Malaysia Airlines facilities for premium class passengers at Kuching airport
13 Jan, 2006

Malaysia Airlines (http://www.masworldwide.com/welcome.asp?user_name=) is temporarily ceasing operations of its Golden Lounge at the Kuching International Airport effective Saturday/14 January 2006 for renovations, in conjunction with the ongoing upgrade works of the airport terminal building.

The existing lounge, officially opened on 01 June 1997 and occupying 230 square meters space with a current seating capacity for 50 passengers, will be closed for about 5 months.

Malaysia Airlines (http://hq.malaysiaairlines.com/firstClass/firstClass.html) regrets for the inconvenience caused by this temporary closure and thanks all its customers for their understanding and continuous support.

The renovated lounge scheduled to reopen for business by June 2006 will be about 684 square meters in size, almost three times larger than the current facility, and would be able to accommodate about 90 passengers at any one time.

The new lounge, will be better designed to accommodate and provide for the comfort and relaxation of Malaysia Airlines First and Golden Club Class passengers as well as the airline’s Enrich Platinum and Enrich Gold members.

It will also feature upgraded facilities including a luggage storage area, buffet savories, washrooms, reception and a Muslim prayer room. There will also be a variety of entertainment choices like assorted up-to-date reading materials and music and satellite TV. The Business centre will also be enhanced to cater for the business travellers.

The national airline’s check in counters for First and Business class passengers have also been relocated from the ground floor to the 3rd floor of the airport.

Malaysia Airlines requests all its First and Business Class passengers to take note of this relocation and report early for check-in to avoid inconveniences and to expedite immigration clearance for departures.

The recommended check in time is at least 25 minutes before flight departure for Twin Otter and Fokker 50 flights, 40 minutes for all jet service flights.

Although minor disruptions may be expereinced by customers during the airport upgrade initiative, Malaysia Airlines will consolidate its existing manpower to ensure its ‘golden service’ and ‘Going Beyond Expectations’ customer handling is delivered uninterrupted.

KUCHING, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- The Transport Ministry will work closely with the Sarawak government to get more air linkages upon the completion of upgrading works on the Kuching International Airport (KIA), which has the capacity to handle five million passengers annually.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said Monday the RM620 million-project, including the new wing of the terminal building and runaway extension, was scheduled for completion by March 2008.

"At present the airport (KIA), which is meant to handle only an annual passenger volume of three million, is already very congested, with 3.4 million using it last year," he told reporters after launching the operational transfer of KIA's new wing, which is expected to be completed by April this year, several months ahead of schedule.

Those present included Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who is also State Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister, Regional and Rural Development Minister Datuk Aziz Shamsuddin and businessman Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing, adviser for Global Upline Sdn Bhd, the turnkey contractor.

Chan said the federal government would assist the state's efforts to develop its economy, including the tourism industry, by attracting additional air linkages at the various gateways throughout Sarawak.

At present, he said, SilkAir was operating to Sarawak since last year with four Kuching-Singapore direct flights weekly, via a Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines code-sharing basis.

He said up to 5.3 million passengers annually were expected to use the upgraded KIA by 2012, making it the third largest in the country, in terms of passenger volume.

Based on statistics, this would see an anticipated increase of seven per cent every year from 3.4 million last year, he said.

He said KIA was a major gateway to Sarawak by tourists and investors by air besides being a "first impression" on the rich ethnic and cultural heritage.

The project, with the capacity to accommodate B-747 aircraft operations, is expected to provide closer link and direct connections with international destinations for the tourism and business industries, he said.

Lawas turns into model town
Wednesday January 18, 2006
Story and photos by STEPHEN THEN

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/18/southneast/ms_pg12clean.jpg

Lawas town is well structured and clean.

SARAWAK’S northern-most urban centre – Lawas – which is located next to the state’s border with Sabah and Brunei, has always fascinated first-time visitors with its cleanliness and well-planned environment.

Not many people would expect a town so far away from the state capital – Lawas is 1,200km from Kuching – to be well organised and developed.

In the 1970s and even up to the early 1990s, Lawas, together with nearby Limbang (both Lawas and Limbang are in the same Limbang division), had the notorious reputation for being sin capitals of Sarawak.

Prostitution, sleazy pubs, massage parlours, dirty eateries and rundown motels were a norm in these border towns.

Today, both towns have seen a total transformation following a decade of extensive urban redevelopment and reengineering.

Hundreds of millions of ringgit was invested from 1995 to develop residential estates, agriculture projects, new shops, commercial centres and roads.

There have also been moves to develop hinterland tourism destinations like the Ba’Kelalan and Bario highlands located between six to nine hours by road from Lawas.

The efforts have produced remarkable results. Lawas is now a little model town.

It is clean and free of traffic jams even though it has a population of about 35,000 and a “floating population” of about 10,000 travellers daily who move between Lawas and Brunei as well as Lawas and Sabah.

The rundown and dirty motels have been transformed into nice little inns and tourist-class hotels with decent modern facilities.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/18/southneast/ms_pg12bawang.jpg

Simple and friendly highland folk from the Lun Bawang
minority group in Lawas.

Eateries and restaurants, which cater to both Muslims and non-Muslims, are big and clean and there are plenty of shops.

The road system is good, as is the public transport system.

The riverfront has been given a new look with well-maintained public parks and gardens.

Lawas River, which runs by the town, has been cleaned and it serves as a vital river transportation mode linking Lawas with neighbouring towns and villages and deep interior settlements.

The state recently outlined plans to build new housing schemes and open areas for small and medium-scale industries.

It also plans to build a new airport.

Lawas has also been earmarked as the nerve centre for interior settlements like Long Semadoh and those in the Ulu Trusan region.

The state has drawn up plans to develop the settlements into rural growth centres, and Lawas will serve as the supply area for building materials and as a logistics hub.

Upgraded Kuching Airport To Be Ready By March Next Year

KUCHING, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Global Upline Sdn Bhd, the turnkey contractor for the upgrading of Kuching International Airport (KIA), expects to complete the project by March 2007, one year ahead of schedule.

Its adviser, Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said the company, which had the three year contract until March 2008, was working round-the-clock to complete the expansion and renovation work of the terminal building by March.

"My contract expires in March 2008 but we're trying to complete the work by March 2007.

"We're now rushing to complete the work in the terminal building because I want the people to use the airport conveniently," he told reporters after accompanying Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on his visit to the airport here today.

"For this terminal building we want to complete by March 2006, approximately 18 months - first two months' mobilisation we don't count. I remember last Chinese New Year we started piling, now one year later, we finished all the work like what you've seen today - the bridges, car park, roads, entrance, terminal building. I think it's good," he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Taib, when speaking to reporters, said he was happy to see the airport virtually completed to meet the challenge of increasing number of passengers especially tourists.

He said up to 5.3 million passengers annually were expected to use the upgraded KIA by 2012, making it the second largest in the country, after the KL International Airport.

Congratulating the contractor for being able to progress very well in their work, he said: "By March next year, we (the KIA) will have nine bays with handling of 14 aircraft; four airbus.

"More or less we are quite happy and we thank the federal government for they're able to help us solve the problem of this sudden increase of tourists," he said.

To a question whether Sarawak would have more international direct flights with the completion of the upgraded KIA, Abdul Taib said the state government would focus on the reorganisation of the state's tourism sector.

Kuching International Airport upgrade

http://www.sixthseal.com/images/kuching_international_airport_new.jpg

Kuching International Airport (affectionately dubbed KIA coz flights gets delayed all the time) has just upgraded the upper concourse so all departures have been diverted to the second (third?) floor check in counters. It looks remarkably similar to KLIA...

http://www.sixthseal.com/images/kuching_international_airport_customs.jpg

The Customs checkpoint has also received a hefty upgrade, with more personnel and detector wands and scanners that can actually SEE through the tangle of cables in your notebook carrying case and isolate the prescription medication that you have a legitimate script for. The previous old X-ray machines didn't have the resolution (or penetration) to see through the Cables of Obscurity (Wearer gains +6 in concealing stuff).

http://www.sixthseal.com/images/kuching_international_airport_boarding.jpg

The similarities between Kuching International Airport and KLIA ends at the boarding gates - Kuching International Airport has merchandise counters inside the boarding gates.

Kuching Tower - Another Sarawak Icon In The Making

http://www.cmsb.com.my/news/2005news/cmtree.jpg http://www.cmsb.com.my/news/2005news/cmtower.jpg http://www.cmsb.com.my/news/2005news/kchtower2.jpg

Sunday, 2 October 2005, Kuching – The State of Sarawak, known for its mighty rivers, rainforest, multi-ethnic people and culture, will soon have another icon with the start of construction of the 39-storey, Kuching Tower.

Set to be the tallest building in Sarawak, the Kuching Tower will house an office building and luxury hotel.

“The Kuching Tower would give a new identity to the State capital as well as serve as a symbolic driving force to help realize the city’s full economic potential,” said the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, at the Ground-breaking ceremony performed here today.

“As the tallest building in Sarawak, the Kuching Tower is a landmark for the people of Kuching and Sarawak. It will be a reference point for our tourists and visitors. If you are lost, you would only need to look for the Kuching Tower to know where you are”, added Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The Ground-breaking ceremony of the RM300 million state-of-the-art building was performed by the Chief Minister of Sarawak at a site located on the Kuching Isthmus, just east of Kuching City Centre.

Kuching Isthmus is part of the Kuching City Expansion Plan, which is in line with the Government’s vision to create a modern downtown to co-exist with the old and historical Kuching city founded by the White Rajahs.

The Kuching Tower forms part of an integrated development plan by conglomerate Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) Group for the 240-acre Kuching Isthmus.

Other developments include the new Sarawak Convention & Exhibition Centre, a park and yachting marina. In addition to current road access, river bus services will shuttle the public and visitors to and from Kuching city centre.

According to CMS Group Deputy Chairman, Haji Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, the construction of Kuching Tower is to support the State Government’s initiative to build a fully-integrated convention centre in Sarawak in order to tap on the lucrative Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions, or more popularly known as MICE, industry.

