I must say after looking back to the first pages, I think Bangkoks skyline was not that good (2002). It has really changed a lot in 9 years, still changing with over 200??? more skyscrapers under construction/planned etc.

^^ Well to me it looks like the skyline was filled in, defintiely gotten taller and expanded, but you said the second pic was a little higher up so I don't know how many of those buildings in the far corner of the image were built in the last 20 years (most I'm assuming).

I can't see the red building, did it get torn down? :/

What I love about Bangkok is that amidst all these highrises, the temples and the palaces have been very well preserved.

I was 2 weeks ago in Bangkok and impressed by the city life and urban style. Modern and old are very close, like poor and rich infrastructure, amazing for an European to see.:)

Oh well here we go again... As I stated in the other thread: If you read my rank list again, you will notice that the number 10 is obviously ironic. In my view, both Tokyo and Seoul have mediocre skylines. Thats why I wrote like "Tokyo? Nah scratch that I'll pick Seoul instead".

And woah woah woah, who's being ignorant now? Chongqing's skyline is far from horrible, we all know U-shaped rivers usually generates great skylines (New York, Shanghai etc). And BTW, we are not rating cities by the "standard" of their buildings, we are rating them by the beauty of their skylines. If we rated cities by the standard of the buildings, cities like Stockholm and Vienna would be in the top.

In order to get back on topic, I must say something about Bangkok's skyline. And I only have one question: Where are the outstanding towers? Baiyoke Tower 2 looks like shit IMO. I'm waiting for your reply, and I'm sure you are eager to defend Bangkok since you're obviously from Sweden. :lol:

Can we please cut down on the crap with this city vs. city shit? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. If you like it, you have my thanks. If you don't like it, fine as well. No need to talk trash to the others to increase anyone's ego here.

The fact that I live in Bangkok (I'm from Europe) ofcourse makes me support its quite impressive skyline and makes me follow its infrastructure development all around the city on close foot.

One thing that particularly interests me is the city's growth in the past 2 decades, and particularly in recent years. This is isn't uncommon in today's Asian cities, and there are plenty of rising cities far ahead of Bangkok in terms of size & architecture. Bangkok however already being a considerable metropolis with a considerable number of skyscrapers, still is a very SE Asian city that has huge space for growth and development, both in terms of buildable land/plots/areas as well as notable architectures, structures and skyline areas.

Its clear that investors and developers are again becoming more confident in Bangkoks/Thailands business, which is visible by the various quite bold design projects currently under construction, proposed or just finished (Maha Nahkon, Magnolia, the proposed Lumphini Night Bazaar redevelopment area, Sathorn Square, The River, Central Embassy, Noble Phloenchit, St. Regis, Millenium Residence, just to name a few). Furthermore various large long-ago abandoned projects such as Palladium Square are picking up contruction again which are good signs.

Bangkok will soon feature two 300m+ skyscrapers and has over thirty 180m+ skyscrapers. The city is sprawled, the density is getting there and real skyscraper clusters are slowly forming. What it really needs right now are some real iconic supertalls of 400m such as those in Shanghai or Guangzhou to really set it on the world map of impressive skylines.

I'd be very curious to see how Bangkok will grow in the next 10 - 20 years. I wouldn't be surprised to see it rising higher to the sky and will indeed feature such iconic architectural masterpieces not too far from now. Let's see how the still available landplots in the downtown area will be used in the near future!

I bet on 2015 for the first 400m+ skyscraper in Bangkok.

I'm looking forward to the new CPN's project on the old Suan Lum night bazaar plot. They have announced their intention to build the tallest skyscraper in Thailand there. The plot has been cleared already, although the latest render hasn't been released yet. Given its perfect location next to a big park, the plot size, its proximity to an underground MRT station and being right smack in the middle of the CBD, I think the design will be truely iconic and might reach 400+ m.

With this one being 400+ and the two other supertalls at 314 and 310 (Maha Nakhon and BY2), the skyline will be much more complete :okay:

Big and nice skyline, it will get alot better in the next view years, with the River 266 meter T/O, MAHA NAKHON-The Ritz Carlton Residences+Edition Hotel, 75 Storey, 314 M U/C and the Cappella Hotel and Residences 73 storey, 286 meter U/C and not to forget The Magnolias Ratchaprasong, 60 Storey and a height of 239 meter.

Bangkok is in my top 4 favorite skylines in the world. Besides Bangkok's gorgeous skyline...the city itself is one of a kind. :)

Bangkoks skyline is really massive, so it is unique by its own because not many cities in the world have massive skyscraper skylines. Sure it would be nice with some landmark building (which is being built now), but if you look at Kuala Lumpur for example, it has a landmark building(s) with petronas tower but the rest of the skyline looks rather weak, and I am not being rude back with you because you are from Kuala Lumpur, just being honest :), but I would rather have petronas tower in Bangkok than Baiyoke 2 for example ;).

