Raysthlm, liz and Divineator, I was reading your little argument over what constitutes an most impressive skyline with a laugh.

Below my rambling and skyscrapers analysis is purely out of utter boredom at work and for the fun of it.

Although Raysthlm, the fact that he is living in Bangkok -most likely knowing its city scape quite well (and me too) and therefore appreciates its highrises-, is a bit too critical over other peoples score ratings (e.g. divineator while he/she gave Bangkok a very decent 7 score), I understand where Raysthlm is coming from.

Although I absolutely agree with anyone that cityscape judgement is a very personal thing, City "Skylines" can mainly be interpreted in 2 ways: by 1 indeed as e.g. suggested cityscape, lightling, iconic views, locations and buildings, e.g. doesn't necessary have to be tall buildings, and 2. more specifically an impressiveness of partial views of (many) tall buildings (e.g. skyscrapers) in front of the sky backdrop. Strictly speaking #2 is what a Skyline means, and big cities like e.g. New York, Chicago and Hong Kong are famous for this.

A city with a lot of highrises is, at least in Modern Asia, the Americas, Middle East, often a sign of business oppportunities and prosperity (ofcourse this is a slightly different story for Europe).

The reason why Raysthlm is so critical is because what people might not know is that Bangkok is considerably underrated based on particularly the 2nd interpretation of a skyline. This might be as it is located in Asia, and ignored due to attention hubs like Hong Kong, Singapore and KL, who rightfully so get a good International share of attention in terms of business opportunities, importance and skyline and perhaps because good/nice skyline pictures from Bangkok are not widely available.

Why underrated? Because many would find it surprising to know that Bangkok is trailing the few worlds largest skyline cities on close foot. For the fun of it, I have compiled a detailed account of the number of highrises in cities. It only lists the very largest cities with most highrises in the world (and Berlin for a comparison) and I used the information from skyscraperpage.com, which I can confidently say has the most detailed list of skyscrapers, more than e.g. emporis or CTBUH.

As you will see, when it comes down to skyscraper density Bangkok ranks #5 in the world with 410 highrises over 100m, after traditional giants as New York, Shanghai and Hong Kong and closely trailing Tokyo (you wouldn't expect that huh?). Going a step higher, Bangkok ranks a strong 6th place with more than 130 highrises over 150m (if you included all highrises that are proposed) and a 7th place when only counting constructed/U/C just behind Chicago. As a comparison people often associate massive numbers of skyscraper density with e.g. Sao Paulo, however you will realise Bangkok has more than twice as many skyscrapers than Sao Paulo (and not to speak, sao paulo has only 1 over 150m). Such details honestly came a bit as a pleasant surprise to myself as well!

When moving along the height, Bangkok still stands strong with 49 skyscrapers over 180m on 9th position. After that height in Bangkok stalls and is taken over by several impressers who build the few supertalls. If only Bangkok follows that trend and plants its own versions of Petronas Towers, Willis Towers or a Burj Khalifa, it will get its rightful attention it would deserve.

Quite clearly Asia and the Middle East are literally on the rise, and surely there are other massive cities coming up in Asia outrunning Bangkok in height, e.g. honorable mentions go to all the major cities in China (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc.), and ofcourse no city can (yet) beat the giants like New York, Dubai (with 23 highrises over 300m!!), Shanghai and Chicago.

Anyways, that’s my analysis of the meaning of skylines. For me it does come down to density as well, and ofcourse supertalls count and for others again it’s the scenery that’s more important. And then again I can’t deny the fact that while currently living in Bangkok I do promote it a bit myself. Enjoy the statistics below.

Actually I am from Stockholm/Sweden, I moved to Bangkok for a couple of years but moved back to Stockholm 8 years ago, I am Half Thai/Swedish.

People are just so ignorant when it comes to Bangkok for some reason. International media paints up Bangkok as the hell place on earth and make it look undeveloped as hell, just look at Hangover 2 for example and recently I just saw Gordon Ramsays "great escape" in Bangkok, which was not very nice as well, especially when they showing the skyline of Bangkok, which was 5 skelleton buildings located a bit outside the big skyscraper heaven(which today is being built again).