The world-class, fully-integrated, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose and flexible Sarawak Convention & Exhibition Centre will address the current “facility gap” in Sarawak for suitable infrastructure and venues to hold events of various capacity audiences and crowds. The purpose-built convention centre will be large enough to accommodate meetings of up to 1,500 delegates.

When complete, the new convention centre will provide international exposure to showcase Sarawak as a choice destination for the MICE industry.

To be located within walking distance of the Sarawak Convention & Exhibition Centre is the office building and hotel of Kuching Tower which would support the needs of delegates and visitors.

With its distinctive sails design, the Kuching Tower will soar 150 metres high and provide commanding views of Kuching City, Sungai Sarawak, South China Sea and surrounding areas.

The building’s architectural design of sails reflects the importance of river systems and the sea to the people of Sarawak.

The first 12 floors of Kuching Tower will offer 200,000 square feet of first-class business support office space in a state-of-the-art building.

A 315-room luxury hotel will occupy the 15th floor upwards.

Designed to offer 4 star plus, 5 star plus, and Royal Suites, the hotel will provide discerning travelers with rooms of exquisite décor, exceptional dining facilities, and a high degree of service and hospitality.

An 8-storey high atrium or Sky Lounge on the 31st floor will offer breath-taking 360-degree views of the sea and surrounding areas.

Kuching Tower is owned by CMS Hotels Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad. Construction is expected to take three years.

The Chief Minister praised CMS Group for taking a bold move in development of the Kuching Isthmus, a new area which would involve a huge capital outlay.

“The task to modernize should not be entrusted to the Government alone, but the private sector too has to play a role. I praise CMS Group for answering the Government’s call to go outwards in modernizing Kuching city”, said Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib.

Also at the Ground-breaking ceremony of Kuching Tower, wife of the Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Puan Sri (Dr) Hajjah Laila Taib, planted a tree which will be at the centre of future Tower.

The Ground-breaking ceremony was attended by over 1,000 guests who included local politicians, Government officials, guests from the private sector and members of the public from surrounding villages.

may be i m sarawakian, but never heard 'bout kuching isthmus, it is reality, it will become to proud for. but the question is what is the kuching isthmus location, either in petra jaya or realy in kuching? and what the meaning of 'isthmus' itself? the sound is quiet interesting and it is my first time heard it.

How does the Ngiukee hypermarket in kuching looks like? The one in miri is pathetic. Its more like a Walmart without airconditioning. The only good hypermarkets in miri are boulevard and imperial.

Longer runway, apron
dailye xpress news (http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=37550)

http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/upload/051005la.jpg

Kota Kinabalu: The multi-million ringgit Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) expansion project - that will see the reclamation of sea to accommodate a longer runway as well as a bigger passenger terminal - will begin early next year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said preliminary works had actually started but the real scope of the project would start early next year as the Federal Government had already appointed the main contractor.

Speaking after chairing the State Action Council meeting at the State Legislative Assembly building in Likas, Tuesday, he said the State Government, on its part, would be rendering assistance to facilitate the project such as removing the squatter colony near the sea in Putatan.

Musa said the Council was briefed on the scope of the project by the Transport Ministry during the meeting.

He said the project would see the runway extended up to 3,780m (12,400ft) with full parallel taxiway and additional connecting taxiways, compared to the existing runway length of 2,988m (9,800 ft) with only partial taxiway.

The project was also to add more parking aprons to accommodate four B-747s, one AB-330, seven B-737s, three F-50s and three Dorniers.

The passenger terminal building would be extended to 53,513 sq m, with a total area of 79,000 sq m to accommodate about nine million pax (in 2004), compared to the present 25,487 sq m.

A new Low Cost Carrier (LCC) terminal, which is currently operating in Terminal Two, and airside facilities for five Air Buses would also be built.

As for precision approach, navigation aids (Navaids) and lighting would be made available at both Runway 02 and 20 under the projects.

On whether the project would affect the Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) in Tanjung Aru, Musa said it would not since the runway extension would see the reclamation of the sea at the upper part of the KKIA.

The RSTC management had requested assistance of the State Government to shift their race course located at the lower end of the runway following the approval of the KKIA expansion project.

RM690m for 31 Sarawak police projects
Friday March 3, 2006

KUCHING: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will spend RM690mil in the next five years to build police infrastructure and for logistics in the state.

PDRM director of logistics DCP Datuk Saharuddin Samsuddin said the allocation would be used in 31 projects involving the construction of 1,832 residential units for police personnel and officers and nine administrative offices.

“We expect the facilities to be of five-star rating and the best in Malaysia. This includes the building of a new police headquarters equipped with world-class facilities,” he said.

Other projects are a police training centre, General Operations Force camp, Lubuk Antu police district headquarters and the Tabuan Jaya, Gita, Sungai Merah, Sibu Jaya and Sibu central police stations.

This year alone, he said, there would be nine projects costing RM632mil, which would accommodate 1,537 policemen.

These developments did not include PDRM projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan. – Bernama

WCT tipped for KK airport upgrade
By Siow Chen Ming

WCT Engineering Bhd (http://www.wcte.com.my/wcte/index.asp) is tipped to undertake a major portion of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) upgrading works in Sabah worth up to RM1 billion, sources say.

The upgrading involves land reclamation to extend the existing runway (which already juts out into the sea) by another 800m to enable bigger planes like the Boeing 747 and Airbus to land. The terminal building will also be expanded. The value of the reclamation work is estimated at around RM700 million while the terminal expansion and other works will cost about RM300 million, the sources say.

"The upgrading and expansion of the KKIA has been talked about for many years and it was supposed to be implemented under the Eighth Malaysia Plan. The Federal government had previously considered moving the airport to a new location in Kinarut but decided last year on a comprehensive upgrade instead," says a source in Sabah.

Speculation is that WCT, which is now undertaking a water transfer project in Kudat, Sabah, will undertake the land reclamation. Some other jobs at the airport may go to a company under Tan Sri Ting Pek Khing.

Ting was once said to be a front-runner for the airport upgrade project when it was first mooted. He is known as a competitive contractor in East Malaysia and carried out much of the renovations and upgrading of airports in Sarawak, including Kuching Airport.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy was quoted in Parliament last month as saying that the upgrading project was expected to commence later this year.

Growing passenger arrivals have caused congestion at the Kota Kinabalu airport. An upgrade became more urgent after a Boeing 737 skidded on the runway last November.

The KKIA is the country's second busiest airport after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, handling 3.3 million passengers last year. With the expansion, KKIA aims to cater to six million passengers a year and be better equipped to handle the growing tourist trade. Sabah is becoming a popular travel destination for its natural attractions and proximity to Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The KKIA upgrading project will give a big boost to WCT's outstanding order book of RM1.5 billion, which includes the Qatar highway project that it recently secured in a joint venture with Gamuda. WCT's portion is RM384 million.

Based on WCT's construction churn rate of around RM600 million a year, its existing order book of RM1.5 billion will sustain the company for more than 21/2 years. Securing the KKIA job plus other projects could propel WCT into the ranks of the country's major construction concerns. In comparison, IJM's total outstanding order book is more than RM3 billion, while that of Gamuda Bhd's is estimated at RM1.7 billion.

WCT has bid for some parcels of work on the New Doha International Airport in Qatar as well, worth RM800 million. The company made a name for itself constructing the Formula One racing circuits in Sepang and Bahrain.
Other overseas projects WCT has bid for include the upgrading and re-alignment of the 70km Al-Amerat Quriyat Road in Oman worth RM800 million, Boubyan Seaport project in Kuwait (RM800 million), the Durrat Al-Bahrain Bridge (RM350 million) and the Futtaim-BCC shopping and hotel complex in Bahrain (RM1 billion).

WCT reported a net profit of RM22.81 million or 18.63 sen a share for the first quarter ended March 31, on a turnover of RM212.89 million. The group reported a net profit of RM25.13 million for FY2004, which was lower compared to RM75.54 million in FY2003, after providing for an anticipated loss in the Bakun project last year.

Currently, more than 65% of the company's outstanding order book is in Malaysia. The larger local jobs include the Kajang-Seremban Highway worth around RM337 million, Putrajaya (RM178 million), Bakun Dam package 1A and 1B (RM116 million), and water transfer project in Kudat, Sabah (RM109 million).

9MP Report: Return to glory for Sarawak's Fort Alice

The historical town of Sri Aman in Sarawak will soon have a museum of its own with the restoration of the 32-year-old Fort Alice, overlooking the Lupar River.

Fort Alice has been identified as one of the heritage sites to be promoted as a tourism product. It will also serve as a cultural centre.

Restoration work will commence as soon as funds are available, says State Museum director Sanib Said.

He says the peace treaty signed by former Chief Minister Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub and former communist leader Bong Kee Chok, which led to the surrender of the communists in the 1970s, will be among the items displayed.

The picturesque fort, built entirely of belian (ironwood) timber with thick walls to withstand attacks, is in a dilapidated condition.

Fort Alice has a unique design. It is square, with a small tower at each inland corner. It has an open centre courtyard, a drawbridge and a spiked iron perimeter fence.

Fort Alice was built to prevent the Skrang Dayaks going down river to join the Saribas Dayaks in their attacks on the coastal shipping trade.

It was also to prevent them undertaking head-hunting expeditions.

After defeating the last of the major Iban chieftains, Rentap, in 1861, White Rajah Charles Brooke built Fort James in 1864 as a defensive structure controlling the Lupar River.

In 1870 it was renamed after Brooke’s wife Ranee Margaret Alice Lili.

Over the years, the Fort served as a police station, community welfare department, prison department, and other government departments.

Until 1964, a cannon was fired every day at 8pm sharp, signalling that the fort was about to close and the day’s business with the Government was over.

A policeman would call out in Iban:

Oh Ha! Oh Ha! Oh Ha!
Jam diatu pukol lapan,
Tangga udah di-tarit,
Orang ari ulu,
Orang ari ili,
Nadai tahu niki kubu agi.

(Oh Ha! Oh Ha! Oh Ha!
The time is now eight o’clock,
The steps have been drawn up,
People from up-river,
People from down-river,
Are not allowed into the fort.)