In my opinion, a good skyline doesn't have to be a massive skyline. Looks at Sao Paolo or Mexico City. Both cities have huge skylines....but both are equally messy, not very well planned and buildings are not really nice.

I like Bangkok's large buildings, much less so the smaller ones. For a city of such economic power it is very strange to see so incredibly many ill-mantained buildings. It is worse than in any large city I ever visited (with the exception of slum areas). There is a zillion of truly hideous looking buildings which are absolute eyesores. As much as it is part of that typical "Bangkok flavour", I think it is a pity. It could be easily remedied with a lick of paint, preferably not of the boring ubiquitous white colour, which quickly get's dirty after a couple of raining seasons. Saigon in Vietnam is proof what a difference colour can make.

HK and Shanghai are wow-factors, Singapore is not a wow factor. For me I am more impressed with a huge skyline rather than a small skyline which Singapore has. Singapore reminds me a lot of LAs skyline which is nice and cute but doesnt give you any wow-factor what so ever. :)

Agree with you, in the old parts of Bangkok it seems like time stood still or something. It is not lack of money, many of them living in those buildings are wealthy, they don't wanna expose their wealth to others. Some are probably just lazy or something or wanna spend the money on expensive cars :lol:. An old shophouse located in a good area of Bangkok is worth many millions of baht.

I don't agree with you on your comparison between Singapore and LA. I think LA skyline is so small for such a big city, and the buildings are mostly outdated. Singapore skyline, though not very big, is packed with sleek buildings....and a lot of them are more than 200m.

Singapore and LAs skyline is very similar by the size and height, not style of the buildings.

Shanghai ( Huang Pu River)
Singapore (Marina Bay)
Hong Kong ( Victoria Habour & hill just behide the CBD)

No, a lot of wealthy thais do lives and do their business in those shop houses.

To give you an example, there was an incident where a pharmacy shop owner refused to leave his home (it was to make way for the MRT purple line). He demanded 70 million baht for compensation, but they (MRTA) would only give him 10 millon baht just like the others.
So like Khun RaySthlm said a shophouse is worth many millions of baht depending on the location.

Another example is Siam Square if you look at the roof of those shophouses, it looks really bad, but inside the building. It is totally different and the rent here is as high as 45000 baht a month or more.

We just don't spend much on the exterior of the houses, we don't really care about it, only care about the interior. Besides most of our money usually goes to food and other stuff. We save one thing to spend on another. But I do wish that we spend more on the exterior though. :(

I don't know why people living in a crappy shophouse can drive around with a brand new BMW, or having huge flatscreen TVs all around their crappy looking exterior shophouse.

For example, few of my relatives living in chinatown have crappy looking shophouses (exterior) but are super rich, they can earn up to 100.000 baht a day or more.

Bangkok is no doubt a beautiful metropolis but the people makes it full of life and vibrant, when I was a kid growing jp in Kuala Lumpur, we often escaped to Bangkok, not too far and yet still feel very much at home. Bangkok in my opinion is more daring in architecture than Kuala Lumpur tho but the two cities are indeed spectacular in their own ways..

By giving Bangkok 7/10 I simply declare that the city has alot of interesting spots and great culture, but the skyscrapers lack artistic knowledge and are mostly a deceptive bash on fine architecture. On the other hand the city is vibrant and colorful and I'm very fond of it.

I have to disagree with you. The question to you is how you can Give Berlin a 7 as well. Berlin barely have tall buildings, one tall TV tower and that is about it.

I have to disagree with you. The question to you is how you can Give Berlin a 7 as well. Berlin barely have tall buildings, one tall TV tower and that is about it.

That's because skyline judgement is

1) subjective
2) I believe, the judgement of not how many buildings a city has as well as supertalls, but the image all buildings collectively produce to make a vantage point of the cityscape aesthetically pleasing.

For me a city like Berlin, which has one tall TV tower mixed with lowrises and 5-6 highrises doesn't make a good skyline, and is far away from Bangkoks level in my opinion. Does Olso in Norway beat Shanghai in Skyline? I don't think so. I do not wanna make a scene but it is just silly to give Bangkok and Berlin the same score. :)

Am not defensive, just reasonable :D. Nah, I did not wanna make a fight with you over a silly thing as a skyline comparision, but I don't think it is fair to put Bangkok in the same league as Berlin (skyline) which is a very huge difference. I just saw that you voted 100 out of 10 for Shanghai ;) because it is huge and massive, you even put it before NYC and HK in your top 10, your location is Shanghai right? I think Bangkok and Shanghai are similar, but Bangkok is ofcourse not as good as Shanghai. Anyway, back to topic, I respect your score :).

I rather stand on the 50th floor and look over a sea of skyscraper than standing on the 3rd floor looking at some 5-storey buildings :).

A bit of an older shot I came across upon on google pics, and I'm sure it's somewhere in these 87 thread pages, however just WANT to post it again. This angle just so beautifully depicts the impressiveness of highrise, displaying Bangkok to its fullest skyline glory. I hope to see a similar/same angle soon with Sathorn Square freed from its 'diapers'.
