That is a BAD picture of the Dallas skyline.
Dallas star April 14th, 2009, 03:55 AM I would consider it that BAD, in caps... It's just a not much seen view of Downtown. I can clearly see North Downtown from my house right now and it's very bland (the W sorta added some color) I find that a refreshing view from a different view, plus you can see uptown from above.

A group of area political and civic leaders, as well as football legends such as Roger Staubach and Deion Sanders, are pursuing relocating the College Football Hall of Fame from South Bend, Ind., to downtown Dallas, they announced today.
The group, which includes Mayor Tom Leppert and billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens, says its willing to pay for the entire cost of relocating, building and launching the facility, which would be slated for construction next to a planned Dallas Convention Center hotel at Young, Market and Lamar streets.
"This is a great fooball city. Dallas would be a great place for it. We're a much more accessable city," Leppert said. "They've been very open to the ideas that we're putting forward."
The Dallasites pursuing the College Football Hall of Fame say they're in the process of crafting a formal proposal, which they expect to be finished later this year.
Asked how realisitic moving the College Football Hall of Fame to Dallas is, Leppert said, "we have a lot of work to do," but expressed optimism that hall officials will find Dallas' proposal "very attractive."

Dallas star April 15th, 2009, 01:42 AM ^^ That would be great, especially if Leppert and Pickens are willing too pay for everything, I don't see why this wouldn't happen. It would definitely bring more life too Downtown.
Dallas star April 15th, 2009, 01:43 AM Rail funding bill clears final Senate hurdle
The Senate just seconds ago voted 21-9 to give third and final approval to a bill authored by Sen. John Carona, a measure that would give counties the right to hold elections in which voters can decide to raises their own taxes and other fees to pay for rail expansion in the suburbs.
Communities like Dallas that already invest heavily in transit could ask voters to pay more to fund highway improvements as well. The menu of possible tax increases includes increases of up to 10 cents per gallon of gasoline, higher vehicle registration fees and a new resident "impact fee" for folks who move to Texas and register a car from out of town. (A full list of the possible increases can be found at the end of this article.)
The bill lost some support over the weekend, but still easily passed with no debate. Concerns raised last week by Sen. Steve Ogden about its constitutionality were not entirely resolved, as some of the bill's backers in North Texas had reported last week. Nine senators voted against the bill Tuesday.
It now must pass in the House, where Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Southlake, is its sponsor.
Gov. Rick Perry has said he is concerned about the bill, but has not said he will veto it.

STORY:
Reunion Arena scoreboard comes down; clock is ticking on demolition
02:15 PM CDT on Friday, April 17, 2009
By MARK NORRIS / The Dallas Morning News
mnorris@dallasnews.com
Dallas officials and demolition workers this morning gave details on how Reunion Arena will be taken apart – then lowered the arena's scoreboard.
The work will progress in stages through the spring, summer and fall.
The scoreboard – which drew no bidders last summer during an auction of Reunion memorabilia – will be dismantled over the next few days. There's still a possibility that the scoreboard will be sold, officials said, but nothing has been finalized.
Discussing the overall demolition, city officials repeatedly pledged to recycle materials when possible.
"It will reflect the city’s commitment to the environment," said Martha Welch of the city’s facilities planning and construction office.
The dirty work has begun inside, where crews from A&R Demolition started on Monday. Already the north end of the lower seating bowl has been ripped out, leaving a gaping hole where Reunion Rowdies once sat.
The entire lower bowl will be gone by summer, allowing crews to implode the upper seating bowl. The implosion will occur inside the arena, though, and will not be visible from outside.
Throughout the process, concrete will be finely crushed to be used as fill material.
After the seating bowls are gone, the outer wall of the arena will be taken down, leaving only the roof and its supports. The roof will be demolished by excavators and other large machines.
note;
Sports and Hotel Streets will be blocked during demolition, but will reopen after the work is done.

