The name Hallgrímskirkja comes from Hallgrímur Pétursson, the poet. The statue in front of the church is Leifur Eiríksson. He is said to have been the first viking who accidentally bumped into the North American continent.

Ive visited it, and its a bit of a stage-set job: looks good from afar but doesnt hold up under close scrutiny. Its a bit of a normal parish church with too much garden-decoration style concrete work on it. There is far better architecture around the rest of Rejkyavik, although I stress that it DOES look good from afar.