The fort was gazetted as a Historical Monument in 1971, and is now under the care of the Sarawak Museum.

9MP Report: A tourism dawn for eerie Skull Hill
By Jaswinder Kaur

April 1:
IT may have an eerie name, but Bukit Tengkorak, or Skull Hill, is set to catapult this sleepy east coast town to fame.

Few, locals included, know that Bukit Tengkorak was a major pottery making site in Southeast Asia between 4340 BC and 50 BC.

But they will soon. For under the 9MP it is to be promoted as a major tourism site. It will be one of more than 60 monuments and historical sites to be upgraded to attract more tourists. Other sites earmarked for special attention are Kota Kuala Muda in Kedah.and Fort Alice in Sarawak.

Heritage trails will be developed based on specific themes, including the Baba Nyonya heritage, the Portuguese and Dutch era in Malacca, war relics in Kota Baru and Bunga Mas in Kedah, and Kelantan.

The site is just 10 minutes away from Semporna town and any reasonably fit visitor can trek to the viewing platform within 30 minutes.

Describing it as a “significant archaeological discovery since independence”, Sabah Museum Department director Datuk Joseph Guntavid says the State and Federal Governments have earmarked Bukit Tengkorak as a focus area under the Plan.

“It will be developed as an open site archaeological museum. It is already being packaged as a tourist site, along with Pulau Sipadan, and this should create a strong spin-off for Semporna,” he says.

Archaeological research done between 1994 and 1995 by Universiti Sains Malaysia in co-operation with the Sabah Museum, uncovered pottery shards in layers of ash, which are probably remnants of open kilns used for firing pottery.

Excavations also found clay for making pottery which may have originated from large deposits of the material at the foothills.

Research also points at cultural contact and trade between 4300 BC and 50 BC involving people living at Bukit Tengkorak with other prehistoric communities along the southeastern coast of Sabah, Sulu Archipelago, Palawan, southern Mindanao, Sulawasi and the chain of islands between Papua New Guinea and Melanesia.

The department has already constructed a wooden staircase and railings on the upper part of the forested area leading to the cave system. An information centre at the top of Bukit Tengkorak, 183 metres above sea level, is also ready. There are plans to expand the staff strength to maintain and monitor Bukit Tengkorak.

Although Semporna is already well-known as the exit point for divers who head for Pulau Sipadan and other dive havens, promoting Bukit Tengkorak to the world will certainly create better economic growth for locals. A majority of Semporna folk depend on fishing and collecting coconuts, while some work in the private and public sectors.

A model of the expanded Sarawak Campus

Swinburne Sarawak will be developing a city campus at its current site. The campus is in proximity to major government and commercial centres as well as being strategically located only 15 minutes from the city centre and Kuching International Airport.

A budget of RM100 million has been allocated for the expansion. This extended campus, expected to be completed by 2007, will be able to house 5,000 students when fully developed. With construction work set to commence during the latter part of 2005, the first buildings to be completed will be two four-storey hostel blocks that will be able to house more than 400 students.

Other buildings to be erected include those for the schools of engineering, business, and IT & multimedia.

Swinburne Australia will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2008 and it is expected that the campus in Kuching will be a major focus for the celebration, playing a vibrant and important part of the future of the University as a whole.

VALUE GROUP TO MANAGE TWO MORE HOTELS
Thursday, July 28, 2005
By: AYU MUSA KAMAL VALUE Hospitality Group, a privately held company, has secured two new contracts to manage two hotels, one in Johor Baru and another in Sibu said its group general manager, Dennis Tan.

"The contract for Tropical Inn Hotel in Johor Baru was signed in May this year, while the contract for Everly Hotel in Sibu was signed last month," said Tan in an interview with Mail Money.

Tan said Tropical Inn and Everly Hotel are both owned by listed companies.

"Tropical Inn is owned by Harn Len Corp Bhd, while Everly is owned by Rimbunan Hijau Group Bhd," said Tan.

He added that being owned by listed entities ensures the strength of both hotels and its ability to expand and attract new customers.

Value Hospitality normally charges between 4 percent of the gross revenue or up to 10 percent of gross operating profit, depending on the size of the hotel.

"Tropical Inn Hotel is a three star hotel with 160 rooms while Everly, which is expected to be opened next year, has 225 rooms," said Tan.

He said Tropical Inn which will be under renovation anytime soon will be known as Prescott Inn in about 12 to 18 months time.

He added that Everly Hotel which is almost ready boasts a 1,000 seating banquet hall, six meeting rooms, a coffeehouse, a gym and a fun pub is expected to be more prominent in design and concept.

Value Hospitality currently manages eight hotels throughout Malaysia. It expects a 15 percent increase in profits with the inclusion of these two new hotels.

RM150m investment in Spring

By Jack Wong

KUCHING: PSB Realty Development Sdn Bhd is investing RM150mil in Sarawak’s largest lifestyle shopping mall in Simpang Tiga, Kuching.

Called the Spring, the project on 4.85ha is expected to be ready in November 2007.

The two-storey shopping mall, which is designed by New Zealand's Warren & Mahoney, will have 150 shops. It has a total lettable area of 350,000 sq ft compared with the combined net retail space of 886,000 sq ft in the 10 existing shopping centres in Kuching.

Some 80 outlets in the Spring have been earmarked for the fashion business, 20 for food & beverages outlets and seven for beauty and wellness centres. There will also be a gourmet supermarket, a food court and a 1,400-seat cineplex.

About 1,500 car parks would be provided. All the outlets are on lease.

Sarawak Second Finance Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh launched the project, which was attended by some 75 retailers from Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday.

PSB Realty is a wholly-owned subsidiary of construction firm, Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd, which has to date undertaken some RM700mil worth of projects.

Perbena Emas built the Hock Lee Centre - a shopping mall cum service apartment - and Wisma STA in Kuching as well as the Tanahmas Hotel in Sibu. It is now constructing a shopping centre in Parkcity, Bintulu.

PSB Realty managing director James Ling said the Spring would be on par with major shopping malls in the peninsula, New Zealand and Australia, and would give a new experience in shopping.

Retail consultants Regroup Associates managing director Allan Soo said Kuching's retail business was an untapped market, which was presently under-supplied by the small shopping centres and strata shops.

“Compared with the 33.45mil sq ft of retail space in the Klang Valley, the total retail space in the 10 shopping centres in Kuching is equivalent to only half the size of MidValley Megamall.

Soo said Kuching’s per capita space was merely 1.5 sq ft per person against 5.8 sq ft in the Klang Valley.

“Kuching is very affluent. The average household income within 15 minutes' drive from the Spring is RM5,500, slightly higher than the average in Klang Valley and Selangor,” he added.

Big Scope For Private Sector In Sarawak's Transport Development

BINTULU, April 14 (Bernama) -- With Sarawak still lacking in transport infrastructure, the scope for private sector involvement in transport-related projects is enormous and the state goverment wants it to lend a helping hand.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, in stating this, said Sarawak has less than 15 years to narrow the development gap and catch up with the Peninsular states, and to achieve the developed state status by 2020.

"An efficient and cost-effective system of transportation and communication is imperative to facilitate the rapid development of the state economy. However, this involves huge sums of investment which the government alone cannot do," he said.

"In this regard, the state will have to consider a more active role of the private sector in the development of some major transport infrastructures and also the possibility of introducing rail transport and other possible new modes of transport such as Light Rail Transport (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) in urban centres," he added.

Jabu, who is also Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister, said the government is open to investments by the private sector, particularly in transport-related projects.

In a paper entitled "Transport Infrastructure: Scope of Participative Development" presented at a regional conference here recently, he said the transport sector plays a crucial role in developments as the state covers a land area of 124,449 square kilometres.

However, with a coastline of about 720 kilometres long and dissected by a total of 32 rivers with navigable length of about 3,500 kilometres, Sarawak poses a tremendous challenge for transport infrastructure development, he added.

As a developing state, transport infrastructure development, particularly land transport, plays vital role in connecting the people of Sarawak and support the economy and its activities, he said.

Over the various development plan periods, about 30 per cent of the development allocation was for transport infrastructure, he noted.

In the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), the federal government has allocated RM15,108 million for development allocation and expenditure in Sarawak.

Touching on issues and challenges of the transport sector in Sarawak, Jabu said the integration of transport network in the state is rather lacking or fragmented.

"Many of the roads are not constructed to the desired standard due to lack of funds. Public transport is also lacking in terms of infrastructure, facilities and services provided," he said.

According to him, existing integration between land, water and air transport is relatively low, thus reducing the overall efficiency of the transport sector in Sarawak.

Jabu said in the 9MP, private initiatives would be further accelerated to enhance efficiency and productivity with priority given to projects that generate multiplier effects, are commercially viable and contribute to social well-being.

"The government will continue to identify new projects viable for privatisation and corporatisation. Coupled with the increasing interest shown by the private sector, it is expected that the number of projects to be privatised will increase significantly," he said.

"Efforts will also be made towards ensuring that major concession companies play a more active role in socio-economic development in meeting some of the needs in society," he added.

Thumbs up for Kuching airport
Tuesday April 18, 2006

KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi seemed impressed when he walked into the newly upgraded RM620mil Kuching International Airport (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=183959&page=14&pp=20).

And when Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy mentioned in his speech that Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing’s Global Upline Sdn Bhd managed to complete the renovation job 15 months ahead of schedule, the Prime Minister flashed a smile at Ting who was seated in the front row.

After congratulating Ting, whom he said was at the project site at 6am on most days, Abdullah got down to business, emphasising the importance of quality and maintenance.

“While I congratulate the contractor and the state government on the speedy completion, I hope quality was not compromised in the process. I hope the new structure will tahan lama (endure),” he said.

Abdullah, who opened the KIA yesterday, hoped that the runway extension due for completion in 2008 would also be speeded up but warned against haste at the expense of quality.

The airport looked beautiful and smelt good at this point, and he wanted it to remain in this state all the time, he said, adding that the maintenance culture in the country was still “not up to the mark.”