Many people (which never been there) thinks that Bangkok is a town filled with shanty towns and temples, because that is how international media paints it up as. Even Thailand paints them self up as this little cute town with dirty food markets, elephants and temples. So I just wonder why media never show Bangkok on the good side. I mean it is all over the place, just look at this modern monster city. :D

Yep I do fully agree with you RaySthlm. It's easy to paint one-sided pictures, particularly with Bangkok as it features such a very diverse cityscape, with distinctive old and new town areas, although you have to agree with me that Bangkoks old, dirty and unorganised town areas still have by far a dominating tendency. E.g. when I need to go to Football games on Sukhumvit 105, when you visit BangNa, PinKlao, outer Sukhumvit area, e.g. anywhere passed Sathorn, Phloenchit, Asoke, Ratjadapisek, Ari or Thonglor, e.g. the BTS line) you have the feeling you're right back to the real Asia, 3rd world country feelings from a Western POV. Shanty towns, hmm not as many as people would think, but this is what constitutes the (Asian) shanty idea of cities in Europe and America. That is not to say that I agree that the progressiveness and modernity of a city should definitely be promoted in e.g. cities like Bangkok.

I know that the TAT was heavily against Hangovers' 2 portrayal of Bangkok/Thailand, but what to do if the movie director has a scenario in mind...

Bangkok has a messy unorganised skyline, but the sheer amount of highrises make it a 7/10 for me, not my type of skyline but it's impressive.

One thing that Bangkok has going against it is that it's built on flat land. I think hills and mountains nearby or in a city really adds to a cityscape and skyline, like San Franscisco, Hong Kong, or Edinburgh.

Very, very, very interesting chart ! If you allow me I will borrow it for discussion on a Brazilian forum.
I am absolutely shocked with Bangkok's density. Never in my wild dreams I had the impression it was so dense ( not even reading and seeing a lot of pictures about the city since I have plans of visiting Thailand soon).
You guys are probably right about the media not showing the reality.
Anyway... enjoyed your post and love this thread.

The slum shown in that pic doesn't exist, must be from somewhere else, cos it's certainly not along the expressway leading to the airport.

This clip by Pansori shows you the real view from the City to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

ZokaFrodSRk

Don't believe in anything that was show in that movie. They try to portray Thailand as a third world country like they always do in Hollywood films. Most of the facts are made up, like Thailand occasionally experience a blackout

btw thank you Malaysia for donating to Thai flood.

This post summarize it best.

I just saw this movie in a cinema today and I'm totally disappointed. I knew it was going to suck with the same storyline but a different location. But I didn't expect it to also look down on Bangkok and Thailand to such a level that I actually felt ashame to be a Thai walking out of that cinema. :ohno:

For the storyline, if you have seen the Hangover 1 already, don't bother paying for this 2nd episode. It has basically the same storyline and same old lame jokes. I did not have a single honest laugh from watching this at all. It's not like the laughs and joy I had watching other comedies where you can sincerely lol with it.

This also shows how shallow and ignorant some Americans are toward other countries besides theirs. I bet in their heads, Thailand was a third-world, undeveloped, poor-stricken country where traces of civilizations and a developed world were not to be seen and you can get drugs and cheap prostitutes everywhere you go. Bangkok must be full of slum areas, old dirty houses, narrow streets full of beggars and rubbish. If the reality does not fit with this concept of Bangkok, distort it !! .... shit ... :bash:

Here are some debunks I can think of from Allen's "fun facts" about Thailand in his stupid "fact cards" that he carries around in the movie ... (obviously put there just to suit with the storyline, not for accuracy, by the director)

- Thailand's major export revenue is from rice, fisheries and footwear. --> Nice ... Go on, make us look like a 3rd world country feeding ourselves on making Nike's and Adidas's for Americans. If they would just do a little more research or simply googling it up, they would also see the majority of our export revenue comes from the industrial sector for almost a decade or more, with automobiles, computers, electrical appliances leading the way. We are one of the biggest exporters of rice, yes, but revenue-wise, it is not the largest chunk.

