60 Wall Street
New York, USA

HEIGHT: 227m/745 feet
FLOORS: 55 floors
COMPLETION: 1989
ARCHITECT: Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates

was built in 1988-1989 as the new headquarters building for the J. P. Morgan Bank.
The massive facade of this 227 m tall, 50-storey neo-Classical building is horizontally striped in alternating bands of dark glass and white stone. The roof, in the shape of a cut pyramid, is "supported" by faceted corner pilasters topped with twin columns just underneath the roof corners.

The building's large size and bulk of 158,000 m² was enabled by a transfer of air-rights across the street, from the Citibank at 55 Wall Street.

There is a colonnade at the street level and the vast public arcade where columns support a gold-toned mosaic ceiling with recessed lattices, the column capital fans illuminated by hidden lights.

The building was obtained by Deutsche Bank in 2001 for $600 million, but relocated 4,500 more of its personnel there only after being unable to find buyers in the post-9/11 downturn.

Hehe, yea, it's a pretty bad photo though. The lobby is quite funky and changes with each owner of the building (Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan etc.). At one point it was all white with aluminum palm trees...... that would have been the cocaine 80's!

I don't think this building fits too well in the financial district, but the collumned areas at the top are novel and were built to increase rents for "corner offices". It could have been just another box though, for that I'll give it a 7.5 ;)

8.5/10 - I like the sleek facade; it really dances with the light, and there's a good contrast between glass and stone. The columns at the top work very well, and help pull everything together, since they echo the columns along the base. And the indentations at the corners save it from being boxy.

My biggest quibble is the roof, which doesn't seem to fit the rest of the building - they should have done something with a series of smaller setbacks, and a setback or two near the street might have worked well too.

Too busy in parts where not necessary, yet too simplified where it could have taken in a bit more detail. Doesn't at all look its full height. Some nice materials.

The top proportions are completely disgracious. I hate those columns.

Love this building since the day it opened. Its really big but fsits right in in tis little enclave on the super narrow streets of lower manhattan. It works being half hidden away. If it had been in midtown manhattan it would have a huge plaza im sure and a large lobby and i might not like it as much. Is works for me as a hidden surprise you find when exploring wall st and all the other windy downtown roads. I love the design and the coloumns and the roof. Its really tall but you dont realize it cause its flanked by taller ones, trump blg, chase manhattan, Am International. But it looks so cool.

One of the ugliest of NYC. It´s bulky, grotesque, pretentious and the pillars are ridiculous. But most of all, it killed part of the lower Manhattan skyline by being built right in the middle of the classic trio 20 Exchange, 40 Wall and American International. The soaring elegant Art Deco jewel that is American International once stood tall as one of the New York highlights and is now overwhelmed by this monster. The biggest mistake since the PanAm building.
