Interesting. I didn't know that brazilian colonial architecture was so close to portuguese medieval one. Except for the big wall around the town it looks like Ouro Preto, São João del Rey, Mariana, Sabará...

I was in Obidos a few years ago and it is truly a wonderful town with a great atmosphere. As you point out, it's preserved incredibly well. Let's have more picture threads about Portugal's small towns (Sintra, Marvao, etc.)!

Yes, many older parts of cities in Brasil resemble portuguese towns.

Caro senhor arpels estas casas não são medievais, mas sim do século XVII no mínimo. Mas se ter referes às muralhas, sim: charme medieval! ;)

Founded by the Celts in 308 B.C., Óbidos was subsequently occupied by the Romans, Visigoths and Moor before being taken by the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques in 1148. In 1282 King Dinis and his Queen, Isabel, were married in Óbidos. The town was given as a wedding present to the Queen and from then until 1834 was part of the dowry of all Portuguese queens. Today the superbly preserved medieval walls and towering castle, formerly the royal palace, and the white-washed houses highlighted with blue and yellow stripes lining narrow, twisting cobblestone streets, allow the visitor to step out of the frenetic twenty-first century and go back in time.

Great pictures...Portugal is one of the prettiest countries of the World…the preserved medieval town of Óbidos lying 100 km north of Lisbon is without doubt one of Portugal's most classic walled settlements. Walking the ramparts, visitors can enjoy views of windmills, vineyards and surrounding farmlands. In the residential area below, narrow cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed houses sporting terracotta roofs. The shops are piled high with local handicrafts, while in spring the town is ablaze with geraniums, morning glories and bougainvillaea. ;)

What a charming and picturesque town! :) I've always believed that Portugal is unfairly underrated worldwide. I've been many times to Portugal and I love it, I can't believe I haven't head of Óbidos before! I definitely must include it in my next visit to Portugal!
