3. Largest distribution center for Asian commerce to Latin America
4. Largest Container Ports in Latin America
5. The crossroads of all fiber optic telecommunications between the Americas
6. One of the largest Maritime Insurance Centers in the World

8. The Panama Canal is the Crossroads of all major maritime routes

due to political strife in their own.
11. Largest Registry of commercial vessels in the World
12. Restricted room for sprawl in the City due to fronting water and the
protected rainforests that surround Panama City's outskirts leading to
vertical development
13. Tourist's and retirees around the World are beginning to "discover"
Panama as a natural paradise promting tons of investment from
foreigners.

I actually beg to differ on many of these points.
I'll try and go one by one ;)
1) Yes, Panama used to have one of the greatest banking centers worldwide, however, during the dictatorship in the late 1980's most of the banks pretty much packed and left. However, what is left, and what hopefully is becoming is a pretty solid foundation for Panama to be once again another great banking center. However, what stops Panama from doing so at the moment, is mainly the bureaucracy of a "banana republic"
2) The largest free zone, is in located on the opposite side of Panama, in the city of Colon. While the actual free zone does attract many people, Colon certainly does not. A ghetto with high crime rate and overall extreme poverty, it is hard to be able to develop the area around it. One must also remember that in a duty free zone, the markups are increased, and the actual value of the item ultimately is not worth the trip.
3) agree
4) agree
5) agree, but then again, so what looking back at these last three one must realize that Panama doesn't have the "huge" companies and corporations that are compared to the rest of the world. The largest Panamanian company is most likely the Panama Canal, and that itself is government owned.
6) Agree, however the "banana republic" bureaucracy comes into effect again. Panama feels that it dominates this market so well, that an increase in prices and a decrease in overall service will ultimately help the country. Hopefully things stay the same.
7) and then there is the Canal... it should all be tied together, and defenitly not something that could sustain a country economically.
8) agree
9) cannot really comment on this as however there are many many pros to having a dollarized economy, the fixed rate does not allow market forces to interact with the value of the "balboa". One can't expect the Panamanian economy to mimic that of the U.S's. Because according to what you have said, this major boom in Panama should actually value its currency, however the value of the U.S dollar has devalued recently, thus the economy relies on an artificially devalued currency (which has always been overvalued but i wont get into that)
10) Agree, they are many wealthy families in Panama, however, there is an issue with Panama bordering Colombia, but for now its alright
11) Same as 6
12) Agree, except for the fact that Panama City's traffic is absolutely dreadful, it mirrors that of U.S cities with constant congestion like that of Los Angeles. Skyscrapers are nice, but at one point, (a point which Panama City is quite close too) the streets will not support the population
13) Sure
In my opinion, a lot, I'm defenitly not saying all, but a lot of the investment put into Panama's new malls, skyscrapers and casinos are funded by money launderers. If you look over the years, Panama's economy defenitly is not seen in a "booming" inflationary period, however, its construction certainly suggests that. Having Columbia next to them, and have a lax banking system, its a haven for drug lords with millions of dollars in cash to spend. All this investment may seem as a defenite plus for the economy, however it is not. By creating a virtually limitless amount of money into a business, it allows that business to ignore business profits and allow the sale of items under cost, however good these may be to the panamanian people, it puts the middle and upper class businessmen out of business, they simply cant compete.
Anyway, I apologize for the length of this, and hopefully I won't get bashed to death, i mean no disrespect.
Cheers