“Let this airport be the shining example to the country that we have a first-class facility and an equally strong maintenance culture. Take good care of this beautiful building,” he said.

“I don’t want to see the facilities not functioning or failing often. I don’t want any foul smell in the airport and the toilets. Make sure that passengers, who get excellent service on flights, are treated well after landing at the airport. The taxi service must be good and the passengers must not be fleeced.”

At a press conference later, Abdullah said Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had informed the Cabinet that his officers had started work on the proposed guideline on maintenance of public facilities and buildings.

Abdullah said the airport would play a key role in the development of Sarawak under the Ninth Malaysia Plan and hoped the state government and investors would take advantage of the pluralism and the rich natural resources of the state.

APs given to firms, not individuals: Rafidah

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti), Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz, Tuesday denied that Approval Permits (APs) to import cars were given to certain individuals.

Instead, she said, the APs were given to companies that had taken the initiative to sign franchise deals with foreign car manufacturers.

"Individuals cannot get (AP), it has to be a company with 70 per cent ownership by Bumiputeras. All APs given are based on an agreement tied up with a manufacturer of imported cars. Unverified agreements would be rejected," she said.

Miti has always encouraged Malaysian companies intending to import cars to go for franchise deals and sole distributorship with the main manufacturers ever since the open AP system was abolished in 1987, she said.

"Since March 1997, when we introduced a new policy encouraging franchise, I have been urging them to find franchises and the first person to do this was the Chairman of Perstima, Tun Hanif Omar."

He was also among the first that year to get a franchise for the Fiat vehicles, she said.

Rafidah was answering questions at the Parliament Tuesday on the issue of AP raised by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (BN-Bintulu) and Datuk Mohd Said Yusof (BN-Jasin).

According to a source from Sibu's local daily, See hua Daily [诗华日报], there will be direct return flights from Fuzhou, China [中国福州] to Sibu Sarawak on 27th May 2006 and 6th June 2006. This entire international route is run by Xiamen Airlines [厦门航空] which inccordance to the airline, they will fly regular similar flights for twice a month commencing from August 2006 if the market is successful and the route is profitable enough. Based on the report, Xiamen Airlines will be using Boeing 737 which can fit passengers up to 125 people and the return air ticket is RM1992 with the inclusive of all taxations. Furthermore, the flight Fuzhou to Sibu & Sibu to Fuzhou takes approximately 3 and half hours.

I hope this works since it's one of the development tools to develop Sibu and Sarawak's tourism industry. Also i hope citizens from Sibu and also other sarawak cities can fully utilize this opportunity. SO... Sibu airport is becoming an international airport... Bravo!! Well~ A tiny little one.. LoL..

Putting a SPRING into KUCHING’s retail step
By G. Umakanthan

A new shopping mall, promising to be different, exciting and vibrant and based on the design of shopping malls popular in Australia and New Zealand, is to take pride of place on a 12-acre site in a thriving enclave of Kuching in Sarawak.

But more than just a retail project, it marks the city’s coming of age. With a population of 600,000 today but a retail environment “far behind that of similar-sized cities even in Peninsular Malaysia”, the mall, named The Spring, aims to bring a bounce into the State’s capital.

“We want to provide a lifestyle that can properly cater to retail requirements and at the same time, focuses on meeting consumers’ needs,” said James Ling, director of The Spring developer PSB Realty Development Sdn Bhd and managing director of its parent company, Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd.

“For over 12 months, we studied the catchment within five, 10 and 15 minutes’ drive from The Spring, geo-coded the population and income distribution and measured the total average income to understand the size and spread of our market.

“For the first time here, a developer is focusing on creating a centre that truly fits the Kuching market by giving shoppers the things they desire, and retailers the things they want,” he said.

Situated along a main thoroughfare in a high profile neighbourhood of South Kuching, the two-storey mall will have 350,000sq ft of nett lettable space and 1,500 car-parking bays, with entrances/exits from all four directions.

The RM150 million project, slated for completion by November next year, was designed by a New Zealand-based architectural firm, Warren & Mahoney, which has a strong influence on retail outlet concepts and the built environment in that country.

“When completed, it is poised to be the premier shopping mall in the region and as good, if not better, than the best that Peninsular Malaysia has to offer,” said Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh, Sarawak’s Minister of Finance II and Minister of Tourism and Urban Development.

“With The Spring, sophisticated lifestyle shopping will have arrived for the people of Sarawak.

“It takes enterprising, creative people to do this. With The Spring, a new retail formula has come to Kuching - it is now proactive, innovative and creative instead of being familiar and competitive,” said Wong, who performed the project launch ceremony at a city hotel.

The retail consultants for The Spring, Kuala Lumpur-based Regroup Associates, flew a team of retailers, journalists and other guests to Kuching for the ceremony to mark the launch of what the firm described as “the next big thing in retail”.

Commending Perbena Emas chairman and PSB Realty advisor Tan Sri Temenggong Tai Sing Chii as “the visionary behind The Spring”, Wong said it would give Sarawakians as well as visitors to the State a rewarding shopping experience, with a wide range of retail choice. This would also make the city “more liveable”.

“We’ve had complaints from Arab tourists in particular about Kuching – that unlike KL, it lacks the shopping attractions they want,” added Wong, who spoke off-the-cuff and said The Spring to him would mean “serving people readily in new grandeur”.

Perbena Emas, builder of The Spring, is a construction company incorporated in 1977 and the shopping mall is its maiden venture into property development, on a site it purchased 12 years ago.

Both Perbena Emas and PSB Realty come under Pan-Sarawak Co Sdn Bhd, which started off in the timber trade and then moved on to building and construction materials and air-conditioning supplies.

The group has carried out major building and infrastructure work in Sarawak, including civil structure work for the Malaysia Liquified Natural Gas plant in Bintulu, the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching as well as the Hock Lee Centre and Wisma STA, also in Kuching.

The firm has a good reputation in the State and is known for completing its projects on time.

According to Regroup Associates managing director Allan Soo, with five main shopping centres in Kuching recording 20 million visits a year, the city promises to be a truly dynamic market that will, for the time being, be second only to the Klang Valley.

He said 80 per cent of the major retailers interviewed in the Klang Valley, where retail space works out to 5.8sq ft per person, want to be in Kuching.

Soo added: “The retail sector is basically driven by numbers, by design and by market forces … retailers will certainly look into new concepts put into the market, especially so in a city like Kuching, which is undersupplied with just 1.5sq ft of retail space per person.”

National Aquaculture Centre To Be Built In Sabah
05-05-2006

"Sabah has a very good record of fisheries products and a lot of resources which are untapped," he told reporters after a briefing and dialogue session with members of the Umno agriculture bureau here Friday.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah was also actively conducting research on breeding of fish, said Muhyiddin who is chairman of the bureau.

He said his ministry and the state government would hold further discussions on various aspects of the project, including the funding.

Sabah Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Ismail told reporters that he had identified a suitable site for the proposed centre.

Sabah To Complete Management Plan For Huge Marine Park This Year
05-06-2006
Bernama

KOTA KINABALU, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Sabah state government hopes to have ready this year a plan to manage a proposed 1.1-million hectare marine park that is said to host more coral and fish species than the Great Barrier Reef or the Caribbean Sea.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat said protection of what had been named as the Tun Mustapha Park, located in the northern part of Sabah, would provide for conservation of various marine species and the marine environment including reefs, as well as ensure everlasting fish supply for the people of the state.

"The principal beneficiaries of the park will ultimately be the people of Sabah, especially those living in the Kudat, Pitas and Marudu districts as well as those living in the vicinity of the islands. They can enjoy the benefits of a better and healthier marine environment.

"(They too) will have better and continued access to abundant supplies of fish for food and for their livelihood and to have an opportunity to tap various economic potentials through the anticipated increase in tourism-related activities," he said.

Chong, who is also deputy chief minister, was launching the maiden voyage of the Mameng, a boat based in Kudat under the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion (SSME) programme to facilitate a marine team of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia to conduct marine conservation activities.

The boat will also be used to ferry goods and project staff between the mainland and islands offshore Kudat as well as to enable the team to meet communities living in the proposed park and impress upon them the importance of marine conservation to the environment and people.

The boat has been named after a local fish of that name, otherwise known as the humphead wrasse, an exceptional fish that lives among coral reefs and also one of the most threatened fishes in the world.

Chong said the marine park was threatened with overfishing for years and the use of destructive fishing practices such as bombing and use of cyanide, and the reefs had undergone degradation.

He said that in addition to the reefs, the park would protect important habitats of the rare sea turtles and even the rare dugong.

"A park as big as the proposed Tun Mustapha is necessary to maintain the important ecolological linkages between seagrasses, mangroves, forests, coral reefs, dugongs, turtles and fishes," he added.

The Airport redevelopment is divided into two phases/packages...

Design and Build Contract - Upgrading of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport Project (Package 1 - Terminal Building and Landside Infrastructure & Facilities)

there will be a new control tower (which is a stand alone structure like the one in KLIA and most major airports in the world)

construction of an LCC Terminal is already started and upon completion it can accommodate up to 3 million passengers.

The main terminal building can accommodate 9 million passengers

but of course you wont reach that capacity in short period...I am hoping the airport will not be underutilised...

It seems that the AAB administration,PNB and Khazanah will be investing heavily to develop Northern Malaysia and Souther Johor(SJER), doesn't the federal government have any big plans for Sabah and Sarawak?

It's nice to see Sabah and Sarawak getting some tacky looking hotels and shopping malls, but that's nothing compared to the big projects Southern Johor and Northern Malaysia is getting.

A NEW VISION

Just next to KK Times Square Signature Offices is the KK Times Square Mall, a massive 15-acre business, leisure, and entertainment hub. Planned as a city within a city, this second phase of the KK Times Square development will be Sabah’s first, placing it among the most highly anticipated business and tourist destination in the region.

The ambitious KK TIMES SQUARE is truly visionary in its scales. On the drawing board are a proposed 5-star hotel, shopping malls and hypermarts, cineplexes, and heaps of entertainment amenities for everyone in the family.