Ganis April 18th, 2009, 08:48 PM Arlington and Dallas compete for College Football Hall of Fame
BY ANDREA AHLES
aahles@star-telegram.com
It’s another round of Dallas versus Arlington.
On Monday, the city of Dallas announced that it is trying to lure the College Football Hall of Fame, the same museum in South Bend, Ind., that Arlington has been talking to about relocating to the entertainment district since 2005.
"Is it a done deal? No. We are going to have to work hard," said Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. "But clearly we would not be pursuing this unless we had a good sense from our conversations that success was possible."
Dallas wants to place the museum next to its convention center and proposed convention center hotel, about which Dallas residents will vote in May elections. The city has created a task force that would raise private funds to build a new hall of fame.
Although Arlington beat out Dallas for the new Dallas Cowboys stadium, which will open in June, Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said that if it comes down to money, Dallas may have an edge with its private donors.
Arlington initiated talks with the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005. It would place the hall in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium, Cluck said.
The city’s most recent discussions with representatives occurred about two months ago, Cluck said. However, the city has not yet put together any economic incentives for the hall, he said.
"We have not offered a specific proposal because they haven’t asked for one," Cluck said.
The hall of fame is in the middle of a five-year agreement with the city of South Bend that it signed in July 2006. Rumors that the hall might move to North Texas intensified in 2007, when the National Football Foundation, which runs the hall, moved its headquarters to Irving.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed interest in having the hall at his new stadium in Arlington. The team has had discussions with the National Football Foundation, but it is still examining the logistics of locating the hall at the stadium, said Cowboys spokesman Brett Daniels.
"We think it’s something great for our region," said Daniels. "If it’s in Dallas or Arlington, we think it would be a win for the community."
Is it a done deal? No. We are going to have to work hard."
Tom Leppert,
mayor of Dallas
Ganis April 18th, 2009, 08:49 PM Hey D Star. What's your thoughts on the Dallas CC Hotel?
Dallas star April 19th, 2009, 04:42 PM Convention Center Hotel will be great, but possibly empty at many times.

It would be nice if Atlanta had an Arts District with a Sculpture museum and other specialized museums. Unfortunately, the Arts are not as high on the philanthropic totem pole in Atlanta as they are in Dallas, Ft. Worth and Houston.

Ganis April 25th, 2009, 02:21 AM Harwood builds a new tower at the rate of 1 every 3 years. They have been building their district that separates Uptown Dallas from VP since the mid 80's.
I never say anyhting of theirs is dead, just waiting.
TampaMike April 25th, 2009, 05:15 AM Hard to say what their intentions are. BOKA Powell is their main partner in most of their developments and BOKA is also a partner in the Convention Center hotel project. I wouldn't say they are dead, but I would be comfortable saying they pushed back some of their projects, maybe even this one.
Ganis April 25th, 2009, 06:44 AM ....ya, thats what I said. Their master plan will be completed at some points (5 or more towers)
Dallas star April 27th, 2009, 11:19 PM Hmm, I heard that the current owners of VP filed for bankruptcy so idk... Anyhow, I really hope this project can push through.
If I had a choice between this or CC Hotel I'd go for CC Hotel because that region need more activity.
Ganis April 28th, 2009, 12:00 AM The CC Hotel will get built. VP is now under control of a German company (which will hopefully put in more economic living then high end living) and Harwood will eventually finish its master plan.....YES....HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

After Years of Trying to Bring Minor-League Ball to Dallas, Confidence ... and Property
By Robert Wilonsky in Business News for People Who Don't Read Business News, Sports
Thursday, May. 7 2009 @ 10:01AM
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2009/05/ng_t2010weve_done_this_before.php
A couple of weeks back we learned that United League Baseball would be setting up shop on the shores of the Trinity River, in the very same 60-acre spot where Irving-based JPI abandoned its own ambitious plans. So happens that at 3:30 p.m. today, ULB co-founders John Bryant and Byron Pierce are meeting with their architects to finalize their abbreviated time line that has them throwing out the first pitch by next season.
"In my mind, I hope we begin construction mid- to late summer," Pierce tells Unfair Park this morning. "I'm probably going to be told that today. That'll give us plenty of time to build it. I don't want to get into January and have five months to build it and face that squeeze." The W.W. Samuell High grad -- about whom I wrote 10 years ago, as he was reviving the Fort Worth Cats and LaGrave Field -- says he and Bryant have built ballparks on short notice before, including Price Cutter Park in Ozark, Missouri, which is currently without a team.
Two weeks ago, there had been a report that Oak Cliff developer Richard Seib and Bryant and Pierce's Reunion Sports Group hadn't yet bought the property out of foreclosure. Pierce dismisses the piece as a hit piece "written by a competitor for a minor-league rag" and says the Seib has indeed acquired the land. That's the reason Bryant and Pierce are confident Dallas is soon to have its own minor-league team -- because, unlike 2007's failed, forgotten efforts to bring minor-league baseball to downtown, Seib "has the property now," Pierce says. "We didn't then. And property is the key."
Pierce, incidentally, tells Unfair Park that the ballpark will go as planned regardless of Saturday's vote on the convention center hotel. He insists that the April 22 press release wasn't timed to coincide with referendum -- they just wanted to get it out there sooner than later to begin marketing and ticket sales, which Pierce says will commence shortly.
Of course, having a hotel there wouldn't hurt ...
"It would help a little bit if it were to be passed because of the amount of people it would bring in," he says. "And there will be overflow into the amenities we would provide outside of baseball," including a mixed-use development and a water park. "But it doesn't tie into the vote. We just made the announcement to get this thing on track."
As for what the ballpark is going to look like, well, that conceptual rendering is but a glimpse, he says -- an aerial shot that doesn't offer a look at the park's frontage. Because, at the moment, they're not sure what it will look like, only that it will blend in with the rest of the surrounding development. Today, he says, they may have a better idea of how the pieces of the puzzle will fit together.
At the same time Bryant and Pierce are moving forward with the ballpark, Seib's working with the city's Office of Economic Development; its director, Karl Zavitkovsky , will meet with the group this month. (Zavitkovsky 's been in meetings all morning and was unavailable to talk.) But Pierce insists this deal's going to happen -- after 17 years of trying to bring minor-league baseball to Dallas.
"We've been looking in the Dallas area since 1992, 1993," he says. "We looked at the old Burnett Field site for a while, and that was unavailable. ... We worked with Dick on that, and when he got this [property], we hopped in the wagon with him. Independent baseball and affiliated baseball are very prosperous these days. There hasn't been a decline in minor large baseball in 15 years. And it's catching hold in larger cities. Used to be they'd be in cities like San Angelo and Amarillo. But teams in Chicago and St. Louis are doing bustling business now. And just look at Frisco. The populations are so strong. The only difference is the marketing. The big-league teams get front page coverage. Here, you have to fight for every inch of media."
AND A DOWNTOWN WATER PARK.......WOOOOO!!!

