ZILINA is a centre of northwest Slovakia and one of the largest towns of the Slovak Republic. It is a seat of administration of the Žilina Region, one of the 8 regions of the Slovak Republic, with the area of 6,788 sq. km, and with the population of 692 582 (1 January, 2000).

Population of Zilina as to the 1 January 2000 reached 86,818 inhabitants.

the old city is very well preserve, Slovack people is Ortodox peter?

Slovaks are mainly Catholic, there are some protestants as well.

BTW this is a really pretty place. I especially like the city square.

What is the story behind the ruined castle in the last pic?

to be concrete - here are numbers from 2001 census:
Population by religion: believers (84.1%) of which:
Roman Catholic (68.9%), Evangelical (6.9%), Greek Catholic (4.1%), Reform Christian (2%), undetermined (2.2%), atheist (13.7%)

to be short :)
Lietava castle is one of the biggest castles in Slovakia. The original parts of this castle were destroyed by Tatars and in the 13th century it was rebuilt and became a property of a rich family which owned 25 nearby villages. The style of the castle has been changed number of times. The last changes in its appearance were made by two families - Zapolskovci and Turzovci. The castle was desolated in the 17th century.
