Since we have a thread about Maribor, here's one about the capital, Ljubljana (pop. 264,000) -- a quickly growing tourist destination. If you have any pictures to share with us, please post them here (Bubach Hlubach?). And, again, thanks to SinCity for letting us know about destinacije.com.

very nice. :) are there many projects in ljubljana? what is the tallest building over there?

The tallest buildings in Ljubljana, I believe, are in an 1980s residential complex in the northern part of the city. Despite that, the World Trade Center building is frequently cited as the tallest.

However, if this project gets built, it will become the tallest in the country:

http://www.mladina.si/tednik/200443/clanek/kul--arhitektura-ursa_matos/img/kolizej-maketa1_display.jpg
Source: mladina.si

An auditorium inside the building:
http://www.mladina.si/tednik/200443/clanek/kul--arhitektura-ursa_matos/img/kolizej-maketa2_display.jpg
Source: mladina.si

The project was designed by Dutch architects Willem Jan Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk. Most observers praise the architecture (I love it!), but there has also been widespread criticism of the proposal, because...

A.) An old structure from Austro-Hungarian times would have to be demolished.

B.) There are fears that the skyscraper would clash with Ljubljana's traditional skyline, which is dominated by the castle.

the project looks really interesting, but i don't think it'll "mix" well with the surroundings of the city.:(

Brnik - Ljubljana Airport:

http://www.pfmb.uni-mb.si/tomaz/tomair/images/brnik.gif

I think they are planning a new terminal/expansion.

AZ2SI
February 23rd, 2005, 10:46 AM
Yes, they are planning a new terminal. A parking structure is currently under construction and a new terminal should follow that. In the 1980s, the airport actually wanted to build a brand-new terminal south of the runway, with the northern facility eventually becoming used just for general aviation. There was even talk of a second runway! However, that all changed with the breakup of Yugoslavia and the withdrawal of JAT from the airport.

Nevertheless, traffic at the airport is now growing at a steady pace. Last year was the airport's first one in history with more than a million passengers. With tourist traffic, in particular, on the rise (including flights by easyJet), the old terminal has become way too small. Instead of moving south of the runway, the new terminal will be built next to the old one on the northern side. I've heard that one will be used for departures and one for arrivals, but I've also heard that one will be used for Shengen and the other for non-Shengen flights.

Some more pics of the airport:

Thanks, long foot, and I agree about the airport! According to official statitics, it handled 1,048,238 passengers last year -- the most ever.

Well, there are various pronounciation guides, but I prefer:

LYOO-BLYAH-NAH (the accent falls on the second syllable)

Do note, however, that the Y sounds are not fully formed. Rather, they combine with the preceding Ls to make them softer.

Well, since Ljubljana is small, maybe it's better to compare it with cities its size than with big European capitals. Having said that, no city can ever please everyone (even though Ljubljana is very popular among your fellow Italians).

BTW, since no one is guessing, Ljubljana is Europe's 245th biggest city, just ahead of Mönchengladbach, Germany, but smaller than Gijón, Spain, according to citymayors.com. :)

One question: do you consider Trieste and Venezia towns or cities?

Surely it can't compare to the likes of London or Berlin, but I think that for it's size (264,000 people) it is beautiful.

And sorry about the Expo, I was really hoping Trieste would get it.. :(

Trieste isn't in Slovenia, unless they changed borders in past 24hours that I don't know.
Otherwise I think Ljubljana is charming as well as Celje, Ptuj and Maribor which I had pleasure visiting whilst on my way to Croatia.

Hehe, I know. I was just being a bit provocative ;).

@sts: What I was going to say is that Ljubljana isn't big, but it can easily compare to many other European capitals. Yes, it doesn't have big old coloseums, nor grand cathedrals or hundred stories skyscrapers, but it does have certain features that are very important nowadays. For instance: it's the safest European capital, standard of life is extremely high, it's clean, it has extremely interesting historical centre, that some call miniature Prague. It's small, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.....it has both nice coastline and impressive mountains virtually in a reach of a hand. It has many potentials, and it's a pleasure to be its citizen. Actually, I could be speaking for nearly any Slovene town right now, since they're all extremely impressive and beautiful in their own way.

