For those who haven't heard there has been/still is a bomb scare at Knox Shopping Centre in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. The "suspicious package", concealed in a Myer bag was a cylinder with a flashing red light and wires bugling out of the bag. It was discovered by a security guard shortly after 10:15 this morning.

The story was the leading news item tonight, albeit brief. At 6:30 there was no official word and the bomb squad and police were still not letting shop owners enter and close up. This got me thinking on two fronts;

- If it was a bomb wouldn't it have gone off well and true before 6:30 (unless it was a dud) so it could maximise damge? Surely the bomber wouldn't have set it to go off at after the centre closed?

- If it wasn't a bomb why have they been going until 6:30 + and there still hasn't been any word? If it is a hoax why has it taken so long to check it out and clarify things - I know it is to be treated seriously but with the technology these days the bomb squad should be able to give it the all clear early on.



Anyway, as I'm writing this it turns out it's been reported as a hoax. There goes 5 minutes of amature journalism.

Whoa, My cousins live clsoe to the shopping centre (Wantrina South, in fact) but anyway, why pick Knox?

We up here in Brisbane didn't have any mention of it, except a quick snippet on the radio news at 5:30.

so it was a hoax, how amusing, it certainly worked though, as it got the attention of a lot of people.

The people who did the hoax should be punished in some way as it disrupted people's incomes & daily routine, plus waster police time and also created un-necessary alarm.
