you've gotta love the laid back life in sarajevo. it may not be the place were you would want to go get in trouble, run from the cops and hide (:D) but a place were you can relax in a cafe, catch up with your surroundings, and really enjoy life.

I can never see enough pics of this wonderful city... Gotta go there someday soon!

BTW, after the 1990s war, I've heard many Bosnians complain that Sarajevo lost much of its character because so many people, including a large number of intellectuals, left the city before and during the conflict. To what extent was that true and has the situation improved since then?

It is true. A lot of people left and yes, most of the intellectuals(gotta love that word ;) ). I think the estimates were around 200.000. However, since the war ended like 9 years ago a lot of people have returned or are partly residential in Sarajevo like some members here perhaps. Thesame goes for the intellectuals. Anyway, the new generations hold the future so....

IMO, the years right after the war were really bad and depressing. But now the city is really back on it's feet and has thesame ideals, values and goals that it had before.

It's not as diverse as it was before, and a lot of poor/rural refugees from eastern Bosnia came after being ethnically cleansed, so people say that it's become primitive, too-Bosniak, etc. In my opinion most of that is exaggarated. It's not the same as it was, but I'm willing to be that will come back in a generation and a half, like it did after WWII.

A big chunck of those refugees have left Sarajevo the last couple of years. Mostly due the fact that others wanted their house/flat back and they were forced to leave. Some left by theirself since they clearly didn't belong there.

I've really noticed the change in the population(regarding the refugees) by just looking around on the streets.

the first five years after the war, i'd have to admitt, things were getting pretty dam depressing. :( now however, people are comming back, the economy has been growing quickly, and things are always awaiting the new generations. don't get me wrong, it's sad that the old generations have had to loose their "charectoristic" that made sarajevo, sarajevo. new people are comming, they are happier, sarajevo will be back to what it was concerning the "spirt" i estimate in less than 5 years. hopefully that is.

Mila, you are a great person ;)

'Sve je kao i prije, a opet drugačije. Ne sanjam te više rado, al' te sanjam opet često...jer je u mom prozoru šuškala do u zoru jedna grana zelena, i na grani maslina...boja maslinasto zelena, to me podsjeća onda kad sam bio vojnik kako si me voljela - by Čola - song that I remember every time I go to my city

In that picture you posted (Vijećnica and surroundings), there's one market (iliti pijaca) my father use to go to buy some things an Sunday. It was 1h away from Ilidža, he he would allways sit on tram, buy Oslobođenje, take a walk at Miljacka, buy something at pijaca and meet his friends. It was his favourite place :(

By the way, I agree with your grandmother (:D), my family was against Sandžaklije too, they don't belong here. They're a bit 'wild' as my grandfather liked to say.

She say the same of your people too - hehehe. She is from nearby to Prijedor so her experiences lately were not so much fun. You know what she to me when I told her of my engagement - hahaha - "Mila, my darling Mila...it is perfectly good and fine to be friends with Serbs, and the Croats, and the Jews, and whatever else crawls out of the woods...but you don't have to marry one!"

Your Father sounds like a commie - did he walk with his hands held behind his back too? Very slowly and looking side to side, up and down, while he walked - mine did.

No...my family wasn't against Sandžakli neither, but our policy was 'this is place for us, that's place for them'. And I agree with him (grandfather).

It may not be someone from Sarajevo.

When the Sinagogue was spraypainted "Jasenovac Waits!" it turned out to be a Croatian guy from Rovinj.

When the Serb church was spraypainted "Your God is dead!" after the genocide convictions at the Hague, it turned out to be a Bosnian Serb guy from Mrkonjic Grad.

And, given it's Tanjug...most likely scenario is that it never even happened. :D

But keep it up - because of them, it was safe to ride the yellow trams. ;)

For those who don't know, a developing budget for 2005 in canton Sarajevo (the city, and some suburb areas) is 580 milion KM (convertible mark) without privatisation transactions that haven't been completed yet. I think we can expect some major projects in this year if everything goes as planed.

I can't say if the Sarajevo's budget is bigger then Bosnia and Herzegovina's state level budget, since i don't know how much the second one amounts. What i wrote is based on an interview with the Canton Sarajevo prime minister on a tv Sarajevo. I doubt he would lie :)

One of the reasons for such a big and unexpected budget is a huge number of successfully completed privatisation proccesses in the last couple of years (for example Holiday Inn has been sold for 44 milion a year or two ago), casinos who pay enormous taxes, banking -which is btw the most developed economy branch in BiH, tourism - making progress like hell, and so on...when you see it that way it doesn't sound so unrealistic.

Wasn't the stadium in Eastern Sarajevo finished before the start of this premier league season? I've heard stories about that stadium fullfilling the uefa standards and that international games can be played? Is that true or what?

They should be using what little money they have to build infrastructure (power plants, water treatment plants, hospitals, etc) instead of wasting it on useless things like sports stadiums. That's why you're all so poor over there, you have mixed up priorities.

BosRoker

Eastern Sarajevo is a bit of a myth. It's not really one city, but like 6 different municipalities. I think the closest they come is the few suburbs in Novo Sarajevo of RS, Novi Grad of RS, and Ilidza of RS (?) that are sort of close together. But I still doubt they'll join them together to form an actual city anytime soon.

They should be using what little money they have to build infrastructure (power plants, water treatment plants, hospitals, etc) instead of wasting it on useless things like sports stadiums. That's why you're all so poor over there, you have mixed up priorities.

Yeah, they're building soccer stadiums and new communities from scractch in a few small towns when they're the poorest region in Bosnia and Herzegovina and have an out of control unemployment rate. I don't think they even have a real soccer team so it's pretty useless. But I mean, if you can't find a place in the real Sarajevo you can always go there and have a nice view of the real city over the hills.

Don't be silly. Western Europe and USA don't want to see us developed, they need some area where they can test their mechanisms of ecnomic agression and where they can send milions of organizations to "help". All they do is supress.

We were once developed (former Yugoslavia), fifth in the whole world actually.... but obviuosly someone didn't want to see south Slavs having a strong and powerfull homeland. Germans in the first place and so on...

Italia my friend,

The stadium isn't finished still, somehing is, but that's just part of it...when more money comes, they'll continue.

Bilo kako bilo, evo nešto o Slaviji:

Slavija1908-2004

Iste godine dolazi i do raskola u klubu. Manji dio clanstva napusta Djacki sportski klub i formira Hrvatski sportski klub, kasnije SASK.