Together with KK TIMES SQUARE SIGNATURE OFFICES (Phase One), Phase Two is envisaged to provide a synergy of commercial and leisure activities that will eventually transform the city of Kota Kinabalu.

Freeze on mall projects in KK
By Julia Chan
KOTA KINABALU, Nov 9:

The State Government is worried that the continuous emergence of big shopping centres in the city will result in an oversupply of retail outlets that will eventually end up abandoned.

"That is why we are putting a stop to any future applications for shopping malls in the city," said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

The rapid mushrooming of shopping complexes in the State capital has prompted the Government to take steps to freeze future applications.

The decision was made at a State Cabinet meeting on Oct 19 to stop the development of more shopping complexes and promote more hotels and resorts.

There are seven major shopping complexes in the State capital in various stages of progress involving investments of several billion ringgit and more than a million square feet of retail units.

KK Times Square, 1 Borneo, Star City, Harbour City, KK Mega Mall and City Mall are among the shopping complexes which have sprouted recently, all claiming vast retail space and state-of-the-art facilities.

Musa said the decision was only a temporary measure and discretion would be exercised.

"If the project is logical, timely and strategic, then it is only right we consider," he said, adding that the halt would not affect economic development in the city but rather help regulate it.

Yesterday, Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association said it had received the directive from the Local Government and Housing Industry Ministry to inform all its members of the move.

President Kong Kwok Wah lauded the move but urged the Government to be cautious about the areas it chose to regulate.

"Certain districts which have no such complexes and are tourist destinations will benefit tremendously from such infrastructure," he said

Musa said that in line with this directive, district officers and municipal councils had also been advised against approving shoplots in districts that already have an adequate supply of retail lots.

"Right now, we have a good balance to supply the population's needs. But if we allow the emergence of more shopping outlets, it will be a case of over-saturation of the market," he said.

Parkroyal may expand to east Malaysia

By Yeow Pooi Ling

KUALA LUMPUR: The Parkroyal hotel chain is expected to expand to Thailand and Indonesia, said Parkroyal Hotels & Resorts executive director Wee Wei Ling.

Locally, the group intends to have a presence in east Malaysia. “We're still looking. The property must be compatible with us,” she told a press conference yesterday.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/11/8/business/b_p8wee.jpg
Wee Wei Ling

The group expected to acquire the brand rights for the Pacific region in 2010, following which the Parkroyal brand would be able to enter Australia and New Zealand, said Parkroyal Hotels & Resorts sales and marketing vice-president Christina Chua.

She added that the group was anticipated to spend more than the intended capital expenditure (capex) of RM110mil allocated in the last five years for the upgrading and refurbishment of hotels in Malaysia.

In 2003, it spent RM65mil to refurbish Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur and another RM25mil for Parkroyal Penang. It recently completed additional RM2mil upgrading works at Parkroyal Penang and is expected to spend a further RM20mil to develop a new 78-room wing at Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur.

Chua said details of the extra capex would be announced later.

Wei said the new wing, to be called “Orchid Club”, would occupy the third to fifth floor of the hotel's podium block. The sixth floor would be converted into “Orchid Club Lounge”, comprising a landscaped, 7,000-sq ft indoor and outdoor facility for the exclusive use of guests in the new wing.

Christina Chua

The new wing was expected to be completed by mid-2007, she said, adding that occupancy rate was likely to remain favourable at some 85% next year for its hotels in Singapore and Malaysia.

The St Gregory spa brand, which was integrated in its Penang hotel last month, would also be available at the Kuala Lumpur premises by mid-2007, Wei said.

The Malaysian operations contribute 29% to group revenue for the January to September period.

Lahad Datu palm oil cluster targets RM1b investments

By MUGUNTAN VANAR

KOTA KINABALU: The newly launched Lahad Datu Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) is expected to draw over RM1bil in investments in the next two years.

Optimism is growing that Lahad Datu may become the biggest biodiesel producing port in the world based on initial investor interest in purchasing land in the POIC. Eight of the nine companies that concluded their land purchases were at the signing ceremony held here on Monday.

“This is not only a commendable achievement by the POIC but is of great significance to the state. For the first time in Sabah’s history we will witness a large wave of foreign interest in developing Sabah’s downstream industry,” he added.

The nine companies, which have bought 140ha of the POIC land, include investors from Britain, Australia and South Korea.

Seven of the companies would be investing in biodiesel production, POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Dr Pang Teck Wai said.

He said based on plans at the POIC area and licences granted by the federal government, the companies were expected to inject RM1bil to produce close to one million tonnes of biodiesel by end-2008.

“There is a rush of investor interest in the POIC. This is testimony to the business potential in the sector. We have raw materials for feedstock. We have an excellent harbour and we are located near southern Philippines and Indonesia’s Kalimantan which are sources of future oil,” he said.

Does anyone know where the control tower for KKIA will be built? It is not shown on the option 1 artists' impression.

Being a brand new member, its good to know there is such a place to share information, and to keep abreast of the development of one's hometown.

It surprised me however, to read some of the comments posted here regarding Sabah State Government being poor!

Sabah and Sarawak are the richest states in Malaysia, the poor condition and lack of development especially in Sabah were not due to the State Government being poor. The reasons for that are more political.

Anyway, one shall not dwelve into that for too long!

Anyone has any photographs of the progress of KKIA expansion? I would appreciate it if you could be kind enough to post the photos here.

Move to Kinarut for 1,500 affected by KK airport extension
Saturday December 9, 2006

KOTA KINABALU: Some 1,500 people from Kampung Sri Tanjung in Putatan will be resettled in Kinarut to make way for the Kota Kinabalu International Airport extension project, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said.

Pairin, who is chairman of the Sri Tanjung Squatters Selection Committee, said they were among 3,000 people from 600 families affected by the extension project.

“The process will be completed after one or two more meetings. Those selected will be resettled in Kinarut when 585 units of houses there are ready by February next year.

“The state will decide what to do with the remaining 50% of the affected people at a later date,” he added.

Pairin, who is also Rural Development Minister, said the resettlement scheme in Kinarut would be managed by the state Housing and Urbanisation Planning Council.

A total of 456 houses in Sri Tanjung will be pulled down to make way for the airport extension project. – Bernama

New terminal complex in Kota Kinabalu ready

KOTA KINABALU: The spanking new RM60mil Terminal 2 complex of the international airport here is all set to receive passengers on New Year day.

Malaysia Airports Bhd’s contractors are working round the clock to put the finishing touches to the complex to meet the deadline.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/12/29/nation/n_33azmi.jpg
FINAL TOUCHES: Azmi showing the new terminal’s interior and amenities during a media tour of the airport yesterday.

Its senior general manager for operations Datuk Azmi Murad said the new terminal in Tanjung Aru would be MAB’s New Year gift to Sabah.

“The complex is ready. With just a few final touches, we will be ready for full operations on Jan 1,” he told reporters after a media tour of the new terminal here yesterday.

Azmi said work on the approach roads to the new terminal and aircraft parking bays would only be completed later next month.

“Passengers arriving or departing will have to walk a longer distance to or from the terminal building. But this will only be temporary,” he said.

He urged travellers to arrive early for check-in because there might be teething problems.

Azmi said the old terminal complex would be demolished immediately after Jan 1 and aircraft parking bays in front of the terminal would be paved.

The new 10,307 sq m double storey complex is part of the RM1.3bil Kota Kinabalu International Airport upgrading work that includes renovating Terminal 1 and extending the runway. The work is expected to be completed by 2009.

The terminal, which will cater to AirAsia, Fly Asian Xpress and Transmile flights, will have 26 check-in counters for international and domestic flights, and six aircraft parking bays capable of accommodating B737 and A320.

There will be three baggage carousels with each having a capacity of handling 1,200 bags per hour.

The terminal can cope with 1,200 passengers at peak hour. It will have 750 seats and 500 trolleys.

It will have 13 immigration counters, seven for arrivals and six for departures.

On bus connections between the terminal and Terminal 1 in Kepayan, Azmi said steps were being taken to provide a service by Tanjung Aru Transport Company.

“Taxis are also available,” he added.

TERMINAL 2 CAN TAKE 2.5m TRAVELLERS A YEAR

29th December, 2006
KOTA KINABALU: Terminal Two of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) here is capable of handling up to 2.5 million air passengers a year. And, the new terminal which will start operations on January 1 can meet the demand of travelers for another five years.

The need to upgrade the terminal again will depend on the growth of AirAsia, Fly Asian Express (FAX) and Transmile which are using the terminal. It is estimated that between 1.6 million and 1.8 people would visit Sabah via Terminal Two next year.

“And, we expect that some 800,000 passengers would have used the terminal by the end of this year,” Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) senior general manager for operations, Datuk Azmi Murad told reporters during a briefing here yesterday. To a question, he said MAB had already requested the relevant parties to provide shuttle service for passengers who needed to go to Terminal One to continue their journeys.

“For now, we will provide taxi service to bring passengers to Terminal One,” he said.

The new Terminal Two underlines the efforts by the state government and MAB to further improve air travel experience in Sabah. “This is our commitment to further boost passenger movements at KKIA as well as to enhance services and facilities at this international airport,” he added. Azmi believed that passengers and airport users at KKIA would experience more comfortable visits.

“We will continue to monitor all the service aspects of this airport to ensure it is at its level best,” he said. The new Terminal Two building has 26 check-in counters for international and domestic flights, six aircraft parking bays capable of accommodating B737 and A320 aircrafts.

It can handle 1,200 passengers at any one time during the peak period. The floor size at level one is 10,307 square metres while level two, 3,200 square metres, providing sufficient comfort space for all passengers. Also available are 750 public seating and 500 trolleys for use by passengers.

The terminal also has seven luggage x-ray machines, 13 immigration counters and three 70-metre long baggage carousels, each with the capacity to handle 1,200 bags per hour.

For passengers who want to give their “wallets a workout”, there are two duty free and four retail outlets. And, there are also four outlets selling food and beverages.

Global Upline Sdn Bhd was awarded the contract to upgrade Terminal in 36 months but they managed to complete work in just seven months.

