enzo December 30th, 2002, 08:37 AM 60 Wall Street
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 227m/745 feet
FLOORS: 55 floors
COMPLETION: 1989
ARCHITECT: Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates
was built in 1988-1989 as the new headquarters building for the J. P. Morgan Bank.
The massive facade of this 227 m tall, 50-storey neo-Classical building is horizontally striped in alternating bands of dark glass and white stone. The roof, in the shape of a cut pyramid, is "supported" by faceted corner pilasters topped with twin columns just underneath the roof corners.
The building's large size and bulk of 158,000 m² was enabled by a transfer of air-rights across the street, from the Citibank at 55 Wall Street.
There is a colonnade at the street level and the vast public arcade where columns support a gold-toned mosaic ceiling with recessed lattices, the column capital fans illuminated by hidden lights.
The building was obtained by Deutsche Bank in 2001 for $600 million, but relocated 4,500 more of its personnel there only after being unable to find buyers in the post-9/11 downturn.

Bobdreamz December 30th, 2002, 09:06 AM nice looking building but the roof screams for a crown or spire!!!...aren't these the same architects who designed Atlanta's Bank of America tower...???.....8/10.
RafflesCity December 30th, 2002, 12:14 PM 8.5/10
Great pics! The facade is nice and crisp, and I like the ornamentation at the top. It adds diversity to the style of its surroundings.
SteelCity32 December 30th, 2002, 11:43 PM it's ok. looks good around ny's other highrises.
7.5/10
Sunflower December 31st, 2002, 01:13 AM The facade is just right but I don't like the roof which spoils it a bit.
7.5/10
Sunflower December 31st, 2002, 01:16 AM btw luckily we're not rating interiors because that one's pretty nasty...
SeeMacau December 31st, 2002, 02:00 AM Looks very good

enzo December 31st, 2002, 02:49 AM btw luckily we're not rating interiors because that one's pretty nasty...
Hehe, yea, it's a pretty bad photo though. The lobby is quite funky and changes with each owner of the building (Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan etc.). At one point it was all white with aluminum palm trees...... that would have been the cocaine 80's!
I don't think this building fits too well in the financial district, but the collumned areas at the top are novel and were built to increase rents for "corner offices". It could have been just another box though, for that I'll give it a 7.5 ;)
Noonos December 31st, 2002, 06:23 AM nice! I like thee columns
Liz L December 31st, 2002, 02:16 PM 8.5/10 - I like the sleek facade; it really dances with the light, and there's a good contrast between glass and stone. The columns at the top work very well, and help pull everything together, since they echo the columns along the base. And the indentations at the corners save it from being boxy.
My biggest quibble is the roof, which doesn't seem to fit the rest of the building - they should have done something with a series of smaller setbacks, and a setback or two near the street might have worked well too.
Wu-Gambino December 31st, 2002, 09:11 PM Good 8
AG January 2nd, 2003, 01:45 AM A great building, it fits in well with American International, the roof is well done, and the glass and columns look fine too.
8.5/10
Tony 175 January 4th, 2003, 07:11 AM For some reason i dont like the density around it. It doesnt get any shine. But i like the design so i give it an 8.:D
SUNNI January 4th, 2003, 02:16 PM a little boxy, but nice design..
7/10
Dan January 6th, 2003, 10:05 AM The design just doesn't work well with me. I have to give it a 5.5.
Muse January 7th, 2003, 10:26 AM Too busy in parts where not necessary, yet too simplified where it could have taken in a bit more detail. Doesn't at all look its full height. Some nice materials.

Jeff from Winnipeg February 15th, 2003, 05:48 AM In some of those pics it doesn't look like it fits in too well. I'm not a big fan of it, but it is kinda interesting to look at... ->7/10
Andy6 February 16th, 2003, 02:21 AM Vile. Incoherent. 5/10.
MiCH February 23rd, 2003, 01:52 PM They could have left out those silly columns at the top...I don't like postmodernism in skyscrapers. 5.5/10
Francis20 February 25th, 2003, 01:39 PM i like the facade. the top spoils my view of it.
i gave it a 6.5!
The Messiah March 8th, 2003, 04:41 PM One of the best in Lower Manhatten. And there are so many great towers there! 8.5/10
renell March 8th, 2003, 05:06 PM 7. the top part looks cool:cool: but the tower is quite an "outcast" compared to the classics surrounding it
Subdude March 9th, 2003, 02:25 AM Ill-proportioned and chunky. Looks blocky despite the detailing. 4
Monkey April 4th, 2003, 09:38 AM Well, someone tried awfully hard here to give us a lively fassade. This is laudable in principle, but this one looks too fussy, worked over just a tad too much. 6.5
Mr. Detroit April 9th, 2003, 04:57 AM Not horrible for an 80's building. But I don't like the roof. 6/10
Evergrey April 11th, 2003, 12:47 AM 8 A very nice building with an absurd roof... I quite like the use of glass... and especially those glass columns near the top... nice shape to this one
enzo April 11th, 2003, 01:45 AM I just noticed this......

AtlanticaC5 August 23rd, 2003, 06:43 PM It's too bulky, it would have looked better if it had a "real" pyramid-roof...but it's tall, though. 7.5/10

David3820 September 11th, 2004, 11:14 PM I don't know it just doesn't do much for me and looks kind of weird to me and not that good in NYC. It's not much one of my type's either mostly because of the roof and don't like the look the otagonal windows at the top give it but I thinks it's colour scheme is right for the building. 4.5/10

NY1 February 6th, 2005, 01:48 AM ok, but the lobby is hideous. it looks like the architect was trying to five you the feeling as if you were in some S. American country or some place with a warm climate with the palm trees. It failed horribly, besides this is Wall St. NYC not Miami.

habitat67 August 28th, 2005, 08:25 PM I worked on Wall St. for many years -- I dreaded passing this building every single day. There is a subway entrance in the lobby -- the lobby is such an eyesore -- trellice work with mirrors behind it... gag!
hella good August 29th, 2005, 11:00 PM LOVE this building, in real life the lobby is gorgeous and breathtaking!

Pengui November 16th, 2005, 06:43 AM A rather pretentious design that doesn't quite make it.
The top proportions are completely disgracious. I hate those columns.
That's too bad because the lower-middle parts are very nice with a beautiful cladding and an impressive lobby entrance.
Oh well.

Scruffy88 January 9th, 2006, 07:27 AM Love this building since the day it opened. Its really big but fsits right in in tis little enclave on the super narrow streets of lower manhattan. It works being half hidden away. If it had been in midtown manhattan it would have a huge plaza im sure and a large lobby and i might not like it as much. Is works for me as a hidden surprise you find when exploring wall st and all the other windy downtown roads. I love the design and the coloumns and the roof. Its really tall but you dont realize it cause its flanked by taller ones, trump blg, chase manhattan, Am International. But it looks so cool.

TheNightfly January 25th, 2007, 12:55 PM One of the ugliest of NYC. It´s bulky, grotesque, pretentious and the pillars are ridiculous. But most of all, it killed part of the lower Manhattan skyline by being built right in the middle of the classic trio 20 Exchange, 40 Wall and American International. The soaring elegant Art Deco jewel that is American International once stood tall as one of the New York highlights and is now overwhelmed by this monster. The biggest mistake since the PanAm building.

Great building. Don't know why everyone is talking so much about the overrated "Dubai style architecture". When this building (one of many others in same style from that period) was build in 1989, Dubai only had a few lowrises, whick mostly looked like commieblocks.
