del sol to be quite crappy . I left though discovering the beautiful Spanish city with a great Spanish ambience of Malaga .
MaTech April 20th, 2008, 09:04 PM The Malaga's park in the city centre.. a little jewel with plants of the five continents. This was "water" more than a century ago when it was retrieved from the sea to the city.

^Anton^ August 21st, 2009, 11:46 AM But La Coruña (in the north of Spain) has an awful weather in comparation with Malaga and because that his father look for a new work and get one in Barcelona. Picasso doesn´t moved to Barcelona by himself but his father and the family moved by work reasons.
Yeah, because the weather in NY is so much better than in Coruña... lol. Btw, I wouldn't call the weather "awful" up there, I mean, those disgustingly hot summers in Malaga and Barcelona... THAT is awful.

MaTech September 28th, 2009, 04:41 PM Which building? Do you have photos? :)
]
It was on the first floor of this building (at number 15 Plaza de la Merced, although at that time numbered as 36) where Paul was born, the night of 25 October 1881. The apartment had been rented by his father.
Everyone knows the surnames of genius (Ruiz Picasso) but not his full first name . Due to a custom of the time in Malaga, Pablo Picasso had 12 names: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Crispiniano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz Picasso... Itn't a joke, it's real.

MaTech December 15th, 2009, 02:37 AM The Spanish ship Santísima Trinidad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_ship_Nuestra_Se%C3%B1ora_de_la_Sant%C3%ADsima_Trinidad_%281769%29) (officially named Santísima Trinidad y Nuestra Señora del Buen Fin) was a first-rate ship of the line of 120 guns, which was increased in 1795-96 to 136 guns by closing in the spar deck between the quarter deck and forecastle, thus creating what was in effect a continuous fourth gundeck although the extra guns added were actually relatively small. She was the largest ship in the world when built.
A full-size replica model of the Santísima Trinidad can be seen and visited in the harbour of Málaga (http://www.malaga-capital.com/). You can see it and have a drink, perhaps romantic dinner in the restaurant or dancing in its disco at night.

Saying MARBELLA or saying BANÚS is speaking of luxury, sport, glamour, culture, commerce and above all people, technology, services and a ceaseless activity, all capable of bringing a unique mixture that works perfectly.

MaTech November 20th, 2011, 05:25 PM Malaga is known as Costa del Sol, synonymous with sunshine and the beautiful Mediterranean Sea but also as Costa del Golf as home to over 60 of the most exclusive golf courses in the world.
The Costa del Golf as it is affectionately known has over 300 days of sunshine a year and with average temperatures of 19c it isn’t difficult to understand why it has become one of Europe’s leading Golf destinations.

Málaga is currently measured as the “smartest” city in Spain. Málaga achieved the number 1 position due to its high scores in smart energy and environment, and smart services, despite its relatively low final score for enabling forces (people, economy, intelligence or ICT). In terms of the energy and environment domains, its ultimate goal is to make a 20% energy saving by adopting the measures for optimal integration of renewable energies into the power grid, ringing generators closer to consumers by establishing new models of distributed energy resources management, using batteries to store the energy generated, leveraging new smart meters and advanced communication systems for real-time control and energy management. Málaga scored also high in security and emergency services offered to its citizens, and the strong availability of e-education.

MaTech April 3rd, 2012, 09:40 AM Holy Week in Malaga, an event that attracts many tourists not only for the religious festival with more than 500 years of history, but also by the grandeur and staging. Each "throne" weighs over 5000 kg and is carried on the shoulders of, sometimes more than 250 men, for about 8 hours and in any case more than 12 hours.

Juzcar is a small village with 180 houses and 250 inhabitants just 40 miles from Malaga. ... Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures chose Juzcar, Spain, to host the world premiere of "The Smurfs," painting the town blue to turn it into the world's first Smurf village. (Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/travel/deals/la-tr-offbeat-juzcar-spain-20110705-photos,0,645194.photogallery)).
Its mountainous landscape is home to about 15 towns surrounded by trees such as oaks, pines and, mainly, chestnut trees, which are one of the economic bases of many of these towns. Sony Pictures chose Juzcar to host an event to promote its new release “The Smurfs 3D”.... I became completely absorbed by the natural surroundings. Suddenly everything seemed like the Smurf cartoons, with their villages hidden in the woods....Now I understand how Sony chose Juzcar… They are all Smurfs here!