Dallas boi August 22nd, 2009, 12:00 PM Harwood International is building a 53 story 550+ ft residential tower called the Lexi. There are no renderings yet!
Dallas boi August 22nd, 2009, 12:03 PM I found out why the victory tower project was cancelled. Ground breaking takes place for Woodall Rodgers deck park in Dallas

The 5.2-acre Woodall Rodgers deck park that some doubted would ever get built took one step closer to reality this morning as officials gathered for a groundbreaking.
The Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation held a celebration in Dallas, marking the end of the five-year planning phase of the urban park that will span across the freeway. The park will stretch three blocks between Pearl and St. Paul streets, linking the Uptown and downtown areas.
"Many people felt this couldn't be done – it's too complicated, too expensive and too much of a challenge for the city of Dallas. Today, we proved them wrong," said Jody Grant, park foundation chairman, during the celebration at the Parkside Condos.

The restaurant in Reunion Tower was finished, but the observation deck and lights haven't been done. Look for those at the end of the year.
As for the Statler, hopefully the Landmark Commission will get the old hotel protected so that it cannot be demolished. I have a feeling that when the park is open the foreign investors will finally sell to someone that wants to reuse it. The park will have lots of interactive LEDs (as indicated on the site plan) and the first lighting for the park will be November 5. Can't reveal much about Main Street, but everything should be up and going by the CityLights festival on November 21. Look for Reunion Tower at the end of the year. It's very exciting!

Willis Winters Gives Us a Slightly Soggy, Kind of Early Walking Tour of Main Street Garden
By Robert Wilonsky in News You Can Actually Use, Actually
Tue., Oct. 27 2009 @ 2:11PM
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2009/10/a_slightly_soggy_kind_of_early.php
Willis Winters, assistant director of the city's Park and Recreation Department, was kind enough to give Unfair Park a tour of the $17-million Main Street Garden this morning -- and by "garden," I mean mud pit and swimmin' hole. Hence, Winters's acknowledgment that, yes, it's quite likely the garden -- the first of several planned downtown parks -- won't be quite ready for its November 13 official debut, especially with more rain in the forecast for week's end.
"The rain is killin' us," says Winters. "We were originally shooting for November 5, and actually there will be quite a bit done by November 5. It will be presentable by November 13. We're trying to prioritize what will be finished right now. There's a slight chance that date will change. But that's due to scheduling, not construction." He's referring to the fact several council members are scheduled to attend the National League of Cities convention in San Antonio that week.
Still, he says, the park's "in good shape" for the November 20 City Lights Christmas-tree lighting ceremony, when DowntownDallas will debut New York-based landscape architect Thomas Balsley's 60-foot-tall tree. (Addison-based Excitement Technologies, which has done work at Cowboys Stadium, is handling the lighting and production, says DowntownDallas's Kourtney Garrett.)
"As you can see, we're trying to work around" the mud and water, Winters says. "All the activity today is on the perimeter, and we're trying to scrape the mud to the center. That's the easiest thing to finish at the last, so now they're just using it as a staging area."
After the jump, Winters walks us through the park's amenities. But first question's first: Will the Lily Pad, the city's first foray into the eat-and-drink business, serve alcohol? "They want to," he says, mentioning beer and wine and the TABC. So, with that out of the way ... jump, but watch the mud.
...
Which brings us to an area that, at present, looks like a cemetery -- but only because, well, it is. What you see here are rescued remnants of buildings that once stood on this part of downtown, which Winters, who's also a noted city historian, was delighted to keep in order to pay homage to downtown's past.
"For example, if you look across the street and look at the limestone on the original Hilton, we took the stone and saved them to redisplay them here," he says, noting that they do, indeed, look like tombstones. "It's an artifact to commemorate the buildings. And there will be an interpretive graphic that will talk about the history of this part of downtown and its development from the 1870s to current day and show how it transformed from small houses to big buildings."
And, finally, our last stop: the stage. Though Winters says there will actually be two -- including a smaller one just to the left of the main one, closer to Commerce Street. Also near there will be the old neon "PARK" sign once directing people to the gold-ringed parking garage that used to sit on the spot. It's being refurbished for installation next month.
"I just love the fact this park is surrounded by so many eras of Dallas architecture," Winter says. "There's the 1913 City Hall, the 1926 Hilton, the Tiches building from the '20s, the Mercantile from the late '40s, the Statler and library form the late '50s and the Comerica building from the '80s. It's surrounded by all these significant buildings, and we felt by putting this park here it would open up all these great vistas and remind people of their prominence and importance."