Just 5 minutes googling and I already found this old 2006 stats of our export revenues by categories to the US alone. I'm pretty sure if I spend a little more time with it, I can get more accurate and up-to-date info from the BOI or s'thing.

http://www.suite101.com/content/top-thai-exports-imports-a30309

and this news summarizing the outlook of Thailand's auto industry and how it is set to be the Detroit of Asia.
http://www.biztechreport.com/story/633-growth-automobile-industry-thailand

- Thailand has 12K death each year from car accidents. --> Yes, I don't deny that. But compare that 12K with 65M population and the same statistics from other countries, is there significant indication that you are likely to get killed driving a car in Thailand than the others? Again, 5 minutes reading Wiki already landed me with this stats comparing death rates from road accident per 100K people per year of different countries. True that the figure is high for Thailand, but is it like extraordinarily too high that being run over by a truck is such a common thing that happens often in everyday life like how the movie tries to imply? I'd say no.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate

- Bangkok suffers from frequent blackout because the country is not capable of generating enough electricity. --> Again, another attempt to make us look like some 3rd-world country with insufficient power generation capacity. Can anyone sincerely say that living in Bangkok, or any freaking village in Thailand for that matter, requires you to get use to frequent blackout? We have enough electrical generation capacity to meet the demand with rooms to spare for decades. True you might have seen some blackouts rarely, but most, if not all, are from accidents like a truck crashing into transmission lines or s'thing that requires technicians some times to repair the system. But it is not from insufficient generation capacity to such a degree that the gov must take the entire grid off at a certain time of day everyday. The movie just made up this plain lie to suit the storyline and that's it. It's just because Ted is supposed to get stuck in an elevator. So they came up with this frequent blackout bullshit :bash:

This is from 2 minutes googling and reading wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Thailand

There are other small things here and there that I cannot list them all here. E.g., how they try so hard to present Bangkok like a big ghetto of Asia, how we travel around the city using old crappy สองแถวแดง and not the more common air-con'ed taxies and BTS, how the main characters ride a speed boat from BKK all the way to Krabi in just a day (this shows how stupid Americans are when it comes to geography of other parts of the world except America), and the list goes on and on. :ohno:

Simply put, watching paint dry might be more entertaining. I give this movie a big D.

That is why people which never been to Bangkok look so stupid. Some even wonder if people in Bangkok have supermarkets or if people are riding elephants to work lol. One friend which studied in the states had some host parents which took her to wallmart and asked her if she was impressed of going to wallmart....haha, my god that is stupid, and no, that is not the expressway from airport to downtown Bangkok. If you have seen "Entrapment" you would know how good hollywood is at adding digital slum. In "Entrapment" they added fake, digital slum in Kuala Lumpur, I was smart enough to know that it was not real.

The room they were staying was also filmed in L.A. and those cars on the expressway (which I have never seen before).. pfft I say. The cars in BKK are more colorful than that, they have to try harder, oh wait they're not even trying

Most of the things shown in most movies don't exist
Like in that movie '2012' most of those buildings aren't even real and they moved many landmarks closer to each other for dramatic effect. (i.e. They had the Randy's Donut's giant doughnut rolling through West LA when they are about 15 miles apart)

When I planned to move back from Europe to Bangkok after graduation (2008), my grandmother was concerned as to whether I would be well off in, she assumed, such a poverty-stricken and third-world city. I politely asked her: Moesje (nickname), did I already show you a picture of Bangkok, the city I will be going to? She: "No no, show me dear! How exciting." So I presented a nice large panorama of the whole Phloenchit/Wireless Road/Ratchadamri area, and the first thing she said: "...Is this Bangkok....?" and pretty much silence after. After that I think she was relieved. I always make sure I carry some stunning skyscraper pictures on my iPhone for those people I share city stories with or friends/people who are curious. I always manage to WoW them with a "is that Bangkok?!, looks like something like New York", and I chuckle, and share all the exciting experiences that I had/have in this city

Until age of 28 my picture of Thailand had been largedly formed by the old movie "The King and I" where Yul Brynner played the king (a cute and lovely movie, Thailand should lift the ban, I imagine most Thai would love it) and a picture of two muay thai boxers.

The poorest area in a city will be always called as slum. Except Mumbai slum is covered a very huge area in urban as we know all the time. U guys can check from internet that slum does exist in LA, Detroit, Paris, Rio, Montreal, Toronto and other city that u though is advanced.

In KL, for me, slum is not 100% cleared. Asian just dont have hollywood and other media like CNN or BBC to enlarge the ugly side of a city in world wide level.

I know international media very well. They always tend to show the worst of the worst.

For example, Swedish news show picture of "city of Bangkok will be overfloded" with skyline of old part of Bangkok with only old buildings, after that they visit a Thai family in Bangkok which house been overfloded, and ofcourse the house has to be a slum.

