This new thread is initiated by Christians post about Norwegian shopping malls. The aim here is to show and discuss good projects and developments which deal with urbanity, human scale, mixed use. With a „new” i mean not only projects of last 5 years but projects since 1950-60 till today.
How new centres (shopping and whateever) could be made more urban - with mixed use, human scale etc. So it should be not purely shopping or business or housing areas. It could be new buildings in old city. I hope to see here also good projects showing how those new, modern large things (shopping, multiplexes etc.) could be puted in old centres. It's about inteligent ways how to deal with historical context. It’s about outdoor space not indoor.
Although i think we could show here any redevelopment, revitalization projects which givs new city life, vitality and urbanity to former industrial or waterfront areas.
So – my restrictions
• pedestrian oriented not car-based – human scale
• mixed use
• since fifties sixties till our days
They could be not always brilliant examples – also controversial. It seems to me that it’s not that much about skyscrapers. But the thread is open – so if you have another thaughts – welcome.
The first one – Ski storessenter posted by Christian.
Ski storsenter is a new shopping center in downtown Ski. The center contains 127 stores with cinema centers, library, hotels and residentials on the roof. The center was reconstructed in 2003, and the numbers of stores increased to 127. Ski Storsenter is also a nominee to the shopping mall of the year in Europe.
I think it’s very succesfull solution for city centre – to combine shopping with housing. Human scale, nice environment – shop windows not blind walls. It’s good alternative to suburban malls and big boxes. Although i do not know – is this sheme working well – are those flats occupated?

the next one - very controversial project in Riga Old City. I'm sure that Gatis already showed it.
There are some things i like and some that i could not accept. In the aerial render the closest part of the complex is the new one. Distal part (triangular in plan) is department store build in thirties. The green line between them is Ridzenes street now called after the small reiver which was filled up some 300 years ago here.
I think the facades and scale of new building are really contextual and well done. The worst thing is that those two parts in the project are conected together. Developers want to cover the street with glass roof and close with the doors on both ends.
So the city street - public space should become privatized indoor space now.
It will damage the city fabric and make superblock in the old city where smaller blocks are typical. I couldn't accept it.
Although many architects, heritage protectors and society are against it the project is started now and i do not know how it will end up.

This is a great idea for a thread, may it be long and prosper.
The best example of new urbanism on a human scale I can think of in Norway, is Aker Brygge, here in Oslo, wich was built from the mid 80'ies to mid 90'ies. I blame myself for not having presented it before, because some consider it the best example of revitalization of old dockyards in Northern Europe. Well, I'll leave it up to others to discuss that, but the area is an absolute success, with its mixed use, shopping mall, offices, 7000 restaurant seats and apartments. This area became very expencive to live in to begin with, because of its popularity. And it is THE buzzling, happening place in summer(although abit overcrowded with tourists and people in suits). Some of the buildings are built in to the old dockyards, sort of.
Facts:
* 86,000 sqm. Office accommodations
* 24,000 sqm. Shops and restaurants with approx. 5,000 employees
* 382 apartments from 40 to 500 sqm.
* 1 Cinema
* 1,600 indoor parking places
* 1 kindergarten
* Harbour for 125 small crafts
* Terminal for the Nesodden boats

I will find other projects later. Christian should say some words about Solsiden in Trondheim, another good example of waterfront developement.

thank you, NorthStar, that’s exactly what i mean. While writing my first post here i thaught also about Ruoholahti in Helsinki, Norra Hamn in Helsingborg, Bo01 in Malmo and of course Aker Brygge which is the best example of such development in nordic countries. I was writing my master thesis about such projects. Although i never been in Oslo.
The next example is smaller. It’s from the town where i was studying for one semester. It is Town Hall in Lund, Sweden, made by Klas Anshelm (1914-1980) in 1968 at Stortorget (Big square, Big market).
On the fourground of new building is old town hall (rectangular in plan). There are two auditoriums used for diferent kinds of public meetings and the shops at the ground level open to the street. New building is planned in modern way but its fit to fabric of oldtown Lund very well. It closes up the free space of square making new facade. Its free standing but in the same time it making like one complex with the old building. It uses the same kind of brick as the old one. Behind the building is small street made which is left open (not covered) making it truly urban.
Architect’s subtle and gentle attitude, materials, scale makes it a brilliant example of modern, contextual, urban architecture.

I will find other projects later. Christian should say some words about Solsiden in Trondheim, another good example of waterfront developement.
Not only Solsiden, but whole Nedre Elvehavn. When completed this area will contain 120.000 sqm office, cultural and retail area. 85 000 sqm residential, dividet into 950 apartments/ 2200 inhabitants. 12 000 sqm hotel and conference center. 1 600 parking lots and 5 900 sqm parks. This project is also Norways most enviromental energy-solution for heating of office buildings and apartments. The whole project consist of 14 construction projects.
I know i written some threads about this ages ago, but they seems to be gone years ago. So ill see what i can find and show here.
Btw, good thread Artis. :okay:

The first example that comes to my mind from here is Kamppi Center which is still under construction. Built in the downtown core, it will contain a shopping center, apartments, offices, underground central bus station and a metro station. It will also connect the area to the underground shopping tunnels near the railway station.
It can easily be called the most easibly reached place in the entire country, and best of all, it will be completely car free.
Too much open area here, IMHO. Way too much space. It looks so desolate with no people.
