I just got digital camera so I must say that my photos aren`t very good. But at least I can show some "typical places".

When I see these photos I'm thinking "Gosh how lucky we are here at SSC to get first hand photos of the transition the Baltics are going through". Really, old shacks next to newly restaurated houses and brand new residentials. Good work!

That's a bunch of photos from unseen places (which is not a frequent case in this forum :D). I hope to see some more photos of this kind.

Btw, congrats for getting a camera :okay:

but cool pics

If talking about neighbourhoods we live in and about unseen places:

My neighbourood in Amsterdam (northern part of A'dam):

This is quite cheap neighbourhood in Amsterdam, built in 1960's. The highrise, of course in recent years.

Sorry, no tripod... :)

This one looks quite like a soviet style comieblocks in Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius, don't you agree?

õujea!

this is a VERY GOOD neighborhood you live in! it has a great future ahead of it. those wooden buildings built in 1910-1930 or so are very nice and they should be renovated. and i'm sure soon they will be. the area around A.LeCoq Arena is developing fast. There are already some new (tall) buildings on Asula street and a new district with nice apartments is soon to be under construction. and the Osten Tor highrise is also nearby.

in ~10 years this whole neighborhood is THE PLACE to live in! :)

yep, i repeat, those wooden 'shacks' rock! :D

1. Yeah, it`s very good that I got camera. It`s Olympus C-370. Very cheap, but good camera (3,2 MP etc).
2. Fortunately this transition is quite fast and my home building will be reconstructed in spring.
3. Development near A le Coq is fast indeed. Osten Tor will be Great adition. It`s certainly damn massive building.
4. I can`t say that this district is boring. Maybe it`s boring, but I prefer wooden houses to commieblocks.
5.Before WW2 it was nice quiet district without commieblocks. Now there are some really ugly contrasts between commieblocks and wooden houses.
6.This Amsterdam commieblock district looks average, altough last pic is horrible.

:) Congrats with camera! I think that nobody else presents that many picture threads as we do here...
I was a bit surprised about this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/SanderZro/P1010017.jpg
I never knew how looks wooden building in Functionalism style. This one has concrete middle part and this allows to find out the style...
I would say - this district is not extremely interesting (have you seen many cities, where EVERYTHING looks interesting?) but it is pleasant, much much better than commieblock districts.

Thanks, @sander.

Sander, first of all congrats with having a new digital cam, I'm sure you'll find it fun (an addictive ;)) to photograph stuff.

As for the neighborhood it looks nice, no commieblocks, very cosy. :okay:

This building looks quite similar to Hotel Viru, my guess is that it's designed by the same architect. Never seen a picture of it before :)

Thanks for photos sander, it's a nice place you live in - small, nice houses and quite close to the center. Definitely much better than some commie district.

Dunno what to call a commieblock

Near my house there are such grey brick buildings...

Wow! Aitäh, sander. I ought to see your district in real life the next time I'm in Tallinn. As others have said, it's very cozy. Love those old buildings.

Very untallinish look here

What wonderful news, sander!

You've got yourself a digital camera, found a reliable photohost, and are going around taking pictures for us. Thank you!

Yes, your neighborhood does look very pleasant, although a bit of paint here & there wouldn't hurt. What struck me the most in this series are the tall vertical panels in the center of so many of the buildings. This must be local architectural feature ... I never saw it before, at least not so pronounced and so frequenty. I like that! :okay:

Also, may I take the occasion to compliment you on your English. You've learned a lot since I first "met" you here! :applause:

those wooden buildings with vertical panels in the center came 'in style' in the early 1930's. i guess they can be called functionalistic as Gatis said. i don't know if other countries have such buildings but Tallinn is filled with them. sadly most of them are in a bad shape.

Gatis - does Riga have such buildings???

That's funny, it's not what functionalism looks like here. Maybe there are different branches or something.

"I never knew how looks wooden building in Functionalism style"
Gatis' exact words.

The central part of this building can hardly get any more functionalistic than this

Thanks for the information, Jarmo! :) Interesting. I think those panels give the buildings an aura of dignity, elegance and presence that they might otherwise lack, there's something very formal about them. I must admit I'm not necessarily convinced about the visual virtues of this mix of wood and concrete, though ...

On the other hand, I find it wonderful that this central panel accent is still in use in the more recent buildings Sander shows. :okay: Stylistic elements like this tie a city together through the successive generations of buildings. I think that's great!

You're missing my point: Around here funtionalism does not mean having that central part. It's funny how it's different in different places.

No, you're misunderstanding us. :) Nobody here claimed that in Estonia or Latvia functionalism means the same as having a concrete column in center of a wooden building. We are talking about that central part only, not rest of the building. The original quote from Gatis was "wooden building in functionalism style", and that central part is functionalistic as Jarmo said. It came to style at time when functionalism was doing strong and the looks of it is as funkis as it gets.

Here are some examples of funkis from Helsinki:

http://www.domnik.net/helsinki/kuvat/kaisaniemi/2003-05/metsatalo1.jpg
http://www.brainalmeltdown.net/cybbis/framed/capitals/slides/helsinki6.jpg

Estonia:
http://www.weekend.ee/client/rannahotell/rannahotel1.jpg
http://www.einst.ee/Ea/2/SPILDID/kalm/SUM6.JPG

And from Sweden:

Threads from Kaunas, Lithuania are full of examples of some Baltic functionalism. Same as everywhere else.

Very nice pics- thank you. The place reminds me ˇvėrynas district in Vilnius (Kęstučio str.) . It is a mixture of interwar, stalinistic and modern architecture. Very nice place to live I guess.

i must admit that i don't like these wooden/concrete buildings either....

but Estonia has so many fine examples of this 'boring' style of architecture called functionalism. without a doubt, this is one of my favorite styles! :)

i wish i had a camera, i'd make a cool thread of it.... :(

Wow... super, the district looks nice although i have always thought of it as a bit "left behind" Ofcourse that is now changing as it has the biggest building activity by far in Tallinn atm! Good pics, i love em, im not skilled enough to make pics of ordinary places, but when summer hits i will :)!

Untallinnish? imo most buildings is Tallinn look like that !