The thanksgiving ceremony Thursday for completing the task within seven months of the 36-month contract was attended by more than 2,000 workers, among others.

http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/upload/291206la.jpg

Global Upline Adviser Tan Sri Ting Pek Khing (inset) had said the terminal will be ready by Jan. 1 to coincide with the start of Visit Malaysia Year and he kept his promise.

In completing the Terminal Two, Global Upline also set a record of completing two airports in one year, the other being the Kuching International Airport. After the dinner, Ting was again seen inspecting the final touches with his son, Michael Ting.

Global Upline was awarded the multi-million ringgit Package Two of the redevelopment of the KKIA project, which apart from the new terminal building, includes the construction of the airside infrastructure and a new air traffic control tower.

The project also includes upgrading of Jalan Mat Salleh leading to the terminal and creating an additional 197 parking lots - making it a total of 390. With the completion, the terminal can handle up to 1,500 passengers.

Smooth takeoff for KK’s Terminal 2
Tuesday January 2, 2007
TheStar

KOTA KINABALU: Operations at the new RM60mil Terminal 2 complex of the international airport here had a smooth start on New Year's Day, which also marked the beginning of Visit Malaysia 2007.

It was a hassle-free check-in and clearance for passengers at the complex which went fully operational at 6am yesterday.

Those arriving here had a pleasant surprise when Malaysia Airports Bhd general manager Abdul Rahman Karim presented them an MAB souvenir each.

“It has been very smooth. There has been no delay as far as operations are concerned,” Abdul Rahman said at the complex, which was completed by contractors Global Upline in a record seven months.

He said operations were also hitch-free at the Immigration counters and all equipment, including baggage conveyor belts, X-rays and other machines, were working smoothly.

“Frequent travellers are pleased with the facilities at the airport,” he said, adding that by Jan 15, all nine aircraft bays would be ready.

Within this fortnight, the contractors are expected to put the finishing touches to the Terminal 2 complex, dedicated for budget airlines, which was built under the RM1.3bil Kota Kinabalu International Airport upgrade.

The upgrading and renovation of the Terminal 1 complex that caters for international traffic, which is being carried out by a different contractor, is expected to be completed by mid-2009.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat announced on Sunday plans for two new flyovers and two four-lane coastal highways for better access to the airport.

Global Upline advisor Tan Sri Ting Pek Kiing, who suggested the idea of the flyovers to overcome traffic congestion, said the models would be presented to the state government in two weeks and work would start soon.

The project is expected to be completed in a year.

The Sabah State Railway has a very long and distinguished history starting from the laying of the first line between Weston and Beaufort in 1896 and eventually being extended to cover Tenom and finally Kota Kinabalu (Jesselton) in 1902.

It was initially constructed to provide an efficient means of transporting tobacco but eventually expanded to cater to the increasing freight and passenger services demands as the State then known as North Borneo , progressed.

Over the years, the expansion of the road system network in the west coast of Sabah , particularly from Kota Kinabalu to Beaufort eventually overhauled the railway as the main means of transportation. As a result, there has been a gradual deterioration in the standard of service and the infrastructure of the rail network due to reduced emphasis and support given by the State Government to this transportation mode.

However, due to its resilience built up over more than a century of existence, this service did not allow itself to become irrelevant and continues to provide a vital service to the communities along its length from Tenom to Kota Kinabalu. In fact, it continues to be the sole form of transportation to the majority of the populace along the Beaufort-Tenom stretch.

This consideration combined with the growing attraction of the railway as a tourist draw has prompted the State government to positively re-evaluate the relevance of this service within its integrated long term planning especially when viewed from the socio-economic angle.

Recognising this need, Suria Capital Holdings Berhad with its joint venture partner, Hikmat Asia Sdn Bhd seized the initiative and submitted a proposal to the federal government through the Ministry of Transport for upgrading and rehabilitating the railway infrastructure.

The Project

The contract was awarded by the Federal Government on a Design and Build basis and generally involves the rehabilitation and upgrading of 135.8 kilometers of existing track starting from Tanjung Aru and ending in Tenom. It is for a period of 30 months with a two year maintenance period.

The scope of work consists of :

• Relocation of utilities and squatters.

• Ground improvement including widening of formation, slope stabilization and river bank protection.

• Repairs of existing and construction of new culverts and bridges.

• Laying of new rails and sleepers.

• Construction of level crossings, service roads and fencing.

• Rehabilitation of yards.

• Refurbishment of existing and construction of new stations and staff accommodation.

PM urges Sabah on growth corridor
Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi urged the State Government to speed up the implementation of the proposed Sabah Development Corridor.

"I have discussed this with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman. It will be spearheaded by Yayasan Sabah, the Sabah Economic Development Corporation and Sawit Kinabalu Sdn Bhd," he said after launching the Kota Kinabalu International Airport's Terminal Two, Wednesday.

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/7162/150207laqf5.jpg

He said the project would include participation from private sector entrepreneurs while the set-up would be decided by the State Government. Abdullah, who arrived here for a two-day visit, said its main objective was to speed up Sabah's development.

He said while the Federal Government would assist where it can, in the end everything depended on the State Government "so I hope the State Government can expedite the implementation of the development corridor".

On whether the development corridor would be similar to the Southern Corridor implemented in Johor, he said, "it may not necessarily be the same, not for Sabah".

"What is important is that there are aspects of development which can be introduced through Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs)," he said.

The PFI formula would encourage domestic investment as well as joint ventures with foreign companies. "At the time same, tourism certainly has a very strong potential for Sabah especially with the signing of air agreements for BIMP EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East Asean Growth Area).

"This means flights to Sabah will be much more than before...I'm also happy that AirAsia X (a new no frills Malaysian airline) will be flying to other international destinations," he said.

Abdullah said the Terminal Two, the low-cost flight terminal for KKIA, would not only cater for domestic but also international ones.

"It will also provide facilities for other low-cost-carriers (LCCs)," he said. On the function of Malaysian Airports Bhd regarding low-cost terminals, he said at the moment the company would be responsible for the management of all low-cost terminals in the country.

Earlier, in his speech, Abdullah said low-cost flights could help boost national integration.

"We have been looking for ways to speed up integration between the peoples of Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula and with the availability of low-cost flights, the process will be made much easier. This will definitely help strengthen national integration," he said.

As such, Abdullah urged LCC operators to ensure their services "were at the best level possible always" for the comfort of passengers.

KKIA will further improve Sabah's fortunes: CM
Kota Kinabalu: CHIEF Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the tourism industry in Sabah is very much dependent on the continuous potential of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to attract more tourists particularly from foreign countries.

In this respect, he said the expansion of the KKIA is the main catalyst to expedite the development of the industry in Sabah.

Speaking at the launching of Terminal 2 at Tanjung Aru by the PM, he said:

"(Inevitably) the sector that would receive direct positive impact from the implementation of the project is tourism. And certainly, the State Government felt very lucky with the implementation of the mega project because apart from being the main entry point to Sabah, the KKIA is also able to bring about changes to Sabah."

The KKIA, he said was the second busiest airport in Malaysia after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for the past several years.

Last year, Sabah recorded two million tourist arrivals compared to 1.82 million in 2005.

Based on the optimistic figure, Musa said the State Government was confident of achieving 2.7 million arrivals this year as well as playing a significant role to ensure the Visit Malaysia 2007 programmes is a success.

As of now, he said the airport terminals in Kota Kinabalu are hosts to 307 flights on a weekly basis of which 86 are of international and 221 domestic.

Musa, who is also State Finance Minister, said there would be also 20 chartered flights from Sabah starting this month.

Because of the tourism potential, the Government had formulated policies and important infrastructure to ensure that tourism here achieves its full potential.

"Therefore, I believe that the growth of the industry would be further enhanced especially now that Terminal 2 is (fully) operating coupled with the completion of the KKIA Terminal One."

He said when the expansion and upgrading of the airport main terminal is completed, travelling would be smoother in addition to more domestic and international tourists arrivals to Sabah.

Towards this end, he reminded the importance of the delivery system that has been repeatedly stressed by the PM.

"We stressed on this matter seriously because the provision of facilities or first class infrastructure like what is happening today, should be streamlined with the provision of world class or first class services," he said.

Hence, he said everyone should view the mega project as a catalyst to produce firmer effort as well as strengthen the national economy.

Musa said the national trade value, which surpassed the RM1 trillion mark last year as well as the performance of the Bursa Saham Malaysia with composite index recording increase up to 1,200 points showed the national economy is getting stronger.

Further on the Terminal 2, he said the State and Federal Governments strongly supports and encourages airline operators, particularly those that operate at the terminal, to develop new flight routes not only domestic but also regionally.

He said low fare flights to Brunei Darussalam would be implemented soon while flights to other destinations would follow.

On other developments, he said the air carriers are not only able to strengthen the process of national integration among Malaysians but also provide huge benefit towards unity and relations at regional and international level.

Musa also said that the Malaysian Government has appointed Global Upline Sdn Bhd as the contractor to design-build the Second Package of the Re-Development of the KKIA while the consultant, KLIA Consultancy Services Sdn Bhd.

He commended Global Upline for being able to complete the Terminal 2 project within record time of seven months, which is 29 months earlier than the projected completion timeframe.

PETRONAS’ SOGT PROJECT CATALYST TO SABAH DEVELOPMENT – ABDULLAH

http://www.newsabahtimes.com.my/mediafiles/picture/1470/p2a.jpg?1171597767
Abdullah at the SOGT’s ground-breaking in Kimanis yesterday

16th February, 2007
PAPAR: The Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) project developed by Petronas in Kimanis, near here, will be the pulse of the state development, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said yesterday.

The Prime Minister said the project on a 62.5ha site would not only spur petroleum-based industries in Sabah but also provide job opportunities to locals and contract work.

Petronas would also create opportunities for new entrepreneurs in the oil and gas industry, he said when speaking at SOGT’s ground-breaking in Kimanis, about 20km from here. Abdullah said this project would have direct impact on the state’s development.

