hkskyline February 13th, 2006, 06:24 AM Two runners critically ill after Hong Kong marathon
HONG KONG (Reuters) - Twenty-two people were taken to hospital and two of them were in critical condition after taking part in Hong Kong's biggest marathon amid the worst air pollution levels in months, the government said on Monday.
A record 40,000 people took part in Sunday's Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon and many complained of the thick smog which obscured the Tsing Ma Bridge, a key landmark along the route of the annual race.
Of the two runners in critical condition, one collapsed near the finish in Wanchai district, an area where the air pollution index (API) soared to nearly 150, the highest level since September 2005. The other collapsed not far from the Tsing Ma Bridge.
"They are still in critical condition," a government spokeswoman said.
The organizer, the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, was not immediately available for comment and it was not clear if the two men collapsed because of polluted air.
However, Choi Kin, president of the Hong Kong Medical Association said their condition was more likely to be linked to their level of fitness rather than air quality.
"When people suddenly perform exercise that aims to test their limits, their bodies may not be able to cope," the South China Morning Post reported Choi as saying.
Hong Kong uses the API to gauge its air quality, which has worsened in recent years. Many days of the year, the tiny city in southern China is shrouded in smog and people can hardly see across the famous Victoria Harbor.
Environmentalists blame the air pollution on emissions from vehicles in the territory and factories in southern China.
hkskyline February 14th, 2006, 05:51 PM Runner dies after Hong Kong Marathon
HONG KONG, Feb 14, 2006 (AFP) - A runner who collapsed during the Hong Kong marathon died in hospital Tuesday while another competitor remained in critical condition, a health official said.
Tsang Kam-yin, 53, reportedly had asthma and was among the 22 runners who received hospital treatment. He died early Tuesday morning, and no more details about him were disclosed.
William Ko, chairman of event organiser the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, had dismissed concerns there were insufficient doctors and first aid staff to help a record 4,800 injured runners in Sunday's race.
He also defended the decision to stage the race amid the worst air pollution in Hong Kong since September.
The air pollution index reached a "very high" 149 in some areas, a level at which local authorities usually issue health warnings for people with heart or respiratory illnesses.
Ko said an index of 100 before the race was suitable for running although environmentalists criticised the government's use of outmoded and low air pollution standards.
The other hospitalised runner, a 33-year-old surnamed Chu who also collapsed during the race with 40,000 competitors, had regained consciousness by Monday but remained in critical condition.
superchan7 February 14th, 2006, 07:48 PM The government's air quality standards are useless. They need some third-party air monitoring.

hkskyline February 4th, 2012, 06:40 PM Marathon helpers are winners all the way
The Standard
Friday, February 03, 2012
Fitness instructor Harry Fung Ching-cheong may be in perfect shape but he will not be running the marathon.
Instead, the former champion pole vaulter and biking enthusiast will be helping to ensure that the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on Sunday goes off smoothly
Fung will lead a team of volunteers, comprising former athletes and sports workers, in providing logistical support.
A record 70,000 runners will be taking part in the event, compared to 65,000 last year.
Close to 5,000 volunteers will be helping out, from distributing entry packs to being race marshals.
Fung will oversee a fleet of 25 Citybus vehicles that have been chartered for the day.
As compensation, he will receive an allowance of HK$300 - and he is quite happy.
"This is the best way I can help as volunteering is a great way to give back to the sports community and ensure participants have a successful run," said Fung, who has been helping out since the first event in 1997.
Elsewhere, Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation executive secretary Stephen Lee Kai-mou is a key transport coordinator for the event, and Raymond Lau Han-man, a former sprinter, a busy physiotherapist at the finish line.
hkskyline February 6th, 2012, 02:23 PM Tragic end
The Standard
Monday, February 06, 2012
http://the-sun.on.cc/cnt/news/20120206/photo/0206-00405-001b5.jpg
Runners have been urged to know their limits after the Standard Chartered Marathon claimed its second life in its 16-year history.
The tragedy has prompted organizers to reconsider whether to require distance runners to provide medical records.
A total of 38 runners were taken to hospital - with two in critical condition in hospital and 35 discharged later.
Lau Chek-lun, who competed in the half-marathon, collapsed about 40 meters after crossing the finish line in Victoria Park. He was pronounced dead at Ruttonjee Hospital at 8.58am.
In 2006, a 53-year-old man died three days after he ran 13 kilometers and collapsed.
Lau also completed the race last year and took part in the 10km challenge race in 2010. He was single and worked as a clerk in an architectural firm.
"Once runners saw him collapse, they tried to perform artificial resuscitation," said William Ko Wai-lam, chairman of the organizing committee, adding the safety of runners is a top priority.
"Three doctors were on duty at the finish line, along with 600 paramedics, nurses and 10 ambulances. We were prepared for any urgent medical condition."
The number of runners taken to hospital was four times more than last year's nine people who were hospitalized after the race.
A 24-year-old woman, Cheung Wai-yi, and a 26-year-old man were in critical condition in Ruttonjee Hospital last night.
Cheung's parents said she was healthy and trained well before the race.
Ko said the organizing team will thoroughly evaluate the race.
But when asked if it is necessary for runners to submit their medical records before taking part, Ko said it is is not a practical suggestion but they would give it thought for next year's event.
Lobo Louie Hung-tak, associate professor in physical education at Baptist University, said: "Out of 100,000 marathon runners, 0.8 would suffer sudden death."
He said the man who died yesterday most likely had hidden health problems. "Although these are unpredictable and congenital medical conditions, runners should be wary of their symptoms, such as dizziness or finding it hard to catch their breath, and seek help straight away," he said.
"Running in the half-marathon requires much more physical strength than the 10 kilometers."
Psychiatrist Ng Kong-man said: "While exercising, the brain releases endorphins and adrenaline, making runners feel hyperactive and less aware of their medical condition than is normal."
The Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association said this year 658 runners suffered from cramps, 276 had wounds dressed and 17 needed ice packs.
This year's event attracted a record number of runners - 70,000 - compared with 65,000 last year. A total of 59,175 runners completed the race.
Kwan Kee, chairman of Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, said the weather this year was perfect, and the more-than-satisfactory conditions resulted in seven males and four females breaking records.