Insighter December 3rd, 2009, 09:27 PM Thanks for the photos DFW, I haven't been downtown in 7 months. Found the info about the neon "PARK" sign funny, and glad to see it saved. Won't miss the f-ugly gold rings. I hope the Grand will be more attractive to developers now... that end of downtown has needed a shot in the arm for some time. Have they decided to save the old Commerce trading buildings... which haven't been occupied in years. I always thought they're much better than surface parking, but the plan was to raze it.
Love the Mercantile, but I had heard it was loaded with asbestos. What's the latest on that?
I had not heard that the city nixed the plan to put parking under the park... though. The plan does look nice.
Thanks again.
Ganis December 4th, 2009, 05:00 AM I think all the asbestos was cleaned out when it was gutted by Forrest Properties for the conversion.
jbrown84 December 10th, 2009, 04:26 AM The new performing arts complex is impressive!
dfwcre8tive December 10th, 2009, 10:32 PM Love the Mercantile, but I had heard it was loaded with asbestos. What's the latest on that?
Do you mean the Statler Hilton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_Statler_Hilton)? It's still empty, waiting for conversion. Hopefully the new park will help spur interest.
Ganis December 11th, 2009, 03:29 AM I hope the new park spurs an interest in knocking it down and building something better. I think im the only person on this forum and the DFW only one that can not stand the Old Dallas Grand. ITS A WRECK! The floor and ceilings are to close to each other and it has had so many open windows that over the past 10 years it is like Katrina in there.

ShawnOfTheDead January 8th, 2010, 07:05 PM Wow! Dallas is looking beautiful :) Can't believe I haven't been there for more than 2 years now :(
Dallas star January 19th, 2010, 11:03 PM Ha. Main Street gardens looks awesome! I don't remember what the park was to be called but they're going to be installing an "over the highway" park. Too bridge the gap between uptown and downtown. I'll get some pics from my phone next time I pass by.

this is a pretty dinky little park
dfwcre8tive January 22nd, 2010, 06:18 PM this is a pretty dinky little park
The "dinky" park is a great new asset to downtown Dallas. The size doesn't really matter, as long as it's active and brings people to the area (and provides a great space for the surrounding residents). There will be volleyball and other activities during the week and movie series/concerts on the weekends. Everything should be finished and opened for spring.

Dallas star January 27th, 2010, 01:06 AM Pictures up: please note the quality and image SUCK. I snapped them all off in literally under a minute, because I was in a big rush. Anyhow, I'll take some decent ones when I have more time, and it isn't raining.

One of the most important parks ever developed in Dallas received a major private donation Monday.
JPMorgan Chase officials announced the company is giving $3 million to fund the development of the Woodall Rodgers Deck Park that will one day link downtown to Uptown and, for a few blocks at least, mitigate the physical divisions created by the city's freeway system.
The park's main mall, a crescent-shaped, tree-lined walkway that will run the length of the 5.2 acre park, will be named the Chase Promenade in recognition of the donation.

dfwcre8tive February 2nd, 2010, 07:19 AM The new Dallas Area Plan, called Dallas 360, is now under development. The results will be presented this summer and will show ways to link areas of activity in and around downtown (and make everything much more pedestrian-friendly). There are several presentations here at the website: http://www.downtowndallas360.com/
There's an update the news reported on today: http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/02/downtown-dallas-plan-at-key-st.html
Dallas star February 17th, 2010, 11:05 PM Hey DFWCr8tive, it think it's time for a new thread are you in? I'll see if I can get a moderator too agree, and I'll add the new list of construction/proposed/UC.

Contact Jmancuso and ask to have a new thread created once this one hits 1,000. I'm pretty sure a new thread is created once a thread hits 1,000.

Just to add on some more. Just say that a couple people agree that a new thread should be created because the user that posted the list of developments on the first page is inactive and this thread is almost 5 years old from the first post.