The views of the Bangkok from Baiyoke II are incredible. Bangkok will be even taller within the next 20 years which is cool for skyscraper fanatics but certainly isn't necessary to maintain Bangkok's unique feel and insane energy and large size.

It depends on the places where you decide to stay or hang around, if you stay around Khoasarn Road the place that is more likely for backpacker which may consider to save their budget. Possibly that they may find guesthouse at khoasarn Rd. that room's fee for one month is cheaper than one night in downtown e.g. Rajdamri, Rajprasong. No matter how long of the trip is, they do not worry about their money in the pocket.

Even in Thailand where some say "the place that you can live like a King without paying King's ransom" but you know there is always a remark on the bottom of all posters, so if you need the most comfortable trip with very excellent servicing and surrounded by many elegant shopping malls or even get a deep breath of O2 at central park of Bangkok near your luxurious hotel....You need to pay. On the other hand, if you deem that all factors what I mentioned above are easily found in Europe and you need some adventures with Thai Tuk-Tuk and absorb one of the most vibrant street life in the world where is a paradise of food, nightlife and also heavenly place for all shoppers provided high quality with low price. To experienced that with a saving budget, you definitely see some dirty and smelly place but trust me even in the most developed country still has dirty and smelly place, what do you say? Here below are some guarantees.

^^if Google not leads me to misinterpretation, this is a very nice review. I well believe that Bangkok's skyline will be more expansive and well-organized as I see something happen with many new upcoming projects in Bangkok be more concerned with the location and architectural design, some on the project wait lists are designed by Gensler, Leeser, OMA and other international architecture firms are going to rise, these building will form a new skyline together in the near future and it is undoubted that the skyline will be more unique and much more impressive. I will wait until your next visit and your review will be required again. See you in Thailand:)

Bangkok big skyline is still expanding! Look to the left at the new CBD, Ratchada forming a clustre!
Can't wait, when the new supertall Mcot complex starts to rise there, as well as Makkasan complex on that big empty plot in the middle :okay:

We're not ashamed, no one here has said that they're ashamed. Canals and river are part of thai life and culture and I don't find them ugly.

Since this is a skyline thread, we would appreciate if you post skyline pics and not canal pics, but since you seems to like canals and river, I will make an exception this time.

Well, i don't really see any problem depicting the ugly side of Bangkok here, simply because its nothing new anywhere else. All cities have their fair share of their bad side.

But Bangkok is Bangkok, considered as one of the finest cities in Asia. Long live the City of Angels......Bangkok!

I'd love to go back there again.

How nice of you, coming here posting slums pictures of Bangkok.
Now you're posting only good SELECTIVE suburban pics of KL, while again posting old pics of Bangkok and her slums.
Pictures do lie and Malaysia is a great example, you are just better at hiding it.

You seem to like slums, but you don't have to travel far to see them. It's right there in Malaysia too. ;)

BKK had less than 7 million in 2008 (probably it's even less now than in 2008). Even adding all adjacent provinces population of BKK metro region is below 12 million. BKK is large, but not that large.

The correct official number is 5.9 million registered residents. But we all know there's more. The official greater Bangkok (+Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakarn, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom) is around 11 million OFFICIAL registered residents. This is the 2010 number from official registration. So I reckon greater Bangkok is a city of 12+ million.

In other matters, this whole slummy "debate" is a rather funny attempt from a Malaysian troll......Thai people gladly admit that we have slums and we have lots of work to do, but 99% of Thai people get sick and tired of your doublespeak where you like to say you love this place, but post only slummy pics. Maybe its cause you love those slums after all?Why "you"? I only made a comment about Bangkok's population size, nothing else.

PS:
Everybody who has been in Bangkok knows there still is a very visible amount of precarious and degraded housing around, though rather in a more dispersed way coexisting side by side with better buildings and not so much concentrated in form of large slums (with some rare exceptions). Anybody staying in Bangkok for a while has to be completely blind not to take notice of that.

:applause: 10/10 --- Gorgeous city!! Aside from the attractive development characteristics of Bangkok. The uniqueness of Bankgok's high energy, excitement, shopping, nightlife, diversity, food, climate, etc is unique from a world wide perspective which also makes Bangkok such a wonderful city and gives Bangkok qualities that other SE Asian and Asian cities don't have.