He also welcomed Petronas’ readiness to cooperate with several local training institutes including Mara Skills Training Institute, Kota Kinabalu Industrial Training Institute and Mara Activity Centre to train locals in the required fields.

Abdullah said he hoped when the youths complete their skills training, some of them would be hired to work with Petronas, especially at SOGT.

“If they do not have the required skills and qualifications, surely they cannot work with Petronas and workers for SOGT have to be imported or brought in from other states.

“This makes all of us unhappy and frustrated as the nation’s wealth and jobs are enjoyed by others,” he said.

The Prime Minister hoped Petronas would conduct the training programmes as early as possible while SOGT was still under construction.

“If they start early, the training centres would have trained the workforce needed when SOGT begins operations,” he said. Abdullah wants all government agencies to co-operate to ensure success of the training programmes, adding that SOGT slated for completion in 2010 would bring more prosperity to Sabah.

SABAH DEVT CORRIDOR SET TO ENTER INITIAL PHASE, SAYS CM

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said the implementation of the Sabah Development Corridor will enter its initial phase when discussions begin not long from now.

He said the state government had directed State Secretary, Datuk KY Mustafa to discuss the matter with the Economic Planning Unit in Kuala Lumpur.

“We have told him to meet with the EPU in Kuala Lumpur and the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Effendi Norwawi,” said Musa at a press conference after attending the PBS Chinese New Year open house held at the Airport View Hotel here on Monday.

Musa, also the Minister of Finance, said Effendi had stated his willingness to speak with KY and other state government officials on the subject.

The Chief Minister said the discussion would centre on finding an appropriate model for the Sabah Development Corridor.

“The corridor is to enable us to develop Sabah much the same as Sarawak and the other states in the peninsula,” he explained.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced the Sabah Development Corridor to speed up development in the state.

“The main focus is to speed up the development of Sabah, not necessarily those that are already budgeted for, but also the types of development which can be introduced through PFI (private finance initiatives) formula,” he said.

Abdullah said the PFI can help encourage domestic investments as well as promote joint venture between local and foreign companies in the development of infrastructure facilities and projects in Sabah.

The development corridor would be spearheaded by three government-linked companies (GLCs), Sabah Foundation, State Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) and Sawit Kinabalu.

Datuk Edward Khoo who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister.

TNB Shortlists Three Companies For Sabah Power Plant

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd has shortlisted three companies out of 13 companies that made the bid to build and operate its coal-fired power plant in east coast Sabah.

Its chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, said that so far, TNB had yet to receive any answer from the government on the matter.

"The names of the companies have already been submitted to the government. It is up to the government to make the decision," he told reporters after TNB's Chinese New Year open house, here Monday.

Che Khalib said as usual, any privatisation project should receive approval from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).

On whether the decision would be announced by the first quarter of this year, he said: "We should be on track."

The coal-fired power plant which will have a 300-megawatt capacity, was tendered out on a built, operate and transfer basis.

To be built near the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Lahad Datu in two phases, the plant is likely to be fully operational by 2010.

Proceeding with Sapangar hub plan
Kota Kinabalu: The State Government will continue efforts to turn Sapangar Bay Container Port, currently still under construction, into the hub for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines-East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, in announcing this, said the State Government and the people of Sabah are enthusiastically waiting for the completion of this new container port costing RM400million, which is expected to begin operations next month.

Musa said this in a speech delivered by Tan at the signing of the RM150million Islamic Securities comprising of RM80million Bai-Bithaman Ajil Islamic Debt Securities & up to RM70million Murabahah Underwritten Notes Issuance Facility/Islamic Medium Term Notes Facility For Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) at the Magellan Sutera Hotel here Thursday.

The finance facilities are jointly arranged by Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad (BMMB) and MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Berhad (MAIB), together with Sabah Development Bank Berhad (SDB) acting as the co-arranger.

Seen as the key to the development of manufacturing and industrialisation in Sabah, this 500-metre long and 12-metre deep sea port (in Sapangar Bay) will be able to handle two container vessels with capacity of up to 3,000 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEU) at any one time.

Bearing any unforeseen circumstances, it will be operational by April 1.

Fully equipped with modern cargo handling equipment, the Sapangar Bay Container Port will have the capacity to handle 500,000 containers a year.

"Once operational, the Sapangar Bay Container will be able to attract more bigger container vessels not only for Sabah and East Malaysia but also transhipment containers to and from North Asia as well as Indo-China and the Indian Sub-Continent," said Musa.

On the prevailing issues of the dual carriage access road to the Sapangar Bay Container Port and remedial works at the landslide-affected Nexus Karambunai Resort junction, he said the State Government has directed Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah to look into the matter with urgency.

"Our effort to build and operate an efficient container port of international standard which can act as a catalyst to boost our manufacturing and industrialisation programme as enshrined in our State's Halatuju and as a gateway for the export of our manufactured products to the international markets," he said.

Also present are SPSB Chairman Tan Sri Ibrahim Menudin, Sabah Ports Authority (SPA) Chairman Datuk Dr Zaki Haji Gusmiah, SPSB Managing Director Datuk Haji Abu Bakar Haji Abas, MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Berhad CEO Datuk Megat Hishamd Megat Mahmud, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad CEO Datuk Abdul Manap Abdul Wahab, Sabah Development Bank Berhad Chairman Peter Siau Wui Kee, AmTrustee Berhad CEO Raja Amin Shah Raja Abdul Aziz, Warisan Harta Sabah CEO Abdul Rahman Ghani, and Sabah Foundation Director Tan Sri Datu Khalil Datu Haji Jamalul, among others.

SPSB is a fully-owned subsidiary of Suria Capital Holdings Berhad which officially took over the management of all port operations from Sabah Ports Authority on Sept 1 2004. These include the ports in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Kudat as well as the Sapangar Bay Oil Terminal and Sapangar Bay Container Port.

Suria Capital Holdings' other subsidiary companies in Sabah are Suria Bumiria Sdn Bhd, SCHB Engineering Services Sdn Bhd, S.P Satria Sdn Bhd, Tricubes Suria Sdn Bhd and S.P Logistics Sdn Bhd, which involves in a range of activities from supplying to cargo-handling equipment, bulking and bunkering services as well as IT Solutions provider for companies within the group. NOTING the privatisation of Sabah Ports Authority's operations by Suria Capital Holding showing positive signs, Musa said it has hastened the overall development of the State's port infrastructure and resulted in better port efficiency and financial performance.

"Today, Sabah ports has proven herself worthy of an AA3 (for long-term) and P1 (for short-term) ratings by Rating Agency of Malaysia (RAM) to enable it to successfully raise a bond fund of RM150million for their port development projects," he said.

Thursday's significant signing ceremony is a positive example of the pooling of resources, which in this case will assist Sabah ports' move forward and facilitate its port operations and further help expedite economic activities in the State.

"The good ratings received by Sabah ports itself are indications of the favourable market perception of its business prospects and thus provide impetus for the future development of our port infrastructure in the State," said Musa.

Suria Capital Holdings is committed to spend about RM600m out of the RM1.36billion-capital expenditure within the first 5 years of the 30-year concession period for the port infrastructure development in Sabah.

Musa said SPSB has also been playing its role in providing new facilities for supporting the State's palm oil industry.

Recently it completed a new palm oil jetty in Sandakan that provides more facilities for the export of palm oil from the State, while in the process of building another new palm oil jetty in Kunak to specially cater to the needs of the two new refineries namely Sawit Kinabalu and TSH-Wilmar Refineries in the area.

Through SPSB, the Suria Group is also earmarking the construction of palm oil jetties in both Sandakan and Lahad Datu Palm Oil Industrial Clusters (POICs) which will be managed by the subsidiary.

Another sign of their commitment is the re-development of the "Jesselton Point" where the people of KK are seeing the changing landscape at the old Kota Kinabalu Port's ferry terminal.

"In the years to come we can expect to see the whole waterfront in the area to be developed into a modern commercial, residential and recreational area for the city," said Musa, who was also happy to note that other ports in the region wanting to adopt the same cargo handling system used at the Kota Kinabalu Port.

He said the SPSB's nine per cent overall growth last year augurs well and is in tandem with the State's anticipated economic growth of 5.5% for the same year.

"These are all signs that Sabah Ports is heading in the right direction. Nonetheless, I hope the management team of Suria Capital Holdings and SPSB, under the capable leadership of Datuk Haji Abu Bakar, will not rest on their laurel but to continuously strive to bring the company to much greater heights," urged Musa.

"The Federal and State Governments spends million to improve infrastructure throughout the country. Likewise, Suria Capital has injected a significant amount financially for port infrastructure development in Sabah," he said.

RM330m project to ease West Coast water woes
Tuaran: The completion of the RM330 million project to construct a water treatment plant, reservoirs and main pipe in Telibong at the end of this year is expected to effectively address the water supply shortage in West Coast areas.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said works that are being carried out by the main contractor, Imej Warisan Sdn Bhd, are going smoothly even though they are facing several setbacks.

He felt with government assistance, the problems would be soon resolved.

Speaking to reporters after a joint briefing by the Tuaran Water Department and Imej Warisan, represented by project manager, Seng Pay, he expressed confidence over the ability of the contractor to deliver the project in November this year or early next year.

"During our visit today we saw works implemented by the contractor progressing smoothly," he said at Kg Lakang, here, Monday.

According to Seng, physical work progress as of February is already 77.7 per cent completed compared to the scheduled 79.5 per cent.

Hajiji, who is also Sulaman Assemblyman, said erratic water supply along Jalan Tuaran up to Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Sepangar Bay would also be addressed when the project is completed.

Initially, the project was scheduled to be completed in March 16, 2006, but was extended to Nov 22, this year, due to several problems involving the residents within the project area.

As to the eight families who have yet to relocate to the prepared site for them, he said priority would be given to them to occupy eight People's Housing Project (PPR) houses in Rugading, here.

The affected families would only have to pay between RM130 and RM140 rental for a three-room house in the PPR housing.