It's very narrow-minded to say it's nothing special. At least you don't have to dodge pickpockets on any corner, like in Milan, Rome, Venice, Palermo or virtually any other Italian city.

Congratulions bziherl, such a nice example of prejudice! I see european lands are getting closer and closer....thousand and thousands of people from Ex-Jugoslavia moved to Italy for desperation looking for a better life and some of them devoted themself to crime...since i don't know your land, should i judge Slovenians from what i see in my city? I don't think so.Anyway, u're welcome Italy, so you'll be able to see our beautiful cities, places, and sure, our famous pickpockets playing mandolino while eating pizza and pasta...

I think the fact that Ljubljana doesn't look like a capital is actually an advantage.. But it's definitely more of a capital than Vaduz. ;)

And mila, I doubt many Slovenians emigrated to Italy to escape communist rule, the ones that did emigrate went to Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina mostly. What you can see a lot thruout Europe are Bosnians and Serbians, though. I know that Slovenia had a surge of Bosnian immigrants during the Bosnian crisis of the mid-90s. But anyway, the topic is Ljubljana, not our nations' histories.

As I said many times before, I think it's a wonderful city, and I think it really has to do with it's topography. The city centre is squeezed in between the Castle Hill (and subsequently Golovec Hill) and Rožnik Hill, plus the river flows thru there..

Come on now, guys. Don't let this thing get blown all out of proportion, and most of all don't get into :bash: mode, OK? :) That's undignified and unnecessary.

So some people prefer grand, glitzy capital cities while others find it perfectly fine that a smaller country should have such a quaint charmer as Llubljana as its capital.

Conclusion: no reason to go to war! :horse:

On the other hand Ljubljana still has much to do to become a proper city...I must agree on that. I myself very rarely call Ljubljana a "city", so I don't really care whether it's called city or town. After all, I've been to many bigger places than Ljubljana and were not that rarely called towns. So, ...... yeah, I guess we should rather continue posting photos than arguing about irrelevant stuff.

it is on flight international site but you need login password for the access the site...
I'm looking for alternate sources as we speak.

The source of new Slovene fighters is reported to be Dutch MLU F16's.

It is not saying Slovenia has purchased this fighters but states that is it very expensive for Slovenia to continue to receive Italian air force cover when purchasing new fighters would save Slovenia s much as 50 millUS$ in longer term.

The numbers mention where 6-12 F16 fighters at most.

Sadly, Poland hasn't enough to cover its own airspace, let alone that of Slovenia.

But this is a good move, I'm sure Slovenia can afford it(~1bln euros max) but I would prefer it if they chose a European product(Swedish Gripen, French Rafale, etc) rather than the 70's era product from USA.

Most likely Slovenia will go for cheapest option which is MLU F16's from Nederland's, at 8million US$ per aircraft they are cheapest and best option, Slovenia only needs 12 Aircrafts and as whole deal would not cost more than 320 million US$ (includes infrastructure, support, training, logistical support and spare parts).

JAS39 Gripens are nice option to, but price for 12 aircrafts and support would set back Slovenia for 550millUS$. This does not include armaments...

Whole Slovene Defence budget today is only 520 million US$, and I don't think Slovenia will go in to such capitol expenditure unless there is a great offset deal with Sweden.

AZ2SI
June 26th, 2005, 07:15 PM
True, bziherl; I misspoke. The building was already listed as a protected structure before, but the Ministry of Culture issued a firm statement Friday saying that a demolition would not be allowed, considerably lowering the chances of that happening.

The project is very controversial because some see the former Austro-Hungarian army barracks on that site as a cultural monument, while others do not. The height of the proposed skyscraper is also the subject of considerable debate.

What bothers me is that all those people that want the Old Kolizej to stay have absolutely no will to renovate that building! That building is in ruins, and I seriously doubt anyone will do anything about it if that skyscraper isn't built.

The current situation is just waay too shitty to stay this way.. It's either renovation or skyscraper, unfortunately it seems like neither will happen..

This brings me to another question.. Is the renovation of such a dilapidated building even possible?

PPL in UK buy dilapidated Barns (with no roofs) and barely few walls and build luxury house or apartments.
