In the very heart of Glasgow stands one of the city’s most important and prestigious buildings – the City Chambers.

A grand and imposing edifice overlooking George Square, the City Chambers is an impressive symbol of Glasgow’s political strength and historical wealth. Completed in 1888, the City Chambers has for over a hundred years been the headquarters of successive councils serving the City of Glasgow.

Located on the eastern side of Glasgow's George Square, the City Chambers were built by a London Scot, William Young, and were intended to convey the wealth and importance of Glasgow at the end of the 19th Century.

Built in the Italian Renaissance style and opened in 1888 by Queen Victoria, the impressive west facade dominates George Square. Built around a courtyard, the corners of the building are capped by domes and an impressive axial tower rises behind the facade. The interior reflects the opulence of Victorian Glasgow with staircases and galleries composed of marble, mosaics and tiles. Today, the Chambers remain the principal offices of the Glasgow City Council.

I think this building is beautiful both on the inside and out. Biased or not, it deserves a 9.

I like the facade's ornaments a lot!

As grand as this building is, for the Second City of the Empire, it probably should have been grander. Still, I really like it, so I give it a 9.

Some better pictures might do it more justice, though.