In addition, Hajiji said the Tuaran Land and Survey Department and Tuaran District Officer would work together to settle the problem of landowners who refused to allow the contractor from carrying out pipe laying work near the water intake.

"As citizens of Malaysia, I think they also want to see the rakyat receive uninterrupted water supply.

"There are some problems, but I believe they will be able to solve the dilemma," he said.

Also present were Tuaran MP Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau, Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Louis Rampas and Tuaran District Office Awang Shamsi Jamih.

^^ Nice pictures!!, I hope they finish constructing KK's new terminal 1 ahead of schedule like recently of terminal 2. Terminal 1 and KK airport is the largest airport in Borneo, 2nd Largest in Malaysia, with the completion of the new terminal it will have a capacity of 10Million passengers! Compare this with the next largest airport on Borneo, Brunei International airport which only has a capacity of 2 Million passengers.

Err, sorry correcting myself, Brunei Airport is not the second largest/busiest in Borneo.

In 2005, Brunei International handled 1.3 million passengers.

Kuching airport handled 3,354,973 in the same year.

For some reason I always thought Brunei Airport was one of the larger airports in Borneo, perhaps because Royal Brunei Airlines flies internationally to many destinations. In reality it's actually very small airport.

TM to provide telecom infrastructure for POIC
Kota Kinabalu: Telekom Malaysia Berhad ª sealed a RM2. 7 million deal with POIC Sdn Bhd to install and commission telecommunication network and infrastructure at the palm oil industrial cluster project in Lahad Datu.

The deal has been described as significant by POIC Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Dr Pang Teck Wai, as it was in line with their aspiration to provide high quality and reliable services to its investors, apart from attracting more to come.

"POIC Lahad Datu has brought in RM1 billion worth of investments (since it started marketing in September last year) and they (investors) need the best of infrastructure, including telecommunication," he told reporters after the signing ceremony at the Le Meridien Hotel, here, Monday.

Dr Pang commended TM's management involved in the deal who managed to conclude everything from the scope of work, financial aspects and date of delivery in the first meeting.

"And I believe there was no other meeting between the first meeting and the ceremony today," he said, adding that reliable telecommunication was vital towards a successful realisation of the POIC development project.

TM Retail Vice President (Sales), Shahruddin Sallehuddin, who signed the contract for TM, said POIC is also assured of enhanced and reliable after-sales services as well as easy monitoring, as TM would handle the overall maintenance.

"It also comes with service guarantee and committed bandwidth. The fully fibre optic diversity network broadband capability will be able to cater for the most advanced and sophisticated telecommunications services," he said.

He added that these services would not just be limited to voice, data and Internet services but also other services under the group such as the cellular services of 019 and 013.

The date of delivery has been set for by July 31 this year, which was the date promised by the POIC to the investors for all the infrastructures to be ready.

LD seen as 'Rotterdam of the East'
Kota Kinabalu: The Netherlands and Sabah are "linking up" for a win-win situation, particularly in developing Lahad Datu Port as "Gateway to the East".

Netherlands Ambassador to Malaysia, Lody Embrechts, said this would entail sharing of know-how and expertise.

He was speaking in a Press conference after a briefing by Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) Sabah Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer, Dr Pang Teck Wai, here, Thursday. The briefing was also attended by Industrial Development Minister Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin.

Embrechts said his visit followed a discussion by the two parties less than a year ago on the ambition of Sabah in terms of developing the POIC logistics and facilities via upgrading the Lahad Datu Port and eventually becoming the "Rotterdam of the East". The purpose of the visit is two-fold.

Firstly, it is to promote the expertise of the Netherlands in the following sectors: Port development, agriculture (forestry, palm oil), oil and gas, infrastructure, logistics, and education and human resource training.

Secondly, it is an official visit of the Port of Rotterdam to underline the synergy in port development in respect to the activities of the Sabah Port Authorities and, in particular, POIC Sabah.

It is also to exchange views and experiences on the development in the palm oil sector and to meet present and potential customers. Apart from that, it is to introduce the Port of Rotterdam as the only certified halal hub in Europe.

The discussion also touched on timber export and timber-related issues with the concerned authorities and industries, and to discuss sustainable development and the use of biomass for energy production.

Embrechts' team comprised Port of Rotterdam Authority Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Ger Van Tongeren, Netherlands Embassy Economic Section Head, Mrs Jacoba Bolderheij, Port of Rotterdam Authority Area Manager (Southeast Asia), Capt Kees Westrate, and Business Development Adviser, K C Lee.

Meanwhile, Ewon is optimistic that the Lahad Datu Port for its soon-to-materialise 20-metre deep jetty considered the deepest in the world could become a world leading port.

He cited that the Port of Rotterdam was itself a mere fishing village before its remarkable transformation.

By then, it would not just serve the BIMP-EAGA region, which has some 60 million potential customers, but be a gateway to other parts of the world as well, he said.

Ewon would be heading a delegation in May this year for a familiarisation trip to the Netherlands and for further dialogues and discussions as well as other possibilities.

Van Tongeren, on the other hand, noted there has been a lot of development on POIC and other industries.

"When we look at the total cargo coming from Sabah in the direction of Europe, the relationship between Sabah and the Port of Rotterdam is a good step."

In this context, the Port of Rotterdam mainly concentrates on the bio-diesel and palm oil cargo. "We have two refineries for palm oil," he said.

He said they would also share their knowledge in infrastructure. Future discussions would include bringing Sabah into the network in the provision of logistics.

According to Capt Weststrate, Rotterdam is the only European port that has been halal-certified. They have a halal logistic handbook, which takes care of the total certification from the factories to port till the final consumer.

Committee To Spearhead The Development Of Malaysia's Biggest Fisheries Port

KUCHING, March 23 (Bernama) -- A special committee will be established to exploit the full potential of the country's biggest fisheries port, the RM322 million Tanjung Manis Integrated Deep Sea Fishing Port, in Mukah.

Fisheries Department Deputy Director-General (Development) Ahmad Sabki Mahmood said the committee, to be named the Tanjung Manis Industrial Development Council, would comprise representatives from the private and public sectors and would be tasked with identifying programmes or projects that could boost the port's usage.

"We want to make a big change in the deep-sea fishing industry that would benefit the government and the private sector," he told reporters after performing the earth-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Sarawak Fisheries Department office and multi-purpose hall in Santubong, 30km from here, today.

He said the government was actively gathering feedback from those directly involved in the deep-sea fishing industry to map out a more comprehensive plan.

The government's primary concern now was to develop the marketing and processing activities as well as other value-added activities that could boost the image of the port, he added.

Touted as the most modern in Asia, the port is the second biggest in the region, after the one in Thailand, and the biggest in the country, a position previously occupied by the Chendering Fisheries Port in Terengganu.

The fishing port, modelled after its counterpart in Skagen, Denmark, sits on 35.1ha of land and has a 600m wharf that runs parallel to Sungai Rajang, the longest river in Malaysia.

The port will be handed over to the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) effective April 1.

Until the port is fully ready in December, LKIM will administer and regulate the overall operations here, including the import and export of fishes as well as collection, storage and processing of data regarding fish landings and vehicles utilised.

Well, what to do?? Coz KK near china and Japan all tht, so, they make KK for their 1st gateway to Malaysia...and oso, KKIA 2nd busiest airport in Malaysia, no doubt they hav to make it 2nd largest airport in Malaysia...

Like KIA no travellators... all my friends complain have to walk a distance especially gate 9. haha... But KKIA still have a lot of land for expansion not bad... KIA actually we have limited land space because the vicinity around the airport has been developed and RMAF uses the other part of the land. Some more the land is pretty hilly unlike KKIA the land is flat.

Hmm... if I wanna go KK wait until somewhere around 2009 then go liao coz can use new Terminal!!!

KUCHING, May 9 (Bernama) -- In a move to turn Santubong in the outskirts of this city into a premier tourist attraction, a RM50 million cable car project will be undertaken to ferry visitors in comfort on a scenic ride amid lush greenery up the legendary Mount Santubong there.

State Urban Development and Tourism Minister, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said the project, which would start in August and scheduled to be completed in two years, would be another significant new attraction for the Damai and Santubong areas and Sarawak as a whole.

"The primary appeal is its ability to offer tourists a spectacular view of the surrounding area including the forested slopes of the mountain. It is this rainforest setting that is the main selling point of the cable car system.

"I hope the establishment of the cable car system will become another milestone in the development of the area not only as a new tourism product for Sarawak but also to provide job opportunities for the people living in Santubong, Buntal and Bako," he told reporters, here Wednesday.

Later, Wong represented the state government in signing the concession agreement for the project with Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd (SCC), which was represented by its Executive Chairman, Abang Nawawi Abang Drahman.

Wong said the state government had granted the Sarawak-based Bumiputera company exclusive rights to design, build, complete, commission, operate and manage the cable car system for a period of 60 years.

Meanwhile, Abang Nawawi said the detachable mono-cable system would have 8-seater gondolas that could climb to a height of 769 metres and that its inclined length would be 2,535 metres.

He said the gondolas could travel up to a maximum speed of five metres per second from the base station, located at the foothill of the 810-metre mountain near the Sarawak Cultural Village.

Fences being built in several areas along Sarawak-Kalimantan border
Saturday June 2, 2007
By Jack Wong

KUCHING: The federal authorities are putting up fences in several areas along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border where the illegal immigrants were reported to have sneaked into the country illegally.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said the task, which will be undertaken between them and the federal National Security division, would be carried out in the next 10 years.

He said Sarawak would also see another nine immigration posts along its border with Indonesia as part of the measures to upgrade the border security.

“The posts are being built in various stages now,” he said.

Under the 8th Malaysia Plan, eight of such posts had been built.

Dr Chan said construction work of the proposed Customs, Immi-gration and Quarantine complexes in Lubok Antu and Biawak were expected to start in the next few months.

He said the Immigration Depart-ment, police and armed forces were on the lookout for illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries and had launched various operations, including spot checks, to curb such illegal crossings.

There were 204 of such operations held last year and 614 people had been detained for such a crime.

In the first quarter of this year, 181 illegal immigrants had been booked in 94 operations so far.
