Is it possible to drive from Arhus, Denmark to Helsinki, Finland? Through Copenhagen-Malmo-Stockholm.
There is a bridge proposed for Germany and the island of Copenhagen through Fehmarn Island, but not sure if there is one proposed for Turko, Finland and Stockhom via Aland Island. :)

Wow! Somehow nobody imagined to build a bridge over Bothnian Gulf. Last time to do it ;)

Btw. thread about bridges in Baltic Sea could be pretty spectacular! There are several great bridges - do not forget the old but still pretty modern looking bridge to Oland island from Kalmar in Sweden.

that would be one INSANE bridge.

Of course you CAN drive from Stockholm to Helsinki, but it would mean very long drive though the north of course!!

p.s. what's this baltic infrastructure doing in this thread anyway? i'm soooo lost

He meant Baltic sea, I think. Who knows, one day we might end up having Scandinavia renamed to Baltics ;)

There's a nice thread about Danish bridges right HERE (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=123873). Renderings of the new Fehmern bridge is also included:)

You can, of course, drive your car into a ferry going from Stockholm to Turku or Helsinki. ;)

there is also a possibility to go from malmo to stockholm and then use a ship to get from stockholm to turku and then to helsinki......that would shorten the trip dramatically

...But we don't have any islands! That means no HUGE bridge projects!
Last island was Roņu sala (Ruhnu, Estonia) that we make a gift to Estonian brothers =)
In fact, we, Latvians are very generous nation!
All Lithuanian sea-line-territhory (incloding Klaipeda and Palanga) we gave to Lithuanian brothers (some 300 years ago - don't remember exactly)
But Abrene area, near Russian border, was divested by our Russian brothers.

I know, that our Finland brothers have the same problem with Russian brothers

@Laurijs: Palanga was always part of Lithuania and Klaipeda was part of either Prussia, Germany or Lithuania, never Latvia. In fact, 300 years ago Latvia didnt even exist.

@Laurijs Yep and once Lithuanian-Polish commonwealth was incorporated to Latvia :D Btw, what was occation for a gift you made to Estonia? ;)

There was a short period in 1918 when Palanga was under Latvian control. There was fighting between Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians on one side and Russians on the other. After bolshevics were kicked from our countries it appeared that Latvian troops control Palanga and Lithuanian ones control some lands around Bauska (?). So it was decided to make a peaceful exchange. Nevertheless Palanga never officialy belonged to Latvia.

Yes it is. You drive to Stockholm and then you take the ferry over to Helsinki. You park the car inside the ferry. I have driven many times from Helsinki to Copenhagen.

There are plans on building a bridge from Finland to mainland Sweden but it will take some time. There are plans of adding some of the islands in the Finnish archipelago to the mainland like Åland.

As long as Lithuania has no islands, the only non-international ferry line we have is between Klaipeda and the Curonian spit. There was a plan to bild a bridge over the Curonian lagoon, bet fortunately they didn't get realized.

@ch1le - deal?
We would like to get Ruhnu and Kihnu ;) (I even do not hope for the big islands). In exchange we would offer... hm, what could we offer?

ch1le
March 2nd, 2005, 10:11 PM
hehe, there are many estonian jokes about us giving Latvians a big island f.e hiiumaa or saaremaa and you giving us Riga

Edd

And we have curonian spit which is much better than all those islands but we'll not give it to you. :tongue4:

Edit: On the other hand a few additional islands would make no harm to us. So what about this deal: we'll give you the most powerful atomic electric power station in the World and you'll give us all your islands? ;)

Edit: i see Edd offered more, anyway you can live without electricity, but you can't live without beer :)

Because it is located in Lithuania. :tongue4:

Although curonian spit has some advantages. :) It was formed by winds, there were somewhere interesting animation which showed how surface of it was formed. Its history is also very interesting. It is also listed in unesco.

Is it different from Russian border? We have both in Latvia - not a big difference. Nothing that terrible, only endless rows of poor trucks on Russian border due to the bureaucracy on both sides of the border.

How about illegal import of cigarettes and vodka? :)
